Book Description

This book has so closely matched the requirements of its readership over the years that it has become the first choice for chemists all over the world. The fourth edition retains its original aims to teach the fundamentals of heterocyclic reactivity and synthesis in a way that is understandable to second- and third-year undergraduate chemistry students. It is important to emphasise that the more advanced sections of the book make it an important reference work for chemists at all levels who are working with heterocyclic compounds in industry.New sections deal with heterocyclic aspects of combinatorial chemistry, bioprocessing, and conducting polymers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Valuable reference to all facets of heterocyclic chemistry.......1999-08-28

This book gives a thorough review of the chemistry of each particular class of heterocycles, covering structure, reactivity, and synthesis. Unique to this book is a coverage of the organometalic chemistry associated with each class. It is my opinion that this book is a touch better than the Thieme and Gilcrest heterocyclic books, based mostly on the organization of material. I do wish, however, that the authors had given aminoheterocycles a bit more attention!

The book is your source to a plethora of additional problems. Yet don't expect the exam problems to be similar to those you find in this Schaum series. You might find some of these problems extra strenuous or over-simplified. For all the major functional groups, the book does provide lots of practice problems in reaction products, reactivity, and stereochemistry. You might need to cover up the solutions which immediately follow the questions. Students should foucs on soloving the mechanism-type of problems from textbooks before looking at this book. Check this out from your library!

      Book Description

Indoles continue to be of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry and at the current time several thousand specific new derivatives are reported annually. Research has been driven by the wide range of indole derivatives which occur in nature and through the biological activity of many indole derivatives, of both natural and synthetic origin. This book provides a systematic guide to the most useful and important reactions in the field for both synthesis and synthetic modification of the indole ring. While including the most recently developed and promising methods, it also updates informationavailable on classical methods to give the reader an up-to-date and comprehensive view of the subject. The methods are illustrated by procedures drawn from the literature and by tables including examples chosen to indicate both the scope of applicabilityand variations in methodology. The organization of the book is based on the retrosynthetic concept of identifying the bond(s) formed in the reaction, which in turn identifies potential starting materials.

        Book Description

Carbohydrates are widely distributed in nature and widely available, and so are considered as a promising feedstock for the preparation of many organic chemical compounds. They are particularly useful in the preparation of nitrogen heterocycles because of their related structural characteristics and easy availability.Synthesis of Naturally Occurring Nitrogen Heterocycles from Carbohydrates will review the recent literature dealing with use of carbohydrates as raw materials in the synthesis of these materials. The text contains six chapters arranged according to the complexity of the heterocyclic compounds discussed, ranging from five to seven membered rings and from single to multiple fused rings. The book provides a detailed discussion of the various synthetic approaches to these compounds, using carbohydrate starting materials, and does not merely reference synthetic methodology but attempts to give as much detail as possible on the actual experimental conditions used, in such a way that the chemist can use the information directly to design a multi-step synthesis. It discusses the different approaches to the synthesis of a wide range of naturally occurring nitrogen heterocycles in a format that enables the reader to make comparisons and decisions on whether to use a certain procedure, to modify it, or to devise a new synthetic methodology.

Heterocyclic chemistry is the largest of the classical divisions of organic chemistry. Heterocyclic compounds are widely distributed in nature, playing a vital role in the metabolism of living cells. Their practical applications range from extensive clinical use to fields as diverse as agriculture, photography, biocide formulation and polymer science. The range of known compounds is enormous, encompassing the whole spectrum of physical, chemical and biological properties. The Handbook of Heterocyclic Chemistry is illustrated throughout with thousands of clearly drawn chemical structures and contains over 1500 chemical figures and reactions. The highly systematic coverage given to the subject makes this one of the most authoritative single-volume account of modern heterocyclic chemistry available.

            Book Description

This book provides a unique overview of the subject. The first half of Heterocyclic Chemistry covers general properties of heterocyclic compounds and general methods for their preparation. This provides the basis for understanding the chemistry of indivudal ring systems that is described in later chapters. This edition has been completely revised to reflect the changes that have occurred in the field since the publication of the second edition in 1992.

            4 out of 5 stars Buy Used!.......2005-08-31

The original text is indeed one of the best introductory texts on heterocyclic chemistry available. The major aromatic heterocycles are well-covered. The discussion of nonaromatic heterocycles is limited. BE ADVISED that the version sold by amazon as "new" is actually an educational print on demand from an electronic source. The text is legible, but the graphic quality is unimpressive. Some pages are cropped poorly. A well-worn used copy would be much better.

5 out of 5 stars Heterocyclic Chemistry in a Nutshell.......2000-08-08

No organic chemist should be without it. This book contains everything you need to know about the preparation and subsequent reactions of heterocyclic ring structures from simple to complex, and from the common to the seldom seen.

The book is well organized and concise. An advanced chemistry degree is not needed to understand it. Individuals with B.S. degrees in chemistry and related sciences on up will find it useful.

The book has a substantial word of mouth following, which is how I came to purchase it. I am a patent attorney in the chemical arts and find reason to refer to it several times a week.

              Book Description

This book is a "world first", since the furfural industry has been traditionally secretive to the point of appearing shrouded in clouds of mystery. Even renowned encyclopedic works have published but scant and often erroneous information on the subject.

Striking a healthy balance between theory and practice, the book leads the reader from reaction mechanisms and kinetics to the technology of making furfural by various old and new processes, using conventional raw materials or sulfite waste liquor. Detailed discussions of means of increasing the yield are of great chemical and technological interest as well as of immense economic importance.

From furfural proper, the treatise shifts to the fascinating field of wanted and unwanted by-products ranging from largely unutilized carboxylic acids to troublesome impurities such as 5-methyl furfural and 2-furyl methyl ketone, and then to extremely valuable serendipitous flavor compounds such as diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione. A wide variety of derivatives are discussed; considerable space is devoted to polytetrahydrofuran, an important building block of stretchable synthetic fibers, while furan resins from both furfural and furfuryl alcohol are given the attention commensurate with their industrial importance.

Notable supplementary chapters cover the in-line measurement of furfural, the treatment of furfural waste water, and various aspects of corrosion. A chapter on the applications of furfural elaborates not only traditional uses in extracting petroleum and vegetable oils but also the sensational discovery that furfural is a highly effective "indirect nematocide". Without becoming toxic, it changes the microflora of the soil by stimulating bacteria antagonistic to nematodes, thereby reducing the nematode population to zero, at an unprecedented low price. It is believed that this application will be the principal outlet for furfural in the future.

A comprehensive list of physical properties, some never published before, make the book an indispensable companion for producers, users and researchers alike.

A state-of-the-art collection of detailed synthetic procedures that lead to a variety of scaffolds, turn mimetics, peptide-bound replacements, and enzyme inhibitors. Topics range from unusual syntheses of amino acids to the use of a variety of linear and heterocyclic scaffolds in place of the peptide backbone. Important chemical procedures and methods include the transient protection of charged peptides as neutral prodrugs for improved blood-brain penetration and the replacement of peptide bonds with heterocyclic rings, olefins and fluoroolefins, and ketomethylenes. Synthetic protocols towards the transition-state mimics and reactive "warheads," applicable in enzyme inhibitors, are also disclosed.
