Book Description
The peroral application (swallowing) of a medicine means that the body must first resorb the active substance before it can begin to take effect. The efficacy of drug uptake depends on the one hand on the chemical characteristics of the active substance, above all on its solubility and membrane permeability. On the other hand, it is determined by the organism's ability to absorb pharmaceuticals by way of specific transport proteins or to excrete them. Since many pharmacologically active substances are poorly suited for oral intake, a decisive criterion for the efficacy of a medicine is its so-called bioavailability.
Written by an international team from academia and the pharmaceutical industry, this book covers all aspects of the oral bioavailability of medicines. The focus is placed on methods for determining the parameters relevant to bioavailability. These range from modern physicochemical techniques via biological studies in vitro and in vivo right up to computer-aided predictions. The authors specifically address possibilities for optimizing bioavailability during the early screening stage for the active substance.
Its clear structure and comprehensive coverage make this book equally suitable for researchers and lecturers in industry and teaching.

Book Description
AN AUTHORITATIIVE, UP-TO-DATE INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL ACOUSTICS
Easy to read and understand, Fundamentals of Physical Acoustics fills a long-standing need for an acoustics text that challenges but does not overpower graduate students in engineering and physics. Mathematical results and physical explanations go hand in hand, and a unique feature of the book is the balance it strikes between time-domain and frequency-domain presentations.
Fundamentals of Physical Acoustics is intended for a two-semester, first-year graduate course, but is also suitable for advanced undergraduates. Emphasis on plane waves in the first part of the book keeps the mathematics simple yet accommodates a broad range of topics: propagation, reflection and transmission, normal modes and simple waveguides for rectilinear geometries, horns, inhomogeneous media, and sound absorption and dispersion.
The second part of the book is devoted to a more rigorous development of the wave equation, spherical and cylindrical waves (including the more advanced mathematics required), advanced waveguides, baffled piston radiation, diffraction (treated in the time domain), and arrays. Applications and examples are drawn from:
- Atmospheric acoustics
- Noise control
- Underwater acoustics
- Engineering acoustics
- Acoustical measurements
Supplemented with more than 300 graphs and figures as well as copious end-of-chapter problems, Fundamentals of Physical Acoustics is also an excellent professional reference for engineers and scientists.

Not finished yet........2007-08-23
Having only got through the first few pages I can say that it is well written and written in a style that explains everything clearly.
No complaints at all.
A fairly practical book for a complex topic.......2006-12-07
I knew I liked this book when I read section C of the introduction:
"How is the wave equation derived? Three common physical systems that carry waves - the electrical transmission line, the flexible string, and the compressible fluid - are considered in this section."
I needed a practical book to help me when I somehow volunteered myself to perform some acoustic experiments at work. They kind of said "Hey, you're a physicist. Can you do this?" And then I said "Uh... sure." I read through what I could find in Halliday and Resnick, a book I like for its simplicity. But then I needed something more complicated, so I bought Morse and Ingard, which was way too much. Then I found this book.
And its a good thing I did. The book uses the wave equation to solve each of these problems, and if you pay attention, you can assemble a nice, general approach to solving problems of this nature, and you'll have a list of analogous variables when you're done. The whole book is written like this. It's not an ASM Handbook by any means, but it is more practical than Morse and Ingard, has more drawings and diagrams, and I was surprised to find one of the cleanest, simplest descriptions of Bessel functions I've seen yet. The book addresses the complex problems without doing endless integrals, and it whenever possible it works through the problem and doesn't rely on phrases like "the reduction of step X to step Y is left as an exercise for the student" in its derivations. I appreciate this - it makes the book more friendly as a reference text.
Also, when I was a graduate student I never paid attention to literature references in text books because I (naively) considered them to be outdated. But a literature search is one of the best tools I have available to me in the working world - if you have access to a literature database, you will find the literature references at the end of some chapters to be very useful.
Consider it a useful reference text, and probably a practical textbook as well.
Best intro to acoustics for engineers especially.......2006-12-05
This book is geared towards graduate and upper undergraduate students in physics and engineering. The first nine chapters of the book are restricted to plane waves. Thus the first half of the book introduces the reader to a wide variety of acoustical concepts such as propagation, reflection, transmission, refraction, normal modes, horn theory, absorption, and dispersion. All the while, the first half of the book keeps mathematical complexity to a minimum. The second half of the book relies more on advanced mathematics and is a survey of advanced topics dependent on the reader understanding the first nine chapters of the book. For the second half of the book, it will be helpful if you know calculus as well as differential equations. Each chapter has plenty of exercises so you can practice what you've learned.
Although the coverage is not as broad as Kinser's book on acoustics, this book does a much better job of explaining the foundations of acoustics including the math, which can get quite involved. I really love how Blackstock makes use of figures when explaining concepts and adding in the mathematics to the figure explanation in a way that you will remember the material. My advice is that if you are looking for a good introduction to acoustics, this is the book to read. Once you conquer this and you want something broader that goes into such topics as nonlinear acoustics and underwater acoustics, you probably want to look at Kinsler's "Fundamentals of Acoustics". The following is the table of contents:
1. Introduction
2. Detailed Development of the Acoustical Wave Equation.
3. Reflection and Transmission of Normally Incident Plane Waves of Arbitrary Waveform.
4. Normal Incidence Continued: Steady-State Analysis.
5. Transmission Phenomena: Oblique Incidence.
6. Normal Modes in Cartesian Coordinates: Strings, Membranes, Rooms, and Rectangular Waveguides.
7. Horns.
8. Propagation in Stratified Media.
9. Propagation in Dissipative Fluids: Absorption and Dispersion.
10. Spherical Waves.
11. Cylindrical Waves.
12. Waveguides.
13. Radiation from a Baffled Piston.
14. Diffraction.
15. Arrays.
Wonderful Book.......2005-04-27
I think this is one of the best books on Physical Acoustics.
I would recommend this book to anyone starting to learn acoustics. This statement does not mean that advanced students should not go for this book, as it also covers advanced materials.
My opinion about the book can resumed as follows:
- Clear and concise
- Very good presentation
- Relatively easy to follow
- Very good for self-studying (plan to study the book is recommended by the author)
- There is a derivation (or instructions on how to get) to almost every equation in the book.
- Not too theoretical. Many practical interpretations of the mathematical results are given. (percentage of mathematics well balanced)
- The author makes apparently difficult material simple!
From this book one can jump to more advanced texts (Theoretical Acoustics by Morse and Ingard and Acoustics - An Introduction to its Physical Principles and Applications by Pierce).
Fundamentals of Acoustics by Kinsler et al is also a good book for a beginner, but I think this one is much better.
Moral of the story, I really like this book!
Ps: This is an opinion of a beginner on Physical Acoustics more interested in air applications, that never had lessons about this topic. I don't know if my opinion will change as my knowledge on this field increases:) I doubt it!
Excellent text and reference.......2000-06-13
I find this book clear and concise. This is the reference I use most often at work when I want insight into the physics behind a noise or vibration problem.

Book Description
Absorption and Scattering of Light by Small Particles
Treating absorption and scattering in equal measure, this self-contained, interdisciplinary study examines and illustrates how small particles absorb and scatter light. The authors emphasize that any discussion of the optical behavior of small particles is inseparable from a full understanding of the optical behavior of the parent material-bulk matter. To divorce one concept from the other is to render any study on scattering theory seriously incomplete.
Special features and important topics covered in this book include:
* Classical theories of optical properties based on idealized models
* Measurements for three representative materials: magnesium oxide, aluminum, and water
* An extensive discussion of electromagnetic theory
* Numerous exact and approximate solutions to various scattering problems
* Examples and applications from physics, astrophysics, atmospheric physics, and biophysics
* Some 500 references emphasizing work done since Kerker's 1969 work on scattering theory
* Computer programs for calculating scattering by spheres, coated spheres, and infinite cylinders
Customer Reviews:
Excellent text for Absorption and Scattering!.......2005-06-06
Bohren and Huffman present a coherent and comprehensive description of absorption and scattering by small particles. The text is written in a very amusing style, where ideas are presented in a conversation like manner, as if the authors are directly addressing the reader, providing jokes and examples to illustrate their point. This text builds upon the description provided by Hulst in classic text, and provides a deal of useful information particularly related to absorption (not covered by the text of Hulst)!
The first eight chapters illustrate the basic theory of scattering and absorption, introducing expression and physics relevant to spheres, spheroids and a whole array of particles. This section is quite similar in spirit to the text by Hulst, requires a background in electrodynamics (to make it most useful) . In part II and part III, the authors discuss the optical constants of bulk matter and small particles respectively, citing examples of metallic as well as semiconducting particles. This book fills the need for a textbook for studying extinction coefficients of all kinds of particles, and is useful for physicists, chemists, meteorologists, material scientists, etc. Nonlinear optics is not covered, as also the effect of multi-particle scattering (and thankfully so)!
The book is very useful for people studying absorption (and scattering) of nanoparticles. It contains a good description of basic physics of plasmon resonance, extremely relevant to the research of people studying metallic particles. Bohren has written some really amusing as well as insightful "science" books on experiments and observations of physical phenomenon in daily life (and atmospheric sciences). This book is similar, with additional detail in terms of mathematical equations:)! Extremely useful for researchers and scientists even remotely associated with studies of absorption and scattering by particles! In terms of usefulness, this book is much better than the text by Kerker on similar topic!
Excellent.......2003-02-15
Very good choice of topics. Clear presentation. Caters to a wide variety of audiences.
I'd give it a 5 if it included a chapter devoted practical aspects of experimental light scattering measurements, techniques, and instrumentation.
Very well written exposition, 1st-rate content........2000-11-09
The authors' lively and `user-friendly' style of presentation help bring material of an advanced nature within the reach of a larger number of readers than most books that deal with the subject at this level. I highly recommend this classic reference.
Excellent resource for motivated student or expert.......1999-06-29
I have found this to be a very useful reference for calculations of light-scattering properties of particles of various sizes and shapes. Discussions of subjects ranging from geometrical optics to Mie theory appear clear and complete. The book also includes computer algorithms for computing scattering properties of homogeneous spheres, coated spheres and cylinders.
One of the best books on light scattering........1998-09-07
This book must be on the table of every researcher in light scattering field.

Book Description
This book covers all major areas of interest in the rapidly expanding field of in vitro methods for percutaneous absorption studies. Specific areas discussed include diffusion cell design, receptor fluid, preparation of skin, and temperature. The book covers experimental methodology, as well as the underlying principles and fundamentals that help professionals and students gain an understanding of the basis for currently used methodology.
Customer Reviews:
Useful for experimental design...and more.......2000-01-05
'In Vitro Percutaneous Absorption' is a collection of papers by various researchers. It provides an insight into the skin absorption research community.
For experimental researchers, 'In Vitro PC' is useful for design and preparation of experiments. It is also useful in revealing common sources of experimental error.
For those not performing in vitro experiments, there are two chapters that are useful for understanding the mechanisms of percutaneous absorption, and how enhansors such as DMSO and azones work (both chapters are first rate). The chapter on the LPL Theory of skin penetration offers a concise, understandable concept of percutaneous absorption. The chapter on penetration enhansors details classes of enhansor chemicals and their mechnism of action. It also addresses synergy between enhansors, and efficy.
For those actively involved in percutaneous research this book will be readily understandable. The authors assume that the reader is familiar with much of the terminology, so those not in their field of study may find some chapters difficult to read.

Heat Conduction, 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0891162712 |
Book Description
This extensively revised 4th edition provides an up-to-date, comprehensive single source of information on the important subjects in engineering radiative heat transfer. It presents the subject in a progressive manner that is excellent for classroom use or self-study, and also provides an annotated reference to literature and research in the field. The foundations and methods for treating radiative heat transfer are developed in detail, and the methods are demonstrated and clarified by solving example problems. The examples are especially helpful for self-study. The treatment of spectral band properties of gases has been made current and the methods are described in detail and illustrated with examples. The combination of radiation with conduction and/or convection has been given more emphasis nad has been merged with results for radiation alone that serve as a limiting case; this increases practicality for energy transfer in translucent solids and fluids. A comprehensive catalog of configuration factors on the CD that is included with each book provides over 290 factors in algebraic or graphical form. Homework problems with answers are given in each chapter, and a detailed and carefully worked solution manual is available for instructors.
Customer Reviews:
Review of Siegel's Radiation Heat Transfer.......2006-03-22
Overall, good text for radiation heat transfer. Certain cases in radiation problems where the solution will involve some numerical technique are not emphasized enough in the example problems.
The Definative Book on Thermal Radiative Heat Transfer.......2003-01-30
Thermal Radiation Heat Transfer by Robert Siegel and John Howell is probably the ,most widely used text for graduate students and is the book I have probably used more than any other in my professional engineering career. Originally published in the 1960's as a NASA Special Publication (SP-164), this book has been significantly updated three times since its initial published in 1972. In this latest version of the book, the authors cover the standard radiation heat transfer topics, such as the Stefan-Boltzmann relation, blackbody radiation, the various forms of optical surfaces properties (emissivity, transmissivity, absorptivity, diffuse, specular and much more), and an enclosure analysis. Topics, which are often overlooked in other textbooks, such as gas radiation, scattering, multi-mode heat, the Maxwell relationships, are given a thorough examination in this book. Furthermore, this latest edition of the book includes a CD-ROM contains a catalog of 290 configuration factors in algebraic or graphical form, plus homework problems. Finally, if you are looking for an excellent textbook which covers almost aspects of radiation heat, this book is a must, especially for those people planning of a career in which is involved with heat transfer.
Great textbook, great reference book.......2002-03-07
This is fourth edition of excellent monograph that comprises all theoretical and computational problems of radiative heat transfer. In comparison with the previous edition, the book of R. Siegel and J. R. Howell is updated by the state-of-the-art material concerning the analysis of radiative heat transfer in absorbing, emitting, and scattering media, in semitransparent bodies, modern applications of Monte Carlo method etc. The book may serve a great textbook for university students, as well as a great reference book for all experts in radiation heat transfer. Accompanying CD-ROM with the catalog of radiation configuration factors (bibliographic rarity, up to a recent time available only on John Howell's web site) will be a reliable tool to everyone who deals with computation of radiation transfer within system of diffuse surfaces. I beleive this is a best book in its area (you may compare with the books of Sparrow & Cess or Modest)
Good, but misplaces the heat retention theory........1998-12-06
This book is scientifically applicable, but lacks certain validity concerning heat retention, and other various forms heat transfer. I would reccomend this book to anybody who is interested in thermodynamics, but a profound interest it must be, because for most, it may seem a little dry. I give it 2 stars, but I would have given it higher if it's theories had been more precise. Mr. Siegel obviously knows his thermodynamics , though, and it is a rather intriguing book, once you get into the more exciting thermal theories. A good book, all in all, and I hope Mr.Siegel authors other books that I may be able to obtain.
