Book Description
After dropping a bombshell that was a bestseller, Lilian Jackson Braun brings back James Qwilleran and his famous felines, Koko and Yum Yum, for the twenty-ninth installment of the beloved, bestselling Cat Who . . . series.
Moose County, 400 miles north of everywhere, is in an uproar (good and bad) following vast inheritances from wealthy old families. Only "Cool Koko" knows what's happening . . . and he's not telling. Jim Qwilleran thinks it's because he has more whiskers than ordinary cats, but who's counting?
Meanwhile . . .
Koko meets a piano tuner.
Polly goes to Paris.
Qwill writes a play (an absurdist play titled The Cat Who Got Elected Dog Catcher).
And there's a mysterious death from a bee sting . . .
Customer Reviews:
Good book, but...(BIG-TIME SPOILER ALERT!).......2007-10-01
I picked up this book, and was so shocked at the barn-burning at the end that I had to read it again. And indeed, I had read that Qwill's barn got burned!! (don't you dare say I didn't warn you!!)
BTW, to those of you that say this book is disjointed: I just took the opportunity to read The Cat Who Read Backwards, and that was disjointed too. I think the entire series has a disjointed feel to it, but that's because while Miss Braun likes to make a whole series, she has to make self-contained books for those of us who are disjointed readers (i.e. those of us who read most of the books out of order).
Can y'all tell that my heart's in Polk County, North Carolina?? She is indubitably my favorite writer still living. She creates the most delightful mystery novels, better than Grafton, better than anyone else save for the dearly departed Virginia Lanier.
BJ Wanlund (aka "The Red-Haired sort-of Qwill")
What did I just finish reading?.......2007-09-30
I am saddened and perplexed. What was this book about? Where did it all go? It consisted of odd paragraphs, vaguely connected. Did Qwill's barn burn down? I think it did, but when did he go over to check it out? Did he and Polly break up? She sent him an unfeeling, unbelievably strange letter, given the long-term relationship they had. He took it as a "Dear John" letter but never reacted, on any realistic level. Wow! Please, ghostwriter of this series, whoever you are, put it to bed! Thank goodness I took this thing out at my local library. Had I bought it, I would be very annoyed, right now. Why did Qwill make almost identical entries into his journal, a few days apart? This pattern of repeated paragraphs in the last few books leads me to believe that the ghostwriter is simply "phoning it in," and whatever is sent is printed, without any editor taking any part in the process, whatsoever. Amazing!
Ruined the whole series.......2007-09-09
I have read the series several times, and also have them all as audio books. Over the years I enjoyed re-reading (and listening to) the series once every year or two. After getting this book I doubt I'll ever read or listen to any of them again. In the back of my mind I'll always know what the characters turned out to be, and don't much care about them any more. I believe LJB is still authoring the books, but is dictating and not writing them. The publisher should be ashamed not to have pulled the plug several books ago when her talent faded. The previous book was awful, but this one is so bad it ruined the whole series.
Insult to Cat Who readers.......2007-09-03
This book was like a slap in the face for loyal "Cat Who" readers. I've read and re-read every one of the series, as well as listened to audio versions. This final book was not just a disappointment, it was insulting. Whoever wrote this one obviously never read the previous ones. Nothing makes sense; the characters aren't true to their previous incarnations. There is no warmth, no heart. The publisher made a lot of money from loyal readers. We deserve a better ending. I think they owe us another final "Cat Who."
Do Not Read This Book!.......2007-09-02
Having read all the previous Cat Who... books, I have, as have many readers, noticed a decline in their quality. While the early works are very good stories, this last installment is beyond disappointing. The style is disjointed and the timeline is unclear, and there is virtually no plot. Clearly this was ghost written by someone who has never read the series. Please encourage the publisher to end the series.
Customer Reviews:
Twisted Whiskers.......2006-08-15
Excellent and entertaining book on understanding, enjoying, and modifying the behavior of our furry little (or big) feline friends.
Great.......2006-07-01
This book will help you know your cat better than you ever thought possible. It's a fast reading and provides lots of ideas about how to manage problems with your cat. Required reading for everyone who lives with a kitty.
Interesting, but a bit Holistic for my taste.......2005-10-08
While there's nothing wrong with Holistic approaches to dealing with problems in people or cats, this book falls into the category of those that tend to advocate one approach and not address others. While it is interesting and useful for the approaches it presents, it's only one side of the story, and only one set of approaches.
Pairing this book with "The Cat Who Cried for Help," which addresses other approaches, has been a great way of getting many pieces of a complex puzzle, but I still wish I could read my cats' minds.
Solve Cat Problems!.......2005-07-09
When you want to know why your cat does something, ASK! This author was recommended by my vet as I tried to solve weird behavior only a cat has! I found several solutions which will help as I enjoy a pet!
The most comprehensive feline behavior book I've read.......2005-06-05
How many times have I wished Dr. Dolittle could come visit me and just talk to my 16-year-old curmudgeon and have Rambo pass along what's got him yelling all night.....
"Twisted Whiskers" is the next best thing. Pam Johnson discusses a wide variety of feline behavior problems in cats' terms so we can form better human-feline cohabitation.
Her chapters on "Old Age" and "Depression" were indispensible in dealing with Rambo. In addition, Johnson talks about natural remedies rather than having us end up with a generation of doped-up furbabies. Johnson lists the Bach's Flower remedies and their appropriate applications and doseages for felines.
Excellent read! Highly recommended for new and old-time cat companions.

Book Description
A mysterious death in a Virginia farm town has the locals scratching their heads—while frisky feline Mrs. Murphy and her friends, fat-cat Pewter and corgi Tee Tucker, uncover clues as they curl their way around a cold-blooded killer.
This balmy summer in Crozet, Virginia, postmistress Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen has a lot to think about. Things have been pretty cozy between her and her ex-husband, Fair and her beloved old post office is in danger of being replaced with a modern building—and modern rules. Harry’s thoughtful contemplation is shattered the day she stumbles over a dead body near Potlicker Creek. Barry Monteith, the handsome local horse breeder, has been savagely murdered. A true ladies’ man, Barry was known to have left a string of broken hearts behind him. But could a spurned lover be responsible for his untimely demise?
The plot only thickens when an autopsy reveals that Barry was infected with rabies weeks before he was killed. As usual, Harry can’t resist doing a little digging—with Mrs. Murphy close by to warn of approaching danger. Harry makes a remarkable discovery in the creek—the class ring of Mary Pat Reines, a local woman who disappeared thirty years earlier along with her prized Thoroughbred stallion. Like Barry, Mary Pat was a successful horse breeder—and now all of Crozet is wondering if the two cases are linked. As the police struggle with the evidence, the pressure gets hotter than a June afternoon—especially when another person is found dead of less-than-natural causes. As usual, Mrs. Murphy and her crew are the first to sniff out the truth.
But if they don’t find a way to help Harry piece together the puzzle, she could become the killer’s next target—and even Mrs. Murphy’s slinkiest moves won’t be able to save her.

Whisker of Evil.......2006-11-23
For fans of Rita Mae Brown this is a great book. It continues the adventures of Mrs. Murphy and her many animal friends. I think this book even adds some animals we haven't heard from before. There are changes in Harry's personal and professional life of great interest to Harry's fans. There is the usual mystery. I wouldn't start the series with this book; however. Readers will want a little more background and should start with a book that was published earlier.
If you have to do a mundane chore.......2006-07-24
such as painting a room, or cleaning the kitchen, these books are entertaining as audio books. At the risk of sounding "snobbish" (which I am not) they are a cross between "Murder She Wrote" and Mr. Ed.
Awesome!!.......2006-03-08
This is one of two books Ive read in her series. I didnt know it was a series till recently. The other one I also saw as a movie and this one I heard on C.D. with my daughter. ( as well as reading them. )
I think Mrs. Brown and partner are fantastic when it comes to intruge. My daughter screams at me everytime we get into the car and I dont have the book playing. 9 disks go a long way and I think its great learning for a baby under one to be read to as much as possible.
There are so many factions to this book and so many things come "to light" as a tie in to the other book that Ive read so I didnt have a problem keeping up with it all even though the two books are so spaced apart ( 3 years by the book standards) and about 4 or 5 since I read the last one.
I plan to get them all now that I know Mrs. Murphy has her own series of books. My daughter and I will become greater fans together when we read/hear her books at bed time!
This is an enjoyable entry in this wonderful series!.......2006-01-30
I have been reading the Mrs. Murphy series and really enjoying it. The best part about these books is the characters and by now I feel that I know everyone. Ms. Brown knows how to characterize. In this book Harry is facing life-changing decisions, but while she's going through her own personal epiphany, there are murders occurring again in Crozet. This particualar murderer appears to be particularly evil, and Harry and her friends have trouble trying to find a motive. There's also an old crime that appears to be connected to the new ones, and the murderer doesn't appear to be able to stop killing so they are really in a rush to find himr or her. The book moves along quickly, and I also found out some good information on horse breeding and on the transference and symptoms of rabies infection at the same time. Great fun!
My Favorite Entry in the Series So Far.......2005-11-05
I really, really enjoyed this particular Mrs. Murphy mystery. As a horse person, I didn't find the detail about breeding and bloodlines to be tiresome. And the mystery itself was wonderfully wrought and believable. The relationships between the primary characters are developing nicely, too. Looking forward to continuing with the series.

Book Description
To celebrate Peter's birthday, Frederick Warne is publishing new editions of all 23 of Potter's original tales, which take the very first printings of Potter's works as their guide. The aim of these editions is to be as close as possible to Beatrix Potter's intentions while benefiting from modern printing and design techniques.
The colors and details of the watercolors in the volumes are reproduced more accurately than ever before, and it has now been possible to disguise damage that has affected the artwork over the years. Most notably, The Tale of Peter Rabbit restores six of Potter's original illustrations. Four were sacrificed in 1903 to make space for illustrated endpapers, and two have never been used before. Of course, Beatrix Potter created many memorable children's characters, including Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck and Jeremy Fisher. But whatever the tale, both children and adults alike can be delighted by the artistry in Potter's illustrations, while they also enjoy a very good read. Because they have always been completely true to a child's experience, Potter's 23 books continue to endure.
Customer Reviews:
Great cast of characters! Great use of language!.......2006-04-02
Beatrix Potter is my favorite children's author. Her use of language is incredible, and her story lines are just dark enough to be interesting, and not so dark that they are truly terrifying.
Samuel Whiskers is the story of how Tom Kitten is almost made into a pudding dumpling. Highlights include an argument between Samuel Whiskers and his wife, Anna Maria, on the proper way to make a pudding, and Tom Kitten who, at the height of his regret about climbing the chimney, finds delight in how he's sweeping the chimney with his clothes.
Those who are heavily PC may not appreciate Potter's references to snuff, and whipping, but for the rest of us, those references add real color and interest to the story.

Excellent Book on Cat Massage.......2006-03-03
Maryjean writes a complete nose-to-tail guide to massaging your cat. Its step-by-step instructions are just fantastic. It's a great way to socialize and enjoy your cat.
Great book!.......2002-05-22
I do a lot of cat rescue and adoption and find that even people who've had cats for years don't understand how to touch them so the cat will enjoy it. This book gives easy to follow instructions which can be used to improve anyone's relationship with his or her cat. Cats have an unfair reputation as being aloof. Hopefully this book will change that!
For those who have NEVER had a cat..........2002-05-14
I would only recommend this book to people who have never owned a cat until now. This book is basic common sense and really not worth the money spent if you have already owned cats for years. If you have, then you will find pretty much nothing new in this book.
I'm not buying this book again........2002-01-05
But that doesn't mean this isn't the top cat massage book on the market. Believe me, I have read them ALL and nothing could hold a leaf of catnip to this one. I said I wouldn't buy this book again because my dog had an accident on top of it and I had to throw it away, but since the techniques presented were so easy to follow and so nicely illustrated, I was able to retain the whole book in my head. I plan on buying a cat to go along with this book in due time.
MY CATS LOVE ME EVEN MORE!.......2000-06-01
This is a great book becasue it is a joy to follow, is illustrated to follow easily, and works! My four cats, Maui, Shima, Gumpy, and ChiChi, all love me more because of what this book has allowed me to do - how about a book on dogs - my new lab is feeling left out - GREAT book, if you have a cat - this is the message manual!

More suitable as fuel for your fireplace.......2005-08-02
Any reviewer who finds a smidgeon of merit in this crazy excuse for rational thought needs to have his own head examined. Bigots and fascists are always looking for some sort of intellectual basis for their beliefs and have for 70 or 80 years tried attempted to find it in Rosenberg's tortured and barren prose (along with Hitler's equally crazy "Mein Kampf"). Albert Speer, an intelligent and broadly educated man who was Hitler's architect, close associate, and armaments minister, declared the book "unreadable" (see "Inside the Third Reich," a vastly more worthwhile book). Anyone who wants to see what this kind of thinking, when adopted on a large scale, can ultimately lead to should watch "Schindler's List."
Race and Race Soul.......2002-09-20
To say Myth of The Twentieth Century is hard to find is a gross understatement. One can find Mein Kampf everywhere. This i believe is due to Mein Kampf's ponderous size, and general incomprehensibility. Myth is concise, readable, and the product of a truly brillant writer. The only man at nuremburg hanged for writing a book. I find it amusing that everyone that attacks Rosenberg's views reverts to ad hominium attacks, ie name calling. If you can find this book BUY IT, READ IT, APPLY IT. At least read it on line. Worth the time and effort and eye strain.
A cure for insomnia.......1999-07-08
A mixture of paganism and anticatholicism which unsuccessfully tries to prove the superiority of the Aryan race. Even Rosenberg's boss Hitler couldn't get through it, and never took Rosenberg very seriously. But if you want to fall asleep, just read a couple of pages.
Who is the author of the first review?.......1999-03-07
I have read the anonymous review of Rosenberg's pre-nazi book. Why is there no signature? This review obviously emanates from a neo-Nazi, since everybody serious knows that Rosenberg was the theorician of the Third Reich. Amazon must demand signatures from their reviewers. Bruno Chaouat, Assistant Professor of French, Berea College
The Alternative You Never Knew You Had.......1998-12-09
In this, his seminal work, Alfred Rosenberg offers the reader a genuine alternative to the political and spiritual attitudes which modern Western society leads us to believe are our only options. From every center of power today we are told that we MUST accept democracy as the only "good" form of government, that we MUST choose either the Judeo-Christian tradition, the New Age movement, or secular humanism as our faith, and that we MUST look to either Adam Smith or Karl Marx for economic wisdom. In "The Myth of the Twentieth Century," Rosenberg takes aim at all of these assumptions and presents us with a worldview entirely different from any of those based upon them--one with its roots deep in those primeval affective, aesthetic, and intellectual inclinations characteristic of the Caucasian race. He argues powerfully for an organic polity as opposed to a universalist one--most specifically in the Germany of his time--but more generally for Western Civilization as a whole. At the heart of his argument is the provocative thesis that each of the races of the human species possesses a different kind of "soul," which is the origin of human cultural diversity. Environmental influences cannot account for the differences in style and achievement among the races, he argues; the respective environmental conditions under which they have lived have been far too similar to admit of such an explanation. Advancements in the scientific understanding of genetics made since Rosenberg's death, moreover, lend weight to his thesis and make it well worth a thoughful look.
