4 out of 5 stars There is a major bug with the CD software........2007-01-11

The problem can be resolved by thier "stupid" customer service people, if you can somehow convince them that you have the correct CD. The Merck software is excellent, and the Cambridgesoft software running it is terrible, I feel sorry for Merck. It wouldn't run properly on my machine, I had to go back and forth over 4 days to resolve this issue with their outsourced (to India) technical staff via email. Apparently if you have a previous version of Merck installed with Cambridgesoft software on your XP, then you will need to perform some surgery on your Registry, and then install an update into certain files locaed on the C drive.

Once you get it working, it should be fine.

No doubt however that the TEXT Merck Index is EXCELLENT.

3 out of 5 stars Great Reference - BEWARE MISSING PAGES.......2006-12-06

This is an indispensable reference book. I use it daily. I recently upgraded to this most recent version. I have had it about 3 weeks. I went to look up quinine today and couldn't find the Q's. Then I had a brief moment of disbelief and I recited the alphabet to myself to make sure I wasn't missing something. Then, I noticed my copy skipped from page 1376 to page 1425! Fortunately I can still exchange the book, but beware....count your pages when you get this book.

Otherwise, great book. And the included CD-ROM provides a little extra searching power. I would prefer that the CD interface and printouts were a little cleaner.

4 out of 5 stars MERCK'S REVELATIONS.......2002-12-29

This edition of "The Merck Index: An Encyclopedia of Chemicals, Drugs, & Biologicals" shows remarkable improvement over its predecessor.
Boasting of diverse groups of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, it is a success in its own right. There are just plenty to be explored! The book brims with accurate up-to-date information. Pharmacists, Medics, Chemists, Biologists, Physicists, Agriculturists, and many other professionals who work with elements, compounds and mixtures will find this book very useful. It is revised, and is complemented with detailed descriptions, which include molecular formulae, molecular weights, as well as the percentage compositions of constituent chemicals in a compound or mixture.
It is a valuable reference tool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent chemical reference!.......2002-12-16

This book must be the most organized reference book I have ever used. Its so fulfilling to be able to find exactly what you're looking for when you need it. Includes a common name index, chemical formula index, as well as registry numbers, therapeutic categories for drugs, useful tables, and organic chemical equations. highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars don't like it.......2001-12-05

personally, I think that this index has the most innacurate information available. It never has what most people need and it's too hard to use.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written.......2007-01-05

The book was used for 90% of my class. It well written for the student with little exposure to chemistry. The pictures and diagrams could have better depicted the subject matter. The price was $40 less than what my college bookstore charges. Great value.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook.......2006-04-19

This is an excellent textbook for a two semester course in General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry for Health Professions. It does a very good job of explaining the concepts of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry. It also has excellent applications on disease processes and pathophysiology. The organization of each chapter is a plus. I highly recommend this textbook. It is number one!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Physiological Chemistry.......2006-03-05

This book is exactly as described by the publisher. A very readable overview of general and organic chemistry. A comprehensive study of the organic molecules and chemical processes specific to the human body.

I liked this book so much that I'm ordering a hardcover copy to replace my original paperback edition.

I have to admit that this is the most interesting books I've ever read. If you want to know how the basics of life all tie together and form the world and existance around you then this is for you. This book has seriously opened up the world to me. I cannot look at anything around me like I used to. I recommend getting and reading this book solo. The way it is written makes it perfectly understandable without a teacher or professor of any kind. Everything is spelled out clearly with simple everday comparisons and examples. There are a ton of useful problems to work on to assist in cementing your knowledge in place. Seriously though I really can't think of any other book I've ever read that was more interesting than this one. Pick it up and prepare to see your world unfold in front of you as a new and chaotic, complex and beautifully organized universe.

      Book Description

Essentials of Biological Chemistry is an introduction to this exciting and rapidly developing field of the chemistry of biologically active compounds. Assuming little in the way of biological knowledge, this text aims to develop students' understanding of how biological processes are controlled by underlying chemical principles. Taking a mechanistic approach, the book starts with the basics and carefully leads the reader through the essentials of the field. It begins by looking at biological systems and the physical chemistry of the cell, and then moves on to cover protein structure and function and catalytic proteins, and concludes with a number of case studies. Each chapter is carefully structured, and includes examples, summaries, self-test questions and problems.

      Book Description

The long awaited text for 21st century courses in biological inorganic chemistry is now available. Organized and edited by Ivano Bertini, Harry Gray, Ed Stiefel, and Joan Valentine, with contributions from many other world leaders in the field, this all-new book is equally appropriate for graduate or senior undergraduate courses in bioinorganic chemistry. The book has been extensively class-tested at Princeton and UCLA, and it includes tutorials in biology and biochemistry and in inorganic chemistry to aid students of varying backgrounds. The main text is divided into two parts. Part A, "Overviews of Biological Inorganic Chemistry," sets forth the unifying principles of the field. A full course in bioinorganic chemistry could be based entirely on this overview section, which is a really a book within a book! Part B, "Metal-Ion Containing Biological Systems," describes specific classes of systems in detail. A special feature is the strong connection to the genomic revolution that has dramatically enhanced our ability to define the function of gene products in living organisms. Throughout the book, protein data bank codes are given for structures discussed in the text, and students are encouraged to learn to use the PDB in their courses and research. This exciting new book will be a must read for years to come for all students and researchers interested in the field of biological inorganic chemistry.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, too speculative.......2007-06-09

I get sick of hearing about chemical evolution as if it is the only way life can exist, they never point out the extreme unlikelyhood of the theory, or even that it is a theory. I wouldn't complain since most science texts that venture a guess about origins yields similar speculation, but this book really beats you over the head with it.
Otherwise, the compilation of authors is great, and the scope of the text is very applicable once you get to actual data that can be measured.

      Book Description

This text, aimed at nursing and other allied health majors, boasts a clear, comprehensible writing style and a pedagogical approach that is easy to apply and use. The early chapters of the text focus on fundamental chemical principles. Later chapters, built on the foundation of these basic principles, develop the concepts and applications central to the fields of organic chemistry and biochemistry.

The development of chemical topics always starts at the ground level. Complicated mathematics is minimized and used only when it helps clarify a topic. The text's pedagogy is supported by strong graphics, features that help students learn and retain material, and rich problem sets.

      5 out of 5 stars A very solid text!.......2003-08-28

I'm a computer guy working at a biotech and wanted to know more about what the guys in the coats are doing. This book is a very good introduction for those with a science bent.

I especially enjoyed reading about the Bohr model of the atom (which is what I learned in school) only to have it totally dissed after 3/4ths of a page as inadequate!

I don't know how well it works as a class room text (this is night-time reading for me) but for a enjoyable well written text on Biochemistry this is an excellent choice.
