This textbook develops the foundations of Lewis- and Pauling-like localized structural and hybridization concepts to present the first modernized overview of chemical valency and bonding theory. Directly based on current computational technology, it serves as both a general textbook exposition of modern Lewis, hybridization, and resonance concepts and a comprehensive compilation of NBO-based bonding descriptors--for prototype molecular and supramolecular organic and inorganic species.

    Download Description

This graduate level text presents the first comprehensive overview of modern chemical valency and bonding theory, written by internationally recognised experts in the field. The authors build on the foundation of Lewis- and Pauling-like localized structural and hybridization concepts to present a book that is directly based on current ab-initio computational technology. The presentation is highly visual and intuitive throughout, based on the recognizable and transferable graphical forms of natural bond orbitals (NBOs) and their spatial overlaps in the molecular environment. The book shows applications to a broad range of molecular and supramolecular species of organic, inorganic and bioorganic interest. Hundreds of orbital illustrations help to convey the essence of modern NBO concepts for those with no extensive background in the mathematical machinery of the Schr

      Book Description

Because of the importance of the hydrogen bond, there have been scores of insights gained about its fundamental nature by quantum chemical computations over the years. Such methods can probe subtle characteristics of the electronic structure and examine regions of the potential energy surface that are simply not accessible by experimental means. The maturation of the techniques, codes, and computer hardware have permitted calculations of unprecedented reliability and rivaling the accuracy of experimental data. This book strives first toward an appreciation of the power of quantum chemistry to analyze the deepest roots of the hydrogen bond phenomenon. It offers a systematic and understandable account of decades of such calculations, focusing on the most important findings. This book provides readers with the tools to understand the original literature, and to perhaps carry out some calculations of their very own on systems of interest.

      Book Description

With the goal of helping students develop a good intuition for organic chemistry, it approaches the material from a mechanistic viewpoint. Presents twenty electron flow pathways as the building blocks of all the common mechanistic processes. Thus, students deal with a smaller number of reactant classes instead of studying each reaction as a separate case. Uses physical models such as energy surfaces to aid the decision-making process; includes a unique chapter that teaches students how to make a multivariable decision; and contains advanced explanations using interaction diagrams and molecular orbital theory.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! (and tiny, too).......2007-02-08

This book manages to fit almost the whole of O-Chem between it's shiny covers. It is the perfect O-Chem handbook/reference guide. A novice may need an additional supplementary text, but otherwise this book is a goldmine.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Organic Text and Reference.......1999-12-28

Dr. Paul Scudder was my undergraduate organic chemistry teacher at New College of USF in Sarasota, FL. His book continues to sit on my shelf even now, as I am working on my Ph.D. in synthetic medicinal chemistry. We used it along with Dr. Seyhan Ege's undergraduate Organic Chemistry text, which is a traditional "white-pages" type of organic text. His class was the best class I took in my entire four years of college, and I cannot recommend his book highly enough to anyone who truly wishes to gain a fundamental understanding of organic chemistry principles. It was a tremendous help to me both in college, as well as in grad school while preparing for my qualifiers. The book is written at a level that is accessible to college underclassmen, but it is also useful for upper level undergraduate and graduate students who would like to review important organic chemistry concepts or see the concepts presented in a new, easy to assimilate, way. His 3-D reaction coordinate graphs, pathway decision cubes, and pathway classification schemes are some of the strongest points of the book. He also presents some advanced theories such as HOMO-LUMO and HSAB theories that are often not really taught to undergraduates, and these are extremely well-done and easy to follow. Dr. Scudder has great passion for his subject, and that is apparent in his book.

The few minor and petty problems with the book that I can think of are that he assumes that the reader has some previous organic background knowledge, the writing is sometimes choppy and jumps around, and the graphics are not state-of-the-art, as he did them himself. Chapter 2, on thermodynamics and kinetics, is especially difficult to follow for someone who has no knowledge about these subjects.

5 out of 5 stars indispensable tool for organic chemistry students-all levels.......1999-02-21

A superb, well-organized classification of organic chemistry for practitioners at all levels. Clear, concise, with a large number of charts and graphs, some of which are indispensable. A handbook which boils down most of what you need to know to understand a wide spectrum of organic reaction mechanisms. Reminds me of the Washington University medical manual series, which filtered all the medical knowledge of each subspecialty essential for daily use into a single pocket handbook.

5 out of 5 stars A revolutionary way of approaching organic chemistry.......1999-01-31

Paul Scudder approaches organic chemistry from a completely different angle. While most organic books stress that a student memorize hundreds of seemingly unrelated reactions, this text is different. It teaches you the tools to classify organic reactions and solve them logically. This book and its method should be the standard for how organic chemistry is taught.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-03-04

This book starts with the fundamentals of atomic structure and then builds on them until molecular orbital theory. Molecular orbital theory is developed for both organic and inorganic substances. Molecular orbital theory is used to explain the electronic structure of molecules, which is, of course, of fundamental importance to the chemist.

Bonding theories for organic and inorganic models are developed and a brief treatment is given on the solid state at the end of the book.

This is a book that I often use as a reference. This book is versatile enough to refresh the chemist about bonding ideas in both organic and inorganic areas. It is not a particularly advanced book, but it was a pleasure for me to read and a good book to remind me of the basics when I need it.

      5 out of 5 stars excellent!!!.......2004-03-19

one of the best books in structure and bonding. the section on valence bond theory and photoelectronic spectra is excellent.. the writing is highly understandable and rarely confusing. highly recommended supplement for any inorganic chemistry
      textbook.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and Succinct Treatment of Chemical Bonding.......2000-08-24

This book was selected as one of the few textbooks for my undergraduate inorganic chemistry course. It discusses the concepts of atomic structure, atomic and molecular properties, molecular orbital theory, electronic structures, and frontier orbital theory in a very understandable and succinct way. The concepts and relationship between structure and bonding is built up progressively throughout the text. The fundamental concepts of bonding ideas that lead to the development of MO theory is discussed in a very logical manner, with applications to transition-metal complexes, solids, and liquids. Every chemistry student shall find this text very useful in explaining the essence of chemical bonding. It explains topics and aspects of chemical bonding about which general chemistry textbooks tell you not to worry about for the moment.

4 out of 5 stars A first modern look at atoms and molecules........1999-03-16

The text is well written and racional. It gives a clear view about how the structure of the aotms is, and, how the bonding between atoms process. On quantum mechanics topics I felt it was rather expositive than explanatory...

        Book Description

The Hydrogen Bond and the Water Molecule offers a synthesis of what is known and currently being researched on the topic of hydrogen bonds and water molecules. The most simple water molecular, H2O, is a fascinating but poorly understood molecule. Its unique ability to attract an exceptionally large number of hydrogen bonds induces the formation of a dense "hydrogen bond network" that has the potential to modify the properties of the surrounding molecules and their reactivities. The crucial role that water molecules play is described in this book. The author begins by providing an overview of the thermodynamical and structural properties of H-bonds before examining their much less known dynamical properties, which makes them appear as centres of reactivity. Methods used to observe these components are also reviewed. In the second part of the book the role played by the dense H-bond network developed by H2O molecules is examined. First in ice, where it has important atmospheric consequences, then in liquid water, and finally in macromolecules where it sheds some original light on the fundamental question "How is it that without water and hydrogen bonds life would not exist?".
This book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of physics, chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology. It can also serve as a teaching aid for students attending course in chemical physics, chemistry or molecular biology. Engineers involved the water industry would benefit from reading this book, as would scientists working in pharmaceutics, cosmetics and materials.

        * overview of what is known and being researched on the topic of hydrogen bonds and water molecules
        * reviews methods used to observe interactions between water molecules and hydrogen bonds
        * examines role of H-bond network developed by H2O molecules

          Book Description

This unique book shows how chemistry and physics come together in the solid state and on surfaces. Using a lively, graphic, descriptive approach, it teaches chemists the language that is necessary to understand the electronic structure of extended systems. And, at the same time, it demonstrates how a chemical, frontier-orbital, approach to solid state and surface bonding and reactivity may be constructed.

The book begins with the language of crystal orbitals, band structures and densities of states. The tools for moving back from the highly delocalized orbitals of the solid are then built up in a transparent manner; they include decompositions of the densities of states and crystal orbital overlap populations. Using these tools, the book shapes a meeting ground between detailed quantum mechanical calculations and a chemical frontier orbital perspec- tive. Applications include a general picture of chemisorption, bond-breaking and making in the solid state, bonding in metals, the electronic structure of selected conducting and supercon- ducting structures, dissociation, migration and coupling on surfaces and the forces controlling deformation of extended systems.

It's easy to understand (because it's so well written), also for physicists although it is written for chemists (I barely know anything about chemistry, but I understood everything). The book teaches you the most important things you need to know to understand bonds qualitatively and also e.g. the related shifts in energy, charge transfers,... However people working in the field of chemistry or physics shouldn't bother to buy this book because they'll probably have access to the papers this book is based upon. The most important of these papers is:

          R. Hoffmann, A chemical and theoretical way to look at bonding on surfaces, Rev. Mod. Phys. 60, 601-628 (1988).

This is a very interesting article that you definitely should read.

This is simply the funniest and most enjoyable book on theoretical inorganic chemistry I've ever read. Its format is close to your typical bedside table novel, lively informal and packed with the most awesome qualitative insights on bonding with molecular orbital theory without the need to resort to hardcore mathematics. It also has some amusing puns and jokes mixed with the enthusiasm of conveying this knowledge. The more interested reader should also read Jeremy Burdett's "Chemical Bonding in Solids" for a more detailed account of the quantum chemical and solid state aspects involved. All in all 140 pages of pure pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars A straightforward, visual examination of a difficult subject.......2000-06-21

This book bridges the language gap between chemistry and condensed matter physics. Starting from the language that all chemists are comfortable with - that of molecular orbitals - Hoffman builds up the idea of bonding in extended structures (solids) as if a solid was just a giant molecule. This is done with a minimum of mathematics, mostly using simple and graphical representation. As a primer to the area of solid state chemistry, this book is invaluable.

I'm not sure if physicists, starting from the other end of the language will find it as useful as a chemist, but it should be straightforward for them as well, giving them the chemist's point of view (language).

This is a short book, and wisely does not try to exceed its boundries, that of an introduction/overview. For a more mathematical treatment, I would suggest Burdett's "Chemical Bonding in Solids." If you only want an introduction written in plain language with lots of graphics, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Every chemist needs to read this!.......2000-02-17

This book bridges a gap between molecular orbital theory and the empirical/intuitive way chemists think about bonding in molecules. From there, it opens up vistas in extended systems (e.g. solids, conductive polymers) that most ordinary "molecular" chemists think of as foreign and forbidding because the language and tools used to treat them are those of solid state physicists with which most chemists are (regrettably) unfamiliar. Hoffmann brings all this good stuff home to chemists, without the bludgeon of complicated mathematics, inviting us in, showing us how much we already know. My own background is both physics and traditional synthetic organic/organometallic chemistry. Until I read this book, I had struggled to see how the physics and chemistry meet. This book has really bridged the gap.

            Book Description

Hydrogen bonds range from the very strong, comparable with covalent bonds, to the very weak, comparable with van der Waals forces. Most hydrogen bonds are weak attractions with a binding strength about one-tenth of that of a normal covalent bond. Nevertheless, they are very important. Without
them, all wooden structures would collapse, cement would crumble, oceans would vaporize, and all living things would disintegrate into inanimate matter.
An easy-to-read supplement to the often brief descriptions of hydrogen bonding found in most undergraduate chemistry and molecular biology textbooks, An Introduction to Hydrogen Bonding describes and discusses the current ideas concerning hydrogen bonding, ranging from the very strong to the
very weak, with introductions to the experimental and theoretical methods involved. Ideal for courses in chemistry and biochemistry, it will also be useful for structural biology and crystallography courses. For students and researchers interested in supramolecular chemistry, biological structure
and recognition, and other sophisticated concepts and methodologies, it provides a careful selection of key references from the vast hydrogen bonding literature.
