Book Description

The first broad account offering a non-mathematical, unified treatment of solid state chemistry. Describes synthetic methods, X-ray diffraction, principles of inorganic crystal structures, crystal chemistry and bonding in solids; phase diagrams of 1, 2 and 3 component systems; the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of solids; three groups of industrially important inorganic solids--glass, cement, and refractories; and certain aspects of organic solid state chemistry, including the ``organic metal'' of new materials.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An uneven treatment; a book from a ceramist's perspective.......2005-05-17

Where this book is good, it is very good. Where it is isn't, it is badly dated and incomplete. I suspect that the book's shortcomings stem from West's sole authorship - he just doesn't know much about a broad swath of this subject. A subject as broad and interdisciplinary as solid state chemistry demands a text written by at least two (but not more than three) knowledgeable solid state chemists. West needs a coauthor!

The good parts. Synthesis of bulk solids, particularly as applied to oxides. Interpretation of Phase diagrams & Ionic Conductivity and Solid Electrolytes - best treatments in any introductory text. Glasses & Cement and Concrete - not complete of course, but good introductions.

The adequate parts: Most of the material related to characterization of solids. Diffraction, spectroscopy, crystal symmetry, crystal defects, ionic bonding. Not terribly exciting treatment or imaginative in coverage, but adequate.

Completely dated - obsolete even when the book was first published: all subjects requiring a quantum-mechanical treatement, e.g., magnetism, electrical conductivity, all treatment of bonding other than ionic or hydrogen-bonded systems.

2 out of 5 stars A common but expensive text about solid chemistry.......2001-12-07

I couldn't consider the best book I've read about solid chemistry but it is complete for graduate students. The crystaline structure is well treated but it's poor in the quantum approach. My teacher loves this book as she was a student of Anthony West but I don't like it. I bought it 'cause I was robbed and I lost this book and now I need to get it back to the library.

1 out of 5 stars Prepare to mortgage your house for this book.......2001-06-03

This is an EXCELLENT, comprehensive book on solid state chemistry. However, the expense of this book is a joke. Save yourself the money, and check it out at a university library.

5 out of 5 stars It was the best of books, it was the worst of books.......1998-07-25

Attending the University of Aberdeen from 1990-94, it was my pleasure to receive solid state chemistry lectures from the author, Professor West.

He was always very clear, concise, and helpful, if terribly busy.

The book was the magnum opus of the Inorganic Department, and was widely used throughout. It covers a very large range of topics, and is rather impressive for its clarity and breadth of information.

Despite the rather phenomenal expense, the book is well worth the price FOR THOSE involved in theoretical and practical applications of solid state chemistry. In my current work as a solid state research chemist, the book has proven an invaluable resource and without peer.

Highly recommended.

Book Description

This well-illustrated and well-referenced book provides a systematic introduction to the modern aspects of the topographical stereochemistry of coordination compounds, which are made up of metal ions surrounded by other non-metal atoms, ions and molecules.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It is a good book but difficult to read........1999-04-18

Zelewsky's book covers an important topic which is typically not covered in detail in graduate classes in inorganic chemistry. Although the book is somewhat difficult to read, which is probably because the author is not a native English speaker, it is worth wading through.

5 out of 5 stars A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry........1997-11-19

The book explains the modern aspects of stereochemistry of coordination compounds including nomenclature, chirality elements, isomer counting, helices, chains and knots, gives an account of the historical background and includes many 3D-figures as stereograms. All figures and additional material are available on the internet. The book is well suited for undergraduates, post-graduates and especially lecturers who can benefit from the supplementary material available. Just colors are missing - but this for the sake of a really affordable price.

Book Description

"Should be on every surface chemist's reading list." -Spectroscopy (on the Fifth Edition)

Bridging the methodologies of "wet" and "dry" surface chemistry to present surface chemistry as a single broad field, Physical Chemistry of Surfaces, Sixth Edition retains its position as the standard work of surface science. This heavily revised and updated edition provides thorough coverage for students and professionals. New features of the Sixth Edition include:
* Expanded treatment of films at the liquid-air and liquid-solid interfaces, with contemporary techniques and macromolecular films
* Techniques for tunneling and atomic force scanning microscopes
* In-depth coverage of heterogeneous catalysis, including the case of CO on metals
* Increased emphasis on the flexible surface and restructuring of surfaces when adsorption occurs
* A new chapter on macromolecular films

The book begins with the basics of the physical chemistry of liquid-gas and liquid-solid interfaces, including electro-chemistry, long-range forces, and the various methods of spectroscopic and structural study of surfaces. These are followed by descriptive treatments of topics such as friction, lubrication, adhesion and emulsion, foams, and aerosols. Closing chapters present a quantitative approach to physical and chemical adsorption of vapors and gases as well as heterogeneous catalysis.

For senior-level undergraduates and graduate students, each chapter presents the basic surface chemistry of the topics with full derivations, end-of-chapter problems, and reviews of recent advances. This book is also an excellent reference for professional chemists interested in applying surface chemistry to their work.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great book for reference.......2006-08-03

I had this book as my textbook for my "surface science" class. It is a great book for reference though it does take time and effort to comb through chapters to find what you need. A lot of detailed paper-review-style chaptors which is great for research while it is a little bit overwhelming to people without any physical chemistry background.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview or starting point.......2004-06-17

How useful and valuable this book is largely depends on what you expect from it. This book provies an overview of the extremely broad field of surface chemistry. As a starting point to learning about that field, this book is excellent. There is validity to the criticisms offered by some other reviewers of this text. The derivations often don't give enough detail and there's not much help in the way of example problems, which can make it difficult for the student to use in a classroom setting. Do not expect extremely detailed and thorough treatments of any particular area of surface chemistry. Nearly any chapter in this book could (and does) have entire texts (and courses) devoted exclusively to that one subject. What you can expect from this book is an introduction to the key areas of surface chemistry. The book is loaded with references to point the interested reader in the right direction for more detailed and thorough treatments of the variety of different areas of surface chemistry. For this reason, I have found it to be a good starting point for learning more about several subjects. In short, this book is excellent if you want a broad overview of the field or need a place to start learning about a particular area of surface chemistry. It's not worth much if you are looking for extremely in depth, thorough treatments of specific areas of surface chemistry.

1 out of 5 stars Physical Chemistry of Surfaces.......2001-11-12

I used this book as a text in my class 'Physical Chemistry of Liquids, Interfaces, and Colloids'. This book is not a textbook. My students are complaining all the time about the presentation of topics as well as the extent of derivations, interpretations, and lack of examples. I must admit that I have made a mistake for choosing this text for my course. If you are planing to use it as a text, please go through a few of the derivations and you will notice that the book offers very little to a student.

1 out of 5 stars The new edition is a lot worse than the earlier editions.......1999-05-27

I have found the book very difficult to follow. The book reads more like a research paper than a textbook, in both style and content (for example, there are too many references, most of which are completely unnecesary). Many symbols are left undefined. There are many gaps in the derivations. Many concepts (e.g. the Maragoni effect) are introduced out of proper context. I would not recommend it to anybody. Get an earlier edition if you can.

1 out of 5 stars To many references.......1998-11-17

It was the text book of a discipline in my graduate couse. I and my friends had too many troubles with it, the text is dry with to many references. The text simply order you to look for some reference, instead of explain some obscure part of theory. We only understood many of the problems after Adamson sent the problems answer. The solve some problems we must looked for some references cited in the text, and that took a lot of time. During the couse we used to say that some problems are impossible to solve, others you don't give the correct answer, and the last ones you solve correctely, but you don't understand the why you solve by that way. We used the 5th edition until chapter 10, than we tried another book.

    Book Description

The Chemistry of the Actinide and Transactinide Elements is a contemporary and definitive compilation of chemical properties of all of the actinide elements, especially of the technologically important elements uranium and plutonium, as well as the transactinide elements. In addition to the comprehensive treatment of the chemical properties of each element, ion, and compound from atomic number 89 (actinium) through to 109 (meitnerium), this multi-volume work has specialized and definitive chapters on electronic theory, optical and laser fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, organoactinide chemistry, thermodynamics, magnetic properties, the metals, coordination chemistry, separations, and trace analysis. Several chapters deal with environmental science, safe handling, and biological interactions of the actinide elements.

The Editors invited teams of authors, who are active practitioners and recognized experts in their specialty, to write each chapter and have endeavoured to provide a balanced and insightful treatment of these fascinating elements at the frontier of the periodic table. Because the field has expanded with new spectroscopic techniques and environmental focus, the work encompasses five volumes, each of which groups chapters on related topics. All chapters represent the current state of research in the chemistry of these elements and related fields.

        Book Description

Because of the importance of the hydrogen bond, there have been scores of insights gained about its fundamental nature by quantum chemical computations over the years. Such methods can probe subtle characteristics of the electronic structure and examine regions of the potential energy surface that are simply not accessible by experimental means. The maturation of the techniques, codes, and computer hardware have permitted calculations of unprecedented reliability and rivaling the accuracy of experimental data. This book strives first toward an appreciation of the power of quantum chemistry to analyze the deepest roots of the hydrogen bond phenomenon. It offers a systematic and understandable account of decades of such calculations, focusing on the most important findings. This book provides readers with the tools to understand the original literature, and to perhaps carry out some calculations of their very own on systems of interest.

          Book Description

Despite the central role anionic species have been shown to play in both mineralogical and biological processes, until now there have been no comprehensive references dealing exclusively with anionic coordination chemistry. Written by a group comprising pioneering researchers from the United States and Europe, Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions covers all theoretical and practical aspects of anion complexation, from thermodynamics and structure to catalysis and various applications. The authors begin with the 1967 discovery of halide inclusion by bicyclic diammonium receptors and trace the development of anion coordination chemistry through the most recent developments in the field. Topics covered in detail include:
          * Pre-supramolecular anion chemistry
          * Natural and artificial molecules that can act as anion receptors
          * Preorganization and chemical design
          * Structural, thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photochemical aspects of anion coordination
          * Computer methods for receptor design and multiple host-guest relations
          * Anion receptor catalysis and molecular recognition and transformation of nucleotides

Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions is a valuable professional resource for organic and inorganic chemists, analytical chemists, biotechnologists, pharmaceutical scientists, and environmental chemists. It also serves as an excellent graduate-level text for students of molecular recognition, catalysis, and biomimetic chemistry.

            Book Description

This book represents first non-edited book on the subject of metal catalysed reactions in ionic liquids and covers the literature from its origins until early 2005. Following a general introduction to the field of biphasic/mutliphasic catalysis, the synthesis, functionalisation and fundamental properties of ionic liquids relevant to catalysis are described. In the ensuing chapters catalysed reactions are discussed according to their type, encompassing hydrogenation, hydroformylation, oxidation, C-C coupling reactions, metathesis, dimerisation, polymerisation and more. Trends, generalisations, advantages and disadvantages of ionic liquids for specific reaction types are discussed. Specific processes such as supported ionic liquid phase catalysis, continuous processes using CO 2 extraction and nanoparticle catalysis are covered. The book should be of interest to all those working in catalysis/green chemistry, in particular, to advanced level undergraduate and graduate students and all those researching or contemplating research in bi- or multiphasic catalysis using ionic liquids.
