The Bible of the Field.......2007-03-24
When as a young physicist I started working on rocket nozzle design most of the material in this book had to be dug up from a paper here, a book there, or else it simply wasn't known. Now here's everything you need to know in a couple of chapters. And besides nozzle design, here in information on virtually every aspect of rockets from the design to the propellents, from concepts to testing. Most of the book is on conventional liquid or solid fuel chemical rockets, because that's where most of the action is today. There is a new chapter (from my older edition) on electrical propulsion.
The book is suitable for use as a textbook for either a one or two term course, or as an introductory book to an engineer now moving into the field, or as a reference book for the experienced. It is especially good to use when you need to come up to speed on some area of the business where you don't normally work.
The one weakness of the book is the lack of discussion on computers either in terms of engine control systems or of the design software that is avaiable. Next revision I guess.

I have loved rocket propulsion in all its forms (real and imagined) since I was following the Apollo 11 mission on television. This book will help you with every aspect of rocketry whether for direct professional relevance, hobbyist development or whether you dream with many of us of solving the problems that will allow us (as so eloquently put by the late Carl Sagan) to "dip our toes in the cosmic ocean". I believe we must swim between the stars and the nuts and bolts foundations for doing it are in this book. Go get it. Lets do it.
Rocket Scientists Use It Too.......2006-11-17
I started work with a rocket design group fresh out of a MS in mechanical engineering. One of the first things everybody told me was to pick up a copy of Sutton. It's a good thing I did, because I immediately started referring to it for just about every project I worked. After just a few months it became a dog eared, marked, and well used reference.
It's a few years later now, and I don't work with rockets full time any more. I've forgotten enough of the details that today when I was explaining a bit of rocketry to a coworker, out came Sutton again. It's still a great book.

This was a required test for a rocket propulsion class, but it has become an invaluable resource for many classes. Purchased for at least 20% less than other outlets.
A Must-Have Textbook for every Aerospace Engineer.......2004-03-27
This is the single best book on rocket propulsion systems, covering both liquid and solid rocket engines, hybrid rocket systems, and a dedicated chapter on electric propulsion. The authors include excellent illustrations and graphs to enhance the text, and practical examples which help the reader to grasp the theory. After loaning a copy of this book for over two years from my library, i finally bought it! Definitely recommended to all engineers and scientists who want to expand into the area of rocket propulsion.

Simply the best there is.......2006-06-16
This book is simply the best nonlinear FEA book out there. While most other books stop at the Total and Updated Legrangian formulations, this book goes way beyond that and teaches you some really advanced FEA techniques. The treatment of material is thourough and meticulous. Unlike what some other reviewers have said, this book is NOT a bunch of research papers thrown together, but is very well organized with consistent notation and timely explanations. This book is ideal for self study as well as reference for scientists and engineers. However, watch out for some typos that may throw you off-track. This is the only complaint I have about the book.
A good reference, but need further revision.......2004-10-15
The approach taken by this book is neither too mathematical, which makes the subject untractable, nor too engineering-lized, which missed out important insights. I am an engineer with a master degree in mechanical engineering. I found this book very readable, given enough coffine and a good mood. The subjects covered are self-contained.
However this book needs further improvement to be called classic. First, contact-impact chapter is palely presented. LS-DYNA theory manual provides a more complete description on this subject. Secondly, typos need to be reduced. Thirdly, the language is somewhat boring. Fourthly, I would like to see a Latex-ized version of this book.
The new gold standard.......2004-06-02
This has got to be the best book out there now on how to construct nonlinear FE. For me, the book was worth it even if just for the lucent review of nonlinear continuum mechanics.
Distinguished.......2003-04-15
By systematic way of intuition, the authors successfully grasp the philosophy of nonlinear phenomena. The methods of explanation in TL, UL, and ALE are obviously pronounced. If the books of Prof. Zienkiewicz and Prof.Taylor, Prof.Bathe are treasures of FEM, this book is worth in that place.

Though I had been somehow prepared by the positive comments of the other reviewers before buying this book, I must admit that I was impressed from the very beginning of study. Non linear FE is a "hard" subject, however the authors proceed in the most systematic and comprehensive way, addressing the most important aspects of non linear fem analysis in a single volume. The book contains everything you need from the field of Continuum Mechanics and is ideal for self - study. Valuable references, handy summary boxes and exercises at the end of each chapter are included.

Solid and useful.......2007-09-27
I have used this book to teach plotting to creative writing students, so my review is based on how well absolute novice writers respond to the ideas he puts forth in this book. On the whole, they respond positively. Once they grasp the standard three-act structure of a plot, they find his scene-sequel formula to be IMMENSELY helpful figuring out how to work out options for rising action. A few students complain that they don't like being taught a *formula*, and it seems a few reviewers have that gripe as well.
I'll say here what I say in class. First, if a formula happens to have been successful (as you can see if you break down almost any movie or popular novel), eh, maybe just this once it might be worth your time to learn it. Just file it away somewhere or something. Second, just because Bickham advocates a linear tic-tock scene-sequel way of composing your plot, that does not mean, nor does Bickham anywhere say, that you have to TELL the story in simple lockstep straightforward chronology. Once you have the basic idea of what's going to happen and why, you can start the story whenever you darn well please. You can start just at the climax, if you want, and tell the story through disconnected flashbacks, so that readers have to piece together the shards into the picture of the story arc. You can tell the story as an epistolary novel. You can tell it by varied protagonists. The only limit is imagination of the author. If you hate this book because you can't figure out new and creative ways to apply his basic formula, that doesn't necessarily equate with the *book* being worthless.
My students are grateful because (and remember they're all fledgling writers) this book's ideas give them handles to grasp when they sit down to write. I don't advocate the whole 'scene goal clearly stated to the reader' thing Bickham states, but if you as the WRITER have no idea what the scene goal is, or how things are going to wind up worse for the protagonist, chances are pretty high there will be a high Flounder Quotient in your plotting. All in all, it's worth your time and money as long as you are willing to view it as a plotting aid device and not the Magic Potion of Writing. It's a skeleton upon which one can reliably hang decent stories: my students are invariably impressed at the end of the semester both at their own ingenuity in storytelling and how they managed to create a story that *moves* and unfolds logically.
You make it sound like it's a bad thing.......2007-09-27
I have this book as well as Dwight Swains Techniques of the Selling Writer, I am working through them both as I learn fiction writing, hopefully for a profit. Yes, I hope to make money off of writing; it seems there are a few reviews here making profit sound like an evil thing and this book, the spawn of that evil.
If I needed to write "important" books, or to help the world with my writing, I wouldn't want this book, I'd want an MFA. This is about fun, writing fun and reading fun, at least to me anyway. I want books I wright to be fun, fun to write and fun to read. I'll take "Pot Boiling" as some other reviews have stated this is, I'm quite content to leave windmill tilting to more suitably equipped, perhaps better educated individuals. I want to learn to spin yarns, sturdy yarns that sell, this book seems a good place for me to start. For me, someone looking to tell a better story, Bickham and Swain are helping out a lot.
In the eye of the beholder........2007-08-18
I think it is the best book I have (out of the dozen or so books on writing). It depends on where you are as a writer and what your strengths and weaknesses are. My writing seems most creative when not following structure, a few scenes here and there, until a strong enough idea develops. At this point I need to start thinking about structure before I continue. I work out the general ideas for the Beginning, middle, and end until I have a one page synopsis. In the next step I work on the characters as much as possible, this is where my primary ideas for plotting the story comes in - through the characters. I expand on the synopsis until I have a more detailed roadmap with room for creativity. This is where I begin to think about scenes, and Jack M. Bickham gives you the best questions to ask about your scene and what to employ into it. This book has improved the way my mind structures the scene internally and thus my scenes are much clearer and focused. It is not a matter of following his steps implicitly, but using his ideas when writing your scene. This book has more gold nuggets than any other book I have read for scene structure. Just take a look at the dedication page to Dwight V. Swain, another great book. I only wish I had Dwight's book when I started writing in the 1980's and I wish I knew about Jack M. Bickham when his book came out in the 1990's. These books have been written at a deeper level and requires rereading and thoughtfulness. I am not saying they are not without its imperfections. Anyway, just my opinion.
Useful in Both Cases.......2007-08-16
Scene & Structure is a useful read, even if you hate it. Disagreeing with Bickham's thriller writing style, with his disaster-in-every-scene, and his overall, nearly set in stone approach to telling a story will give you plenty of wonderful examples of exactly what NOT to do in your fiction if you dislike this work.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for direction in your writing and lack any sort of structure whatsoever, reading this will also help. You will make sense of the typical flow of a story, most notably the parrying and jousting between scenes and sequels and get general (very, very general) plotting tips. Bickham's advice will give you a basic starting point to develop your work and eventually break his rules. And for the sake of trees, your time, and the time of your readers, please do break them.
A Writing Essential.......2007-07-01
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to structure their novel, short story, work of fiction, etc.
In all great work of fiction there is a pattern: every thing in it has a reason for being. Scene and Structure shows you how to recognize that pattern and shows you how to create that pattern in your writing. This is so important in writing great fiction, especially literary fiction.
How should you pace your story? How should you introduce and develop the conflict? It's just amazing, when you learn the info in this book and use them, after a while it becomes so easy noticing what a scene needs more of, how to improve it, etc, that writing with a pattern becomes almost instinctive.

This book is not great, but it's not awful. It has useful information that people need to know when writing. I especially like the section on Latin terms in the back of the book. Although I find it odd that it doesn't include "nota bene" or "lingua franca."

Not of much help.......2006-10-29
This book attempts to emulate The Elements of Style by Strunk and White but it doesn't even come close. It is poorly written and organized and is likely to confuse its readers. It fails to provide good examples in many cases. Explanations which should be simple are often quite complex.
I minored in English and am an experienced well published writer but I found this book of little assistance. It is not particularly useful for teachers. I can not think of anyone who would find this book useful.
For anyone trying to improve their grammar or even learn it I would suggest Checking Your Grammar by Marvin Terban which is a superb book.
A clear-cut reference........2005-01-08
I like this book because it "cuts to the chase." It's a lean book with a lot of instructional power. It simply delivers fact without the fluff.
A Stiff, Lifeless, Taciturn Overview.......2004-06-02
"The Elements of Grammar," intended as a companion for the excellent "The Elements of Style," suffers from a stiff, lifeless presentation that detracts mightily from the grammatical advice. The format of the book itself hinders the reader: the type is too small and relentlessly the same; the examples that follow the rules are set in even smaller type; no visual guides or aids link paired columns of text, making one's eyes climb up and down; and the chapters lack any internal navigational devices to help the reader find his or her way.
The author's explanations lack the authority required for this book to find a spot on my desk. For instance, we are told that a comma may be used to separate the month from the year when the date is omitted, but that current usage permits writing the month and year without a comma between them. I prefer the definitive advice in "The Chicago Manual of Style," which indicates no comma is needed when a month and year appear without the date.
In discussing the use of colons to introduce a list, the author allows a colon to follow a verb, bringing the sentence to a dead stop and interrupting the connection of verb and object or complement.
References to the Government Printing Office Style Manual do not help her case. That style manual is hopelessly outdated and insular
In fairness, Ms. Shertzer delivers a no-frills, somewhat taciturn overview to grammar and usage and one could do much worse than to follow most of the advice here. But this book is not the first choice for a novice editor or young writer unless already thoroughly steeped in the rules and practice of grammar. And in that case, this book's usefulness would be minimal. Seasoned editors and writers would not find this book that useful and many no doubt have nearly new, little used copies of this book wedged into their reference shelves.
Concise & Comprehensive Reference.......2001-08-28
This is a handy, concise reference for everyday grammar. It would benefit everyone if more writers would refer to its rules. With the advent of e-mail, more and more Americans are writing every day, with less and less literacy. As to the "Business Grammar", please note the illustration. The word "business" is not in the actual title, and the book seems to have no special orientation toward business usage. It is, however, quite comprehensive, and should meet the needs of most writers - whether business, professional, or personal.

Excellent Study.......2004-08-05
Crisfield's first and second books are excellent sources for anyone from different disiplines. His success can be attributed to explaining the materials in their simple forms and to his notations that is easy to follow. Starting from 1D nonlinear truss elements to 3D beam-column elements, all concepts are explained in a similar way so once you are into it, it is easy to follow the text. I mostly studied his work on finite rotations, and arc-length algorithms.
Non-linear FEM for mere mortals........2000-07-17
Very elegantly written with excellent notation. Brings the implementaion of things like co-rotational FEM programming within the grasp of people with a mere engineering background. I especially liked the chapter on large rotations.

Excellent companion, but missing something important..........2007-03-28
To truly get the most out of this book, you need one of Rowena's dwindling number of students still left at Pratt teaching to stand over your shoulder. The exercises in this book can all produce amazing results in terms of beautiful abstract relationships but to "know" what is right or wrong with an object using this visual language really takes someone showing you what is wrong with a transition or how this proportion is too similar to that one or how this spacial relationship is not quite right. In the end, you need to know what is wrong in order to really be able to see what is right and it takes someone to show these things to you over and over again. The book is an excellent companion and record of Rowena's interesting and effective exercises, but it's difficult to use as a guide for someone not dialogging with one of her former students and even that is challenging because each one delivers her gospel of 3D a little differently.

This book is a nice window into a professional display of techniques and exercises that garner superior forms and shapes. I bought this book for an industrial design class, it was not mandatory, but completley necessary and helpful. i highly recommend it.
visual exercises - for serious designers.......2004-05-04
This is a technical book that is an attempt to teach what RRK developed over a lifetime obsession with visual compositions. She did one thing, over and over, refining it over a long and productive career at Pratt, in Brooklyn. As such, I believe that it would best be used in the classroom, rather than as a simple read for those who want to understand modern design. Being ignorent about issues in studio design - really doing it, rather than observing it like I do - I got a lot out of it. But I will need to refer to it and read through many more times to truly absorb the exercises. For what it is, the book is a masterpiece as an exercise in visual thinking and the method left its imprint on many of the greatest American designers from before WWII to the 1980s.
Recommended, but for designers rather than design critics.
A Good Guide.......2004-04-14
I agree with one of the reviewers in that the rules presented in this text should not be applied loosely and expected to produce "a beautiful design". As far as industrial design goes it still is not even so great. HOWEVER what it does teach is basic 3-dimensional design. There are lessons in here that anyone who works in a 3-d medium (interior, industrial, fashion, sculpture, etc) should be fluent in. I did the exercises and it has allowed me to get such a tighter grasp on my work and understand all the subtle effects I can produce in it. It is also invaluable to me as a reference guide. Study this book in order to help develop your sense of 3 dimensional structure and compositions but not as a base for design education (only because design incorporates much more than "beauty").

In this book, David Temperley addresses a fundamental question about music cognition: how do we extract basic kinds of musical information, such as meter, phrase structure, counterpoint, pitch spelling, harmony, and key from music as we hear it? Taking a computational approach, Temperley develops models for generating these aspects of musical structure. The models he proposes are based on preference rules, which are criteria for evaluating a possible structural analysis of a piece of music. A preference rule system evaluates many possible interpretations and chooses the one that best satisfies the rules.
After an introductory chapter, Temperley presents preference rule systems for generating six basic kinds of musical structure: meter, phrase structure, contrapuntal structure, harmony, and key, as well as pitch spelling (the labeling of pitch events with spellings such as A flat or G sharp). He suggests that preference rule systems not only show how musical structures are inferred, but also shed light on other aspects of music. He substantiates this claim with discussions of musical ambiguity, retrospective revision, expectation, and music outside the Western canon (rock and traditional African music). He proposes a framework for the description of musical styles based on preference rule systems and explores the relevance of preference rule systems to higher-level aspects of music, such as musical schemata, narrative and drama, and musical tension.

Music cognition is an interdisciplinary field that aspires to account for the underlying mental processes that occur when people listen to music. The author presents a computational theory of music cognition that is deeply influenced by "A Generatve Theory of Tonal Music". As in GTTM, the author of this book tries to explain the cognition of common-practice music by a system that generates structural descriptions from musical "surfaces". The author's theory consists of a number of preference rule systems each containing well-formedness rules that define a class of structural descriptions and also preference rules that specify an optimal structural description for a given input. The preference rule systems are presented for six aspects of musical structure: metre, phrasing, counterpoint, harmony, key, and pitch spelling. The author then presents his theory as computer programs that take piano-roll representations of music as inputs and extract information about structure according to his models. The author then evaluates his computer models using objective tests. For example, he tested his metre program on a group of 46 excerpts from a theory workbook, comparing the output of the program with the scores of the excerpts.
This book is a worthy heir to "A Generative Theory of Tonal Music" that avoids its failings via computer implementation and objective, quantitative testing. The breadth and depth of the book is impressive. The author convincingly argues that the preference rule approach can be used not only to explain aspects of musical listening, but also features of musical style perception, composition, and performance. He also makes a good effort to apply his theory to musical styles other than common practice music, such as rock music and traditional African music.
The book has a few weaknesses. For example, the notion that pitch spelling is used to determine harmony and key seems to be the reverse of what happens in perception. Also, the author's melodic phrase structure model is under-developed and ad hoc. Finally, the author does not compare the performance of his resulting models with that of other systems. In spite of these weaknesses, the book is required reading for anyone who is interested in computational music analysis and cognition. The reader should already be well-versed in music theory and also have an understanding of computer programming and dynamic programming techniques in particular to get the most from this book.
The author's computer programs are written in C and are freely available on the web. You can find them by typing "The Melisma Music Analyzer" into Google and selecting the first web address in the list. The author explains how non-linear techniques can be used to solve practical problems. It will also include examples from an up-dated non-linear finite element computer program incorporating the advanced solution procedures.

Excellent book - fills a long standing gap.......2000-04-07
I feel the book really fills a long standing gap in this field, since nonlinear analysis (especially geometric nonlinear analysis) is always treated slightly ambiguously by other authors. The book is extremely clear and consistent in its manner of explanation. However, at some places, the author has used excessive mathematical derivations which may not contribute so much to understanding.
