2 out of 5 stars Mediocre, at best.......2006-02-27

So what if UCLA uses this as their primary freshman text? UCSD (where I go), MIT, and other schools use it too, and every student I've met agrees that this book is sub-par. It isn't as clear as it can be, is bereft of example problems that apply to the homework, has at least a few mistakes per chapter in the solutions manual, spends way too much time deriving some (useless) things more applicable to physical chemisty, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-10-06

I got the order sooner than i expected and it was in exactly the condition they said it was in. I am very pleased with my order.

3 out of 5 stars Confusion.......2004-12-21

Book layout is overly confusing. Text is sometimes not as clear as can be and needs more practice examples (most apparent in sections like isomers and titrations). Yes like one person said before, UCLA does use this text to teach Life science majors, but there are better choices. There are numerous mistakes in the solution guides still, and Zumdahl's "Chemical Principles" is a much better read in my opinion. I actually used it to clear up points this text was muddy on. Your mileage may vary.

4 out of 5 stars Generally good.......2004-03-02

This is one of the more advanced general chem textbooks available. It has a review section at the beginning of the book for those who are not quite ready for college level chemistry. Unlike its two main competitors(Principles of Modern Chemistry by Oxtoby and Chemical Principles by Zumdahl), it introduces quantum chemistry (at very basic level) first. If you have hard time with this book, you might have to go down a level and find a text for regular science major general chemistry, for example, Brown/LeMay/Bursten or Moore/Stanitski/Jurs.

4 out of 5 stars THE COLLOGE 1ST SEMESTER HONORS CHEM BOOK.......2004-01-05

I used this book for my 1st semester Honors Chemistry class at Cornell University (CHEM 215). Even though Chem is not my favorite science subject (I'm an electrical engineer, so I prefer physics instead) I have to say the combination of book and professor (Benjamin Widom), makes me remember that class as my favorite one during my first semester at Cornell. I wouldn't listen too much to the negative reviewer (Who wrote this book?). The book is not bad at all; it is just focused towards students who are going to be majoring on Chemistry (Pre-Meds). But that doesn't make it "bad". I do recognize that there are some typos in this edition that our professor easily corrected (that's why I gave it a 4 and not a 5).

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!.......2006-11-04

This book is really helpful. It covers a wide range of forensics pathology topics and provides rich and detailed information on these topics. It can be used as a "forensics pathology for dummies" book as well as a reference book for confirmed pathologists.
And last but not least, it is full of very good color pictures (forget the usual black and white pics which provide poor information, color pictures are so realistic and so much better!), and generally speaking its look and feels are very pleasant.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book.......2005-05-30

It is just unbelieveable. The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. The authours have stressed in almost all chapters of the limitations of the findings. This is admirable.Training as a forensic physician and a lawyer, this book is of great help.

4 out of 5 stars clear narrative of concepts.......2006-12-25

Leach explains how to do serious molecular modelling. Naturally, this has to be done by computer simulations. The text is a blend of the physical principles and equations needed, and how to implement as code. For example, there is the Lennard-Jones potential for intermolecular attraction. But modelling using this often also involves a cutoff. The problem with the latter is that it can create discontinuities in both the potential and the force [which is the derivate of the former]. You can shown how to suitably modify matters to avoid these complications.

Another familiar potential is the Morse potential, used to model bond stretching. Empirical but very useful, and in general quite adequate for most simulations.

The text even has an example of modelling a high temperature superconductor. Partly to enhance the relevance of the narrative for practical applications.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and self-contained.......2005-07-01

In this book, Andrew Leach has done a great job in putting in almost every important concept, sundry as well as significant, from the field of computational chemistry and molecular modeling. From basic but very useful concepts like atom types, Z matrices, and force field parametrization, to advanced topics like Ewald Sums and Low Mode Monte Carlo conformational searching, Leach gives due importance to everything. The discussions on quantum mechanics in the first few chapters are moderate on the mathematics without shying away from it, and provide just the right amount of detail. Later chapters cover the whole gamut of computational techniques, from Molecular Dynamics and Molecular Mechanics, to Moelcular Similarity and QSAR. Examples that are relevant in chemistry and biology are scattered throughout the book and illustrate every key idea. There are many good books for Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modeling, and some are good for a few topics, others for other ones. However, if one wants to get a grip on ALL important topics in the area, I think this is the most comprehensive reference that one can look up.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2004-06-04

Good:
This book gives an excellent overview of molecular simulation techniques starting with quantum mechanics ab initio type calculations and going up through molecular dynamics and polymer simulation. It gives a good step up from your standard physical chemistry text (such as Atkins or Chang) to being able to read the literature on modern molecular modelling techniques.

Bad:
The treatment of many methods is somewhat superficial.
The book was first written in 1996 and updated in 2000 - it is starting to get a bit out of date.

Overall I would recommend this as a solid introduction and reference.

5 out of 5 stars The bible.......2003-02-12

If you could choose only one book about molecular modelling - this should be it. Everything is covered, more or less thourough, from ab initio to molecular docking, algorithms, force fields, molecular dynamics, etc. It is well written, but also works well if you want to look up single key words. The book can be read by novices to molecular modelling as well as it is useful for experts. I can highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Review by a molecular tyro.......2002-11-20

I'd like to recommend this book from the perspective of someone who is new to the field. I have only an informal background in chemistry and biology and an undergraduate physics degree that's 20 years old. Mr. Leach works through a broad range of material, from numeric solutions to the quantum equations for a molecule to algorithms for searching through the conformational space. His descriptions have to be concise in order to fit the enormous volume of material he has to cover, yet I found that I had no trouble following along. He often takes a historical approach. I found this effective. I would find myself wandering down blind alleys when examining the early solutions, then read the later art and have a greater appreciation for the problem than if the ultimate answer were presented first. I have been able to use much of the book as a practical guide in my work.

Frankly, I'm amazed that someone with a professional life can find the time to put together a book of this scope.

    Book Description

The peroral application (swallowing) of a medicine means that the body must first resorb the active substance before it can begin to take effect. The efficacy of drug uptake depends on the one hand on the chemical characteristics of the active substance, above all on its solubility and membrane permeability. On the other hand, it is determined by the organism's ability to absorb pharmaceuticals by way of specific transport proteins or to excrete them. Since many pharmacologically active substances are poorly suited for oral intake, a decisive criterion for the efficacy of a medicine is its so-called bioavailability.

Written by an international team from academia and the pharmaceutical industry, this book covers all aspects of the oral bioavailability of medicines. The focus is placed on methods for determining the parameters relevant to bioavailability. These range from modern physicochemical techniques via biological studies in vitro and in vivo right up to computer-aided predictions. The authors specifically address possibilities for optimizing bioavailability during the early screening stage for the active substance.
Its clear structure and comprehensive coverage make this book equally suitable for researchers and lecturers in industry and teaching.

5 out of 5 stars The Luminescence Bible.......2007-03-09

What's more to say? This is the authoritative, the definitive volume for luminescence experiments from theory to all of the most useful applications. It is readable, dense, useful and indispensable if you do fluorescence, lifetime measurements, energy transfer studies, etc., etc.

5 out of 5 stars A most worthy successor to the first edition.......1999-09-14

In the sixteen years since the appearance of the first edition of Lakowicz's Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, the use of fluorescence as an analytical tool has grown remarkably, especially in instrumentation, available fluorophores, and practical applications. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that the second edition of the work has more than doubled in size.

The approach is the same as that in the first edition: fluorescence spectroscopy from the viewpoint of a biophysical chemist. Explanations are clear. References are profuse; they now number well over a thousand and include an additional appendix that cites many books and review articles for additional reading. Figures are also plentiful; no fancy color diagrams a la contemporary biochemistry texts, but basic line drawings, primarily adapted from journal articles.

The first three chapters ("Introduction to Fluorescence", "Instrumentation for Fluorescence Spectroscopy", and "Fluorophores") are an excellent brief (93-page) introduction to the whole field. Most of the remaining 19 chapters are organized around the kinds of photophysical processes and spectroscopic quantities that are relevant to fluorescence. These include very thorough treatments of fluorescence lifetimes, quenching, anisotropy, and energy transfer. There are many examples drawn from journal articles. In addition, the work now covers more of the technological applications of fluorescence, especially in chapters on "Fluorescence Sensing" and "DNA Technology". These give a sense of the great contributions that fluorescence has made to biotechnology.

My own work involves varied applications of fluorescence to biotechnology, and the second edition of Lakowicz is my reference book of choice. It would also be an excellent text for a graduate course on fluorescence in a chemistry or biochemistry department. All in all, this is a most worth successor to the first edition.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, new edition out soon.......1999-06-10

Joe Lakowicz has just finished a thorough revision of this classic work, which should be coming out soon. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for an overview on fluorometry.......1999-05-12

Introduces the reader to the basic physics and physical chemistry of fluorescence phenomena, fluorometry techniques and covers advanced topics as well. An excellent textbook.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but not complete.......2004-11-18

This book was used in a class I nearly took in college; while I couldn't fit the course into my schedule, I kept the book.

What the book does, it does well: for example, its coverage of the noble gases is quite extensive. It also does an excellent job covering acid/base chemistry, going into far more detail than any book I had seen to that point (although its approach tended to be descriptive and qualitative rather than quantitative).

That said, there are some significant gaps in the book: for example, while there is a chapter on the halogens and noble gases, there are no corresponding chapters for the other element groups (though that doesn't mean they aren't treated).

The biggest flaw in this book, though, is the woefully inadequate index: there are many, many things that should be listed, but aren't. For example, the book uses a certain type of diagram in three different chapters. Only the second and third instances, though, are listed in the index; the first time, where the diagrams are actually explained, is not listed at all. Similarly, there are very few entries for the elements themselves: there are no entries *at all* for hydrogen, iodine, copper, or calcium, just to name four.

All in all, it's still a very good book, but it's by no means perfect (or the only book of its kind). Large sections of the book are written at a relatively advanced level, so I certainly wouldn't recommend this for someone who hasn't had a significant chemistry background, but I would recommend it for someone trying to build a reference library.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best introductory inorganic textbooks around.......2002-01-27

I bought this book on the recommendation of one of my chemistry advisors. I must say, it is one of the best books available on the market for inorganic chemistry. The chapters on bonding, solid state, and coordination are very well done, but the authors have done a good job on the rest as well. They don't try to gloss over anything and provide references for further reading. I used this book as background for an inorganic synthesis project; I am using it for a one-semester inorganic class now (the book was designed for a two-semester class), and I will use it again when I take a higher class in inorganic chemistry.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2001-12-17

Although I didn't read much about it, I still got an A from this course. Hopefully the professor won't see this page.:-)
If you ever need to know anything about inorganic chemistry of today, buy this book. It's almost a dictionary for inorg-chemists.

This book is a fantastic approach for Inorganic Chemistry! Far from the usual descriptive inorganic chemistry found in other books, Huheey's work is a complete and thorough guide to undergraduate students; it explains important subjects which are left out in other works.

The chapters about bonding are specially well written and have good information that can be well understood by chemistry students.

There is only one little flaw, its lack of colored pictures. It may seem silly, but some students can be greatly encouraged by this.

It is a great book and I recomend it to anyone who plans to partake an Inorganic Chemistry course.

    4 out of 5 stars it's not bad.......2007-10-08

i'm happy with the service, i recieved the book on on time, but the book it self is awfully odd. it has some errors.

    4 out of 5 stars Clinical Chemistry.......2007-05-14

A great textbook for learning clinical chemistry. Text is very easy to understand and parallels some of the materials for the test manufacturers. The index could be improved slightly, but is still user-friendly.

    2 out of 5 stars typos galore.......2007-01-05

This book is not very helpful because it is littered with typos, not only in the text, but also in tables and graphs. I recommend that you save your money and purchase a better book then this.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and concise for the student and lab generalist.......2006-12-08

This is an excellent book to use as an introduction to clinical chemistry. The chapter layout is logical and the content finds an appropriate balance keeping things concise but with enough depth for most student MTs and generalists. Specialist lab personnel and student MTs with clinical chemistry as a career interest would probably find the Tietz Fundamentals (not the Tietz Textbook-that's overkill) to be a better investment though as it covers topics at greater depth.

5 out of 5 stars A CONCISE, BUT GOOD BOOK.......2000-05-07

ALTHOUGH KAPLAN'S BOOK CLINICAL CHEMISTRY IS MORE EXTENSE, AND COVERS THE SUBJECTS QUITE DEEPLY, THIS BOOK IS A CONCISE, AND GOOD, ALTERNATIVE. IT'S MAIN ADVANTAGE IS THAT ALL SUBJECTS ARE NEWLY REVISED AND TRIES TO OFFER THE CLASSICAL AND NEWEST METHODS IN USE IN CLINICAL LABORATORIES.

1 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2007-09-18

I have to use this textbook for one of my classes, and I must say, it is horrible. The examples for problems in the book hardly give any explanation of what they are doing. The questions at the end of the chapter are very difficult and looking back at the chapter just makes the question even more confusing. I like to use textbooks when I do not understand what is going on in my class, but this one does not help at all! I think the only way you can understand this book is if you are already well educated in the course. Everytime I am assigned problems in the book, I cringe, because I know I am going to be spending hours being more confused than I have ever been in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Instrumental text book review.......2007-07-20

This book covers the basics of instrumental analysis well. This is not a book for someone who needs colored illustrations and flashy pictures. The key words do not jump out of the page like many of the new undergraduate text books. The text is to the point. As with any textbook, there are some minor errors, but this book is better than some others I've encountered.

5 out of 5 stars alternatives to this book.......2007-03-09

I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews of this book. I found it to be very solid.

For those of you who don't like it you have 3 options:

either "Instrumental Methods of Analysis" by Willard, Merritt, Dean, Settle; (ISBN 0534081428) which is excellent and a true classic.

or "Chemical Analysis: Modern Instrumentation Methods and Techniques" by Francis Rouessac & Annick Rouessac

or "Chemical Instrumentation: A Systematic Approach" by Strobel and Heineman. This book, however, is very hardware oriented and not a general instrumental analysis text.

I would also recommend that you buy "Statistics and Chemometrics for Analytical Chemistry" by James N. Miller & Jane C. Miller. It does a much better job than the cursory chapters found in regular analytical texts. Get the 4th or 5th edition. For a paperback, this book is ridiculously expensive if you buy new. Try to find a used copy.

While the book by Miller & Miller is good, it's no substitute for a 1 or 2 semester course in stats. A good book for this material might be Statistics for Research, Third Edition by Shirley Dowdy, Stanley Wearden, Daniel Chilko (ISBN 047126735X)

Check out my other reviews for other undergrad. chem books.

2 out of 5 stars So disorganized a book that it hurts.......2005-12-24

There is no clear organization in this book. Seems like they took many papers and at random picked paragraphs out of them. The only place they show organization is when they are introducing stuff in a chapter.
Works as a reference book because you can look in the back and find the 6 or seven places your topic of interest is scattered in the book. but in general the gain of knowledge through the organization of this book is near to impossible.
The authors of this book should be ashamed of themselves for doing such harm to Chemistry students.

2 out of 5 stars Style of writing is painful.......2005-09-02

Just start reading the introduction, or flip to anywhere in this book to see all you need to know about it's readability: a bit rough to say the least.

For example, in the introduction, the concept of carrying binary data in a shorter period of time on a wire than several measured pulses was presented in such a confusing manner that I was forced to read it 4 times to understand what was already a simple and understood concept to me. The excessive formality of this book is a killer.. It reads at times like a formal mathematics proof book, however, at other times it is a bit more readable.

Like people said.. use this for reference.. not for a textbook.
