Just Buy It........2007-09-18
To put it shortly, if you're an organic chemistry graduate student the just go ahead and buy this book. It will be the most used book in your personal library. Also, if you are an undergraduate working in a research lab buy it as well. You'll have a huge jump on the other graduate students when you go to grad school having been familiar with this book.
An invaluable reference source of organic chemistry.......2007-09-06
The Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis is constitute the largest group of organic compounds and are becoming ever more important in all aspects of strategic applications in mechanic of action organic synthesis in detail.hence,I read repeatly.I promoted to the organic chemistry from this text book.
Epic of reaction mechanism.......2007-05-10
This book is like an epic of reaction mechanism. When I read the book for the first time, I was tried to think about the mechanisms only but gradually I realized that application of these name reactions are more important than to remember. Real life mechanism applications are hard, but I am sure, if anybody can remember some of them that they referenced in the book will be great. So in one word, this book is awesome book that I ever read for reaction mechanism.
Necessary Named Reactions reference.......2007-05-05
This is the best named reactions book currently available to the organic chemist. Mechanistic detail is quite thorough, and i hope a second edition comes out in a few more years.
Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis.......2006-11-10
I just want to say that I'm really satisfied with the conditions of the book, the time that it took from the purchase until it arrives is acceptable. I'm going to start buying more from Amazon.com. I'm really happy with the service.
The book is very good. It gives a broad view of the reactions and then specific examples where these reactions were applied with the references.
Book Description
Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. The treatment emphasizes unifying principles, showing how common mechanisms link seemingly disparate reactions. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set.
The author has drawn on his own research and the current literature to ensure that appropriate attention is given to topics across the range of modern organic chemistry. The text is unique in its inclusion of a chapter on reactions mediated or catalyzed by transition metals, an area in which mechanistic understanding is now essential. Relatively new topics such as olefin metathesis and cycloaromatization are covered without giving short shrift to more traditional areas such as carbonyl chemistry. The text assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry. It can be used either in a formal course or by students working on their own, and will be particularly useful for graduate students studying for qualifying examinations. It will also be useful to students and researchers in biochemistry, pharmacology, and inorganic chemistry.
"This is an excellent and well-presented work.... The author ... has succeeded well in treating the central ideas of reactivity and selectivity in an integrated whole. The clear style of writing, the well chosen examples, and the ... concise summaries of the main points provided at the end of each chapter should enable the reader to easily consolidate what has been learned.... The book is indeed a little work of art."
-- Jens Hartung, Angewandte Chemie International Edition
"I have taught a one-credit course with this book for three years, and, uniformly, the students have rated this book highly for its clarity and for the scope of the problems. ... This book does an excellent job at its stated goal: 'to teach students to come up with reasonable mechanisms for reactions they have never seen before.'"
-- Amy Howell, Synthesis
"I have just finished my first year of graduate studies in organic chemistry at Duke University. I just wanted to let you know how much your book got me through the past year of course work.... When it came to mechanisms, I found the clarity and thoroughness I needed only in your book. It was impressive how you were able to present so much information in a clear and comprehensive manner yet keep the book so manageable in size. In addition to the text, I also was able to benefit from the problems.... Great practice!! The on-line answers are much better than looking up answers by reference.... I am reading it again this summer in preparation for my preliminary exam next spring."
-- David Gooden

basics for organic chemist.......2007-05-10
This book is excellent for reaction mechanism. This book is helpful for the undergraduate's organic chem 2 and the grad school's reaction mechanism class. I learned how to move the electron in reasonable way. So in one word, this book is awesome book that I ever read for practicing reaction mechanism.
Excellent Book on Mechanisms.......2006-11-04
I bought this book to practice mechanisms because I'll be taking a physical organic class in the spring that uses them heavily. I used this book instead of sitting in on a sophomore organic class, because by job as a TA conflicted.
Anyway, this book is extraordinary. Dr. Grossman has taught me so many things about how to write a correct mechanism and how to recognize a bad mechanism when I see one. The book is written in a very clear and friendly manner and it's really quite hard to put down when you start reading it.
The book also has practice problems and the book's website has the answers, giving even more incentive to practice mechanisms.
Money well spent........2006-03-21
This compact but content-rich book is ideal for students who have completed at least their first year of organic chemistry (some physical chemistry is helpful but not critical) and wish to improve their understanding of the subject. The writing style is generally remarkably clear and readable; the author manages to make an inherently intimidating subject surprisingly easy to approach and understand.
I would recommend it to any student of chemistry, regardless of whether it fits into your scheduled courses.
Orgo Made Easy!.......2005-09-30
This book is a condensed version of my text book. With this book, GOD and "Orgo for dummies", I aced Organic the first time through.
Surprisingly Easy to Read and Understand.......2005-09-04
Being a PhD student in organic chemistry, I have read a lot of chemistry books in my days, and never have I come across a book that's understandable without a teacher's explanation. The numerous examples and pictures makes understanding what the author is writing about a breeze. I would highly suggest this book to anyone who is looking into pursuing a degree in Chemistry. It has already helped me out a great deal and I'm barely half way through!

The book arrived on time and in the condition indicated. Pleasure to do business with.
eh.......2007-08-31
i always thought this book was overrated. it's just not a text you can sit down, relax, and enjoy. it's definitely a reference text, and for a reference text, it's definitely not the first one I go to.
6th March is an excellent buy.......2007-08-08
It is very difficult to rewrite reviews for 6th edition of the "March". Classical flagships among textbooks and reference books in organic chemistry, unbeatable. With 7000 new refernces it brings unbelievable 25k reference citations, very well organized on the bottom of the pages. Excellent indexes, very good cross view between 5th edition and 6th edition aligning chapters of different numbering, perfect drawings made in CamSoft ChemDraw, etc. etc. As the text and accompanying material is polished and polished edition to edition, it is very difficult to do anything else but to praise this excellent reference book, which hardly could be omitted in any chemical laboratory. Not only that but hardcover book of 2357 pages for $73 at Amazon is not only a good book but also a good buy.
very fast shipping and very good conditions of the book.......2007-05-13
very fast shipping and very good conditions of the book
Good oganic chemistry.......2007-03-22
As for the 5th edition this new one is really clear and fully of bibliografic reference. I really appreciate that, now, the references are below at the page and not at the end of the chapter, form me this change help to finding the information. I think that this is one of the most complete book for the organic chemist.

Customer Reviews:
Nice book, for sure.......2006-11-06
I'm pretty sure that you _must_ have this book if you are studying advanced organic chemistry. Maybe it's not the best one to use as a study guide, but it's extremely helpful as a reference book both for undergrads and graduate students. However, one can argue that this edition is a bit out-of-date.
The Best Reference for Organic Chemistry.......2005-10-09
This is by far the best text I have found. Although it is considered a text book, it is more handy as a reference tool. I have seen no other book that contains more information than March's. This book is actually worth the price.
An investment that'll last you for years........2004-09-04
I bought a copy of this text (2nd Ed) after finishing my sophomore year of college, and it proved to be the best single investment I've ever made in chemistry. I used it so often, I had to duct-tape the book together.
I think the happiest moment of my career was when my name appeared in the index of a later edition. Anyway, buy it and treasure it.
The Green Bible of Organic Chemistry.......2004-08-15
March never leaves my desk. It covers everything. From functional group transformations to mechanisms to FMO theory - you name it it's there. Highly recommended for any advanced undergraduate, graduate or post-doctoral researcher. It's a bookshelf staple that any organic chemist should have available.
1495 Page Bible Of General Reactions And Mechanisms.......2004-02-09
I paid more for my 4th ed. new, and find it to be worth even more. It is not a cookbook per se, but it is a very comprehensive textbook that details general reactions by functional group. It outlines every way known to remove, add to, or otherwise modify every functional group. There is as much commentary as is needed, if not more, and every pathway is mentioned regardless of how exotic or primitive and low-yielding. The corresponding OS synth refs for specific cpds. are given for each type of reaction, along with a total of 15,000 other refs in footnotes. This was cutting-edge in 92, with much updating of the 3rd ed. The index will take you to the section that shows how to make the manipulations you want - if it doesn't, it probably can't be done.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent undergraduate introduction!.......1999-02-23
Laidler's is a superb introduction to the general field of chemical kinetics. The subject is well presented and clearly explained - the best text on the subject that I've found.
Book Description
This new edition of CHEMISTRY: PRINCIPLES AND REACTIONS continues to provide students with the "core" material essential to understanding the principles of general chemistry. Masterton and Hurley cover the basics without sacrificing the essentials, appealing to several markets. Appropriate for either a one- or two-semester course, CHEMISTRY: PRINCIPLES AND REACTIONS, Fifth Edition is three hundred pages shorter than most general chemistry texts and lives up to its long-standing reputation as THE student-oriented text. Though this text is shorter in length than most other General Chemistry books, it is not lower in level and with the addition of the large volume of content provided by the revolutionary GENERAL CHEMISTRY INTERACTIVE 3.0 CD-ROM that is included with every copy, it has a depth and breadth rivaling much longer books.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely terrible.......2004-04-27
Although this book may be useful as a reference, it is a disaster if you are new to chemistry and don't have a professor, who could explain some topics from this book.
In order to understand the book's problems you have to buy separately a solution manual.
So-so.......2002-08-27
A bit too complicated for a General Chemistry text, yet it still fails to touch on certain important aspects (steric numbers, among others). The practice problems at the end of each chapter are highly abstract, but may be viewed as somewhat useful when compared to the extremely wordy and complicated study guide. College students studying Chemistry for the first time, especially older non-traditional students, will find the authors' approach to several concepts to be unnecessarily complex. This text is far more useful when accompanied by a study guide such as Houk's Chemistry: Concepts and Problems, A Self-Teaching Guide. The text's study guide is fairly useless unless the instructor pulls tests from the publisher's web suite.
A nice read.......2002-01-18
I used this book for AP chem. I know one of the reviewers claims that it doesn't prepare you for the test. I think though, that it covers all the information you'll need to get a five on the AP, as I used this book, and I got a five. Perhaps, the practice problems aren't exactly AP chem test type problems. Therefore, to study for the actual test, go find a practice AP chem book like Barrons. They give you myriad practice problems. This book though, explains chemistry, not just how to do problems. Some people think that its over simplified. I think that its just written well and doesn't over complicate matters. Everything you need to know for a first year non calculus based chemistry course is in this book...and its accessible. The language is clear and concise. The sample problems are very useful because they cover basic problem solving techniques. I also enjoyed the little notes in the margins, they're kinda funny (this refers to the third edition). Anyway, if you want a general chem book that is not too complicated but still covers alot of material, this one's for you!
Good text book.......2001-07-08
I am a UCONN student, where Prof. Masterton and Prof. Hurley are my chemistry teachers. I have to say that this book is very well written, and interesting to read. It explains the priciple in clear and easy to understand fassion, not wordy, not repetitive. The exercises are step by step, and get to the point. The author often makes connection between chemistry and our everyday life. For example, he will expain that sea water is a bit slipery because it's slightly basic. There are some comments that this book is too simple, and not at college level. Well, I'm taking general chemistry course here, with this textbook, and this course is one of the hardest course at UCONN. We judge a book by it's content, not by it's thickness or how pretty the title page is. There are not too many organic stuff here, but most people who is major in chemistry related fields go on to take Organic Chemistry, at here this is the way it is here. This book is supposed to be General introduction to chemistry. And you can certainly get a lot out of it.
Absolute Filth.......2001-02-05
Absolute filth!! I am a student in AP Chemistry and this was the title for our text, until we used the masterpiece written by Steven Zumdahl. This does not prepare one well for any chemistry class, is poorly written, not up to par with our technology today, is written in a very unorganized and in a tengential manner, and, well...absolute filth!

Book Description
The features of this book which will be of special interest to academic organic chemists are the introduction (Chapter 1), which presents a short course on the concepts and language of heterogeneous catalysis, covers organic reaction mechanisms of hydrogenation (Chapter 2), hydrogenolysis (Chapter 4), and oxidation (Chapter 6), a presents problems and solutions specific for running heterogeneous catalytic organic reactions in solution. These materials can supplement advanced chemistry courses.
Most synthetic organic chemists use a variety of "protecting groups" which they attach to functional groups (reactive groups of atoms) while some reaction is being conducted on another part of the molecule. These protecting groups prevent reactions of the functional groups during other reactions and are removed later by a heterogeneous catalytic method called hydrogenolysis. One unique feature of this book, not found in other books on catalysis, is an exhaustive chapter (Chapter 4) on hydrogenolysis, which is dredged from the recent synthetic literature published by modern organic chemists. Academic organic chemists should find this chapter extremely useful and may wish to adopt the book as a supplement for advanced organic chemistry courses designed for seniors and for graduate students. It will also be useful for professors and their research groups engaged in synthetic organic chemistry.
Many academic organic chemists are not aware of recent advances in heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis (Chapter 3) or in selective low temperature, liquid phase heterogeneous catalytic oxidations by hydrogen peroxide (Chapter 6). These specialty topics are timely and may be new to academic organic chemists and can be used to supplement their advanced courses.
Several features of this book will also be of special interest to industrial chemists who are unfamiliar with heterogeneous catalysis. Many good organic chemists are hire by industry. They synthesize a new compound using standard organic synthetic techniques but are informed by their supervisor that they must convert some of their synthetic steps into heterogeneous catalytic steps. They may not have been exposed to heterogeneous catalysis and have few places to turn. This book offers them a crash course in heterogeneous catalysis as well as many examples of reactions and conditions with which they can start their search.
Those industrial organic chemists already familiar with heterogeneous catalysis will find this book useful as a reference to many examples in the recent literature. They will find recent surface science discoveries correlated with heterogeneous catalysis or organic reactions and mechanistic suggestions designed to stimulate innovative nontraditional thinking about organic reactions on surfaces.
Key Features
* Written by organic chemists for organic chemists
* Introduces heterogeneous catalysis concepts and language
* Presents a comprehensive compilation of protecting group removal procedures
* Covers liquid-phase hydrogenations, hydrogenolysis, and oxidations
* Addresses heterogeneous methods for producing pure enantiomers of chiral products
* Examines the emerging field of heterogenized homogeneous catalysts
* Mixes practical applications with mechanistic interpretations

Heterogeneous Hydrogenation Made Accesible.......2000-04-08
For the advanced organic chemistry researcher who is entering the wonderful world of heterogeneous catalysis in general - and heterogeneous hydrogenation in particular - there is no single resource such as this to guide him. Working in the field of heterogeneous hydrogenation myself, I had felt that a modern, up-to-date, readable text was long overdue. Heterogeneous Catalysis in Organic Chemistry has all of these attributes and much much more. It will help you o brave chemist to safely navigate the enormous and often useless primary literature and reach what you were looking for. Be that experimental details for a particular transformation, current developments in the scope of the field, understanding of the underlying theory. I strongly reccomend all organic synthesis research departments obtain a copy. It will be invaluable for the whole range of staff, from the first year inexperienced graduate student nervously exploring the field, to the research group leader who wants to update his knowledge and understanding, painlesly, accurately and quickly.

Illustrates the organic mechanism associated with each enzyme-catalyzed reaction
Makes the connection between organic reaction mechanisms and enzyme mechanisms
Compiles the latest information about molecular mechanisms of enzyme reactions
Accompanied by clearly drawn structures, schemes, and figures
Includes an extensive bibliography on enzyme mechanisms covering the last 30 years
Explains how enzymes can accelerate the rates of chemical reactions with high specificity
Provides approaches to the design of inhibitors of enzyme-catalyzed reactions
Categorizes the cofactors that are appropriate for catalyzing different classes of reactions
Shows how chemical enzyme models are used for mechanistic studies
Describes catalytic antibody design and mechanism
Includes problem sets and solutions for each chapter
Written in an informal and didactic style
Customer Reviews:
A lot of problems will be solved in later revisions.......2003-05-05
The index for this book .... For example, there are a fair number of examples of the epoxidation reaction, but not a single pointer toward that in the index of the book. And much the same thing for other types of reactions.
It would also be nice if there was a more clear transfer between basic organic principles and then biological applications.
He does do a good job showing this is some cases (i.e., the benzoin condensation), but a few more parallel examples would have been very useful.
Professor Silverman does it again!.......2000-06-17
This book is an excellent resource for undergraduate and graduate students studying enzyme chemistry and organic mechanisms. Prof. Silverman does a fine job of giving many different examples of enzyme mechanisms. By not focusing totally on one kind of enzyme or catalysis, he succeeds in painting a broad picture for the reader, while not sacrificing content. The only drawback to this edition is the large amount of typographical errors that appear throughout. Perhaps better editing is in order for future editions.
Book Description
Written in a straightforward manner, this laboratory manual for a two-semester organic chemistry course provides only the essential background material, laboratory set-ups, and procedures for each exercise. The exercises have been carefully written to minimize set-up time and eliminate the need for elaborate and expensive laboratory equipment. Laboratory techniques are emphasized rather than theoretical understanding.

Organic Chem Lab Manual.......2006-11-10
Perfect/new condition with VERY fast shipping. Cheapest price I could find, and was significantly cheaper than elsewhere. I had the first lab, and ordered the manual that night assuming that it would not arrive before my next lab, but it did! I was very pleasantly surprised. Thanks!
an inexpensive yet effective lab book for undergraduate orga.......1998-05-28
An inexpensive, yet effective lab manual for undergraduate organic chemistry. The students do not have to buy a hard cover text, full of colors. The reagents used are cheap and, generally, available at low cost. There is great variety of experiments- some are standard syntheses, some are kinetcis, but above all there is a great qualitative analysis chapter. The techniques illustrated in the first few chapters are essential in running high yield syntheses. An excellent set of appendices with subjects like % yield, how to make solutions and how to balance a redox equation. This is a book where one learns how to do expts. without necessarily running a very expensive lab.

excelent book for biomedical research purpose.......2006-03-09
Great help at the bench work, from theoretical to practical points
An exceptional book by an exceptional scientist!.......2005-08-27
As a Biochemistry graduate student, I am constantly on the lookout for books which could help me in my research. When this particular book came out, I didn't have second thoughts in purchasing it and my decision was amply rewarded. I am greatly impressed by the way Dr. Hafiz Ahmed presented his work. The principles/theories are outlined followed by the step-by-step experimental procedures which are easy to follow. As I read the contents of each page, I couldn't help but feel that the author conceptualized the book in such a way that the end-user won't have any difficulty in conducting his research since each topic has a detailed description. This book is a valuable investment that every student/biochemist will be proud of.
