5 out of 5 stars school required purchase.......2007-08-23

The high school required the purchase of this book for the AP Chemistry class. I was pleased it was so easily accessible and used copies were available. The school year just began, I am sure it must be a good source of help for the students since the teacher is requiring it at the beginning of the year.

4 out of 5 stars Great review book.......2007-07-27

This book covers almost all topics you'll see on the actual test. And it really helps if you need an overall review just before the test.
However, it didn't cover much on the Organic and Nuclear chemistry. Well, even though these two topics are not emphasized(about 5 MC), you really need to go over them if you really want a 5 on the test.
And, do every question(including the free response questions).
Be confident, the actual test will be easier than you have thought.

2 out of 5 stars cracking the ap chemistry exam.......2007-06-12

The book was written in - in PEN! All the answers ! It made for a waste of time and money to get a book you could not use as a study tool.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Concise Review Book.......2007-05-23

This review book has been really helpful in preparaing me for the AP Chem exam. Unlike other review books, this book does not include a whole lot of review information. This is good because when you review, too much conceptual reviews can actually hinder the review process, something that Baron review books tend to do very much. In addition, the problems on the back of every section are very useful, although it's actually a little harder than the actual problems on the exam. Overall, this book has been very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars AP Chemistry .......2007-05-14

This book is an excellent review source for the AP Chemistry exam. I was very satisfied with the material. The only problem noted was that the free response section of the review is not in the current format of the test. The material, however, is relevant. Would highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely phenomenal.......2007-07-24

I had a terrible teacher for AP Chemistry, and about a month before the AP exam, I bought this book. I read it through the whole way, did all the practice questions, and got a 5! It was all the book, too; the next highest grade in the class was a 3.

This book will teach you everything you need to know for the exam. My only complaint was that I didn't get it any earlier -- I wish I could have used it to study for in-class tests as well :)

5 out of 5 stars the most thorough AP chemistry book i have seen.......2007-01-24

if you want to get a 5, and have over a month to study (like me), you *need* this book. it's definitely longer than other books, so you'll have more to study from. however, if you're hoping for just a 3 or 4, and don't have too much time, you'll probably be ok with another book.

4 out of 5 stars Good preparation for AP Chemistry.......2007-01-13

It's probably the best resource out there for preparation for the Advanced Placement Chemistry exam. It tells you what to expect, gives a study schedule, gives you practice exams with explanations, and is very up-to-date. It's not a must-have though, because there are plenty of other good resources out there.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy!.......2006-12-27

The AP Chemistry exam is certainly one of the hardest. However, my high school teacher taught like a college professor, which made the exam easy as child's play. The AP class was offered during first semester in my school, and I had to take the exam at the end of the year...like three months later. The Barron's book helped me tremendously in review and practice. I flipped through the book and read all the material I remembered my teacher lecturing about. And then, I skipped the contents that I know won't be on the test. Furthermore, I scored a 5 and I accidentally skipped a portion on the free response. I found out about that like one minute before time was called. But I still walked out of the testing room confident with this book.

4 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS.......2006-07-04

This book is GREAT for its content; it covers all the topics in specific detail, though some are clearly superfluous. It really helped me on the experimental parts (i.e. common colors or smells of chemicals, etc). I did not take any of the practice tests in this book because I knew and heard that they were insanely hard and depressing. Instead, I took the practice tests out of the Princeton Review AP Chemistry and scored a 5 on both of them. I recently just received my score and I got a 5! This book is a must for those who want a thorough review on AP Chemistry.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Only helpful in certain areas.......2005-08-27

I got a 3 on the exam with a teacher and a chem program at school which had never had anyone even attempt the AP test. However, this book alone will not get you a 2. This book is excellent when it comes to teaching you how to do the math but horrible when teaching you concepts. The princton review is excellent at teaching you concepts, but horrible at teaching you how to do the math. So my suggestion is you do them together and with your college Chem book. I pretty much taught myself everything and am proudly probably the first student at my school to pass the Chem AP test. I've also been told Barron's is quite good so you could try that as well. So only accompanying princton review could this book be helpful, labs don't really help much unless you actually do them. Don't be mistaken, this book won't tell you how to do the lab specifically, only skims through them.

2 out of 5 stars horrible resource.......2005-02-27

it has an awesome lab review section, but the review was nonexistant. I did not like how the book was put together or how it had a key terms section which did not explain the key terms. I am surprised that Cliffs would put out a book of this caliber. It's like the review was an afterthought compared to the lab section.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Option.......2004-08-18

Don't use this book. The lab guy gives the wrong impression. First off, the lab questions on the AP test are the ones you need to least worry about, usually very straighforward since you can't do a lab in a written test. In terms of the rest of the stuff in the Cliffs book, we used some of it in class and it the book is so riddled with mistakes that we stopped using it. USE PRINCETON REVIEW. Awesome book, straightforward, clear, won't put you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for getting me a 5!.......2004-07-17

Wow. This book is excellent. I had a chemistry teacher who refused to do any lab with us the entire year. We didn't even have a lab room. It was a normal classroom with no sinks or anything. I'm really good at chemistry, but I was really worried about getting a 4 because I had absolutely no lab experience. But, I read part of this book like a week before the AP test and then I totally crammed the labs in the day before the test. Now cramming doesn't normally work for me, but it worked this time! It was like a miracle. I knew every lab question. If it wasn't for this book, there is no way I could have gotten a 5. If you have good lab experience, this book may be of no help to you. But if you haven't done a lab at all in your chemistry class, you want a 5 on the AP test, and you don't want to deal with all the hard to find chemicals and perform every lab at home, then YOU HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK! It will get you a 5 like me. I also recommend Princeton Review AP Chemistry.

1 out of 5 stars Remotely helpful? I think not........2004-03-05

I bought this book to help me, as I'm not the best in the chemistry department. If you are in a similar situation, do not buy this book. It has an extremely minimal amount of actual study material, and even skips over some topics completely, even after listing them in the 'key terms' section at the front of the chapter. Shouldn't a study book actually define the key term rather than leave you to look it up and study it from other sources? You might buy it thinking it looks kind of good, but then the week before a big intermolecular forces test, find out that it doesn't mention so much as a sentence on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, underrated series.......2004-03-22

To bluefox2003:
A lot of students, myself included, find the Barron's a bit too technical and dry. I went to the bookstore and saw 5 Steps to a 5, not expecting much, but it turned out to be, for me at least, the most clear, concise, interesting, yet still complete and full review of AP Chem. It reads like a friend explaining the ideas to you. Not a dumb friend, either, but one who is interested in AP Chem, talking to someone who is interested in AP Chem. If you think that the problems are too easy, it might be because they are, in fact, supposed to be that easy when they are explained well. Just my two cents.

1 out of 5 stars stop lying..........2004-02-01

It's useless... I bought one last month and started to use it for preparing the AP Exam... but it's useless... the tricks are "common sense" and the practice problems are too easy... if you really wanna buy a good review book... use Barron or Princeton Review...

5 out of 5 stars This book is great and my high school students love it........2004-01-28

The type in the book is easy to read and the examples are easy to follow. A couple of my students started using it last week and they say it explains things better than their textbook does.

5 out of 5 stars This book has everything you need for the AP Chemistry test........2007-07-07

Quite simply, there is no other AP review book that will prepare you for the AP Chemistry test as well as Master AP Chemistry, by Peterson's.

While this book may be larger than the other study books (especially Princeton Review) it's because little is left out. For some, this book may be too excessive and detailed, but with colleges turning to accepting 5's as the only way to CLEAR college courses, this is the book to buy.

I'm not saying this is the best book without a reason, I actually have/borrowed all the others books for AP Chem that are sold at my local Barnes & Noble. This includes: Princeton, 5 Steps to a 5, Cliffnotes, and Barron's. I found the other books to have annoying commentary (entirely unnecessary), to be TOO shallow, or to have an annoying layout.

Master AP Chemistry has every bit of information needed: to survive the test (3) through the "Summing it Up" section at the end of every chapter; to show proficiency (4) through the "Summing it Up," Bolded Words, and practice tests at the END of the Entire book; and to show mastery (5)through everything above, the in-depth information in every chapter, and the tests at the end of each chapter.

I happened to get a 5 on the AP Chem test, and that score has saved me from taking general chemistry as a Freshman in college with about, 400-500 other students (in each lecture hall.) I have no doubt that this book was what enabled me to get a '5', but I also must suggest three other important factors.
    1. A willingness to study and invest "Free-time" to pass
    2. A good/experienced teacher
    3. Practice/Old AP tests (Collegeboard's website and your teacher should have old AP tests)*Format changed this year on 'Reactions' portion, but old tests still do an ample job preparing*

However good a study guide might be, you, the test-taker have to be accustomed to how the test "works," it's layout, wording, timing, subject matter, and the expectation that a normal 'A' (90%) on this test is unlikely, so you WILL miss questions and you can't let this bother you.

Once again, Colleges are turning to 5's and no other book prepares students as well, but you're the one who has to open it and read it.

assist in studying for the Fundamentals of Engineering
Examination. The text has a good coverage of the periodic
table of elements, emphasis on the halogens, oxidation-
reduction, Boyle's Law, the atomic radii,pH, solutions,
precipitates, exothermic and endothermic reactions, the anode
and cathode, amphoteric substances, lattice points and a variety
of problem sets. Overall, the text is very helpful for studying
the Fundamentals of Engineering Examinations. I would supplement
this with a formal engineering review course and a reasonably
comprehensive text on organic chemistry. A strength of this text
is that it provides many practical examples. It is highly
abbreviated in form. I would utilize the contents to practice
a variety of problems customarily found on collegiate-level
examinations. The author has a detailed explanation of the
preferred solution set. I encountered several problems with

alternate solutions; however, this is a minor aspect.
The thrust of the text is good for preparing students in
    applied chemistry.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away: it is full of unrealistic questions and errors.......2003-05-12

This book provides six full-length practice exams. Unfortunatelly after going over them with my daughter I have discoverd that the questions do not realistically represent the coverage and the level of dificulty of recent AP tests. Even worse the book if full of errors, omissions, and logical flaws, in questions themself and in the provided explanations (and I know what I am talking about since I teach chemistry in college).

2 out of 5 stars A Book that looks appealing, but is inaccurate........2002-11-07

At first glance, REA looks like the best choice in AP Chemistry- after all, it has 6 practice tests. But most of the sample questions don't reflect how the real test is like. You don't find complex logarithms on an AP Chem test, and ETS won't be nice enough to ask you which elements are considered Alkali Earth Metals. Avoid this book! It costs more than most other AP Chem tests. Instead, try the comprehensive Princeton Review AP Chemistry. REA may be good at covering AP history topics, but when it comes to science, try another brand.

4 out of 5 stars Just The Straight Stuff.......2000-04-03

The entire REA series is great if you want a book with no B.S., with neither colorful anecdotes nor silly digressions. The Chemistry book is great because it provides a subject-by-subject "method of attack" for the real AP test. The sample tests in the back give a great sounding of how much you've learned, and the short-answer explanations are really informative. All around the best way to get ready for the AP. If you want regents level, though, this book is going to strike you a little abstract. Definitely AP only.

    2 out of 5 stars Not Necessary.......2006-07-11

I purchased this book to help me prepare for the AP Chemistry exam and my class final, but when I started to read it, I put it aside and never opened it again because it was too simplistic. You're already going to know the stuff that they're telling you; the stuff that you need to know is the information that they leave out. You're much better off just sticking to your class notes. That's how I got a five.

    4 out of 5 stars SOMEWHAT REALISTIC.......2006-07-04

This book was not bad.It assumes that you have mastered almost everything about Chemistry at the AP level because it does not cover the topics in specific detail. Most of the chapters are less than 10 pages =.= It succinctly gives you all the key information (i.e. the formulas, basics, etc) but fails to help a chemistry student in distress (in my opinion). For content, I used the Barrons AP Chemistry book. However, the tests in the Princeton book was realistic especially the MC although the free response might have been a bit easy. The real AP Chemistry test that I took was extremely similar. Predictablty, scoring 5s on both of the Princeton's practice tests, I got a 5 on the test. I recommend Princeton Review as a "cheat sheet" and as good, realistic practice. If you want a throrough review, however, i would strongly recommend Barrons.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY worthwhile study tool.......2005-12-06

This book definitely saved my life. I was expecting barely a 3 on the exam; I got a 5, almost 95% due to buying this book. With barely a month left before the exam, with a teacher who had never taught the class before and an absolutely AWFUL, overcomplicated textbook, I bought this book and began looking through its sample questions and reading its review.

Not only did the review contain information that showed up directly on the exam, the sample questions were formatted in nearly exactly the same way.

My recommendation- DEFINITELY get this book, then study like mad. Do as many problems as you possibly can, and make sure to read over the explanations, since they REALLY help.

Good luck, and don't stress too much!

5 out of 5 stars Various Reviews for AP Chem books.......2005-07-27

So, being this the first year I took AP courses, I went a little over zealous and purchased 3 AP Chem books. Furthermore, a friend lent me another, and I skimmed through a few more. Let me say right out I got a 4. I was a bit disappointed, but I know I should have started studying harder and more rigorously. Even so, I believe that this book (Princeton's) positively contributed to my score.

    Princeton Review
If you purchase only one review book, this is definately the one to get. This was the only one I really read through. The content was worthwhile, not too long, and fairly easy to read. I did most of the questions at the end of the chapters, but only took a quick look at the MC and Free Response questions at back of the book. I was a bit pressed for time. I finished reading the book the day right before the AP test. Really bad, I know. However, I had been preparing for a few weeks by doing old AP tests and tons and tons of old FR questions. I did almost all of the FR's on collegeboard' website. This book is definately not enough to get a 5, or even a four on. You should definately get a hold of old tests and do them! Also, try to keep up with the text book during the year to make sure you at least have some idea of what's going on. With that said, I can add one more high point of this book... the REACTIONS SECTION. The best I've seen. Very thorough, and much better than the other books. There are a few more rules than those in the books though, so make sure you ask a teacher or do enough to recognize patterns.

    Barrons
This is definately one of the worse ones out of the lot. (Second worse.) I had read AP Euro review books before(since the test was a few days before) and was in the process of reading Princeton's chem book. How is this relavent you ask? Well, I've heard that some review books are notorious for huge, massive errors. I had personally never experienced this before and didn't notice any in the ones I had already read. Then there was the Barron's book. I looked at a few pages, and knew this was not worth the time. Specifically, I looked at the reactions questions at the end of the book. Some of the answers were WRONG! Very discouraging and wasted my time. Don't even bother with this book.

    REA
The absolute worst one out of all of them. A friend lent this to me since she had it laying around. Please note that this book was from a couple years back (though review books don't change too much). I read about 1/4 of the book. Waste of time. Hard to read, wierd diagrams, doesn't contain what's need for the test. Really makes me leary from buying more of their review books in the future.

    Kaplan
One of the better ones. The periodicity section in particular stands out. It was well written. I did not read this as I had absolutely no time, but it looks like a good, reliable, review. Seems a lot thicker than Princeton's, but would probably be more thorough. The reactions section though is definately inferrior.
This would be a good backup/ supplement to Princeton's version. Now I wish I did not procrastinate and instead spent time reading Kaplan's review.

    Petersons
I did not have personal experience, but a friend owned this review guide. I did however have a brief skim through it. Every thing looked correct, and I liked the format and tone. It reminded me of Kaplan's (around the same thickness too), and my friend expressed that this was quality. There weren't any reviews for this on Amazon, so unfortunately, I did not get this.

All in all, I think I scored a solid 4 and not a 5 just because of the tricky multiple choice (I should have spread my time more evenly, but I did finish). And some dues go to my crazy chem teacher. He expected us to learn the material from reading just the really, really long text books and doing questions in the back. Most people didn't, and he often said he knew most of us would not pass. He gave a few lectures and stuff but not too indepth. I never comprehended the labs we did, but luckily there weren't specific questions on them. Also he said that some sections, like organic chemistry, weren't on the test. Except they were, and it wasn't just one question. Maybe if I had spent time doing the Princeton Reviews 2 tests, and reading through it again I could have gotten a 5.

4 out of 5 stars It wants 5 stars, so I'll give it 4........2005-07-02

This book does a fair job at doing what it's supposed to do, and that's review. Basically you should already have challenged yourself by going through a textbook or something and really learning chem, then you can go through this book as a refresher. The set-up of this book is very good, but you can't just read through it for it to be worth your while. The essays in this book were pretty helpful, and some were practically the same as on the real AP test. If you actually take the time to write out actual essays like you would on the real thing, you can also enhance your BSing skills. If you are ever stuck, just talk about atomic radius or something. So somewhere in the book it says it has everything you need to know to get a 5, which may be true, but it doesn't have the detail for you to comprehend all the material just from reading what's practically an outline of the course. So get the book, use Barron's too because it's more detailed, and then really learn things from a textbook. Alright, so like all the other losers that wrote their scores for their credibility, I too got a 5. There.
