Book Description
Dean Rood A Practical Guide to the Care, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting of Capillary Gas Chromatographic Systems Third, Revised Edition The field of gas chromatography continues the evolutionary process. This is well demonstrated by the continuous series of developments in columns, equipment, apparatus, techniques, and applications that have occured since the publication of the first edition of this very successful offering. Problems experienced by users differ from case to case, and these differences sometimes necessitate different approaches to care, maintenance, and trouble-shooting. This book is intended for the average GC user and not for those whose entire life revolves around capillary gas chromatography. The topics covered within these pages are based on the most common problems, questions, and misconceptions about capillary gas chromatography. These topics have been assembled and presented in a unique, practical, and concise format suitable even for the most inexperienced user. The author has not changed his successful approach to the topic in the present third edition. Instead, he has focused on updating and correcting the text of the widely acclaimed second edition.
Customer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Modern Practice of GC.......2007-09-21
This book is an excelent reference source for all aspects of modern GC analysis. It covers topics in great depth but is still easy to read for less expirienced chromatographers. The important parameters are covered in depth (column, optimization, inlet systems) providing enough information to solve most problems. The end of the book has several chapters on application specific techniques such as pharmaceutical or petrochemical analysis. You will probably learn more from this book then you would taking a short course on the subject, and the cost is much less.
Fantastic Resource.......2006-07-22
I work in an analytical lab and usually borrow my texts from the Univ. of WA library in Tacoma rather than have my corporation buy them. This text is easy to read and comprehensive. I showed it to our senior scientist asking if our company should buy this text instead of borrowing it. He looked through it and said yes, that it's always good to have good references.
Great reference book.......2001-04-15
One of the most useful reference book in gas chromatography. The book is written in a fashion that is easy to understand by novice and experienced chromatographers. Wonderful details about mechanism of separations, valuable information on flash vapourization process, and the utilities of the various detectors. All in all, a must have book for those who seriously like to be good in gas chromatography
Excellent in-depth source for chromatographers.......1997-07-31
This book is comprehensive and comprehensible. The information presented is quite current. An excellent job was done updating for the latest edition. The references listed appear thorough, allowing for further investigation of a particular subject of interest. Good balance of theoretical explanation, and also inclusion of commercially available technology. Highly recommended

Book Description
A unique practical guide to building, using, and maintaining a complete GC/MS system.
Though gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is one of the most effective and popular methods of separating, identifying, and quantifying compounds in complex mixtures, there have been no comprehensive handbooks to date that clearly explain the setup and maintenance of a functional GC/MS system. Now Marvin and Christopher McMaster have created the hands-on resource that researchers and students need to get their own systems up and running quickly. Covering everything from necessary components to tuning, troubleshooting, and processing data, it allows even those with little prior knowledge of GC/MS to perform their own analyses and gather the data they require. GC/MS: A Practical User's Guide contains:
* Full coverage of vital equipment, including the function, costs, and advantages of both desktop and floor-standing systems
* A walkthrough of a basic GC/MS analysis and an examination of key methods of structural data interpretation
* Extensive information on GC/MS system optimization
* An exploration of the various research and environmental uses of GC/MS systems
* An extended section on liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry to enhance comprehension of the gas method.
For organic, analytical, clinical, environmental, and forensic chemists in all types of laboratories-and for students in all of these specialties -this book will be an invaluable companion for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction to GC-MS.......2002-01-02
GC/MS should be helpful to the novice or student who has never used GC-MS before and who has had minimal experience with GC. It is a little disappointing that about 20% of the text covers material about GC that any experienced GC user should already know.
The book contains an easy to understand explanation about how a mass spectrometer works. Some additional details or diagrams could have clarified the description of how the DC/RF field separates the mass fragments in the quadrupole analyzer; but otherwise the text is crystal clear. Information about tuning and maintaining the mass spectrometer is well presented and the authors provide some helpful suggestions including a way to tell during the tuning process that the source needs cleaning. More information about spectral interpretation would have been appreciated but is probably outside the scope of the book.
This book belongs on the library shelves of colleges with undergraduate chemistry programs and would be helpful in industrial and environmental laboratories as an introduction for chemists and technicians new to the field.
Fantastic list of tips for a GC/MS user.......2000-02-13
The book may be considered difficult for a starting user. I have been working with GC/MS for 10 years and the coments and all explanations inside are really and absolutely useful. Unfortunately I had not such a book when I was starting to deal with this technique.

ASIN: 0471172618 |
Book Description
Gas Chromatography (GC) is undoubtedly the most widely used technique for the separation and analysis of volatile compounds. Yet comprehensive guides to contemporary GC theory and practice are surprisingly hard to find.
Basic Gas Chromatography fills this significant void in the GC literature. Written by two well-known practitioners and educators in GC, it offers thorough coverage of the basic principles and techniques of modern gas chromatography.
Designed to serve as a primer/working reference for bench chemists and as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, it presents the fundamentals in a straightforward and logical fashion. Theoretical issues are explained without complicated equations and derivations and always in terms of how they relate to practical operating principles. Timely, comprehensive, and accessible, Basic Gas Chromatography:
* Provides a balanced presentation of theory and practice
* Includes both capillary column and packed column chromatography
* Uses the new IUPAC terms throughout, cross-referenced to traditional terms and symbols
* Offers a wealth of helpful hints, step-by-step guidelines, and trouble-shooting tips
* Briefly covers GC-MS, headspace analysis, chiral analysis, solid phase microextraction, and other cutting-edge topics.
Customer Reviews:
a good primer.......2007-05-17
An excellent primer on the subject. If you're thinking of bringing GC into your lab, or are just brushing up on the subject, this is the book for you. Some of the derivations focused on quantitative analysis are a bit pedantic and might not be applicable to the average user, but overall the book is a good balance between practice and theory.
helpful.......2006-11-10
good information about all type of GC. Description and techniques instructions. It's a general book, so you'll not find deep information of a typical GC.
Excellent primer for GC.......2000-11-14
A very good reference for those who just start to learn gas chromatography. The book was written in a format that make it easy to understand with more emphasis on the practical side rather than theoretical treatment for GC. After 40 years of intensive development, gas chromatography is still a very formidable technique.
