Introductory Chemistry in the Laboratory
ASIN: 0618343423 |
Book Description
Long known for its superior problem-solving pedagogy and engaging narrative style, the new edition of Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation offers unparalleled instructor and student support. This best-selling text motivates students and maintains their interest in the material by connecting chemistry to real-life experiences and emphasizing visual learning with figures that illustrate concepts and photos that depict chemical phenomena and connect chemistry with the real world.
The text helps students develop the problem-solving skills so critical to success in chemistry by teaching a thoughtful step-by-step approach to solving problems, rather than teaching them, prematurely, to use algorithms. The authors take an approach to problem solving that starts with representing the essence of problems using symbols or diagrams and ends with thinking about whether an answer makes sense.
- New! The Instructor Toolkit is a comprehensive and coordinated supplement package that helps instructors prepare for class. It contains a new Instructor's Annotated Edition, Complete Solutions Guide, and a CD-ROM package featuring the HM ClassPrep, HM Testing, Chemistry Animations and Videos CD-ROMs, and the Student Support Package.
- New! A comprehensive Student Support Package, automatically included with every new student text, features numerous resources to help students succeed in their courses. A two-sided Study Card with chemical formulas and reminders serves as a quick study aid. The password-protected Student Web Site features many useful resources, including ACE self-quizzes, interactive molecules, and flashcards of key terms. A CD-ROM features a review of the prerequisite mathematics relevant to this course. SMARTHINKING online tutoring provides free live and asynchronous study help to students.
- New! A new art program enhances the visual impact of the text while clarifying important concepts. Updated illustrations make it easier for students to connect molecular-level activity to macroscopic phenomena. The art program helps students connect abstract chemical concepts with real-life situations, motivating them to learn the material.
- New! Approximately one-third of the "Chemistry in Focus" boxes, which explore current applications of chemistry, are new to this edition.
- New! Chapter 3 now features revised sections on "Energy, Temperature, and Heat" and "Calculating Energy Changes."
- New! All content from the Student Web Site, along with HM Testing content and select assets from the Instructor Web Site, is available for professors using the popular WebCT and Blackboard course management systems.
- End-of-chapter material includes key terms, a summary of important facts, questions and problems arranged in matched pairs and keyed to chapter sections, additional problems that incorporate material from more than one section, and in-class discussion questions that promote collaborative learning and group work.
- "Math Tips" in the text, indicated by an icon, help students as they perform various calculations.
- "Cumulative Reviews" test concepts from a group of chapters. Answers for all even-numbered cumulative review exercises are included at the end of the book.
- Basic Chemistry, 5/e, (Chapters 1-15) provides basic coverage of chemical concepts and applications up through acids and bases.
- Available in both paperback and hardcover format, Introductory Chemistry, 5/e, (Chapters 1-18) expands coverage with the addition of equilibrium, oxidation-reduction reactions, electrochemistry, radioactivity, and nuclear energy.

This book made chemistry easier to understand........2007-02-23
The book has great graphs and examples. It was easy for me to read and understand the concepts explained in this book.
A very good learning tool!.......2006-08-27
This textbook is in very good shape and was taken well care of.
This hardcover book will give students many years of valuable use.
is this useful for AP chem?.......2001-06-13
this text book was provided by my school to use throughout the year in ap chem. although the step-by-step worked problems in each chapter's text were sometimes helpful, they tended to make things too complicated. when i missed a lecture and tried to complete my homework solely from the book, i found myself working problems in a completely different manner from my instructor- whose methods tended to be much faster and easier to use. in addition, i didn't see any information on solutions with mulitple solutes in the book, and unfortunately that was a major topic on the free response questions this year.
A Good Chem Book.......2000-05-28
This book, although not excellent, is very good. One of the first things you notice is how cleanly laid out it is and how the examples are clearly written in plain English. The graphs and tables in this book are not only intuitive for the non-chem. background students but are also very attractive to the eye. This was a good book and I did learn quite a large amount of information from it.

Customer Reviews:
A decent chemistry book.......2006-03-29
If you are looking at a text book then it is one of those books which you can refer to during your high school days. But I felt that it could have been more elaborate which the description claims as no nonsense and direct approach. I think myself to be a dummy in chemistry so for a dummy embellishments and elaborations help. But the price is low and it helps.
Thank heavens for a decent college chem book!.......2005-04-15
I got asked to teach chemistry very spur of the moment at our local community college. First class was a chemistry lab, for which I didn't need a chemistry book. Then two weeks later they asked me to take a chemistry class for nursing majors and handed me this absolutely awful textbook. Not only was it not well-written, the set-up for the chapters was screwy, and both the students and I found numerous mistakes in the problems and I found more on the CD-rom they gave me for testing. Geez...proofreaders needed badly!
I asked around the campus from the other chemistry professors and this book was the one most highly recommended. I could not ask the students to purchase a new book in the middle of the semester, but I can assure you I am using this book to double-check and back-up everything in the other chemistry book.
As a deaf person who is perfectly capable of teaching hearing students, and someone who has done a lot of research into learning per se...I find it a bit ludicrous that textbook writers don't seem to understand some very basic concepts. Number 1, it's been shown that deaf students do much better with visual input of any kind (not text, pictures, graphs, photos, etc.). It's also been found that hearing students do much better when given that same visual information, rather than merely lecture or text. Now why would that be any different for older students? My students in both classrooms prefer to have visual representations of what they are being taught. That's one great thing about this book...lots of great pictures. And what they don't have, I can certainly find on the Internet.
For example, the other textbook talked in text about nicotine. It wasn't very interesting. So I went and got more info about nicotine as a chemical off of the Internet, including very gross pictures of what nicotine does to the lungs. That certainly got the attention of these students who are going into nursing or other medical endeavors. I also told them about there being two types of receptors in neurons (my specialty); nicotinic and muscarinic, and explained what hitting the nicotinic receptors constantly with smoking or second-hand smoke would do.
The sciences do not exist in a vaccuum. Chemistry applies to almost all other sciences, and chemistry does not need to be boring. This book by Hein and Arena is certainly not boring, and a much better book than the one I was originally given. I have been asked back to teach again, and this will be the book I recommend.

More Useful Than The Study Guide.......2007-06-14
I took a fundamentals of chemistry class at a community college during the summer semester where the required text was the Foundations of College Chemistry, 11th Edition. It had been nearly 10 years since I last took a chemistry class so I bought the Study Guide and Solutions Manual to help me out. I found the Solutions Manual to be 1000x more useful than the Study Guide because the Solutions Manual provided the answers to the chapter questions from the textbook AND HOW THEY GOT THEIR ANSWERS. Having these solutions handy helped me comprehend the chemistry questions a lot faster since I could check my answers right away as I was doing the homework. I didn't use the Study Guide much at all. I didn't have the time to work on the additional problems offered in the Study Guide, so the Study Guide was useless to me.

Misinformation.......2007-08-25
I bought a book the foundations of chemistry, and it stated on the website that it would be shipped in 1-2 business days, and I am still waiting for my book. This order was placed on 8/21/07, and I just received an email on Friday from A-1 books stating I would receive the book between 8/29/07-9/12/07. This is a crock of nonsense, and it was very misleading advertisement. The money came out immediately from my account, and I want my money back. I am outraged by this inconvenience. I would rather pay an extra 60.00 dollars and buy it directly from my college. I will report this to the BBB.

Customer Reviews:
A life preserver for struggling chemistry students.......2007-06-20
I took chemistry in high school and barely passed. Same for gen chem in college. After that, I swore I'd never take chemistry again. Ten years later, I decided to pursue medicine, so I'd have to master chemistry once and for all.
I don't know how I'd have made it into med school without this book. So many of the concepts that stymied me in undergrad--molar mass, acid-base reactions, orbitals--all are made crystal clear. This book is one of the very few undergrad books that I didn't sell back to the bookstore, as I'm sure that I will continue to refer back to it to review the basics.
A Wonderful Text.......2006-07-29
I used this book as a student in my 10th grade chemistry course, and I enjoyed it immensely. This book develops concepts in a manner that makes them easy to understand and the chapter progression builds well on pervious lessons. The example problems provide clear and thorough steps to follow. My only complaint is that the homework questions sometimes have very little to do with the actual chapter, sometimes being about things that are not covered anywhere in the book. I highly recommend that you also purchase the student study guide, which gives many invaluable practice problems. It saved my life on many tests! All in all, this is one of the best science texts I have used.
Best Foundation College Chemistry Book.......2004-11-12
This book is well written and very easy to understand. The authors did a good job in relaying the basic concepts in chemistry. If you would like to have a career in Chemistry and did not like chemistry in high school, use this book. Reading and working through the problems of this book will improve your understanding of the subject and prepare you for future chemistry classes.

Feynman's Thesis: A New Approach to Quantum Theory
ASIN: 0691028931 |
Book Description
Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics was a revolutionary book that caused a sea change in theoretical physics. Here, John von Neumann, one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century, shows that great insights in quantum physics can be obtained by exploring the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics. He begins by presenting the theory of Hermitean operators and Hilbert spaces. These provide the framework for transformation theory, which von Neumann regards as the definitive form of quantum mechanics. Using this theory, he attacks with mathematical rigor some of the general problems of quantum theory, such as quantum statistical mechanics as well as measurement processes. Regarded as a tour de force at the time of publication, this book is still indispensable for those interested in the fundamental issues of quantum mechanics.
Customer Reviews:
.. and try to read everything else JvN wrote, too!.......2005-11-19
von Neumann's account of why he uses the mathematics he does and his critique of the Dirac formalism is worth the price of admission. Those who deride him for avoiding the delta formalism seem to have been seduced by its meretricious computational facility. von Neumann anticipated - actually began in this book and his work on continuous geometry - the modern approach via non-commutative geometry to physics (see Alain Connes), and M-theory.
Hilbert Space Formulation of QM.......2003-04-10
The ultimate source of Hilbert Space applied to Quantum Mechanics. John von Neumann was the first to systematically formulate QM in such a powerful and elegant vector space. If this is the Bible of QM in HS, Hughes is the missioner! Get the book as well -- The Structure and Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.
Has Strengths and Weaknesses.......2002-07-30
First the strengths:
(1) The author gives a rigorous proof of the incompatibility of the two theories of quantum mechanics, that is, the evolution of the state vector as determined by Schrodinger's equation and the collapse of the state vector by means of an observation. He does this by the concept of entropy.
(2) He gives a thorough treatment of the "consciousness school" of interpretation, which makes for an interesting,if not entirely convincing read.
The weaknesses:
(1) the font is a pain to read; it looks like it came off an old typewriter. I wonder why the publishers couldn't put it into a more modern readable form.
(2) Von Neumann writes this book , in part, with the intention to dispel the mathematical nonsense, as he perceives it, of the Dirac delta function. Therefore he casts everything into the unwieldy formalism required to do without the distribution. Indoubtedly he was trying to change the dirac formalism in use in quantum mechanics at the time but was fortunately unsucessful in persuading physicists to use his alternative language.
Summary: I recommend this book for anyone wishing to deepen his or her understanding of the foundations, conceptual and mathematical of quantum theory.
a classic.......2000-08-23
As an undergrad, I am sorry that I cannot share the perspectives of professionals as expressed below. After initial introductory courses, I got fascinated by certain untold conceptual issues. And one of the textbooks (probably Griffiths) suggested von Neumann had tried to prove mathematically that the classical formulation is just the furthest the formalism can go and we don't have to worry about underlying complexities. Later, Bohm created a formalism which von Neumann "proves" to be mathematically impossible in this book. I bought this book just to find out how the proof goes. But I got stuck with some tedious proofs on Hilbert space (which he calls a "digression"). This part isn't essential but as the braket notation is not used you need to consult this part. I think at least a strong background in linear algebra is required. Definitly not an introductory textbook. Most useful for those who study history of physics.
Very nice historical approach.......2000-02-01
This is not the kind of book I would recommend to a novice person in the area, but it does give a very interesting view of how was quantum mechanics born. It begins with a thorough discussion about the mathematics of Hilbert spaces and operator theory to later merge Heisenberg's and Schrodinger's theories in one rigorous mathematical theory. It makes some remarks that allows the reader to see how was the 'new' quantum theory born and developed, since it briefly discusses the theories of Heisenberg and Schrodinger in the way they originally stated them. Maybe the most disturbing issue would be the notation since in 1932 dirac had still not developed the bracket formalism.
