    Book Description

A range of alternative mechanisms can usually be postulated for most organic chemical reactions, and identification of the most likely requires detailed investigation. Investigation of Organic Reactions and their Mechanisms will serve as a guide for the trained chemist who needs to characterise an organic chemical reaction and investigate its mechanism, but who is not an expert in physical organic chemistry.Such an investigation will lead to an understanding of which bonds are broken, which are made, and the order in which these processes happen. This information and knowledge of the associated kinetic and thermodynamic parameters are central to the development of safe, efficient, and profitable industrial chemical processes, and to extending the synthetic utility of new chemical reactions in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and academic environments.Written as a coherent account of the principal methods currently used in mechanistic investigations, at a level accessible to academic researchers and graduate chemists in industry, the book is highly practical in approach. The contributing authors, an international group of expert practitioners of the techniques covered, illustrate their contributions by examples from their own research and from the relevant wider chemical literature. The book covers basic aspects such as product analysis, kinetics, catalysis, and investigation of reactive intermediates. It also includes material on significant recent developments, e.g. computational chemistry, calorimetry, and electrochemistry, in addition to topics of high current industrial relevance, e.g. reactions in multiphase systems, and synthetically useful reactions involving free radicals and catalysis by organometallic compounds.

    Book Description

Clandestine lab operators are not the mad scientists whose genius keeps them pent up in the laboratory contemplating elaborate formulas and mixing exotic chemicals. In fact, their equipment is usually simple, their chemicals household products, and their education basic. Most of the time the elements at the scene are perfectly legal to sell and own. It is only in the combination of all these elements that the lab becomes the scene of a criminal operation. Forensic Investigation of Clandestine Laboratories guides you, step-by-step, through the process of recognizing these illegal manufacturing operations. Then it shows you how to prove it in the courtroom. In non-technical language this book details: How to recognize a clandestine lab How to process the site of a clandestine lab How to analyze evidence in the examination laboratory What to derive from the physical evidence How to present the evidence in court The identification and investigation of a clandestine lab, and the successful prosecution of the perpetrators, is a team effort. A collaboration of law enforcement, forensic experts, scientists, and criminal prosecutors is required to present a case that definitively demonstrates how a group of items with legitimate uses are being used to manufacture an illegal controlled substance. Providing an understanding of how the pieces of the clandestine lab puzzle fit together, this book outlines the steps needed to identify and shut down these operations, as well as successfully prosecute the perpetrators.

If you are law enforcement and need information on all aspects of Clan Labs, this book is for you. I have a stack of DEA manuals and NES guide books and this beats them all, combined. From production to prosecution this book has it all. It's a little pricey but worth every dollar. Check out the "look inside" link. That's only a peek at what this excellent book has to offer.

    Book Description

Vaccine A tells a story of betrayal, of medical arrogance flourishing in the absence of public accountability, shielded by an unquestioning deference to national security. Investigative journalist Gary Matsumoto reveals that thousands of young men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces were subjected to medical experiments that were conducted without their knowledge or consent-and that have put them in grave danger. Not only have military scientists performed unethical experiments on U.S. and British soldiers; not only are they refusing to admit either the experiments or the effects they caused; not only are they continuing to use a deadly substance in experimental vaccines-this substance is being developed for use in vaccines intended for mass immunization around the globe. In an alarming narrative, Vaccine A recounts this scientific tragedy-from the U.S. Army's tradition of medical experimentation on soldiers through to the present, where the consequences of these experimental vaccines, if administered to civilians, will be unimaginably devastating.

5 out of 5 stars How the government hates ill veterans and wants them to die.......2007-09-30

The books documents a slow death. Painful and debilitating. The government does not care.

    2 out of 5 stars A fascinating subject, but a repetitive book.......2007-02-18

I had been waiting a year to find the time to read this intriguing book. However, having just finished it, I find myself dissatisfied and frustrated. While the subject is certainly interesting and one on which we should probably all educate ourselves, I found the book to be extremely repetitive. As a medical student, the science wasn't over my head but I caught myself skimming parts of the last 75 pages for new information that hadn't already been written about earlier in the book. Matsumoto says the same thing 400 different ways... the only part that drew me in were the personal stories scattered throughout the pages. Reading the book jacket is probably sufficient to tell you everything you'd want to know... I'm thoroughly disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars It reads like a novel.......2006-07-13

Gary Matsumoto is a very talented author. This book is written in the style of a novel, even though it is non-fiction and scientifically oriented. The science is explained in lay person's terms and is easy to understand. The story is well paced and keeps one's interest.

Everyone to whom I loaned this book just loved it, even though its frightening to think we're living under a government that would allow harmful vaccines to be used on people. The information in this book is important to the general public and could save lives. The only people who would not enjoy this book are the ones who trust the government and the pharmaceutical industry and could not stand to have that trust shaken.

5 out of 5 stars This excellent exposý should be a bestseller!.......2006-05-06

I had originally planned on a military career and was destined for Annapolis back in the 1980s, but then learned that hundreds of U.S. servicemen had been cruelly abandoned in Vietnam by "our" government as POWs. (Read "Kiss The Boys Goodbye")

    Well, the treason continues...

Matsumoto's superb book chronicles modern evidence that our military has again been given the shaft. While Vaccine A may not have originally been a conspiracy, the subsequent coverup certainly is. Afflicted men and women who honorably fought for America are being told that their vaccine-induced afflictions are imaginary or fakery.

If you want to serve your country, be sure that you are not taking a dramatic health risk from your government in doing so. If you've a child who is considering enlisting, read this book before they unknowingly sign away their life for dangerous medical experimentation performed without their informed consent.

Squalene vaccines are now being stored for the rest of us, for the next overblown or contrived health issue. You look at your food before you eat it, don't you? Maybe you should look at the next vaccine very carefully before it's injected into your body.

Our Gulf War vets had no way of knowing that the squalene vaccine was extremely harmful. But thanks to their unwitting sacrifice, we can protect ourselves with this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Citizens!.......2005-06-05

What is the cost of Freedom? Within this well researched book is an example. The Anthrax vaccine given during the Gulf War through current times, laced with a toxic substance call squalene, is such an example. The research within this book is beyond question. Every veteran, patriot, and ordinary citizen of the USA, Canada, Great Britian, Austraila, and possibly New Zeland should read this book, no holds barred! Highly recommended!

      Book Description

Deceit and Denial details the attempts by the chemical and lead industries to deceive Americans about the dangers that their deadly products present to workers, the public, and consumers. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner pursued evidence steadily and relentlessly, interviewed the important players, investigated untapped sources, and uncovered a bruising story of cynical and cruel disregard for health and human rights. This resulting exposé is full of startling revelations, provocative arguments, and disturbing conclusions--all based on remarkable research and information gleaned from secret industry documents.
This book reveals for the first time the public relations campaign that the lead industry undertook to convince Americans to use its deadly product to paint walls, toys, furniture, and other objects in America's homes, despite a wealth of information that children were at risk for serious brain damage and death from ingesting this poison. This book highlights the immediate dangers ordinary citizens face because of the relentless failure of industrial polluters to warn, inform, and protect their workers and neighbors. It offers a historical analysis of how corporate control over scientific research has undermined the process of proving the links between toxic chemicals and disease. The authors also describe the wisdom, courage, and determination of workers and community members who continue to voice their concerns in spite of vicious opposition. Readable, pathbreaking, and revelatory, Deceit and Denial provides crucial answers to questions of dangerous environmental degradation, escalating corporate greed, and governmental disregard for its citizens' safety and health.

This is an extraordinary book. Unlike other books that address the corruption of industry, this book has the documents and information that you really need. Few stories of environmental duplicity ever provide this kind of detail and data.

But most importantly, it reads like a detective story, which, in fact, it is! Bill Moyers is absolutely correct in his cover blurb! What a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible for those who want the whole truth.......2003-10-21

I really enjoyed -- if that is a word you can use when describing the satanic greed of corporations -- this work. The two authors present an exhausting history behind the lead and vinyl chloride industries and their penchant for trying to buy science and keep the public and government misinformed, decade after decade, about the toxicity of their products.

One aspect of the ongoing struggle with corporate giants that the authors point out is that these industries often enjoy immense tax relief, especially in states like Louisiana, as the following excerpt indicates:

". . . "For example, IMC-Agrico, which received $15 million in property tax relief between 1988 and 1997, was a major polluter in Louisiana, releasing 12.8 million pounds of toxic chemicals in the manufacturer of fertilizers and other chemical products; Rubicon, Inc., a chemical company in Geismar, released 8.4 million pounds of chemicals and was exempted from $9 million in property taxes; Monsanto released 7.7 million pounds of toxic chemicals, but Lousiana 'excused Monsanto from payment of $45 million in property taxes over the past decade.'" [page 275]

One can easily see the inversion of the idea of corporate responsiblity in the above excerpt. Rather than government(s) charging more to companies that spew their toxins everywhere, they charge less! It is as if the national policy could thus be expressed as "Help and show compassion to those who hate you and lie to you, and whose chemical waste products may kill you. This is the established and true way!"

Yet, as the book points out, so called "libertarian" organizations like the Cato Institute usually argue on the side of the corporations. This holds true not only in terms of human rights in general, but also in simple economics. It is the corporations who violate most egregiously the principle of a flat, equitable, and level tax (or equitable anything). I've also seen this penchant for defending corporations repeatedly in the Reason Foundation's writings. This is depressing for me, as I not only favor a libertarian philosophy, but for years voted libertarian and was a member of both the state and national parties. One is suckered into the libertarian culture by the rationality and commonsense against such atrocious policies as the drug war, and then one is confronted with the opposite of intelligence in other matters, much as democrats have suckered folks into the idea that they don't aid foreign despots (they do!), or that Republicans are for limited government (ha!).

(Fortunately, I voted for Ralph Nader in the last election).

But regardless of ones politcal sympathies and/or affiliation, this book is a masterpiece, and should be consumed by we "consumers" like the way marathon runners guzzle liquids to prevent dehydration. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Whiggish View of History.......2003-05-18

Whether we know it or not, we all cherish a Whiggish view of history - mankind emerging from dank darkness and ignorance of the past into the sunny destiny of modern civilisation. Such is the stuff of fairy tales, and the child within us will not let us accept any other.

Basing themselves on historical documentation unearthed in litigation to which the US chemical industry has been submitted over the recent decades, the authors - historians both - have portrayed two grim tales of deceit and denial. The first involves lead, whose poisonous character was known since time immemorial, and yet was used indiscriminately in paint, and then in gasoline. The second is the history of vinyl chloride, the mainstay of the petrochemical industry, whose cancer-causing character was long denied.

Lead was defeated by technology. Other minerals made better paint bases, and lead in gasoline was banned when catalytic converters were added to the petrol engine. The current gasoline additives are just as cancerous - but that's a story still to be written.

Caught out in lies and deceit in the `70s about the cancerous effects of vinyl chloride, the petrochemical industry reeled, und knuckled under. It did not even cost them that much. As indicated at pg. 223, the industry paid $ 270 million dollars for doing a job that it had estimated would cost $90 billion - and the government thought it might cost $ 1 billion.

But the industry learned its lesson. It would not submit again to the checks and balances of a democratic society. Politicians were bought, courts intimidated - and heck, science needs research money. A successful campaign against `big government' was launched, and `deregulation' mania swept the land - self-regulation is to solve all problems. Now the governor from the dirtiest state of the Union - and proud of it - is in the White House.

The end of the book is a distressing description of the rearguard battles fought by the citizens of Louisiana to avoid that `cancer lane' - as the region between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is dubbed - become upgraded to `cancer super-highway'.
The list of the participants in this story of denial and deceit are not the `dirty back-yard tinkerers', the scum of the chemical earth. The best of the finest of the sector are involved, individually, and in Associations. Past errors or malfeasance is no object.

We do not learn from past mistakes. Except better to cover up our misdeeds.

5 out of 5 stars Important book for understanding our toxic world.......2003-04-19

Two respected historians of environmental health weigh in on two of the twentieth century's biggest sources of industrial pollution--lead and plastics. Equipped with an incredible bounty of inside-the-industry documents gleaned from major toxic tort law suits, the authors uncover more smoking guns than you're likely to find in a Sam Peckinpah film. You'll never look at the Dutch Boy the same way again.

3 out of 5 stars Title promises too much..........2001-07-19

The author is an expert in failure analysis in the aerospace industry, and seems to have a fairly good background in that field. The great merit of the book is to discuss the fundamentals of failure and related topics form a metallurgist's point of view. However, most of the relevant part of the book is overly concentrated on discussions of case studies of failures in aerospace parts. Other case studies, such as failures in automotive parts, are lacking. Highly recommended if one works in the aerospace industry, but not as useful for professionals of other fields of activity.

        Book Description

On December 2, 1943 about fifty ships lay waiting at Bari, Italy for their cargoes to be unloaded. The harbor was so crowded that moored ships almost touched each other. Suddenly, the German Luftwaffe thundered down out of a clear evening sky and laid waste to the busy port. In the span of twenty minutes, the raid became the worst bombing of Allied shipping since Pearl Harbor two years earlier. In fact, this attack became known as Little Pearl Harbor. Seventeen Allied ship were destroyed. But the attack and destruction were only preludes of the horror to come. A U.S. Liberty ship laden with a topsecret cargo of mustard gas bombs received a direct hit and exploded, killing the entired crew and spreading its deadly toxic cargo across the water and through the air of Bari. The loss of life was appalling. More than one thousand Allied servicemen and more than one thousand civilians were killed. Yet, to this day, few know of the disaster at Bari. This book describes what happened, how it happened and examines the Allied coverup afterward and the fact that World War II mustard gas is seeping up through the world's oceans today.

1 out of 5 stars As Bad as it Gets.......2003-09-27

"Nightmare in Bari" is virtually a textbook example of how not to write history. Ill-written, badly researched, confusingly organized, the book is a disservice to historians, readers, and, not the least, the victims. Reminick couldn't be bothered to check either German or Italian records, so we're denied crucial information on the raid--we don't even get an estimate as to how many civilian casualties there were, only a vague "thousands", a pretty serious failing, in my opinion.

Reminick is really interested in the WW II Merchant Marine, so we get page after interminable page on what ships were present, what they were carrying, where they were bound, etc., the equivalent of telling the 9/11 story from the point of view of a fire engine manufacturer. In contrast, it's never made clear what kind of aircraft the German pilots were flying, much less who they were or what they thought about things.

There's also a number of chapters and appendixes on postwar poison gas dumping which, while interesting (and well-deserving of a volume of their own), have little to do with the topic and were obviously added to pad a 170-page book to the 200+ mark.

You will finish "Nightmare in Bari" more confused about the event than when you went in. Little worse can be said about any book.

Mr. Reminick, I salute you sir. Finally a piece of literature which should be required reading for not only all adults, but all kids in history classes. This book is well written and outstanding!! It must have taken many hours to write such an accurate account. This book is a must have!!

4 out of 5 stars Unrecognized events that weave the fabric of history.......2001-09-24

Reminick has created a detailed historical document about a little recognized event that reaveals the full nature of events that go into the bucket of history. Nightmare in Bari reveals the sacrifice and tragedy that was endured to bring World War II to victorious closure against a great evil. In the glamorizing of WW II, the Merchant Marine is often neglected. In Reminick's book it gets true recognition. Buy the book and read it.

5 out of 5 stars For you history seekers.......2001-09-17

Everybody knows about Normandy, Iwo Jima, Pearl Harbor, etc.. but it seems know one knows about the North Atlantic & Mediterranean, where more rounds of ammunition were fired, more bombs dropped, and more ships sunk than any other theater of operations. Read this book if you want to become more knowledgeable of World War 2. I know, I was there
        Note: my age is 77

5 out of 5 stars Reminick reveals the sacrifices made by the Merchant Marine.......2001-08-28

I have had some knowledge of the disaster at Bari for several years but this book reveals an unbelievable truth, the ultimate description of war. It is a story of incompetence, neglect, mistakes and the tragedy of friendly fire. The very definition of war is horror and this story covers it all. The friendly fire from shore guns into the allied ships and docks is not the only friendly fire casualties, the fact that we killed and wounded so many people with our own product of chemical warfare also qualifies as friendly fire. The Germans didn't gas the people. By covering up the true cause of the injuries many other people died because of improper care. Those are the accidents of war because that's what war is. Those who became irate over the friendly fire deaths of Desert Storm simply don't understand war. More than just the description of the nightmare of December 3, 1943 and the following days of suffering and death, the story divulges just how near the war brought us to the Doomsday countdown to midnight. So many times during the war we were on the threshold of mass chemical disaster, both from the Axis and Allied sides. The unbelievable amount of tonnage manufactured by both sides, if unleashed, would have killed and maimed millions of fighting men and civilians. We are not certain yet that the mass disposal of the gasses was successful enough to prevent future deaths after sixty or more years. I thought Reminick's evaluation was well taken about comparing chemical warfare to other questionable war products for killing people. Where is the line of inhuman warfare? It is all inhuman. A rifle shot between the eyes or a bayonet in the gut kills a soldier just as dead as an atomic bomb. It was clear to me that the only thing that kept the W.W. II commanders from using gas was the fear of retaliation. They would have had gas attacks square in the middle of their cities in a matter of hours and they new it. That saved us in W.W. II. Everything is relative and now nearly 60 years later the Doomsday clock is ticking again and it reads nine minutes to midnight. Now, it is nuclear weapons instead of gas. But the same rules hold true. The fear of retaliation has to be in place to stop the initial attack. The players now are different. Third world countries now have the ability to wipe out our eastern seaboard from New York City to Baltimore in one sweep. Only fear of complete annihilation of their homeland will stop them from an attack. I wish every congressman could read this book because it really is an editorial for modern day defense at any cost. This story is a shocking revelation of the greatest cover up of the war as well as one of the greatest disasters, but hidden in the book is the warning that we must always hold the biggest threat. Book Description

The key to clandestine laboratory detection is the investigator's ability to recognize the equipment and chemicals that constitute the lab. This requires a ready reference that clearly explains how to identify the hazards, provides the proper measures for safely addressing them, and features a format that allows the information to be taken directly into the field for quick reference and easy access. Field Guide to Clandestine Laboratory Identification and Investigation provides concise information for field use along with reproducible worksheets for crime scene investigators. As the companion to the training manual Forensic Investigation of Clandestine Laboratories, this guide features visual representations of the scientific equipment used to clandestinely produce drugs and explosives. It presents a list of the chemicals commonly encountered in clandestine laboratories and includes information about chemical hazards and the personal protective equipment required. The book also discusses proper processing of the lab site for the physical evidence necessary for prosecution. Providing the methods and materials necessary to successfully identify clandestine lab activity in the field, this guide belongs in the hands of anyone involved in the investigation, examination, and prosecution of clandestine labs. Crime scene technicians, emergency responders, forensic scientists, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys will reach for this valuable resource time and time again.

          Book Description

          Review of previous edition:

"Trevor Kletz's book makes an invaluable contribution to the systematic, professional and scientific approach to accident investigation". The Chemical Engineer

Fully revised and updated, the third edition of Learning from Accidents provides more information on accident investigation, including coverage of accidents involving liquefied gases, building collapse and other incidents that have occurred because faults were invisible (e.g. underground pipelines).

By analysing accidents that have occurred Trevor Kletz shows how we can learn and thus be better able to prevent accidents happening again. Looking at a wide range of incidents, covering the process industries, nuclear industry and transportation, he analyses each accident in a practical and non-theoretical fashion and summarises each with a chain of events showing the prevention and mitigation which could have occurred at every stage.

At all times Learning from Accidents, 3rd Edition emphasises cause and prevention rather than human interest or cleaning up the mess. Anyone involved in accident investigation and reporting of whatever sort and all those who work in industry, whether in design, operations or loss prevention will find this book full of invaluable guidance and advice.

          Completely up-dated.

Shows, by analysing accidents that have occurred, how we can learn from them, and prevent the same accidents happening again.

I am surprised to see so few reviews for T.A.Kletz books.

If you are dealing with potentially hazardous installations or systems, and not only if you are an engineer, you should read some Kletz. Allways hinging his books around his very message, T.A.Kletz constantly gives interesting practical examples and fine advice, from his 40 years own experience. He 'dismounts' accidents, their causes, superficial and underlying down to the detail. He shows the different aspects of human/organisational responsibility in accidents and their prevention. After going through one of his books, "human error" never reads the same again. In "Learning from Accidents", he does follow that methodology for about ten famous accidents, various generic accidents and many incidents. He shows how major accidents come out of sequences of minor defficiencies and are helped by sleeping faults, poor management, poor procedures, poor incident reporting,... poor design... and poor remembrance of previous accidents/incidents.

If we don't learn from our mistakes, why bother making them?

          ;)
