I am working on my dissertation. This book got me out of my thinking chair and to my writing desk. The philosophical approach to qualitative research is very contemporary and will take us into whole new areas of research to improve and 'polish' humanity. My only objection is the cost. Does a book like this really have to cost over $60? Too much.

When one thinks of qualitaitve research one tends to think immediately of focus groups and face to face interviews - but increasingly with research the game is shifting toward online surveys that generate wonderful amounts of open-ended content, and research projects may also involve ethnography and content analysis to gain rich insights. In other words the focus of the professional must shift toward that quesiton: "what on earth do we do with all this 'soft' data?" Those verbatims, those observation notes... there's a huge amount of data waiting for interpretation. Can you systematically analyse it?

As the title suggests, Kathy Charmaz's 'Constructing Grounded Theory' is a practical and thoughtful guide to the intricacies of undertaking qualitative research. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect with numerous 'hints' and examples from her own work. Charmaz is an excellent teacher, unafraid to challenge the work of Glaser & Strauss with humility and commonsense. Highly recommeded to all aspiring qualitative researchers.

Charmaz has used her vast experience in qualitative analysis to produce an excellent resource for qualitative researchers. Whether novice or experienced in qualitative research, Charmaz' book "starts at the start" for newer researchers; assists the reflective process of the qualitative methods; and leads the researcher to a firm research outcome thoroughly grounded by informant experience. Charmaz provides substantial examples from her own research to illustrate methods and techniques which encourage the researcher to remain on track, grounded by informant experience and to persevere with reflective and inquisitive thinking. Her book also offers suggestions for creative writing of the project report. I will be prescribing this as a basic text/reference for future qualitative research students.
A Real Contribution to Grounded Theory.......2006-10-06
As someone who writes about grounded theory and supervises PhD students using grounded theory, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this book to them and anyone else using grounded theory. It is infinitely superior to the Strauss and Corbin book which in my opinion is too restrictive and makes it difficult for graduate students to apply grounded theory. Charmaz also very cleverly avoids the schism that rose between Glaser and Strauss on the application of the method by giving the student several alternative steps. A scholarly book which is also very accessible. As someone using grounded theory, I am relieved that Kathy Charmaz wrote this book - she really does do a good job in reformulating it for 21st century researchers.
A great new book on grounded theory.......2006-07-25
As a qualitative researcher using grounded theory methods in the late stages of my dissertation process the last thing I thought I needed was yet another qualitative/grounded theory textbook. Because of the recommendation of a friend and because I am a bit of research methods nut I bought "Constructing Grounded Theory" - and I am glad that I did. I actually read the whole book.
Charmaz provides the researcher with a vivid picture of grounded theory. Throughout the book she provides easy-to-read explanations and examples for each step of the grounded theory journey. Best of all, she treats you like a thinking scholar. You are not forced into a method because of dogmatic language, instead you are tantalized to think for yourself and develop solutions to your own research problems.
This is an important book to read if you are a grounded theory researcher.

As explained in the acknowledgements, this book grew out of research projects of the authors. It seeks to explain how one draws valid meaning from qualitative data. The focus of the book, as a consequence, is analysis. The authors see themselves as logical positivists. Three components of analysis are: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification.
Like a large number of other scholars, they see compatibility between qualitative and quantitative research. They contend that "qualitative research can be outright 'confirmatory.'"
This book covers the basics of doing a qualitataive study. It is a helpful reference to use for experienced researchers as well as an excellent introduction for beginners.

Not up to par with other Schaum's outlines on mathematics.......2006-04-21
This is one of the more poorly written Schaum's outlines I have encountered. The theory is very murky and the author gives no clear direction as to where he is going with this material and what it all means. PDE is a hard enough subject without working a bunch of meaningless problems that leave you wondering what it is you are supposed to have learned. Instead, I suggest you read "Introduction to Partial Differential Equations with Applications" by Zachmanoglou and Thoe in order to understand the mathematical underpinnings of PDE. Then read "Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers" to get a thorough feel for how PDE is used to solve real-world problems. Both books usually sell used for under $10 each, making them cost-effective alternatives to this Schaum's outline.

I have not read this book, but if it is anything like the author's previous attempts at writing it will leave you feeling angry. I read his advanced calculus book and it was awful. I found 16 mistakes on one page! This was the first book on advanced calculus I read and I was unable to follow the logic sequence. It wasn't until later after reading other books and mastering the subject that I discovered why. The examples were full of major errors. Not only that but he wastes a great deal of space repeating assumptions before each new section. As a result the actual material covered is sparse.

This handbook is designed to remedy that and to present students and researchers with a systematic method for interpreting qualitative data’, whether derived from interviews, field notes, or documentary materials. A GT Workshop under $50.......2006-12-14
This book by Anshelm Strauss is the text and presentation of a workshop on Grounded Theory. (Anshelm Strauss is half of the team that invented this qualitative research methodology in the 1960's.) What is beneficial about this book is that it takes you through the critical thinking involved in content analysis and the development of core phoenomenon.
It is not an easy read-- but nothing about Grounded Theory is.
What this book provided is a clearly written, strong resource that students can reference repeatedly to get their qualitative research conceptualized to the depth and breath needed to present and complete their research.

I don't feel the need to reiterate the praises that have been given this book as to its usefulness for latent print examiners.
I can say, however, that this book is great for students of forensic science (like myself) or the average reader as well. Unlike popular accounts of forensic science, it is not thrilling or adventurous. Those types of books will tell you that a person can leave a fingerprint at a scene, an investigator can find it, and then match it up in a database. Slim on the details, high on the "excitement" scale. And unlike the average MFS class, it is not dry, boring, and intended to give you only enough knowledge to do some damage.
So, for those of us interested in how forensic science -actually- works, and in depth, this book is a great textbook covering all aspects of fingerprint analysis. It includes a particularly good chapter detailing nothing but the ways that fingerprints are formed in vitro - their creation, topology, and cross-section. It includes detail on the many ways that a print can be deposited, as well as the different substrates and surfaces they can be deposited on, and the types of distortion that each of these can cause. This book is not light reading, but if you are truly interested in learning more about how fingerprints work, and how analysts can identify them, then you should have no trouble enjoying this book.
If I were to point out only one flaw, it would be that Ashbaugh's agenda is too much in the fore. I would rather read about how fingerprints are analyzed than hear propaganda backing up the field as a legitimate science. His analysis in and of itself is adequate to illustrate the scientific principles underlying latent print analysis. It would have been more interesting for him to mention some of the reasons people believe that it is -not- a legitimate science, and refute those through simply through the precision of his text.

Riessman's Narrative Analysis is an excellent tool for those beginning research using narratives as the primary source of data and/or conducting ethnographic inquiry. Written in clear, accessible language the text introduces readers to the advantages of using narratives in research, the current debates in use of narratives, and the various perspectives on narrative inquiry. More than anything, the text provides an overview of current paradigms and schools of thought.
Though many additions have been made to the area of inquiry since the book was written in 1993, it nonetheless provides a great introduction to the use of narrative in research and the reading of texts based on narratives.
Further, Riessman is not afraid to cross disciplinary boundaries. Weaving together semiotics, feminist theory, post positivist schools of thought, hermeneutics, anthropology, and sociology, she provides a basic framework that, if not exhaustive, at least gives a picture of the current state-of-the-art. The references section alone is worth the cost of the book!

Narrative Analysis by Catherine Kohler Riessman presents the reader with a strong rationale for conducting qualitative research in the humanities from the perspective of the personal experience narrative. Notions of re-presenting to a reader or audience from personal lived experience in order to make meaning from that experience is a theme often stated in this monograph. Vivid examples are given throughout the text, making the theoretical come alive for the reader. Not only is the book written in a friendly style, but the examples yield practicality for a researcher as well. I have used the methodology that Riessman describes for several years with significant success.
