3 out of 5 stars not really helpful if you've already graduated..........2007-08-16

I just graduated with my RN, BSN in May. I passed boards in July. I've been considering buying this book for several months, but just purchased it last week. I am disappointed. I mainly just skimmed through the book because it was not interesting at all. The majority of advice is common sense or things that I've already learned either in nursing school, in my job as a nurse extern, or as an RN. Save your money. The main thing the book concentrates on is networking. Joining groups and attending meetings. As a new graduate, I think you're too overwhelmed to jump into this stuff right away.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my career in the first months and beyond!.......2007-03-01

I have seen Donna speak several times. My most memorable was the first time hearing her speak at the National Student Nurse Association convention. She was so inspirational and helpful. Donna personally signed a copy of this book that book got me through some of my roughest times as a new nurse. Yes, her advise is logical common knowledge to some, but when your are new to a profession and somewhat timid, the words are a great gift of help! Thank you Donna for helping me survive my first year. Now, 5 years later, I am a thriving nurse that continues to reference the book at times as a refresher. I also encourage as many new grads as I can to read it.

Nursing is so fortunate to have a person like Donna to positively promote the profession.

Additionally, I educate nurses about bullying and typically refer my audience to Donna's site and her article "Do Nurses Really Eat Their Young." It's a great article and I agree with Donna wholly that there truly are more helping nurses than bullies. Unfortunately those few bullies have a large impact on the nursing profession. I attempt to help nurses "bully-proof" themselves and see there are ways to avoid the bullies and those bullies are not the majority in nursing. Donna has encouraged me in this endeavor. She also encouraged me to reinforce to my audience the new mantra she would like to create for nursing..."Nurses nurture their own."

All in all, what I have tried to get across to you here is:
1.) Nursing is a great profession,
2.) Donna is a great mentor for nurses,
3.) THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!

Over the weekend I purchased Your First Year As a Nurse: Making the
Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional because I wanted
a new start. Let me just say that 1) it was money well spent and 2)
purchasing this book should be made a mandatory requirement to any
student who starts a nursing program.

So far, I have read half the book. Already I have found some renewed
energy, and my enthusiasm about nursing is increasing again. I
graduated five months ago and took a job in an ICU where I have been working for four months and half months. Recently, I made the decision to leave the ICU.

I am starting in a step down unit tomorrow and I am very excited about
starting over. I experienced all of the following prior to making this
decision: frustration, fatigue, anxiety, dreading going to work, fear of
making mistakes, and many other emotions. Had I read your book prior to
starting this position, I could have avoided this painful period in my
nursing career. Of course, I have learned many valuable lessons. But I
do think nursing would earn a better reputation if newcomers did not have
to go through this experience. And I know that I am not the only one who has felt this way. I have read countless numbers of blogs on the internet of new grads who described the same feelings I shared earlier.

Thank you Ms. Cardlille for all the wonderful advice that you have shared. I joined the ANA today and contacted my state's Nurse Association regarding future events. I am looking forward to networking because you make it sound so much fun and rewarding. Please continue the work that you are doing. You are very inspiring to new nurses.

A grateful new grad.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for better understanding the new media world.......2007-03-20

I was very pleased with the vast wealth of information provided in this book. It was easy to understand and covered all aspects of the state of the media world!

5 out of 5 stars Television Disrupted.......2007-02-19

This is an excellent overview of all aspects of the television industry and what it is morphing into. I can see this being invaluable to anyone already directly involved in, or on the periphery of this industry.

It is educational as well for those not working in the business, or those looking to invest in the emerging technologies.

5 out of 5 stars TV disrupted is the most intelligent book on current and future TV biz.......2007-02-11

Television Disrupted is an excellent book, well written and intelligently describing a wide range of complex topics surrounding traditional TV and internet delivered video. It does a particularly good job in describing the recent changes and potential future directions of the television industry.

Working within the software industry serving traditional television, people have frequently asked me what they can read to build their knowledge of the TV business. Historically, this has been a tough question to answer as there have been a few discrete magazine articles that were interesting, but I was unware of any books that were current, accurate, or made sense about the future of TV. Television Disrupted has solved this dilema by providing a great overview of the historical television industry as well as the massive changes that are pending as the television business takes advantage of the opportunities provided by internet delivered video.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Media Execs.......2006-12-06

This book is a must read for those navigating the changing waters of the media industry. It contains a comprehensive industry overview, insightful analysis of current trends, thought-provoking predictions....and, it's an interesting and entertaining read as well.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2006-09-15

Finally a book about the future of media from someone intimately familiar with its past and present. Palmer has a unique perspective as both an extraordinary successful creative, and an extremely savvy businessman. The insights of his book were earned by doing, not learned by reading, and it distinguishes his perspective from nearly every other.

    David Thornburg, Director

    Guylene Robertson, Assistant Superintendent
    Cleveland Independent School District, Texas

Reconsider the relevancy of what you teach and discover how to get students to develop "real-world" problem-solving skills!

Through first-hand experience, author and educator Ted McCain concisely lays out the argument for preparing students for their world, guiding them to become independent and successful critical thinkers. Teaching for Tomorrow brings everyday life encounters and situations as text to the classroom, challenging students to engage more deeply in their learning and teachers in their teaching. By eliminating the typical stand and deliver approach, McCain hopes educators will now focus on using instruction that allows students to create knowledge for themselves.

Major components of the book include:

By gaining real-world skills rather than just "school" skills, students are engaged in thoughtful work, learning to collaborate, taking responsibility for their own time and tasks, and becoming creative problem solvers in the classroom and for life beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Digital TV........2000-07-24

This book does a great job of explaining audio & video concepts. It's perfect for technical folks who didn't know much about DTV (Jpeg, Mjpeg, Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2, etc ) and computer aspects of such Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding & decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with Digital Audio & Video production.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice job.......2000-04-08

This book is very good. Its four parts are very easy to search: analog audio, digital audio, analog video and digital video. They cover all of the existing aspects. As a university teacher, I use it for my course on Television Systems, but I think it is useful for an audio course, or a comprehensive audio and video course. I still think that books like these should have a spanish translation, for my students who do not read english.

4 out of 5 stars Good for general knoledge.......1999-08-01

This is a Hybrid book - gives too much information to be a intructory book, but not enough information to be able to implement anything. the book covers a lot of grounds, from detialed description on analog television to general details on mpeg and more, and short intruductory to a lot of topics, like firewire, scsi, ethernet, pci , etc...

5 out of 5 stars Very in-depth on all aspects of digital video and audio.......1998-06-23

The name is a little misleading - the book is really about television, and digital video (JPEG,MJEPEG, MPEG-1,MPEG-2 etc.) and digital audio and computer aspects of such. Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding/decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with digital video production, digital video equipment design or just wants to know exactly how it works.

      Book Description

Cebeci addresses transition from laminar to turbulent flows and considers solutions, mainly with the help of the linear stability theory and the ways in which it can be implemented accurately by numerical procedures. The main concern is transition of wall boundary layers, although one chapter is devoted to an approach based on the Navier-Stokes equations. The first three chapters summarize physical knowledge of the transition process, consider the stability equations and methods for predicting transition by linear stability theory, and describe efficient and accurate numerical methods for the solution of stability equations. Chapters 4 to 7 describe computer programs based on stability-theory approach to identify the location of transition in two- and three-dimensional incompressible and compressible flows, respectively, and Chapter 7 describes a computer program within the framework of parabolized stability equations. These programs are provided on an accompanying CD-ROM.

        Book Description

If you are looking for a lively, down-to-earth experience in the journey to innovative engineering management, this is definitely the book for you. The author's 20-plus year perspective indicates that, while most engineers will spend the majority of their careers as managers, most are dissatisfied with the transition. Much of this frustration is the result of lack of preparation and training. This book gives you a solid grounding in the critical attitudes and principles needed for success.

The book teaches you how to internalize the attitudes and master the associated skills needed to excel in, and be satisfied with your transition to management. Learn how to communicate more effectively and improve relationships with your colleagues. Realize an improved use of your time, resulting primarily from learning and practicing a number of "soft" skills which flow from developing the necessary attitudes for management. Use your newly acquired skills to solve immediate problems. Then, apply the six fundamental principles in your on-going work with engineering teams, and management.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Insights in Engineering Management.......2003-07-10

I found Dr. Aucoin's book "From Engineer to Manager: Mastering the Transition" to be incredibly insightful based on my 16+ years of experience, and plan to add this book to my personal library for future reference. I have been fortunate to have worked in multiple disciplines in the commercial nuclear power industry and can easily relate to Dr. Aucoin's topics and perspectives. The wealth of information in this book "hits the nail on the head" time and time again. Not only does Dr. Aucoin cover the technical bases extremely well, he also provides an in-depth perspective in understanding the complex aspects of managing human beings, beginning with being good managers of ourselves. This balanced approach will serve the aspiring engineering manager well in his or her career. Unlike many technical reads, "From Engineer to Manager" was an entertaining and truly enjoyable read.

          Book Description

The moving image is a significant part of graphic design, even discounting motion graphics on-line. But now this world is in turmoil. `Transitions' is the theme that runs through this book, which deals not only with technical and creative innovations at the cutting edge of this branch of graphic design, but the challenges facing the industry and the changes ahead. Moves and changes are the stock in trade of the motion graphic designer from one image or scene to the next and this book neatly takes the analogy and applies it globally to the discipline.

The availability of cheap, easy to use digital video equipment has enabled graphic designers to move into the world of film; On Screen In Time arrives at the point where digital media design and film making meet. Through interviews with leading practitioners across the world, the book focuses on transitions across the range of motion graphics, from Hollywood titles to experimental films on digital video, to interactive interfaces for digital TV. There is also a practical tutorial section.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR THE MOTION GRAPHICS PROFESSIONAL.......2007-01-04

There aren't many great books on the market for Motion Graphics professionals and this one is a 'must have'. I love the storyboards and conceptualization surrounding each project. It's a really great collection of work that should inspire any designer.

1 out of 5 stars not the way I accepted.......2006-03-18

Got the book in bad condition, the cover was ripped, the pages were crumpled . Another thing is my fault of not noticing that it is an old book (in design years, so I wasnt updated as I hoped fo)

          Thank you, Oren

2 out of 5 stars Does not go in depth enough.......2005-09-19

I read some glowing reviews about this book at Amazon, so when I received it and found out it was like a coffee table book I was disappointed. I expected it to delve deeper into the thought processes of the artists, but unfortunately too many selections remain on the surface.

          5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2003-06-20

There are loads of useful books on motion graphics, but this one is not only useful/helpful, but highly enjoyable -- and inspiring. The writing is wonderful and the images are beautifully done, but the interviews really make this book stand out.

On Screen In Time is a gem -- I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for the Eye & Mind.......2003-06-12

I have been collecting design books for over 20 years and motion graphics is one area of design that has been incredibly underrepresented in print. Sure, there are lots of books on how to use Final Cut or After Effects, but few and far between showcasing the best work being done in the industry. Goux & Houff have done an amazing job of representing the moving in still images. The book is beautifully designed and jam packed with eye candy - every page an inspiration. This book is a must have if you are interested in the field of motion graphics. Use it to give yourself a break from all those mind-numbing tutorials. Oh, and did I mention I want to be Elaine Cantwell...
