I had been searching through all of the sewing books I could find to learn more about the nature of fabric and fibers...and everything I could possibly want to know was here, and more. Absolutely fascinating. It is a textbook, but was written clearly enough that anyone with an interest in the area can easily understand it. I've been teaching classes to costumers and members of the local American Sewing Guild, who are equally impressed with the knowledge we got from this book.

I use this book as the text for teaching a basic textiles course for sophmores. This text provides a sound foundation for students understanding the textiles and the science foundations that are the base for predicting textile performance. As a non- engineer, but fully engaged in the Injection Molding business as a recruiter of Plastic Part Design Engineers, this book delivers technical information but easy to read and comprehend. Not just a book on theory, but practical applications. I recommend for non-engineers and engineers.

Essential for the metal clay artist.......2007-09-25

Sherri divides her book into two parts; an excellent way to present metal clay to those who are not experienced with it. In the first part, "Metal Clay Essentials," she carefully explains how to work with metal clay, emphasizing the need to keep the clay moist because the tiny amount of binder in metal clay evaporates quickly. She recommends the use of Badger Balm® or olive oil on your hands to help in maintaining metal clay's moisture.

Her excellent firing chart shows temperatures and times required in the kiln for the two main metal clay brands, Precious Metal Clay® (PMC) and Art Clay®, the various types of clay they offer, and the amount of shrinkage to be expected. Another chart shows the strength of the clay after it is fired. Some artists may shy away from metal clay, worrying about its cost, but Sherri assures that every scrap and dust particle can be re-hydrated or be used to make slip.

The book's second part, "Metal Clay Techniques," has really fun projects to copy or to inspire. A beaded bracelet has metal clay charms shaped like peas-in-a-pod, a strawberry, a ladybug, a pumpkin, and a flower. Sherri shows how to use cork clay or a drinking straw over which to form beads. When fired, the cork clay or straw burns away, leaving only the precious metal. My favorite project is an artichoke bead made from metal clay formed over teardrop-shaped pieces of cork clay. The basic book is a handy reference tool after taking a class but if you can't take a class for some reason, for $3.00 more, an instructional DVD is included.

This is a really good book to get you started on the Art of Metal Clay. I'm very impressed with its contents and thank the artist for being so detailed and sharing so much information. Because of this I feel confident to proceed with this craft. Haab includes much text and good photos explaining the process to achieve numerous results. From product info, how to make molds, texturing,kiln time and alternatives,incorporating resins and polymer clay, she covers it all and does a good job. Also keeps in mind the beginning artist and the cost factor offering suggestions to curb the expense while still achieving great results. This is a book worth its weight and a good resource to work from.

This text is perfect for the reader who can read graphs and diagrams. A picture is worth a thousand words and so are graphs and diagrams. Problems at the end of each Chapter provide the reader with the opportunity to apply what has been learned to practice. The book is divided into four parts. After an introduction in Chapter 1, where the necessary concepts from a first course on polymers are summarized, the conformations of single polymer chains are treated in Part 1. Part 2 deals with the thermodynamics of polymer solutions and melts, including the conformations of chains in those states. Part 3 applies the concepts of Part 2 to the formation and properties of polymer networks. Finally, Part 4 explains the essential aspects of how polymers move in both melt and solution states. In all cases, attention is restricted to concepts that are firmly entrenched in the field.

As a polymer physicist, among other things (mechanical engineer/tribologist) I can tell you that this is must for anybody trying to understand polymer physics. Whether you are a scientist or worked in applied sciences (engineering) this will make a great text book and reference.

Detailed but Still Clear.......2007-01-09

I am a Chemist working on applied R&D in the oil refining industry. I bought this text as I needed a good understanding on polymer containing fluids (viscosity, solutions behavior). It is very well written and quite detailed. It is not the sort of text that tries to introduce excessive and not useful mathematical details but is anyway very accurate. I advice it also for professionals

This book is very straightforward reading with nice intuitive ways of thinking about polymer behavior. I used it during an intro grad school class and still refer back to it first when I'm thinking about polymers. It has just the right mixture of explanation and equation for anyone with a background in Calculus and a little bit of experience with statistical mechanics (really... just a little bit). A great book.
