Book Description
Forensic Pathology: Principles and Practice is an extensively illustrated reference book that contains more than 1800 color photographs accompanied by well-considered text that thoroughly explains representative topics, and also provides abundant, up-to-date references for further reading. This well-written volume uses a case-oriented format to address, explain and guide the reader through the varied topics encountered by forensic pathologists. It will benefit not only the experienced forensic pathologist, but also the hospital pathologist who occasionally performs medicolegal autopsies. Doctors in training and those law enforcement officials investigating the broad spectrum of sudden, unexpected and violent deaths that may fall within the jurisdiction of medicolegal death investigators will also find this an invaluable resource.
* Large, colorful photographs which beautifully illustrate the concepts outlined in the text.
* Sample descriptions of pathological lesions which serve to aid pathologists in reporting their findings to law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and others involved in investigations of sudden death.
* 'Do and Don't' sections at the end of each chapter which provide guidance for handling the types of cases examined within preceding sections.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!!!!!.......2006-11-04
This book is really helpful. It covers a wide range of forensics pathology topics and provides rich and detailed information on these topics. It can be used as a "forensics pathology for dummies" book as well as a reference book for confirmed pathologists.
And last but not least, it is full of very good color pictures (forget the usual black and white pics which provide poor information, color pictures are so realistic and so much better!), and generally speaking its look and feels are very pleasant.
An amazing book.......2005-05-30
It is just unbelieveable. The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. The authours have stressed in almost all chapters of the limitations of the findings. This is admirable.Training as a forensic physician and a lawyer, this book is of great help.

Poor Explanations, Nothing You Can't Get Elsewhere.......2006-01-07
I bought this book in 2000 because I was going back into consulting and needed to augment my quick-reference books. Contractors are paid by the hour! This book helped me solved exactly one problem. I did not write an editorial then because I hoped I would find out that I was wrong in my initial assessment. Everything else I could solve using various chemical engineering PE preparation material. This is stuff I either collected and condensed or got from other text. If you want a better choice refer to Randall Robinson's "Chemical Engineering Reference Manual." My main complaint about this book, besides that it digs deeper ruts in a well-worn trail is that the explanations are missing steps. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
Post Script
Other choices for the consulting chemical engineer include: Hicks, "Handbook of Engineering Calculations;" Coulson and Richardson's "Chemical Engineering Design, vol. 6;" Ludwig's series "Applied Process Design for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants," Stanley Walas's "Chemical Process Equipment, Selection and Design," and, Schweitzer's "Handbook of Separation Techniques for Chemical Engineers." Schweitzer has gotten quite expensive at $300 but I have an earlier edition and I doubt if it has been upgraded much. The Ludwig series is very expensive and not commendable to quick calculations. Coulson is useful for its short comparisons of unit operation methods while Hicks is good for everyday calculations. Walas is a good reference but its detail falls somewhat short, between Hicks and Ludwig. There are other books that may be useful but you will probably find, as I have, that it is a hit and miss proposition.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote -- Thanks.
Watch Out.......2005-10-16
The Redlich-Kwong equation given specific for pressure given in this text is in error. It should be:
P=(RT/(V-b))-(a/((Tr^.5)*V*(V+b)))
The procedure given for calculating specific volume is accurate as far as I know and I've been told that it is. The original equation of state is not stated correctly though which would affect a simple calculation for pressure such as in a pressure vessel given temperature and density of enclosed gas.
Nice step-by-step examples for various calculations.......2000-06-09
As a chemical engineer, this book rates up there with Perry's on value of information. Chopey does a very nice job of including detailed step-by-step calculations for a multitude of subjects. The many examples are very relevant to the text and provide good insight to the calculation process. The book is very well organized and easy to use.

This text give a top to bottom account of model building via RSM. If you have a question, consult this book.
great practical text for applied statisticians.......2000-08-10
George Box and Norman Draper have written an outstanding text on model building and response surface methods. This is an excellent companion to Box's text with Stu Hunter and William Hunter on experimental designs "Statistics for Experimenters". Another excellent, more recent and detailed account of response surface methods can be found in the book by Montgomery and Myers.
Excellent book.......1999-01-14
I do a lot of experimental work for my research and this book is definetely a good investment. I rate it amongst the best in the subject

Book Description
An ideal text for graduate level courses in transport phenomena for chemical engineers, Analysis of Transport Phenomena provides a unified treatment of momentum, heat, and mass transfer, emphasizing the concepts and analytical techniques that apply to all of these transport processes. The first few chapters establish the tools needed for later analyses while also covering heat and mass transfer in stationary media. The similarities among the molecular or diffusive transport mechanisms--heat conduction, diffusion of chemical species, and viscous transfer of momentum--are highlighted. Conservation equations for scalar quantites are derived first in general form, and then used to obtain the governing equations for total mass, energy, and chemical species. The scaling and order-of-magnitude concepts which are crucial in modeling are also introduced. Certain key methods for solving the differential equations in transport problems, including similarity, perturbation, and finite Fourier transform techniques, are described using conduction and diffusion problems as examples. Following chapters are devoted to fluid mechanics, beginning with fundamental equations for momentum transfer and then discussing unidirectional flow, nearly unidirectional (lubrication) flow, creeping flow, and laminar boundary layer flow. Forced-convection heat and mass transfer in laminar flow, multicomponent energy and mass transfer, free convection, and turbulence are also covered. The appendix summarizes vector and tensor operations and relations involving various coordinate systems. Based on twenty years of teaching and extensive class testing, Analysis of Transport Phenomena offers students both extensive coverage of the topic and inclusion of modern examples from bioengineering, membrane science, and materials processing. It is mathematically self-contained and is also unique in its treatment of scaling and approximation techniques and its presentation of the finite Fourier transform method for solving partial differential equations.
Customer Reviews:
Good grad level text.......2007-04-30
Very good graduate level text. Not an introductory text. Like some of the other reviews say, the author does not spend much time with the basics, however if that is what you are after, look at B-S-L Transport Phenomena.
Profound insight, omits mundane and essential details/steps.......2007-03-26
This book, so far, is well organized and provides a most excellent approach to transport phenomena. The author evidently has a deep understanding of the topic.
On the negative side, this book could do with some revising. Example problems should have a better "ansatz," that is, a more clearly-defined starting point for the analysis of problems in transport (i.e. should we consider balance and constitutive equations simultaneous at the start of every problem?). When working out Example problems, equations throughout the chapter do not seem to be invoked in any order, so it can be hard to follow the author's train of thought. Another problem which cost me a couple hours of hard "figuring" was trying to determine the motivation for stating "C[A]" as evaluated at "L" (see p. 51-52). To summarize, much of the student's understanding of the subject is taken for granted (perhaps to be expected, since this is a graduate-level text on the subject).
I agree with the review that says this book would be invaluable for research and obtaining a deep understanding of transport phenomena. This book would be perfect if the basic principles of transport phenomena were repeatedly touched upon (one example is the the equations on p. 4, which are mentioned once and used without citation or warning in several examples) for the first few chapters (and THEN steps could be skipped and the reader's knowledge can be taken for granted). Then, anyone with enough mathematical aptitude could obtain a very deep understanding of transport phenomena by reading this book.
Good 1st transport book for grads.......2005-04-22
I got so involved with this book that I virtually wrote notes on every single page. The amount of useful information in this book has exceeded the tolerance the binding has for my handling. And I even took good care of it too! After my organic chemistry text, I'd say that I spent more time with this book than any other on my shelf.
Briliant!!.......2004-02-08
This book is well organized, well detailed, and well articulated. The lessons are useful and the text approachable for an academic work. I've read / had to use many other textbooks in my pursuit of a chemical engineering education and this is the best. I give it a whole-hearted recommendation for any serious student.
I heart this book.......2003-11-20
This book would be better if the author didnt have a tendancy to leave steps out of most his examples. Problems at the end of the chapters can be really difficult. I highly suggest using another book, or atleast having a good undergraduate text to supplement this one.

Book Description
For the past 4 billion years, the chemistry of the Earth's surface, where all life exists, has changed remarkably. Historically, these changes have occurred slowly enough to allow life to adapt and evolve. In more recent times, the chemistry of the Earth is being altered at a staggering rate, fueled by industrialization and an ever-growing human population. Human activities, from the rapid consumption of resources to the destruction of the rainforests and the expansion of smog-covered cities, are all leading to rapid changes in the basic chemistry of the Earth.
The Second Edition of
Biogeochemistry considers the effects of life on the Earth's chemistry on a global level. This expansive text employs current technology to help students extrapolate small-scale examples to the global level, and also discusses the instrumentation being used by NASA and its role in studies of global change. With the Earth's changing chemistry as the focus, this text pulls together the many disparate fields that are encompassed by the broad reach of biogeochemistry. With extensive cross-referencing of chapters, figures, and tables, and an interdisciplinary coverage of the topic at hand, this text will provide an excellent framework for courses examining global change and environmental chemistry, and will also be a useful self-study guide.
* Emphasizes the effects of life on the basic chemistry of the atmosphere, the soils, and seawaters of the Earth
* Calculates and compares the effects of industrial emissions, land clearing, agriculture, and rising population on Earths chemistry
* Synthesizes the global cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur, and suggests the best current budgets for atmospheric gases such as ammonia, nitrous oxide, dimethyl sulfide, and carbonyl sulfide
* Includes an extensive review and up-to-date synthesis of the current literature on the Earths biogeochemistry

Biogeochemistry .......2007-10-06
This book, while slightly dated now, as much science has been done since it was published is still very thorough on the subject.
Solid science.......2007-03-15
I bought this book to prepare for my comprehensive exam. Book consists of two parts: first part describes the generalities of physical/chemical/biological properties of atmosphere, soils, oceans; it also contains the description of the specifics of each cycle (main biogeochemical elements) in all those environment. The second part describes the cycles on the global scale, with up-to-date references to today`s situation on carbon dioxide concentration and prospects on global climate change. Very good material andvery good explanation.
Good Overview of the Subject.......2005-08-24
I actually took Biogeochemistry from Dr. Schlesinger last fall and I do feel that the book is a good survey of alot of geochemical cycles and is presented at an undergraduate level.
However, some of the information, particularly about methane, was severely broken up throughout the text to the point where it was difficult to put together complete chemical cycles of some elements..
Nevertheless, it gives the reader the broad brush strokes necessary to get up to speed, particularly if you do not have a strong science background. For those who are very familiar to the sciences, you can get much more complete information from review papers than is presented here.
Such a good textbook.......2005-07-12
I had to buy this for a Biogeochemical Cycles class. The book is great! It's actual readable, which I was never expecting. It's interesting and understandable. The first reviewer is right that it doesn't get too complex, but references out the more difficult parts. I appreciated not having to read the way-too-hard stuff on my first introduction to this subject.
An Overview of a Complex Subject.......2000-03-25
Biogeochemistry starts with a grand overview, including the formation of the elements, solar system & planets, and then progressively narrows the focus into specifics. As such by the time you get to a chapter on, say, the global carbon cycle, you already have a pretty good idea of where it fits in the big picture. Part I (Processes & Reactions) contains 9 chapters (Introduction, Origin, the Atmosphere, the Lithosphere, Biosphere: Terrstrial Carbon Cycle, Biosphere: Biogeochemical Cycling on Land, Biogeochemistry of Freshwater, Rivers & Estuaries, & the Oceans), which do a balanced job of covering the biological & geological aspects (too many books focus on one or the other). Part II (Global Cycles) has 5 chapters (Water, Carbon, Nitrogen & Phosphorous, Sulfur, & a final chapter on perspectives) that provide more of the details in these specalized catagories. Suitable for the advanced undergaduate or very interested bystandard, there's little detailed math (a weakness for me, but maybe not for you) but the chemistry is well summarized (and the biochemistry made simple & understandable), and the tables & graphs are clean and very useful. Perhaps more importantly for a "textbook", the style is readable - Schlesinger keeps the essentials, but does not bury the reader in them. While it might not provide all you need at a high level, the references scattered throughout as well as the recommended readings make this a great starting point for the subject, and a handy reference book for the subject as a whole.

Book Description
This textbook presents a systematic and unifying viewpoint for a wide class of nonlinear spectroscopic techniques in time domain and frequency domain. It is directed towards active researchers in physics, optics, chemistry, and materials science, as well as graduate students who enter this complex and rapidly developing field. Nonlinear optical interactions of laser fields with matter provide powerful spectroscopic tools for the understanding of microscopic interactions and dynamic processes. One of the major obstacles facing researchers in this field, however, is the flood of experimental techniques and terminologies, which create a serious language barrier. The general microscopic correlation function approach to the nonlinear optical response developed in this book is essential for understanding the relationships among different techniques and a comparison of their information content, the design of new measurements, and for a systematic comparison of the optical response of different systems such as dyes in solutions, atoms and molecules in the gas phase, liquids, molecular aggregates and superlatives, and semiconductor nanostructures. The approach is based on formulating the nonlinear response by representing the state of matter by the density matrix and following its evolution on Liouville space. Current active research areas such as femtosecond time-domain techniques, semi-classical and wave-packet dynamics, pulse shaping, pulse locking, exciton confinement, and the interplay of electronic, nuclear and field coherence are emphasized. The material has been developed from the author's highly successful interdisciplinary course at the University of Rochester attended by science and engineering graduate students.
Customer Reviews:
Principles of Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy - a Must Have.......2004-03-01
This is an excellent and very important book. The subject of nonlinear optical spectroscopy is a rapidly emerging field that is important in chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science. This book provides the theoretical underpinning for the entire field. It deals with a large number of experimental methods and topics that are widely used. This is a complex subject, and this is not a simple book. To present the theory at a level that enables researchers to understand and design experiments, it is necessary to go into depth in subjects that are complex conceptually and mathematically. A simplified version of the theory would be easier to follow, but it would not be useful. This book is a must for anyone in the field of nonlinear optical spectroscopy, whether he is an experimentalist or a theoretician.
the bible for spectroscopists.......2001-02-05
Unfortunately, this book is pretty much the only comprehesive text on the subject, and if you're a grad student about to begin study in this field, you will need this book. Mukamel is certainly very knowledgable, and he gives a unified treatment of absorption, transient grating, and photon echo spectroscopies in terms of double-sided Feynman diagrams. However, his treatment is highly algebraic and builds no physical intuition of the phenomena. If you can understand him, you probably thoroughly understood the topics before you read the book anyway. Self-study with this book will be frustrating, but it's an important resource for instructors and others who already understand the topic.
Book Description
Group sequential methods answer the needs of clinical trial monitoring committees who must assess the data available at an interim analysis. These interim results may provide grounds for terminating the study-effectively reducing costs-or may benefit the general patient population by allowing early dissemination of its findings. Group sequential methods provide a means to balance the ethical and financial advantages of stopping a study early against the risk of an incorrect conclusion. Group Sequential Methods with Applications to Clinical Trials describes group sequential stopping rules designed to reduce average study length and control Type I and II error probabilities. The authors present one-sided and two-sided tests, introduce several families of group sequential tests, and explain how to choose the most appropriate test and interim analysis schedule. Their topics include placebo-controlled randomized trials, bio-equivalence testing, crossover and longitudinal studies, and linear and generalized linear models. Research in group sequential analysis has progressed rapidly over the past 20 years. Group Sequential Methods with Applications to Clinical Trials surveys and extends current methods for planning and conducting interim analyses. It provides straightforward descriptions of group sequential hypothesis tests in a form suited for direct application to a wide variety of clinical trials. Medical statisticians engaged in any investigations planned with interim analyses will find this book a useful and important tool.
Customer Reviews:
clear coverage for practicing biostatisticians.......2000-06-28
Advances in the theory of repeated significance testing in the 1980s and 1990s has made sequential methods practical by identifying stopping rules for data collected sequentially but in groups. This material is now used to plan interim analyses and both safety and efficacy group sequential trials for clinical trials. This text provides for the first time thorough coverage of these advances with suitable references to the literature.
It should be on the bookshelf of any biostatistician who conducts clinical trials for pharmaceutical or medical device companies.
