Book Description
Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, 7/e, presents comprehensive coverage of the subject of thermodynamics from a chemical engineering viewpoint. The text provides a thorough exposition of the principles of thermodynamics and details their application to chemical processes. The chapters are written in a clear, logically organized manner, and contain an abundance of realistic problems, examples, and illustrations to help students understand complex concepts. New ideas, terms, and symbols constantly challenge the readers to think and encourage them to apply this fundamental body of knowledge to the solution of practical problems.
The comprehensive nature of this book makes it a useful reference both in graduate courses and for professional practice. The seventh edition continues to be an excellent tool for teaching the subject of chemical engineering thermodynamics to undergraduate students.

Solid textbook.......2006-02-25
This is a solid thermo textbook. Goes over concepts and theories fairly well. There are plenty of worked out examples throughout the chapters and appendixes so you know what you're doing. The authors explain everything in a clear and cohesive manner. Somethings are overwhelming, but it is thermodynamics. Plenty of appendixes for steam tables, interroplation, unit conversions, and virial equation constants, etc.
I suggest you get the Schaum's outline as a good reference too.
False advertisement.......2005-10-04
I received the book, but not what I was expecting. The book was advertised as a hardback, but the book received was paperback. The book was an international edition, and not for resale in North America.
Book Description
The only text to cover both thermodynamic and statistical mechanics--allowing students to fully master thermodynamics at the macroscopic level. Presents essential ideas on critical phenomena developed over the last decade in simple, qualitative terms. This new edition maintains the simple structure of the first and puts new emphasis on pedagogical considerations. Thermostatistics is incorporated into the text without eclipsing macroscopic thermodynamics, and is integrated into the conceptual framework of physical theory.

Wrong Edition Sent.......2007-09-24
Although the edition was correct, the book was a paperback when I specifically paid for hardbound. Even more frustrating was the fact that it was not eligible for return.
Key to undestanf statistical physics.......2006-10-26
The postulational approach is really great. This book tooks away all the question I had about the connection between thermodynamics and statistical physics. I think it's a good idea to read Fermi's thermodynamics also. To see how smart one can be when using thermodynamics.
nice book, nice service.......2005-09-16
I am both satisfied with amazon service and with the book.
Excellent.......2005-03-30
Beautiful simple straightforward approach to thermodynamics. The postulates are well explained and the use of the axioms is highlighted. Challenging questions make this book a joy to use, great a student text as well as a reference.
Insightful Postulational Approach to Thermodynamics.......2004-05-19
Why did I buy an older thermodynamics text, one first published in 1960? I trusted the advice of earlier reviewers.
They say: 1) The best treatment of classical thermodynamics that I have seen. The chapters on phase transitions are excellent and the mechanical model used to illustrate critical phenomena is brilliant. 2) It is far better than most books on the subject. 3) I think this book has no competition as a text in thermodynamics. It is the ideal preparation for a book like Landau's Statistical Physics. 4) The overview of the fundamentals of thermodynamics is without rival. 5) I think this book is a great option if you feel disappointed with the standard treatment of thermodynamics.
A few reviewers argued that Callen's text was less suitable for engineering students (too few heat-mechanical energy conversion problems) and chemical engineers (too few chemical mixture problems).
My trust was not misplaced. Thermodynamics, an Introduction to the Physical Theories of Equilibrium Thermostatics and Irreversible Thermodynamics, is an exceptional text. I give it five stars.
H. B. Callen offers a fascinating and insightful postulational approach to thermodynamics rather than the conventional inductive approach. He targets first year graduate students and advanced undergraduates; however, even readers proficient with advanced thermodynamics should find Callen's approach stimulating.
The text has three primary sections: General Principles of Classical Thermodynamics (200 pages), Representative Applications (65 pages), and Fluctuations and Irreversible Thermodynamics (50 pages). An extensive appendix, some 50 pages, offers a useful review of pertinent mathematics and other relevant topics. Answers are not provided to the chapter problems.
Interspersed throughout are brief chapters that review useful mathematical techniques. I appreciated the discussions of the Euler equation, the Legendre transformations, the extremum principle in the Legendre transformed representations, and the Maxwell relations (not the Maxwell EM equations). Callen provides useful tools like a thermodynamic mnemonic diagram (first introduced by Max Born) and associated procedures for reducing the formal manipulation of partial derivates to "a simple recipe".
Callen's text has been widely used. I reviewed the 1960 first edition, eighteenth printing. A second edition published in 1984 is easier to find and is often used today as a supplementary text.
Thanks again for the advice from previous reviewers.

Most Established Thermo text is also most up to date.......2005-01-10
In the new 7th edition I saw for the first time an equation of state explicit for density.
A fundamental text !.......2004-08-08
As Chemical Engineering demands from you three Thermodynamics , this book is for you . I do not remember any other book so well written and with so clear explanation about the fugacity concepts for instance . The solved problems about the first and second law of Thermodynamics are extraordinary .
After you are engaged with this text you will forget your teacher without missing him .
Useless.......2004-05-10
Ok, so i am a chemical engineering student, and this is supposed to be the textbook. Which allegedly would later on make it a forced reference for a student. However, the only useful information is the steam tables, because the properties and other things are insufficient, trust me, the book has sitted on my shelf unused for a year and a half. I have not sold it because no one here would buy it. The explanations are poor. If you want to know about thermodynamics, this is really not your book, I would rather recommend a Fisicochemistry book.
As for properties tables and the such, well, the information you are really going to use is all summed up in the Chemical Engineer's Handbook, which is a must for any ChE, even if you're just a student (believe me, it has saved me a lot of times).
Old, outdated classic cant compete with modern thermo books!.......2004-04-06
Although the book is totally introductory, it does *not* serve well to teach you something. Contents, concepts, structure, didactics, writing style and layout are more than obsolete: this text is the worst US-textbook on thermo ever (engineering thermo/chemical thermo/chemical engineering thermo), believe me! If you do not share my opinion, then it must be due to your absolute ignorance regarding this field or your pretended incompetence. This book is neither worth buying, owning, working with, nor looking at. Do not waste your time with this superficial and totally introductory, conveying-nothing text. The reason why this has been a best-seller from the late 1940's to the late 1980's (four decades!) is its age: it has been the *very* first, (c)1949, and thus, the most well-known, popular book on chem eng thermo. 'The eldest' is always being respected the most ("a classic"), but this does not mean that a best-selling classic is the best. Forget this outdated title of the (outdated?) McGraw-Hill Chemical Engineering Series and profit from the new fresh look and uptodate, modern approach taken by competitive book series (Wiley, Prentice Hall, Wiley-Interscience, and...McGraw-Hill ;). Smith's 6th edition book is an incredibly poor monograph! And by the way, it is rather a treatment of Engineering Thermodynamics than a treatment of Chemical (Engineering) Thermodynamics!! Since this obsolete classic cannot compete with the new titles, I give a 2-stars rating only. 50 years ago, Smith was the de facto standard intro text (and it remains an "Introducation" throughout the 800 pages!), now this has changed.
Please also read my pos reviews of thermo books by Stanley I. Sandler 1999 (for advanced learners), Noel de Nevers 2002 (for beginners), and Stanley M. Walas 1985 (for workers). For a complete listing of relevant thermo titles have a look at table 8-1, pages 8.2-8.4, in Poling/Prausnitz/O'Connell 5th ed. c2001.
It's complete, easy to read and comprehensive.......2003-05-13
This book is written specifically for chemical engineers. It covers topics such as EOS for non-ideal multicomponent mixtures, chemical reaction thermodynamics and thermodynamics of solutions. I suggest it to everyone who have trouble with this course.

Best Introduction.......2006-11-10
There are two negative things to be said of this textbook: I had trouble putting it down, reading well into the night; and, I wanted more.
For those entering the field of explosive engineering, this is an excellant first text. Having learned about shock waves from texts and reports written by those who created the field of explosive engineering, it was a task to learn on my own. Paul Cooper has written a book that makes the subject seem so simple and understandable I wonder why I had so much difficulty understanding these basics. This can only be explained by this text having been written by someone who knows the subject intimately, and has tremendous skills as a wordsmith. It is also obvious that Paul Cooper has put considerable of effort into this work, not letting it be published until it was truely ready.
It is well worth the price, and will be as great a value to the savant as to the neophyte in this field. An excellant predecessor to Paul Cooper's "Explosives Engineering."

Book Description
An Introduction to Fire Dynamics Second Edition Dougal Drysdale University of Edinburgh, UK Fire Safety Engineering, identified in the original edition as 'a relatively new discipline', has since grown significantly in stature, as Fire Safety Engineers around the world begin to apply their skills to complex issues that defy solution by the old 'prescriptive' approach to fire safety. This second edition has the same structure as the first highly successful text, but has been updated with the latest research results. Fire processes are discussed and quantified in terms of the mechanisms of heat transfer and fluid flow. Problems addressed include:
* The conditions necessary for ignition and steady burning of combustible materials to occur
* How large a fire has to become before fire detectors and sprinkler heads will operate
* The circumstances that can lead to flashover in a compartment
This book is unique in that it identifies fire science and fire dynamics and provides the scientific background necessary for the development of fire safety engineering as a professional discipline. It is essential reading for all those involved in this wide ranging field, from Fire Prevention Officers to Consulting Engineers, whether involved in problems of fire risk assessment, fire safety design, or fire investigation. It will also be of considerable interest and value to research scientists working in building design, fire physics and chemistry.

The Master Speaks - Again.......2006-08-22
An excellent update of Dr. Drysdale's "must-have" 1985 introduction to advanced fire physics. Dr. Drysdale brings the reader up-to-date (as of the 1998 publication date) on the state of the art in fire behavior, analysis, prediction and modeling.
I bought the paperback, because (a) the hardback is more expensive (Dr. Drysdale is Scottish, after all...); and (b) the 3rd edition is hopefully only a few years away. Readers in active day-to-date fire science application work probably will want the more durable hardback edition.

Book Description
This is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either in an undergraduate physical chemistry course or by beginning graduate students with little undergraduate background in the subject. It assumes familiarity with thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, the kinetic theory of gases, quantum mechanics and spectroscopy, at the level at which these subjects are normally treated in undergraduate physical chemistry. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics and is ideally suited to use in one semester courses.
Download Description
Statistical mechanics is the theoretical apparatus used to study the properties of macroscopic systems - systems made up of many atoms or molecules - and relates those properties to the system's microscopic constitution. This book is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either by advanced undergraduates or by beginning graduate students. The first chapter deals with statistical thermodynamics and aims to quickly derive the most commonly used formulas in the subject. The remainder of the book then illustrates the application of these formulas in traditional areas such as the ideal gas and less traditional areas such as the quantum ideal gas. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics ideal for use on an 8-12 lecture course.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction.......2006-09-01
While looking for a suitable textbook for a one-semester course on Statistical Mechanics, I found this little gem by Prof. Widom, a recognized authority in the field. It was a pleasure to read, clear, all the classical topics well explained, very understandable.
Several excellent textbook on the subject are available, but none conveys so much in so little space (THE SPACE you have available in an undergraduate lecture course), yet with no compromise on rigour or clarity. At the beginning, I was a little uneasy by the choice of skipping a discussion of the (difficult) foundations, jumping directly to the Boltzmann distribution as a starting point. Now I totally agree with it, it is the best for a first introduction, and if time is left (rarely) one can profitably add a discussion on fundations at the end of the course.

Excellent Introduction to Combustion.......2007-01-01
I became acquainted with this book when it was used as one of several references for a graduate level mechanical engineering course in combustion. The book does an excellent job of explaining chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics - particularly if the reader has very little previous exposure to these topics.
I would have liked to see more solved example problems but this is probably a desire of any student when using an engineering text.
This book is well written and presents much complex material for the non-chemist in a clear and concise manner. Those working with internal combustion engines will find the materials on pollutant formation (Chapter 15) very useful, including the 78 end of chapter references.
-John
Readable.......2003-03-21
This book is used at UCLA for a senior mechanical/aerospace engineering course. I would only recommend it to someone interested in pursuing graduate level course work in combustion. Suggested Prereq: Heat & MassX, Fluids, Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Differential Equations (ODE, PDE, CPU).
The good
It has good references to modern combustion sources/codes. good introduction to whats possible.
The bad
A lot of derivations are made, but the equations arent solved, except for the trivial or ultra-simplified cases. So its not too useful for a practicing engineer.
The ugly
He mispells prior as priori about 20 times, and refers to variable as rs. You dont know if it is r times s, or if it is multiple r's.
An Introduction to Combustion : Concepts and Applications.......2000-12-29
An excellent introductory book on combustion. Suitable for an undergraduate course or for self-study. Fundamental concepts are clearly explained with many calculation examples and problems to solve. The material is presented in a very attractive and easy to read way. Also, has numerous references to webpages with useful information, plus computer programmes to solve basic problems, like equilibrium composition. The overall approach is to provide tools to make practical calculations using computational tools.
a good cobustion course textbook.......2000-06-20
An appreciable attempt to cover the basics of all aspects of combustion science on a first comburtion-science course level, this book does manage to be very clear and structured, with good examples and clarifying illustrations, students of combustion science will find it a very helpful introduction. However, as many science books often are, it fails to present a synthetic view of this field, and the reader is left wondering if such a view is even possible, but the different chapters may serve those interested specifically in them.
Steve Turns makes Combustion easy.......2000-06-17
I think Steve has abilities to convey scientific ideas in a simple, easy to understand manner. His interaction with industrial clients, industrial applications and combustion equipment has given him an insight for explaining basics as applied to the real world. He also understands utilities of various combustion properties, parameters and correlations. He also knows how you can apply it for the maximim benefit for a given process. I recommend this book to any practicing engineer in the combustion field. Steve is a great communicator and a friend of combustion industry. At Air Liquide I have used this book to design burners, flames and combustion processes for steel, glass, chemical and process industries. Sincerely, Dr. Mike Joshi, Combustion Scientist, Air Liquide, Chicago Research Center, Countryside, IL 60525

Decent Book on Convective Heat Transfer.......2001-03-16
I purchased 3 convective heat transfer books from Amazon on behalf of my company - including this book. IMHO the other two were duds, but this one is pretty good. I myself own 3 other similar books and I can think of only one other (Bejan) that is as useful.
This a textbook for college students, but it is a nice reference as well.
I like that it mixes theory with some computational methods (finite difference), because after all, theory is critical to understanding but in many cases we will compute the results. This not really a book for learning CFD, but the numerical results are a nice complement to the theory - and extend the discussion to geometries without closed form solutions.
For those interested, the authors offer the Fortran source from a website for several programs referenced in the book.
The book is sensibly organized by classes of flows, internal & external for laminar, turbulent and natural convection. Plus porous media and condensation. I particularily like the chapter on natural convection inside of enclosures.
There are several really good analyses and scale arguments developed in this book, a lot of solutions to NSE's for many real situations.
Overall I'd say it is really a good introduction for someone who wants to do more than look up a few formulae.
Book Description
The book focuses on basic elements of condensation and vaporization processes. The basic physical mechanisms associated with a particular phase-change phenomenon are described in detail, followed by a representative sample of the best models applicable to the circumstances of interest. Throughout the text, the importance of the basic phenomena to a wide variety of applications is discussed.

Great book for the newbie.......2005-11-19
This book is one of the few books I have found on the topic of two phase flow which gives good, concise physical models that correspond to the mathematical theory.
Excellent introductory book for studying Two Phase Flow.......1996-06-29
There are very few books written exclusively focussing on Two Phase flow, and this is one of the very good books on that subject. It caters the interest of Mechanical engineers in large and also Chemical engineer

The Properties of Gases and Liquids
ASIN: 1860940196 |
Book Description
This book is concerned with the prediction of thermodynamic and transport properties of gases and liquids. The prediction of such properties is essential for the solution of many problems encountered in chemical and process engineering as well as in other areas of science and technology. The book aims to present the best of those modern methods which are capable of practical application. It begins with basic scientific principles and formal results which are subsequently developed into practical methods of prediction. Numerous examples, supported by a suite of computer programmes, illustrate applications of the methods.
