Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging: Inside Out (Biomedical Engineering)
ASIN: 0824740963 |
Book Description
Ultrasound imaging is one of the most important and widely used diagnostic tools in modern medicine, second only to the conventional x-ray. Although considered a mature field, research continues for improving the capabilities and finding new uses for ultrasound technology while driving down the cost of newer, more complicated procedures such as intravascular ultrasound. Diagnostic Ultrasound: Imaging and Blood Flow Measurements presents new developments, fundamental physics, instrumentation, system architecture, biological effects of ultrasound, and clinical applications that reflect this initiative. Keeping mathematical derivations to a minimum, this book begins with an overview of the field, the strengths and weaknesses of the technology, and its role relative to other imaging modalities. The book proceeds to describe the fundamental physics involved, a detailed examination of the transducer, conventional imaging approaches, and Doppler measurements. The following chapters explore new developments such as flow, displacement, contrast, harmonic, intracavity, and 4-D imaging. The author concludes by reviewing current status and standards on bioeffects along with a unique chapter on measuring ultrasonic properties of tissues that can be found nowhere else. Emphasizing the engineering and signal processing aspects of ultrasound technology rather than taking a clinical perspective, Diagnostic Ultrasound: Imaging and Blood Flow Measurements encourages and enables further advances in this established yet dynamic field.

Femtochemistry and Femtobiology: Ultrafast Events in Molecular Science
ASIN: 352730259X |
Book Description
For decades now, chemists have been dreaming of observing exactly what happens at the molecular level during a chemical reaction. The breakthrough came at the end of the 80s with the development of special spectrometers that use extremely short-pulsed laser light and so enable measurements in the femtosecond range. Since then, "femtochemistry" has made rapid progress, due to intensive collaboration between physical chemists, spectroscopists, photochemists and physicists.
The first-class contributions collected here from top international femtochemists provide a comprehensive insight into this area of interdisciplinary research. The range extends from femtochemistry in nanohollows to the investigation of the dynamics of biological reactions in the femtosecond range, from ab initio approaches to quantum chemical reaction controls to two-dimensional, nonlinear optical spectroscopy in liquids. This overview of the current level of research is rounded off with A. Zewail's Nobel prizewinning lecture. The vast amount of information and numerous references make this not only an ideal introduction to the research, but also recommended reading for everyone concerned with this hot topic.

Customer Reviews:
Bible on Laser Diagnostics for Graduate and Undergraduate Students .......2005-08-22
I consider this book as Bible for graduate and undergraduate students just starting out a project on Laser Diagnostics in Combustion. This book provides a very comprehensive and in-depth review on most of the common laser-based diagnostics techniques. Even though lot of improvements and new findings on the common laser-diagnostics methods are made since the book is published, this doesn't change the fact that one needs to understand the basics before appreciating the improvements. It is true that this book doesn't provide a very thorough review on Polarization Spectroscopy or Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing, but if you look around and see what people are applying in most of the applications relevant to the design and characterization of combustors you will find that the diagnostic techniques covered in this book are in the forefront of applications.
If you are reading this then you know this is a good book.......2005-07-20
Chances are, you have searched for this book because of the numerous times its been referenced and the numerous times its been recommended to you by others. It is inarguably the definitive book on laser diagnostics for combustion. Of course, that doesnt really say much because how many books are there on such a topic? Nevertheless, it is an excellent book to give one an understanding of all the diagnostics that are available to the combustion scientist. It goes into all the gory math and physics of the techniques, but that is to be expected since all the diagnostics rely heavily on their modern physics backgrounds. Sometimes it can be extremely overwhelming to someone just wishing to use the diagnostic and not develop them, so it is not a practical book in that regard. However, when it comes time to understanding why a particular technique works the way it does, then the book serves well. Unfortunately, this book will make most sense to someone with a strong (and I mean a masters in modern physics) background in physics and most users of the book probably dont have that. One does wish that a similar book existed which outlined the techniques as used in practice. But alas, Eckbreth's is the only one out there and hence has all the details. It is not a standalone book, you must still sufficiently read other journal papers on the individual techniques. But it is not a neanderthal book and will remain to be referenced by many in those very journal papers even after other books on the topic have been written.
Outdated (neanderthal) and burdensome.......2003-01-02
The book appears to have been written by an individual who has not practiced in the field in more that 20 years. The material is hopelessly outdated - neanderthal is a word that comes to mind. The style is also somewhat overbearing and cumbersome. I would not recommend this book to anyone, anywhere. They would be better served by reading well written, current papers on the subject.
Book for all needs.......2001-03-16
I find this book to be filled with excellent explanations of fundamentals and practical information. It has been a great reference book during graduate school and beyond. I have been able to apply its content not only in the area of flame diagnostics but other investigations as well.

It is addressed to graduate students in physics and chemistry as well as scientists just entering this field on research.
Customer Reviews:
A complete treatise of lasers and related subjects.......2006-04-30
The 3rd edition of this comprehensive book is revised, updated and extended. W. Demtr?der covers almost everything about laser spectroscopy in this voluminous masterpiece.
The book starts with basics of lasers, optical aspects of lasers. There is a large chapter allotted for laser instrumentation, for those who want to learn about the technical features. A lot of informative discussions are given in regards to generation and manipulation of lasers. Recent advances and innovations are also mentioned. A large bibliography accompanies the book, for those who want to delve into further details.
Diagrams are very useful in general. Not all mathematical derivations were given explicitly. The reader is assumed to have some fundamental knowledge of modern physics, optics and lasers. If you follow the book from the beginning to end, you will see that the subjects are built upon preceding sections, which is pedagogically useful.
This book is recommended to those who want to gain a general, comprehensive and profound comprehension of laser spectroscopy. For more detailed and focused topics, one needs to consult more specialized books.
Overall, this is an essential and high-quality book.
Good reference book.......2004-02-18
This is a very complete introduction book to laser spectroscopy. The thing I like best about this book is clarity. The author lays down basic principles of a set-up in one or two pages, supplemented with illustrations. First 5 chapters are about instruments. Then it is followed by 9 chapters of introduction of different types of laser spectroscopy. The last chapter contains several real-life applications of spectroscopy.
The difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is small. I think only about 10-15 sections are changed. Very few changes in the first 12 chapters. Among the new stuffs, CRDS and frequency combing seem interesting. I skipped the update on the last chapter. I think there is no need to buy the new edition if your cash supply is limited.
Good reference book on spectroscopy.......2001-02-14
This book contains most of the optical spectroscopic methods currently used. A highly recommended book for anyone who wants an introduction to research level spectroscopic methods.
great book.......1999-12-06
It is a great book that I read until now about Laser Spectroscopy. It is a most useful book for me in my education and researchs .

Book Description
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a ground breaking medical technique which uses lasers to activate light-sensitive chemicals to treat cancer and other diseases without resorting to surgery. For the first time, Chemical Aspects of Photodynamic Therapy introduces in an accessible way the physics, chemistry and biology behind the technique. This highly authoritative account of the account of the rapidly developing field of PDT explores its chemical basis, while presenting information in its historical context. Haematoporphyrin derivative is considered in detail, together with the new 'second generation' photosensitisers , such as chlorins, bacteriochlorins and phthalocyanines. Photosensitisers which are currently in clinical trials are compared and reference is made to new light sources, biological and clinical findings, and prospects for future developments. This book is essential reading for new students and researchers alike studying PDT. It is recommended particularly for photochemists, as well as photobiologists and clinicians. About the author Raymond Bonnett was born in London in 1931. After a spell in the air force, he graduated from Imperial College, going on to Cambridge to research under Alexander Todd and A.W. Johnson and then to Harvard to work with R.B. Woodward. He is now Scotia Research Professor of Chemistry at Queen Mary and Wesfield College, University of London, UK. He has been active in research on photosensitisers for 25 years and has published over 200 papers on the chemistry of porphyrins and related compounds.
