This is a very complete and up-to-date review of the topic. It is written by two people who are intimately involved with the latest research and commercial developments in this area. All aspects of Fischer-Tropsch technology are covered in great detail along with the complementary technologies such as gasification. An excellent set of references is supplied. Historically relevant work is also covered. The only negative comment I can make is a minor one; the English is not always grammatically correct and I would suggest some punctuation changes. However, this does not affect the clarity of the presentation.

I had this book as my textbook for my "surface science" class. It is a great book for reference though it does take time and effort to comb through chapters to find what you need. A lot of detailed paper-review-style chaptors which is great for research while it is a little bit overwhelming to people without any physical chemistry background.

Excellent overview or starting point.......2004-06-17

How useful and valuable this book is largely depends on what you expect from it. This book provies an overview of the extremely broad field of surface chemistry. As a starting point to learning about that field, this book is excellent. There is validity to the criticisms offered by some other reviewers of this text. The derivations often don't give enough detail and there's not much help in the way of example problems, which can make it difficult for the student to use in a classroom setting. Do not expect extremely detailed and thorough treatments of any particular area of surface chemistry. Nearly any chapter in this book could (and does) have entire texts (and courses) devoted exclusively to that one subject. What you can expect from this book is an introduction to the key areas of surface chemistry. The book is loaded with references to point the interested reader in the right direction for more detailed and thorough treatments of the variety of different areas of surface chemistry. For this reason, I have found it to be a good starting point for learning more about several subjects. In short, this book is excellent if you want a broad overview of the field or need a place to start learning about a particular area of surface chemistry. It's not worth much if you are looking for extremely in depth, thorough treatments of specific areas of surface chemistry.

Physical Chemistry of Surfaces.......2001-11-12

I used this book as a text in my class 'Physical Chemistry of Liquids, Interfaces, and Colloids'. This book is not a textbook. My students are complaining all the time about the presentation of topics as well as the extent of derivations, interpretations, and lack of examples. I must admit that I have made a mistake for choosing this text for my course. If you are planing to use it as a text, please go through a few of the derivations and you will notice that the book offers very little to a student.

The new edition is a lot worse than the earlier editions.......1999-05-27

I have found the book very difficult to follow. The book reads more like a research paper than a textbook, in both style and content (for example, there are too many references, most of which are completely unnecesary). Many symbols are left undefined. There are many gaps in the derivations. Many concepts (e.g. the Maragoni effect) are introduced out of proper context. I would not recommend it to anybody. Get an earlier edition if you can.

To many references.......1998-11-17

It was the text book of a discipline in my graduate couse. I and my friends had too many troubles with it, the text is dry with to many references. The text simply order you to look for some reference, instead of explain some obscure part of theory. We only understood many of the problems after Adamson sent the problems answer. The solve some problems we must looked for some references cited in the text, and that took a lot of time. During the couse we used to say that some problems are impossible to solve, others you don't give the correct answer, and the last ones you solve correctely, but you don't understand the why you solve by that way. We used the 5th edition until chapter 10, than we tried another book.

I am a practicing buddhist and contrary to the first reviewer I believe this book is very much in line with buddhist teachings. One has to draw their own parallels from it. But I strongly recommend it to any one who is interested in developing their inner world. Any one who believes that our minds/souls are huge un-tapped energy fields will enjoy this book. Its [inexpensive] and it is easy to ready. Great book.

Throughout the whole book, there are so much information being repeated over and over again. Otherwise it might be only 5 pages book. The author has limited knowledge in this area. It seems that the reason for writing this book is to make money out of his father's name (Edgar Cayce).

This book is packaged as a massmarket paperback, the kind you'd buy in a supermarket checkout line. I bought it casually and didn't expect more than a mildly interesting collection of Edgar Cayce's thoughts on the subject of channelling. Wrong! Reed is an excellent writer, and presents some rather huge ideas with remarkable clarity. This book is intelligent, fast-paced (but thorough) and most of all -- exciting! I couldn't wait to try some of the end-of-chapter exercises, especially the one on communicating with your Higher Self through dreams. The implications for creativity (writing, music, etc.) are empowering too.

A warm and illuminating guide.......2001-05-29

Having never read any books in the Edgar Cayce series before, I found that this book not only lived up to the promise of its title, but also provided an excellent introduction to Edgar Cayce's work in general. The idea of "channelling" sounds a little dated, but the opening chapter put me at ease immediately with an explanation of this very wide-ranging word.

The remainder of the book is a thorough discussion of all kinds of channelling, from dreams, creative and inspirational writing, imagination and intuition, to the less everyday techniques of channelling other spirits, trance channelling and healing. Even in these later chapters Henry Reed does a marvellous job of providing down to earth descriptions and explanations and is quick to point out the pitfalls of some methods.

Each chapter opens with the sayings of Edgar Cayce. As a newcomer to his work I had some difficulty grasping the meaning or significance of these quotes. Henry Reed's explanations, on the other hand, I found both clear and fascinating. His illustrative diagrams I found especially illuminating. Henry Reed also draws upon his own reading and research to amplify and demonstrate his explanations.

Although this book is not really set out as a "how to" guide, there are many suggestions for meditation and other exercises, and some group exercises, which are well worth following.

In the end, channelling your higher self is about being yourself as only you can be. As Henry Reed says, "God intends for the world to have your expression. Use your intuition to know your soul's identity, your heart's true desire, and let it be." And Henry Reed has given a great deal of himself and his own love in writing this book. His warmth shines through.

This is one of the better and more complete books on surface science. The book devotes seperate chapters to the various aspects of surfaces, such as structure, dynamics, thermodynamics, reactions at surfaces, etc... The chemistry and physics of surfaces are covered in detail, and many topics are explained in detail; i.e. the difference between chemisorption and physiosorption. The various properties of surfaces (work function, electron affinity, reconstructions) are explained and literature data is provided through extensive use of tables, charts and figures. This book would serve as a good textbook for a class on the same topic. This book would also serve as a great reference book. The end of each chapter contains an extensive list of references. The book includes a large list of acronyms commonly used in surface science. There are also extensive lists of experimental data of surfaces; an example is the list of known reconstructions for both bare surfaces and surfaces terminated with different molecules.

There are four major limitations to this text. First, it covers the science of surfaces from a non-biological point of view. Second, there is no dedicated chapter on techniques used for analyzing surfaces. Instead, the different techniques are described in the sections that deal with related properties. For example, the work function, electron affinity, and techniques used to determine these properties are all described in the chapter on electrical properties. Third, this book was printed in 1994, making it somewhat dated, especially in a field that is growing as rapidly as surface science. Last, there is very little discussion of how computer modeling, specifically quantum mechanical calculations, can be used to study surfaces. This last drawback is partially due to the book being published in 1994, when quantum calculations on surfaces was still somewhat rare in the scientific literature.

In all, I would not buy this book, but would wait for a newer edition.

Catalyst production for the transformation of crudes into gasoline and other fuel products is a billion dollar/year business and fluid cracking catalysts (FCCs) represent almost half of the refinery catalyst market.
During the cracking reactions, the FCC surface is contaminated by metals (Ni, V, Fe, Cu, Na) and by coke deposition. As a result, the catalyst activity and product selectivity is reduced to unacceptable levels thus forcing refiners to replace part of the recirculating equilibrium FCC inventory with fresh FCC to compensate for losses in catalyst performance. About 1,100 tons/day of FCC are used worldwide in over 200 fluid cracking catalyst units (FCCUs).
It is for these reasons that refiners' interest in FCC research has remained high through the years almost independantly, of crude oil prices. However, recent oil company mergers and the dissolution of research laboratories, have drastically decreased the number of researchers involved in petroleum refining research projects; as a result the emphasis of research has shifted from new materials to process improvements and this trend is clearly reflected in the type of papers contained in this volume.

Modern spectroscopic techniques continue to be essential in the understanding of catalyst performance and several chapters in the book describe the use of ²⁷Al, ²⁹Si and ¹³C NMR to study variation in FCC acidity during aging and coke deposition. In addition several chapters have been dedicated to the modeling of FCC deactivation, and to the understanding of contact times on FCC performance. Refiners efforts to conform with environmental regulations are reflected in chapters dealing with sulfur removal, metals contaminants and olefin generation.
