Book Description

John McMurry's international best-seller is widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that readers who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the "what" of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the "why." Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. In this edition, McMurry retains his standard-setting features (including his innovative vertical format for explaining reaction mechanisms) while revising his text line-by-line to include hundreds of small but important improvements. For example, the Sixth Edition includes new examples, additional steps in existing examples, new problems, new phrases to clarify the exposition, and a vibrant new art program. In addition, new icons in the text lead students to a variety of new online resources. McMurry's text is in use at hundreds of colleges and universities around the world, from North America, to the United Kingdom and the Pacific Rim.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2007-08-12

I have used this text in my Organic classes and have found it very useful and informative. The author uses clear explanations and examples for all key elements in each chapter. The mechanisms and reactions are clearly described and detailed. Also for every college student the solutions manual reveals it all. It has both odd and even solutions. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because not all of the exercise problems really follow what you actually get taught in class, but they are still useful. Great text overall.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-07-07

This seemed like an okay book for chemistry. There were a few things that we covered in class however, that were not in this book, just a couple of reactions. I recommend the book "Pushing Electrons" as a supplement to this to help with resonance, it helped me a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Good Comprehensive Review.......2007-03-01

Good Textbook, clear and concise. However, for an advanced student who needs or wants to learn advanced explanations refer to another textbook on occasion. I use this as a reference on occasion b/c it serves my needs just fine, the SOLUTIONS/STUDY Guide manual is a must and gives very detailed explanations of the problems in the text, the manual is EXCELLENT. The strong point of this book are the practice questions which really get you thinking.

1 out of 5 stars Will not help at all!!!.......2006-08-05

This book was the required textbook for my organic I and II class...and it didn't help with either. If you didn't understands something the way the professor explained it, the book provided no help. The explainations in it were very short and were of no help at all. Most of the time the examples were too simple to really teach you anything. This is a very elementary textbook, that doesn't seem worthy to me of a place in any college or university.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't help me!.......2006-05-03

This text is an easy read, and you will understand the reactions that are given in the text examples. So why the low rating? Organic chemistry is all about "prediction". And when it comes to teaching you how to predict the outcomes of reactions you've never seen before, it is lacking! You can study this text two hours a day, every day, and unless you have an uncanny ability to understand chemistry (I don't)--you will still not have this most fundamental skill you need to succeed. Try "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" and "Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language". They will have you predicting and understanding Orgo in no time!! This course isn't hard at all- once someone explains it to you properly. David Klein (the author of those two books) does that beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent O-Chem Book!!!.......2006-12-15

This is one of the finest O-Chem books I've seen! I own other textbooks, but this one does a spectacular job of explaining concepts in detail, and providing useful notes in the margins to avoid common mistakes. It's well-written and well-edited. I strongly recommend getting he full solutions manual with it as well.

5 out of 5 stars this is a darn good book.......2006-08-16

So I must admit that this is the book my favorite professor in college used. I also must admit that my favorite professor in college was Skip Wade the author. That said, this is a *very* good book if you're looking to understand the concepts behind orgo. Yes, there's memorizing (for goodness sakes, make flashcards! You can't get around this!). Yes, it's a pain. Yes, you'll find yourself doing 'back attacks' in your sleep. But in the end, this book will beat into you the intuition necessary to continue on in chemistry. And, as an added bonus, Wade throws in some little jokes to give you relief during those all night study sessions. Ah, memories...

Book Description

There are many books that discuss distillation, but there is only one that concentrates on giving readers practical guidelines for operation, troubleshooting and control. This is that book. Its contents revolves around over 300 actual case histories of distillation problems that occurred in the past. Each problem and its solution are briefly described, and the lessons learned are molded into the practical guidelines that make up the book. Carefully focused, the book shows you how over 90% of all column malfunctions occurred in the past, how they were solved, and how to prevent them in the future. Starting with column internals and their malfunctions, it progresses to installation, commissioning, startup and normal operation before surveying the auxiliary system and the column automatic controls--how they should be, how they can go wrong, and how you can repair them. This book offers the best available compendium of Do's and Don'ts, good practices, and guidelines for trouble-free design, operation and troubleshooting for inlets and outlets; distributors; avoiding tray damage; installation; commissioning and startup techniques; column flood and efficiency testing; pressure, temperature and boilup control; and many more.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good reference .......2007-06-01

I found this a very good reference on distillation, and a worthwhile resource on the PE exam. It however, as expected, assumes you understand interphase mass transfer and distillation theory.

5 out of 5 stars A must for people in any phase of distillation field.......2002-01-03

This is the more complete book on practical aspects of distillation and absorption. From design (together with the companion book Distillation Design) to startup and troubleshoot. The last subject is also covered by other books, relating to the subject himself, but on distillation and absorption columns this is the only book not out-of-print; note that it covers also mechanical aspects usually fund only on Best Prectices by Engineering and Contracting Company.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-09-19

This book has been very helpful in understanding the complex topics in biochemistry such as protein folding. Very well written for the beginning biochemistry student who only has a general background in chemistry and biology

5 out of 5 stars Great Bio-Chem Book.......2006-03-18

This book is very detailed and covers a wide range of bio-chemistry information.

4 out of 5 stars Well-written, not-so-hot layout.......2005-11-17

My university uses this book for the two-semester biochem sequence for BSc Chemistry/Biochemistry students. It's a well-written book, overall -- lots of information but not a very dense "scientific" read. The best part is the way the authors keep tying things back to reality ... sidebars explain how the dynamics of protein folding affect Alzheimer's disease, or what protease inhibition means for the development of HIV drugs.

The figures are aesthetically pleasing and really help to clarify descriptions in the text. The only problem is that the figures are usually a couple pages away from the text they refer to. For example, when describing the mechanism of chymotrypsin cleavage, it would make a lot more sense to put all the text on the left page and the mechanism/structures on the right page. Instead, the text is about three pages before the mechanism, meaning the reader has to keep flipping back and forth trying to understand what is going on. It's like that in most if not all cases. Not a big deal, but it's the sort of thing the layout editor should have realized when putting the book together. Maybe they'll fix it in the fourth edition.

Regardless, this is a very good biochem book. I'd recommend it for an undergraduate student of chemistry or biochemistry.

5 out of 5 stars biochemistry.......2005-10-12

i love this book, i am using it for my biochemistry class and it helps me understand the material very well. I also loved the price since my school's bookstore charges close to double what its worth with amazon.com.

3 out of 5 stars Its a standard text.......2005-09-26

The textbook is pretty standard. It may be a little long winded in portions about details that are very specific but unnecessary. In general, it is at least a good reference for use in biochemistry.

I have to admit that this is the most interesting books I've ever read. If you want to know how the basics of life all tie together and form the world and existance around you then this is for you. This book has seriously opened up the world to me. I cannot look at anything around me like I used to. I recommend getting and reading this book solo. The way it is written makes it perfectly understandable without a teacher or professor of any kind. Everything is spelled out clearly with simple everday comparisons and examples. There are a ton of useful problems to work on to assist in cementing your knowledge in place. Seriously though I really can't think of any other book I've ever read that was more interesting than this one. Pick it up and prepare to see your world unfold in front of you as a new and chaotic, complex and beautifully organized universe.

Book Description

The new Third Edition of INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY: AN ACTIVE LEARNING APPROACH gives you the tools you need to teach the course your way. As the book's "Active Learning Approach" subtitle suggests, the authors provide a question-and-answer presentation that allows students to actively learn chemistry while studying an assignment. This approach is reflected in three words of advice and encouragement that are repeated throughout the book: Learn It Now! When students encounter the Learn It Now! icon, an example leads them through a series of steps where they "listen" to the authors guide them step by step to the solution. As they solve the problem, they actively write each step, covering the answer with the shield provided in the book. This feature turns the common passive "read the author's solution" approach to examples into an active "work the problem while guided by the authors" methodology. As with previous editions, this text allows professors to tailor the order of chapters to accommodate their particular needs through two flexible formats--a standard paperbound edition and loose-leaf edition. This flexibility is achieved not only by carefully writing each topic so it never assumes prior knowledge, but also by including any and all necessary preview or review information needed to learn that topic. The new Third Edition has been streamlined and now integrates new features such as helpful technological resources, coached problems, and enhanced art and photography, all of which dovetail with the text's active learning approach.

4 out of 5 stars Good Learning Tool.......2005-10-04

"Introductory Chemistry" by Cracolice and Peters is very well written, and well organized as far as textbooks go.I always found their ability to explain the basic concepts of Chemistry to be superior to many of the other General Chem books on the market. I used this book in conjunction with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry" by Ian Guch to self-teach myself almost all of the General Chem curriculum. Admittedly, I used Cracolice's work as a supplement to the Complete Idiot's Guide because Guch's book is heads above just about any textbook I have ever encountered in terms of an ability to present the "nned to know" info in an accessible framework. I only used Cracolice when I didn't feel satisfied with Guch, and was never really dissapointed. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Good deal.......2007-05-17

Good figures, nice organizarion, a bit short in therapeutics, but a great book overall.

5 out of 5 stars I was really surprised to see that people didn't like it. We loved it........2006-11-12

Once you get on the wards, this is by far the best book. It helps you with physical examination in the opening of each chapter, then lists symptoms and works outward from there. This, while people complained about it meaning that material is repeated in the disease sections, is INCREDIBLY helpful when you are new. It tells you the differential diagnosis for each symptom and what the workup should be. It's not as involved and impossible as Harrison (less research and "cytokine" oriented) but practical. I was the only one with this book and everyone, including the attendings, always wanted to use it. It also mentions the major EBM clinical trials - so you always look good about knowing what trial the guidelines come from and when they refer to them, you know what they mean.

I was really surprised to see that so many people didn't like it. That said, the nephrology chapter was relatively weak, and lots of the subspecialties as well, and it is definitely not a basic pathophysiology book or basic science text - but as a textbook of Internal Medicine, it was really good, friendly for students, and above all, PRACTICAL.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-01-27

Davidson's Principles and Practices of Medicine is a good overview of the different branches of internal medicine. In particular, Respiratory, Cardiolovascular, Gastrointestinal and Nervous system are well organized, concise and quite informative. It is not a very good source for infectious diseases, rheumatology, nephrology or psychiatry.
I like how the book is organized into a brief introduction to organ physiology, major manifestation of diseases and individual diseases. The section on Liver diseases maybe the best source for learning the subject in this category of books. It might be worth borrowing/buying this book just for that.

3 out of 5 stars Not so well organised.......2005-07-08

I decided to read this book for my final examinations in medicine. I found it hard to read, primarly because of the "Major manifestations" sections. Having theses sections in the book means that it is written about each disease in at least two different places and therefore there are many repetitions. Also there are too many boxes and tables (usually I really like tables and figures, but not when they are too many). After a few chapters I gave up and changed to another book, which was much better organized (Kumar and Clark).

    3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Joker.......2005-03-13

Unless you are partial to "bri-ish" colloqial terms like foetal and oeosphagus this book is a waste of time. It takes up too much space on my book shelf. Read Big Robbins, it's all in there. I only read this book because I had to for school.

Took a few days longer then i would have liked, but not too bad!!

4 out of 5 stars Book is good, CD useless.......2007-02-06

The book has great examples and is very accessible for the beginner. The cd, on the other hand, is pretty useless for studying. I was expecting interactive tests and vocabulary- hands on learning. Instead it's very basic and random. For example, the first chapter has only 2 items to it- the first one being a short video on how an airbag works. How does this help me get an A?

    5 out of 5 stars I still hate chemistry.......2006-11-06

Great textbook, it really helped me learn what I needed to for school. I still hate the class though.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent descriptions, helpful excercises........2006-07-30

I'm currently a freshmen at a local college - Not the brightest person, but one that can catch on quite qickly. After getting that book, I flipped thought it before I actually needed for class. It describes everything with lots of precision, and gives real-life examples. At the end of every chapter are over 100 excercises on the things I learned. The whole book looks great on the inside, is organized very well, and is easy to understand - though some concepts are challenging to understand, the excercises at the end of the chapter (and the answers and steps to get the answers for odd problems at the back of the book) help make everything in depth yet easy to understand.
