Customer Reviews:
Good science, but kinda boring.......2007-09-23
This book has great derivations and explains concepts well. It has no colors and limited figures, though.
Good undergrad book.......2007-04-06
Bought this as a supplement to my graduate courses in surface chemistry. While there is better text available for graduate-level study (Adamson and Gast), this book does a superb job of laying the foundation in colloids and surface chemistry. With a strong background in physical chemistry, the subject matter will be a breeze to learn. I struggled with the courses until I picked this up. I applaud the author for a fine job in organization and layout of material, as well as a basic delivery of theory.
Highly recommended.......2004-06-23
I have never taken colloidal chemistry in college. So, when I had to pick this topic up to understand the dispersion system I was working on at work, I was fortunate enough to find this book. This book taught me everything I needed to know about colloidal systems. It's well organized and intuitive. Highly recommended for students in the field
An excellent introduction to surface and interfacial phenome.......2000-09-01
As a teacher of these topics I found this book an excellent one.A very good coverage of fundamentals such as surface and interfacial tension, intermolecular and colloidal interactions, colloidal stability, liophobic and liophylic colloids, electrokinetics phenomena. All these complex topics and more are treated in a very clear and rigorous way. I strongly reccomend this book.
A great book!.......1999-10-13
This is an excellent, first-level introduction to colloids and is better than any others available in the market. The vignettes in the book alone are worth the price! Suitable for self-study!

Worthy Successor.......2000-06-29
A long-awaited but worthy successor to the book considered by many to be the bible of porous materials characterization: "Gregg & Sing" (2nd Edition, 1982). This collaboration between the Rouquerols and Ken Sing has created a detailed handbook covering not only important theoretical aspects, but copious experimental and application information too. Adsorption calorimetry gets more attention than before (not surprising given the Rouquerols' affiliation), as do "new" materials such as MCM's and "new" calculation models like DFT (Density Functional Theory) and Monte Carlo simulation. Importantly, there is a great deal of coverage given to adsorptives other than nitrogen (the most common but not necessarily the most appropriate in all cases). Hundreds of references are given for follow-up reading in areas of special interest. Anyone seeking a reliable, broad, yet highly informative coverage of adsorption methodology for porous materials characterization should invest in this title.

Customer Reviews:
outstanding plasma resource.......2007-01-16
One of the most practical and comprehensive resources on plasma phyics and engineering. The book is much easier to understand and more in depth than most other books on the subject, except for maybe chen (who takes more of a physics approach, whereas lieberman takes more of an engineering approach) This book is a must have for anyone working with or studying plasmas.
Overrated.......2000-05-05
As a praciticing process engineer my opinion is this book lacks insight. Typical text book written a professor in the academic community with no practical experience. This book spends far to much time deriving equations and not discussing the basics concepts. The author makes a half hearted attempt to relate the first 14 chapters to the real worl, in a short and inadequate Chapter 15. This is the first mail book order book i took the time to return. In all honesty this book is not worth the $90.00. Spend your money elsewhere
The book provides an excellent overview of plasma processing.......1998-12-10
This book provides an excellent introduction and overview of plasma discharges applied to semiconductor manufacturing. It is well-organized, clearly-written and full of useful examples and exercises. And unlike many books on plasma physics, it is not overly-mathematical and contains many useful physical insights. I strongly recommend this book for anyone wanting to review the field of plasma processing.
An excellent overview of common plasma processing devices.......1998-12-10
Lieberman covers many of the standard processing devices and much of the physics needed to model them effectively.
The presentation is clear and extremely useful both as a reference and as a tutorial. A must-have book for anyone interested in plasma processing.
Very Good Theoretical Coverage of Plasma's, including ECR.......1998-05-02
This book provides a theoretical overview of plasma's, including coverage of ECR applications. This was very valuable for Hitachi Etchers. The theory is presented at an undergraduate level and assumes the reader has knowledge of vector analysis. Highly recommended for any Etch Process Engineer in the Semiconductor Industry.
Book Description
Quantum Chemistry of Solids delivers a comprehensive account of the main features and possibilities of LCAO methods for the first principles calculations of electronic structure of periodic systems. The first part describes the basic theory underlying the LCAO methods applied to periodic systems and the use of wave-function-based (Hartree-Fock), density-based (DFT) and hybrid hamiltonians. The translation and site symmetry consideration is included to establish connection between k-space solid-state physics and real-space quantum chemistry methods in the framework of cyclic model of an infinite crystal. The inclusion of electron correlation effects for periodic systems is considered on the basis of localized crystalline orbitals. The possibilities of LCAO methods for chemical bonding analysis in periodic systems are discussed. The second part deals with the applications of LCAO methods for calculations of bulk crystal properties, including magnetic ordering and crystal structure optimization. The discussion of the results of some supercell calculations of point defects in non-metallic solids and of the crystalline surfaces electronic structure illustrates the efficiency of LCAO method for solids.

Book Description
Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces
As with other books in the field, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces describes what occurs when gases come in contact with various solid surfaces. But, unlike all the others, it also explains why. While the theory of surface reactions is still under active development, the approach Dr. Richard Masel takes in this book is to outline general principles derived from thermodynamics and reaction rate theory that can be applied to reactions on surfaces, and to indicate ways in which these principles may be applied. The book also provides a comprehensive treatment of the latest quantitative surface modeling techniques with numerous examples of their use in the fields of chemical engineering, physical chemistry, and materials science. A valuable working resource and an excellent graduate-level text, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides readers with:
* A detailed look at the latest advances in understanding and quantifying reactions on surfaces
* In-depth reviews of all crucial background material
* 40 solved examples illustrating how the methods apply to catalysis, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electrochemistry, and more
* 340 problems and practice exercises
* Sample computer programs
* Universal plots of many key quantities
* Detailed, class-tested derivations to help clarify key results
The recent development of quantitative techniques for modeling surface reactions has led to a number of exciting breakthroughs in our understanding of what happens when gases come in contact with solid surfaces. While many books have appeared describing various experimental modeling techniques and the results obtained through their application, until now, there has been no single-volume reference devoted to the fundamental principles governing the processes observed.
The first book to focus on governing principles rather than experimental techniques or specific results, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides students and professionals with a quantitative treatment of the application of principles derived from the fields of thermodynamics and reaction rate theory to the investigation of gas adsorption and reaction on solid surfaces. Writing for a broad-based audience including, among others, chemical engineers, chemists, and materials scientists, Dr. Richard I. Masel deftly balances basic background in areas such as statistical mechanics and kinetics with more advanced applications in specialized areas.
Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces was also designed to provide readers an opportunity to quickly familiarize themselves with all of the important quantitative surface modeling techniques now in use. To that end, the author has included all of the key equations involved as well as numerous real-world illustrations and solved examples that help to illustrate how the equations can be applied. He has also provided computer programs along with universal plots that make it easy for readers to apply results to their own problems with little computational effort.
Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces is a valuable working resource for chemical engineers, physical chemists, and materials scientists, and an excellent text for graduate students in those disciplines.

One of the best resources.......2007-09-29
This book is great. it is ideal for classes in kinetics and adsorption. It was very helpful for my graduate level courses in kinetics and chemical reactions. It is also ideal for those doing research in solid state and adsorption phenomena as well as catalysis and surface chemistry
Good book.......2003-03-21
It's a textbook for a course I'm taking, and I find it a good enough book... Useful, if not the most exciting thing I've ever read ;)
Good Review, Poor Writing/Editing.......2002-07-12
This text goes over most of the key concepts of surface reactions, but the large number of typos make it hard to read.
An excellent text book for surface chemist.......1999-08-27
This is a very comprehensive book on surface chemistry. It explains basic concept and related experimental results very well. The only thing I don't like is that he spent too much on his own theory on chemisorption, which still needs experimental proof. Nevertherless, this is a must if you intend to do some reserch on surface catalytic reactions.
