    Book Description

The third edition of Concepts in Biochemistry makes the most applied and accessible biochemistry text on the market. Students are more successful with Boyer because it isn't intimidating and it makes clear the relevance of the material to their future careers. Like the first two editions, Boyer is written for students who need an introduction to the fundamental principles of biochemistry and are preparing for a career in the allied health sciences, the biological sciences, and the environmental sciences. (The text is also appropriate for use in one-semester courses developed for chemistry majors as a result of the new American Chemical Society requirements for three-credit hours of biochemistry coursework.)

The modern, student-friendly organization sets the book apart from the competition because the early placement of nucleic acids enhances the traditional coverage of protein structure and function, and metabolism. As an example, it is now possible to present metabolism in a more contemporary fashion, emphasizing gene regulation and integration.

Rod Boyer is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He has a PhD from Colorado State and recently spent a sabbatical year at Nobel Prize winner Tom Cech's lab at the University of Colorado. He is on the Editorial Board for the journal, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education and has been very active in education affairs for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

          Book Description

Analogous to genomics, which defines all genes in a genome irrespective of their functionality, metabolomics seeks to profile "all" metabolites in a biological sample irrespective of the chemical and physical properties of these molecules.

Metabolomics has the potential of defining cellular processes as it provides a measure of the ultimate phenotype of an organism, as defined by the collage of small molecules, whose levels of accumulation is altered in response to genetic and environmentally induced changes in gene expression.

This book presents a guide for new practitioners of metabolomics, providing insights as to the current use and applications of metabolomics.

            Book Description

Photobiology is an important area of biological research since a very large number of living processes are either dependent on or governed by light that we receive from the Sun. Among various subjects, photosynthesis is one of the most important, and thus a popular topic in both molecular and organismic biology, and one which has a considerable impact throughout the world since almost all life on Earth depends upon it as a source of food, fuel and oxygen. However, for growth of plants, light is equally essential, and research on photomorphogenesis has revealed exciting new developments with the application of newer molecular biological approaches. The present book brings together various aspects of photosynthesis, biology of pigments, light regulation of chloroplast development, nuclear and chloroplast gene expression, light signal transduction, other photomorphogenetic processes and some photoecological aspects under one cover. The chapters cover biochemical and molecular discussions of most of the above topics in a comprehensive manner and include a wide range of `hot topics' that are currently under investigation in the field of photobiology of cyanobacteria, algae and plants. The authors of this book are selected international authorities in their fields from USA, Europe, Australia and Asia. The book is designed primarily to be used as a text book by graduates and post-graduates. It is, however, also intended to be a resource book for new researchers in plant photobiology. Several introductory chapters are designed as suitable reading for undergraduate courses in integrative and molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics.

              Book Description

Drug Metabolism: Current Concepts provides a comprehensive understanding of the processes that take place following ingestion of a medicinal agent or xenobiotic, with an emphasis on the crucial role of metabolism (biotransformation). How a sound knowledge of these phenomena is incorporated into the design of effective new drug candidates is also explained. The user-friendly text focuses on concepts rather than extraneous details and is supported by many illustrated examples of biotransformations as well as frequent references to current critical reviews and articles highlighting the nature of research objectives in this vibrant area of medicinal development. The final topic on strategies for drug design relies on the background provided by the rest of the book. This book is ideally suited as an advanced text for courses in drug metabolism for students of medicine, pharmacy, pharmacology, biochemistry; and for courses in drug design and drug delivery for students of medicinal chemistry. It is also appropriate for professional seminars or courses that relate to the fate of a drug in the body, drug interactions, adverse reactions and drug design.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the subject matter and well written!.......2003-03-20

The text provides an excellent overview of biotechnology for a person at the College level. The book is probably too shallow in depth for someone who wants to actually major in the subject matter. Nonetheless, the book serves its intended purpuse well to introduce biotechnology at a reaonably sophisticated level to the student. The book starts with the basics of organic chemistry principles and expands them to biochemistry. Well done!
All the important technological and commercial concepts relevant to biotechnology are present and explaned well through text as well as diagrams. Perhaps one aspect that science books don't emphasize is writting style. The books is extremely clear and well written and can probably serve as an example of good technical writting style. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is serious about wanting to understand Biotechnology. As long as you hand Freshmand chemistry this book should serve you.

4 out of 5 stars Just the basics.......2002-07-16

If you are looking for a clear and interesting summary of many key concepts of Biotechnology, this book is for you. The author does a nice job of distilling the important concepts for both the scientist and layman alike. For the scientist, the book provides a nice review of the basics, and for the layman, it explains many difficult principles. At the end of each chapter the author also provides a lively discussion of some interesting practical applications and problems solved by Biotechnology.

              Book Description

This second edition continues to innovatively review the toughest concepts in biochemistry for maximum comprehension in a short period of time. Unlike conventional texts or review books that stress memorizing facts, BASIC CONCEPTS stresses the mastering of fundamental concepts, so that the reader truly comprehends the material and feels comfortable applying it. Dr. Gilbert uses simple, jargon-free language and award-winning teaching techniques including algorithms, mnemonics and clinical examples.

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Helpful.......2007-02-16

I did not find this book very helpful at all, and I actually found reading a longer text, such as Voet et al., less time consuming.

4 out of 5 stars great book for the forgetfuls.......2006-06-16

for people like me who have short term memory, it's great to be able to remember biochemistry in 10 min.

1 out of 5 stars Neicht! No German should buy this book........2001-06-04

I did not find this book helpful at all. Only for lazy students who do not want to study!!!

3 out of 5 stars Very helpful basic information.......1999-11-19

Great help for those of us who aren't scientists by nature. If you're struggling with your textbook I recommend this as a good supplement - especially right before exam time! Not detailed enough to skip class though, but worth the time and money.
