Fluid Flow Handbook.......2004-04-20
Excellent book as a reference. Many fluid flow topics
Book Description
In the last few years there has been significant progress in the development of microfluidics and nanofluidics at the application as well as at the fundamental and simulation levels. This book provides a comprehensive summary of these changes describing fluid flow in micro and nano configurations. Where as in their previous book entitled Microflows: Fundamentals and Simulation the authors covered scales from one hundred nanometers to microns (and beyond), in this new book they discuss length scales from angstroms to microns (and beyond). While still maintaining the emphasis on fundamental concepts with a mix of semianalytical, experimental, and numerical results, this book outlines their relevance to modeling and analyzing functional devices.
The text has been divided into three main subject categories: gas flows; liquid flows; and simulation techniques. The majority of the completely new developments in this book are in liquid flows and simulation techniques chapters with modified information throughout the rest of the book.
This book can be used in a two-semester graduate course. Also, selected chapters can be used for a short course or an undergraduate-level course. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in fluid mechanics, physics, and in electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering.
Review of earlier volume:
Applied Mechanics, 2002: "Among recent books that addressed the physics of micro devices, the present one ... is perhaps the best of the bunch. ... Microflows: Fundamentals and Simulation has a lot to offer and is certainly recommended as a good place to start for MEMS students interested in flow physics."
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book on Micro and Nanoscale flows.......2005-12-02
I believe this is an excellent reference for anyone interested in the field of microfluidics and nanofluidics. When I got the first edition, I was always thinking that the addition of a few chapters on nanoscale fluid flows would make this book a comprehensive monograph for people who have background in conventional fluid mechanics and want to understand the micron and submicron fluid flows phenomena. The authors have done this in the new edition "current edition". It is a well-organized book that makes it easy for reader, especially for graduate students who want to start their research in MEMS and NEMS and for professors who are looking for a reference for their course. The book covers all aspects of micro and nanoflows in terms of their characteristics, scaling effects, and methodologies and approaches that can be used for modified continuum and molecular simulations.
The Book on MicroFlows.......2002-06-07
I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to read the manuscript of this book about a year before it was published. I was looking for a source of general information on fluid issues in MEMS in order to acquaint myself with the subject. Even though many research papers are out there, the new reader to the field needs to be given a solid starting point. Being a well-written research monograph, this is that solid starting point for those who have a grasp of traditional fluid mechanics and want to enhance that understanding for research into MEMS devices and flows encountered at micron scale and below.
Now that the book is printed, I used it as the main source of reading for an Indep. Study course for a graduate student who started his PhD studies recently.
The book also provides a wealth of references that will assist the reader to get a deeper understanding of the specific subject.
Review of Microflows.......2002-02-12
This is an excellent book and I recommend this to any one interested in microfluidics, MEMS or nanotechnology. To my knowledge, this is the first book on microfluidics. The chapters on gas flows, electrokinetically driven liquid flows and on numerical methods for continuum and atomistic simulation are very interesting.
Book Description
This is a textbook for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering. The book emphasizes understanding CFD through physical principles and examples. The author follows a consistent philosophy of control volume formulation of the fundamental laws of fluid motion and energy transfer, and introduces a novel notion of 'smoothing pressure correction' for solution of flow equations on collocated grids within the framework of the well-known SIMPLE algorithm. The subject matter is developed by considering pure conduction/diffusion, convective transport in 2-dimensional boundary layers and in fully elliptic flow situations and phase-change problems in succession. The book includes chapters on discretization of equations for transport of mass, momentum and energy on Cartesian, structured curvilinear and unstructured meshes, solution of discretised equations, numerical grid generation and convergence enhancement. Practicing engineers will find this particularly useful for reference and for continuing education.

Fantastic introductory treatment of CFD.......2007-04-27
This book is a must-read for any practicing engineer who needs to come up to speed on the basic techniques of CFD quickly. It provides enough information for one to start writing code to model operating equipment with confidence. A second excellent book on this topic is referred to by Date as well: "Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow" by Patankar.
Excellent book for both students and practitioners.......2005-10-18
During my final year project in CFD at IIT, I went through a number of books on Introduction to the topic. Among all of them, I think this is the best book from the point of view of students. This is an exceptional book for an introductory course in CFD. This book helps a student make the transition from analytical solutions to numerical methods easier. A lot of books on the subject tend to lose the physics part and divert to numerical analysis totally. To familiarize the reader with grid generation, both structured and unstructured grids have been covered in detail. Sufficient example code has also been provided in the appendix.

Book Description
Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques are basic and valuable tools in various scientific and engineering disciplines. They allow us to see the invisible: the optical inhomogeneities in transparent media like air, water, and glass that otherwise cause only ghostly distortions of our normal vision.
These techniques are discussed briefly in many books and papers, but there is no up-to-date complete treatment of the subject before now. The book is intended as a practical guide for those who want to use these methods, as well as a resource for a broad range of disciplines where scientific visualization is important. The colorful 400-year history of these methods is covered in an extensive introductory chapter accessible to all readers.
Customer Reviews:
A visual approach to optics........2007-01-03
This is well written book full of great descriptions and lovely pictures. It was a pleasure to read. Even my non-technical colleagues enjoyed the illustrations. The description of the historical development of the technique is very interesting, and the length is about right. The section on experimental technique has more than sufficient detail. The only shortcoming is in practical examples. While there are several detailed descriptions of setting up systems, it would have been helpful to give outlines of alternative setups. More detail on ways of diagnosing and resolving problems in the setup would also have been helpful.
An excellent written book.......2003-06-29
The book is comprehensive, well arranged, very informative and instructive to the topics. The first modern publication which records in detail all tried and tested methods, well illustrated by many photos and diagrams. The Historical Review with Robert Hooke's (1635-1703) very first serious observations of Schlieren, the Basic Concepts and the extensive descriptions of to-days Practical Applications, such as Large-Field and Focusing Schlieren Methods, or Outdor Schlieren and Shadowgraphy for Aircraft in Flight, are examples out of the wide spread Table of Contents. The book is recommendable equally for experts and beginners. Scientists, development- and production-engineers, as well as students will gain advantage from it. Instructions for making a "do it yourself" Schlierenequipment, are given. It concludes with an extensive Bibliography.
An excellent collection on Qualitative Optical Tecniques.......2002-06-28
The book titled "Schlieren and Shadowgraph Techniques" nicely elaborates the optical techniques mainly Shadography and Schlieren as far as Qualitative applications of the same are concerned. The details given are quite helpful and self explanatory for the researchers of this field.
The book is full in all respects except the quantitative analysis of these two optical techniques. The author has given the priliminary steps of quantitative analysis but has not gone deep into them which is equally important as is qualitative analysis. For example, how to extract velocity feilds, concentration fields (in case of mass transfer problems) etc from schlieren and shadowgraph images are still not discussed in detail in the book, which should have been included to make it a complete source of information.
This is the major suggestion that I want to make so that in the further editions these aspects can be looked into.
Review of Schlieren and Shadowgraph Techniques.......2002-04-20
This book has a wonderfully detailed historical review of these important techniques. While numerous papers have been written on the subject, and numerous technical books have briefly discussed the material, this is the first comprehensive modern book on the subject. The book is very detailed and comprehensive and even gives possible future directions to the topic. Actual operating details are described, including methods for making simple systems.

An Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The Finite Volume Method (2nd Edition)
ASIN: 0471498432 |
Book Description
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is concerned with the efficient numerical solution of the partial differential equations that describe fluid dynamics, and CFD techniques are commonly used in many areas of engineering where fluid behavior is a factor. This book covers the range of topics required for a thorough study and understanding of CFD.
Book Description
Turbulent flow is a most important branch of fluid dynamics yet its complexity has tended to make it one of the least understood. Empirical data have been appearing rapidly for more than twenty years but a consistent theory of turbulent flow based on the results has been lacking. The original edition of Dr Townsend’s book was the first to attempt a systematic and comprehensive discussion of all kinds of turbulent motion and to provide a reliable analysis of the processes which occur. The theory and associated concepts are applied to the description of a variety of flows: free turbulent flows such as wakes and jets, wall flows in pipes and boundary layers, flows affected by buoyancy forces such as heat plumes and the atmospheric boundary layer and flows with curved streamlines. This monograph will appeal to practitioners and researchers in engineering, meteorology, oceanography, physics and applied mathematics. This paperback edition was first issued in hard covers in 1976 as a complete revision, taking into account developments since 1955, of the first edition. It will be useful as an advanced text in applied mathematics, and the other disciplines mentioned above.

Understanding Rheology (Topics in Chemical Engineering)
ASIN: 0198564732 |
Book Description
This book sets out to provide a guide, with examples, for those who wish to make predictions about the mechanical and thermal behaviour of non-Newtonian materials in engineering and processing technology. After an introductory survey of the field and a review of basic continuum mechanics, the radical differences between elongational and shear behaviour are shown. Two chapters, one based on a continuum approach and the other using microstructural approaches, lead to useful mathematical desriptions of materials for engineering applications. As examples of nearly-viscometric and nearly-elongational flows, there is a discussion of lubrication and related shearing flows, and fibre- spinning and film-blowing respectively. A long chapter is devoted to the important new field of computational rheology, and this is followed by chapters on stability and turbulence and the all-important temperature effects in flow. This new edition contains much new material not available in book form elsewhere-for example wall slip, suspension rheology, computational rheology and new results in stability theory.

Book Description
This book is written mainly for students of meteorology and other specializations of atmospheric science who have had no previous experience in the subject, but basic knowledge of hydrodynamics is assumed. It introduces turbulence theory and modeling related to the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer and includes methods for predicting the impact of industrial activities. The problems and examples have been selected with the intention of broadening the student's understanding of the atmosphere as well as his or her understanding of basic mathematics and the scientific method. In the final appendices the author discusses two models that students can run on a PC. Disks accompanying the book contain the supplementary computer programs.
Book Description
The book is the only one of its kind devoted entirely to the subject of Large Eddy Simulation. It presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids. The topics are well chosen and both the mathematical ideas and the applications are presented with care. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. This second edition is a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters are devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier--Stokes equations.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book!!.......2007-07-12
Great Job, this book is good, but is very tiring. Because the subject is extensive.
Thank you!!
An atlas of large-eddy simulation.......2006-06-02
This book presents the current status of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and is invaluable for anyone working on the field.
The author presents all relevant subgrid scale models, the theoretical basis of the method, lessons from practical cases, etc
It is no accident that this is the 3rd revision in 4 years, collecting forewords from leading theoreticians along the way: Germano, Lesieur and Meneveau.
