3 out of 5 stars Inspired Scared Novice--But Use Only 1/2 Essential Oils!!!.......2004-12-23

I bought this book several years ago--and just got around to making soap for Christmas presents this year. This book was inspiring since it was short, simple, straight-forward . . . recipe was same--just different blends of essential oils.

DON'T USE 4 OUNCES OF ESSENTIAL OILS per batch--WAY TOO MUCH: 1) pool of excess essential oils sits on top of soap, 2) soap never hardens up quite right (according to Cavitch's book), 3) Essential oils are EXPENSIVE, 4) Scent is TOO STRONG, 5) Some essential oils (like cinnamon) used in called-for amounts actually too concentrated for skin (read other reviews!)

This book is a great starter for novices if you do the following: 1) cut the recipes by 1/4 to learn on smaller batches since the ingredients can be costly--in case your batch does not turn out during your learning stage; 2) invest in a good digital scale that allows you to "zero out" after adding each successive ingredient to the same container (accurate to 1/4 ounce and much faster--many initial mistakes attributed to measuring errors); 3) buy coconut oil at Walmart (under $3 for 31.5 oz); 4) obtain reasonably priced essential oils via internet at A Garden Eastward (http://addy.com/brinkley/); 5) Buy one of Susan Cavitch's soapmaking books next to learn from your mistakes and/or take your soapmaking to the next level--by then, you'll be motivated to absorb more complex information that seemed overwhelming/initimidating at first--which will make so much more sense once you've made a couple of batches.

2 out of 5 stars Nice photos, but not great soap.......2004-12-20

The photos are wonderful. The recipes are only varied according to the eo's that are used. The amounts of eo's would not apply for pure eo's. Soapmakers beware! Start with a small amount of eo, find out how it effects your skin and those using your soap, you can always adjust.
non tallow soap is too soft to make for everyday use. I use my soap for everything, including the laundry. I would not be able to do this with a vegetable soap. Tallow also cuts the cost, and last a lot longer.

3 out of 5 stars Just one recipe. One. That's it........2004-07-02

This is a really beautiful book -- the photography is gorgeous and I like Sandy Maine's style of writing. She is very readable.

But...

There is one recipe in this book, dressed up with different fragrance/essential oils and "fillers". I think this shows a total and complete lack of imagination, considering the WORLD full of God's beautiful, healing oils He put here for us to enjoy. But all it is is olive oil, coconut oil, Crisco...olive oil, coconut oil, Crisco...olive oil, coconu-- well, you get the picture.

I also think that adding 3 ounces of lavender to that baby soap is going to just about knock the baby across the room. That is an awful lot of scent for a baby soap.

I'm not sorry I bought the book. The pictures alone gave me some great ideas for packaging and displays. But buy another book if you want some REAL recipes. Save the money you would have spent on buying the enormous quantities of essential oils for these soaps and spend it on a gorgeous bottle of avocado oil. Let your imagination soar. Soapmaking is, in my opinion, an art form. It doesn't have to be as plodding and pedestrian as this book makes it seem.

5 out of 5 stars Soap book - simple herbal recipes.......2004-06-27

Este es uno de mis libros preferidos, y tengo muchos, tiene una fotos lindas, es claro, simple y preciso, sus recetas son faciles de hacer y economicas, me encanta.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Package.......2003-05-13

Sandy Maine presents the whole package in her luscious soapmaking books, thus I credit her as an important inspiration for my career in bodycare. Maine goes deeper than merely presenting recipes, her books contain gorgeous photographs that are truelly inspirational as well as touching personal narratives.

The fact that the recipes are variations on the same base oils makes them economical because you don't need to invest in numerous types of fixed oils to achieve success. You can also feel confident about adding your own unique colorants and other ingredients, thus creating your own recipes.

All of her books are eco-friendly and encourage respect and engagement with nature.

Sandy Maine is also highly involved in the field of soapmaking. She advises and inspires many soapmakers in various stages of their development. As a soapmaker who has gone from novice to professional I highly recommend Maine's soapmaking books.

Book Description

The third edition of Theory of Simple Liquids is an updated, advanced, but self-contained introduction to the principles of liquid-state theory. It presents the modern, molecular theory of the structural, thermodynamic interfacial and dynamical properties of the liquid phase of materials constituted of atoms, small molecules or ions. This book leans on concepts and methods form classical Statistical Mechanics in which theoretical predictions are systematically compared with experimental data and results from numerical simulations.

The overall layout of the book is similar to that of the previous two editions however, there are considerable changes in emphasis and several key additions including:

up-to-date presentation of modern theories of liquid-vapour coexistence and criticality
areas of considerable present and future interest such as super-cooled liquids and the glass transition
the area of liquid metals, which has grown into a mature subject area, now presented as part of the chapter ionic liquids

Provides cutting-edge research in the principles of liquid-state theory
Includes frequent comparisons of theoretical predictions with experimental and simulation data
Suitable for researchers and post-graduates in the field of condensed matter science (Physics, Chemistry, Material Science), biophysics as well as those in the oil industry

    4 out of 5 stars clear descriptions.......2005-07-19

The book is pitched towards a final year of high school or a first undergraduate year. Where the latter is perhaps for a non-chemistry major. Moore writes straightforwardly about basic concepts like Avogardro's Number and molarity.

There is also some coverage of organic chemistry. Of necessity, this goes little beyond definitions of the main organic types, like ethers, esters and aldehydes. Organic chemistry has a rich network of synthesis pathways that the text can only touch the fringes of. Yet hopefully, a keen student might be encouraged enough to remember these terms and even venture deep into chemistry.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-17

This book is the worst possible one I can imagine for learning chemistry in this day and age. It is woefully out of date. The Periodic Table of the Elements isn't even complete! And the electron configuration they teach is outmoded. I bought it based on the reviews but felt very disappointed when I received it and tried to teach a student from it. I hope I can save you the same disappointment!

5 out of 5 stars Chemistry Made Simple, a scientific approach.......2004-03-14

Chemistry Made Simple is a proven guide to the fundamentals of chemistry. Chemistry is a science that involves quantitative and qualitative thinking. This book encourages both. Chemistry is not a pure mathematical exercise but an observation of the interactions of mass and energy in their manifold forms and their practical applications. This book is a clairvoyant approach to these interactions and applications. Highly recommended as an introduction to the science for all ages.

2 out of 5 stars Up to the minute chemistry from many years ago.......2003-09-24

Good things about this book: The explanations are reasonably easy to understand and the topics fit well with a chemistry class.

Bad things about this book: The material is badly outdated and some topics aren't covered in enough depth.

If you're a high school student looking for a very basic reference, this one is easy enough to read that you should do OK. However, if you need something up to date that covers things in greater depth, you may want to try something else.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time!.......2003-09-12

Do not waste your money. This book is horrible. It is severely outdated, it does not even provide the complete Table of Elements. The Metric system they show is not very accurate, nor does it show many applicable conversions. They give you one example per unit. It is a very confusing book, severely lacking in information.

I am currently in an advanced chemistry class, and this book has done nothing for me. All of the research in it, is for Junior High level. This is not a refresher for college classes. So far, I have not made use of any of the information provided inside.

I do not recommend it, you would be better off purchasing a used textbook with useful information that you will actually use.

4 out of 5 stars Concise Review: A good reference book.......2002-11-11

I enjoyed the first 9 chapters of basic chemistry but my interest slowed with the steady diet of formulas. I think it's an excellent reference book and a book that would go very well with an outline course. I miss some of the examples given in standard books. But a very good primer.

    1 out of 5 stars Snake-Oil Salesman.......2007-09-09

David Stewart is the worst type of snake-oil salesman. He uses his PhD in seismology and organic-chemistry jargon to imply that essential oils cure everything.

There is no statistically valid research in this book that supports the effectiveness of essential oils. Stewart uses the testimony of others to imply that his oils are effective, but testimony doesn't prove anything. Why? Consider this: how many testimonies do you think he includes where the person says the oils didn't work? None. You are given a biased, inaccurate picture of essential-oil effectiveness.

Even worse, Stewart uses the old trick of giving testimonies instead of honest research. The FDA does not allow someone to lie about whether a product actually cures a disease, but you can "quote" someone else. Instead of honest research, Stewart uses quote after quote to imply that he can cure you with essential oils. As a PhD, he should be ashamed of himself. He knows better.

Stewart is a charlatan using his education and religion to prey upon the sick and needy. He wants you to buy his oils and take his training courses, so that he can earn his thirty shekels of silver. As a PhD, he has betrayed his duty to search for truth, and as a Christian, he has offended God for his lies. He is selling snake oil to make money from your suffering.

    Do not buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Confused about Essential Oils???.......2007-03-12

I got interested in EOs for the 2nd time in my life a few months ago. The first time, I guess I just "spun out" because I couldn't get a handle on them. This time I was reading, reading, reading, ordering books here on Amazon to gain more information about EOs and it seemed like every oil was good for everything, so I decided it was time to find a class or conference or seminar or something to help me sort through everything.

Thanks to Google, I found one about 100 miles from my home and only a couple of weeks off. The site I found was [...] and David and Lee Stewart are the owners of that website. They listed several seminars on their site - most of which were taught by some of their students, but the one coming up close to me was going to be taught by David and Lee, themselves. I'm thinking this is what I need to do - so I signed up. Two of the books which David wrote were part of the curriculum for the weekend event, so I went ahead and ordered them from Amazon so I could read them before the class. The other book, EOs of the Bible came and I was able to read most of that, but this book, the Chemistry book was on back order. They (the Stewarts) had copies of the book for students to use at the Seminar, so I got to have a book in hand while many references were made to the chemical aspects of EOs.

Okay, I'm not a chemistry student - never had a class in it in my life (how'd I manage to escape that, I have to wonder), so only a few terms were familiar to me, but the class - and also this book - made it clear. He could have named the book EO Chemistry for DUMMIES - and it would have worked for me. The book simplifies the chemical makeup of EOs and makes the "chaotic world" (my words) of EOs simple (ok, simpler) - and you begin to make sense of it all.

I've always been a conceptual learner - so this book and class were just what I needed. When someone tells me to jump, I don't ask "how high" - I ask "why?" He breaks down the majority of EOs down to their chemical constituents and categorizes them as phenols, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and several other categories of lesser significance in terms of their effect on the body. I'll probably never memorize the periodic table, but I understand a lot more about how it works.

I recommend the book highly if you're curiosity is veering off in this direction. The class was good, too, but you can probably get the gist of it from a few hours/days with this book. David and Lee Stewart are YLEO distributors, but you certainly don't have to sign up for this MLM company to benefit from using EOs (I didn't). If you prefer to just ask "how high", then buy Gary Young's (YLEO's founder) Desk Reference for Essential Oils. It is more prescriptive in what oil to use for what purpuse. If you own these two books, you pretty much have all you need to know. Good health to all of you who are looking at the use of EOs as an alternative to allopathic medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Informative and Extremely Useful, a must read reference!.......2006-08-13

This reference is thorough and wonderful! All the chemistry is easily understandable, and the charts and graphs on essential oils from young living are worth the price of the book alone, not to mention the approach the author takes to teaching basic chemistry (easy to follow, especially for non-students).

I can't describe enough the value of this book, it is far beyond it's purchase price, and amazon offers a great deal too! This book is so great, it's inspired me to teach a class locally about the chemistry and therapeutic benefits of young living essential oils! Way to go Dr. Stewart!

Absolutely Awesome! And of course, the Maker of Heaven and Earth's creation is what the book is all about, so how can you go wrong?

    Product Description

This new version of a classic updates much of the material in earlier editions, including the first chapter, on the history of the field. Important modifications reflect major discoveries of the past decades. A historical perspective is maintained throughout. The reader is drawn into the process of discovery: starting with a phenomenon, finding plausible explanations and competing theories — and finally, the solution. The theory of magnetism is practically a metaphor for theoretical physics. The very first quantum many-body theory (Bethe’s ansatz) was devised for magnetic chains, just as mean-field theory was invented a century ago by Weiss to explain Curie’s Law. The first two chapters of this book are immensely readable, taking us from prehistory to the “spin valves" of the most recent past. Topics in subsequent chapters include: angular momenta and spin (Chapter 3), quantum theory of simple systems, followed by increasingly technical insights into ordered and random systems, thermal fluctuations, phase transitions, chaos and the like. Contemporary developments in nanotechnology now seek to take advantage of the electron’s spin as well as of its charge. The time is not far off when nano-circuits made entirely of silicon exhibit such many-body properties as superconductivity or ferromagnetism — without any superconducting materials or magnetic ions being present. The reader of this book will be prepared for such exotic twenty-first century applications. Daniel C Mattis, BS, MS, PhD, Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), is a frequent lecturer at research institutions and the author of several textbooks and numerous research articles. His expertise includes many-body theory, electrical conductivity, quantum theory of magnetism and most recently, nanotechnology. Prof. Mattis is on the editorial panel for high-temperature superconductivity of the International Journal of Modern Physics B and Modern Physics Letters B, both published by World Scientific. Currently serving as Professor in the Physics department at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, at various times he has been visiting Professor at Yale University (New Haven), State University of New York (Buffalo), Temple University (Philadelphia), and served as “Wei-Lun Visiting Professor" at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A founding member of the “Few-Body Physics" section of the APS, he has also served as Chair of the standing committee of the! APS for the “International Freedom of Scientists."

    4 out of 5 stars Good review.......2007-01-23

This book is a good review on this subject. In starting the book with a brief history of the magnetism, the author shows in a very soft way how important the Quantum Mechanics is to this subject. There are very good examples for each section and what there is most recent in this issue. Unfortunately, some important topics are treated in a very superficial way. As an example is the renormalization group which has an enormous application in magnetism. Despite that, this book would be a good choice to a course on introduction to magnetism.

2 out of 5 stars Not What Is Expected.......2007-01-01

The "made simple" part of the title is completely misleading. Its is not at all simple. Not at all at an introductry level.

The chapter on angular momentum has many "trivial" mistakes. For example, he writes J|Y) = (h-bar)m|Y) and calls "m the eigenvalue". But it is the "(h-bar)m" that is the eignevalue and not just "m".

A little later he writes that he will from this point on use units in which h-bar = 1. O.K. But then he continue to write in h-bar all over the place.

This book could use a good technical editor.

And, again, it is not a "made simple" book unless you already know the material.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent supplemental and review text........2007-05-15

I found this book very helpful if one needs a quick review of Org Chem. I have not taken any Org Chem courses since 1971 so at first I was totally lost. But when I used this text as a supplement to a Org Chem textbook like Morrison & Boyd's (my old 1971 copy!) the stuff made sense.

I suspect that this is a "test oriented" book for med students but I found it as an excellent supplemental text. If you are currently taking a Org Chem course then this book will definitely help. If you have been out of the loop for a while don't expect this book alone to get you up to speed.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific study guide.......2006-09-07

Let's face it, nothing is going to make Organic Chemistry simple, but if you use this study guide as an adjunct to your text, you may very well raise your grade from a C to a B, or from a B to an A. It's not magic, it's synergy. Dr. Davis has hit all the hot-button issues, pointed you at the important concepts, and outlined the major reaction mechanisms, all in a straightforward non-intimidating way. I've used this book twice, and it's paid off twice. If you're a natural A student, maybe you don't need this, but most of us can get real benefit from parleying this book with reasonably good study habits.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Organic Chemistry.......2006-08-06

"Organic Chemistry made ridiculously simple" is a great supplementary text. Its emphasis on first principles helps to establish a solid starting point for any organic chemistry student. It is direct and easy to understand with great diagrams, many examples, and occasional humor that help to introduce and emphasize various basic organic concepts. This emphasis on basic and core concepts helps to set up an intuitive foundation for branching out to other more complex subject areas. I would recommend this book in addition to the standard course text for any student and perhaps especially for a student who may be struggling a bit with this subject.

    5 out of 5 stars Great overview.......2006-07-24

I recommend this book as a straight forward outline of organic chemistry. It is an excellent supplement to use during an organic chemistry course.

    * The information is accurate
    * There isn't a lot of extra information, but it is complete
    * It is organized along the lines of a standard organic textbook
    * There seems to be a good mix of regular organic chemistry and biological applications
    * I found it very easy to find what I was looking for

1 out of 5 stars This book was a waste of money for me.......2004-05-04

I had taken organic chemistry in University a while back and wanted to refresh my knowledge. This book didn't explain anything, it just gave definitions, I read the first 10 pages and had no clue what I was reading. Unless you already have a background and know your material and you need a basic review, then this book might be for you, but I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody.
