Customer Reviews:
A great book - information overload.......2002-07-16
This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.
Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.
If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.
Plactical and Rational method Development!.......2000-03-15
Rational Method development for HPLC is resented. Instruction of rational development of 3-solvent separation system is excellent. This book also has useful know-hows and tools in practical laboratory experiments, such as strength of hydrogen bonding of base silica and nomograph for estimation of "solvent strength" for reversed phase HPLC.
an excellent book on pratical HPLC.......1998-01-20
The book is useful for gerenal operator who are both novice and expert. It do is pratice. It's better give another chapter for troubleshooting and maintence.

Customer Reviews:
MOdern HPLC for Practicing Scientists.......2007-06-04
HPLC has become one of the most widely applied chemical analytical techniques in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr Dong's book, Modern HPLC for Practicing Scientists, provides excellent source of information and knowledge for both beginners and highly experienced professionals who utilize this analytical tool. Chapter 1 presents an overview of chromatographic principles while the 2nd chapter deals with fundamental aspects of HPLC and considerations that enhance efficient separation. In chapter 3, Dr. Dong discusses the chromatographic column both from theoretical perspectives and applications. This is very valuable to practicing scientists.
In Chapter 4, the book provides a concise overview of HPLC instrumentation, operating principles as well as recent advances in instrumentation such as Waters Acquity UPLCTM (Chapter 11). A lot of information is provided on practical issues associated with the use of HPLC systems and the pictures and illustrations make their understanding much easier.
Chapter 5 provides a hands-on approach to HPLC analysis including mobile phase preparation and parameter optimization. This is a great chapter for a novel analyst who is often saddled with numerous options on the choice of HPLC parameters. Dr. Dong's attention to details makes it possible even for the novice chromatographer to undertake a full HPLC procedure with little or no supervision
Although Chapters 6 and 7 deal with applications in the pharmaceutical, food and environmental industries, the practicing scientist who this text is best suited for, would benefit more by integrating information from these chapters with the fundamental and practical concepts documented in the earlier chapters.
The inclusion of method development and regulatory issues with respect to HPLC techniques and applications in chapters 8 and 9 is particularly commendable. Industrial R & D scientists who are not only challenged to develop and optimize methods but also work within the constraints of regulatory agencies would find these chapters immensely rewarding. These chapters provide hands-on guidance for laboratory scientists in the pharmaceutical and other regulatory industries.
Chapter 10, dealing with troubleshooting is one of the special attributes of this book. This chapter provides quick fix approach to resolving some of the HPLC's often encountered problems. This chapter is bound to save some cost because more often than not, the HPLC analyst tend to vainly envisage and explore more catastrophic problems ignoring the simple remedies that are succinctly documented in Chapter 10.
Overall, Dr. Dong's book is very well written. Each aspect of the text is clearly and succinctly presented, making it easy to understand. The chapter on maintenance and troubleshooting guide (Chapter 11) should be a great asset. Dr. Dong has managed, in a very basic but meticulous manner, to produce an essential text for both the novice and experienced HPLC practitioner in the pharmaceutical industry.

Book Description
A reliable, comprehensive, relevant view of HPLC and its applications
The development of HPLC-PED represents the successful marriage of two powerful analytical technologies and has resulted in the best technique for sensitive and direct detection of biological compounds with poor optical detection properties. PED has been used extensively for the determination of carbohydrates and other polar aliphatic compounds, and as a result, numerous methods have been developed to enable the analysis of a wide variety of samples. Over the years, many articles, anecdotal information, and misinformation have permeated the scientific community, with the possible consequence of confusion or uncertainty with regard to PED on the part of the analyst. Pulsed Electrochemical Detection in High-Performance Liquid Chromatography presents a reliable, comprehensive, and relevant review of HPLC-PED and its applications.
The book is divided into three major parts: background material necessary for a more thorough understanding of the principles and relevance of PED; an in-depth discussion of PED using voltammetry and other electroanalytical techniques and presenting the advantages, applicability, and optimization of all existing PED waveforms; and practical aspects of HPLC-PED, including a summary of the major applications and a look at future developments in the technique. Appendices include a pulsed voltammetry (PV) program specifically written to optimize pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) waveforms and all the known applications, categorized and listed in tabular form.
For analytical chemists; biochemists; carbohydrate chemists; biotechnologists; undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students; and lab technicians working in a range of areas including the pharmaceutical, medical, and food and beverage industries, this eminently readable guide is the first reliable book-length treatment of how to use PED coupled with HPLC.
Book Description
This text provides explanations and examples of the primary chromatographic techniques for biomolecules (reversed-phase, size exclusion, ion-exchange, hydrophobic interaction and affinity). It also offers practical suggestions for their implementation and optimization. An extensive bibliography furnishes a wealth of background information.
Customer Reviews:
So brilliant that I cried--twice!.......2003-04-25
This is without a doubt the most brilliant and poignant depiction of HPLC and CE of biomolecules in modern history. My extreme hyperactivity disorder usually means that I'm not able to sit still for such weighty topics--not without large amounts of abused Ritalin; but Cunico's work was so compelling and finely wrought that I found myself spellbound, even when drunk, even when driving in the backseat of a stolen car across the Mexican border at Tecate. I am not going to recommend drinking heavily and stealing cars. But I do recommend BASIC HPLC and CE OF BIOMOLECULES by Robert L. Cunico. By the way, I am extremely drunk right now.
Basic HPLC and CE of Biomolecules.......2000-12-24
This is a book that should be on the desk of anyone who is involved in analytical development of biomolecules and biopharmaceuticals. The content is well organized and written in a format that is easy to grasp and understand. The content covers almost all the different modalities of HPLC analyses and applications and provides real life examples of the techniques. It includes innumerable suggestions on how best to develop a validatable HPLC method and analyze the data appropriately.
I would highly recommend this book to both new and old members of biotechnology, especially the developmental, analytical, and quality assurance groups where there is frequently a need to implement a solid reliable method for analyzing biomolecules in a more rational fashion.
