In many ways, The pH Miracle is reminiscent of an earlier generation of diet books. Much of the focus is on an intestinal cleansing program, followed by a diet that is 70 to 80 percent vegetables, coupled with a tremendous selection of supplements that authors Robert and Shelley Young recommend to everyone, no matter what their age, gender, or state of health.
The Youngs point their fingers at candida as a main culprit in the poor health of many people. Unfortunately, they back up their claims with only vague references, such as "a 1991 study" and "a leading cancer researcher." Many readers may wish for more specific evidence, but instead will have to make do with enthusiastic recommendations, alphabetized lists of vegetables, and pleasing chapters with vegetarian recipes that taste good no matter how you feel about the diet as a whole.
Sprinkled throughout the book are short testimonials of people who were able to reverse cancer, improve their digestion, and lower their cholesterol by following these recommendations, and it's hard to argue with the cholesterol-lowering results that a 70 percent vegetable diet will achieve. Still, the medical value of much else in the book remains hotly contested, and as always, it's wise to check with your doctor before starting off in search of miracles. --Jill Lightner

excellent information.......2007-09-29
there's information here that may seem odd, but it does check out with common sense. I think there are major benefits to trying out the ideas, although can't get myself to go whole hog on all of them
The PH Miracle is Truly an Eye-Opener.......2007-09-25
I've been following the very basic principles of this book for about 7 months now. Over the course of this time, and not following it as closely as I should, thus far I have still shed over 30 pounds with very little effort. I had reached the point where I had tried diet after diet with unsatisfactory results. The PH balance theory, as described by Dr. Young, made a lot of sense to me. I figured at the very least to test the water at home (we have a well system and the PH is now balanced to just above 7) and the water at work (bottled--it tested at 6.0). I use baking powder (one alternative suggested) to raise the PH of the drinking water at work. This simple change has to be credited for a lot of the success I've had.
Another change I have made is to try to avoid any artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame, suclarose, and nutrisweet. The calories in sugar (yes, an acidic no-no) are still better for you than man-made chemicals which are toxic to your cells, and frankly if you consider a teaspoon of sugar has about 18 calories, if memory serves, it's still a fairly negligible amount of calories versus the questionable alternatives to sugar.
The PH Miracle book, and the companion books by Dr. Young, is an easy to follow guideline. For me, it certainly has been a miraculous find. I plan to re-read it and incorporate more of the suggested changes into my diet.
If only everyone read this book..........2007-08-27
....America would be a better place to live. Somewhere in history the propaganda machine kicked out important nutrition information that was largely based on private interests. And now, here we are; sick, tired, diseased and frustrated with life.
This book makes sense. Before reading, however, question your beliefs...and not just the ones you WANT to question...question all of them. Then, you'll find it easy to accept Dr Young's suggestions. The most obvious one to question was that about breakfast....I don't know why breakfast is some over-sugar'ed bowl of cereal or pop-tart in America.
Start with the cleanse. It'll reset your sugar cravings and help you understand the mental component of food, eating and hunger. You'll find during a cleanse that you have more energy than ever, feel light and free, and yet still, somewhere in the back of your mind, some part of you BEGS for food. It's like a little monster that exists within your mind...but don't worry, after very little time, it is starved to non-existence, along with you belief that eating food is in important part of your every day social life.
Read this book and then recommend it to others.
It Just makes Since.......2007-08-13
We are now going on five weeks on Dr.Young's ph miracle and its awesome. The whole family my children included have adopted Dr. Young's practices and we feel great. We have lost weight and inches off of our waist its truly a great way to live.
Too drastic.......2007-07-08
This book was not helpful to me in balancing my diet. It requires that you completely change your diet to eating grasses and stuff that you cannot find in my little town. I did not find it helpful at all.

Building on the success of their first book, the best-selling The pH Miracle, in this book Dr. Young and his wife turn their attention to what is considered by many health experts as America's number one health crisisthe growing numbers of people who are seriously overweight or obese. Contrary to other popular weight loss books, most notably those, such as The Atkins' Diet and The South Beach Diet, that tout a low-carbohydrate approach to achieving weight loss, the Youngs maintain that the primary culprit behind excessive weight gain, as well as many other health problems, is a chronic state of acidity in the body (a pH value below 7.1). Shifting the body's chemistry to a more alkaline pH, they maintain, will quickly and easily result in the loss of excess weight and the buildup of more lean muscle tissue.
The goal outlined by the Youngs in this book is to replace dieting with a 12-week, seven-step program that is intended to not only rejuvenate the entire body by replacing current blood cells with blood cells "at the peak of health," but also to create an ongoing lifestyle that will permanently keep off the pounds that were shed during the 12-week period. In addition to a rich section on eating tips to create more alkalinity in the body (complete with an extensive list of recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus), the book also covers the importance of adequate water drinking, proper exercise, important nutritional supplements, learning how to manage thoughts and emotions that can contribute to acidity, goal-setting, and, for optimum results, a two-week cleansing program. In support of the program, the book also includes a collection of testimonials from people who have achieved significant weight loss on the programfurther backed up by before-and-after photographs. With an increasing number of health professionals now emphasizing the importance of proper pH to overall health, the information this book presents is both timely and fairly easy to implement. Great book and information!.......2007-09-26
Anyone who wants to live a heathly life owes it to their self to due some research. There are many reasons why Ph is so veyr important, there are doctors in other countries treating (curing...) cancer with Ph methods and yet the good ole' American Medical system doesn't allow any information on products that they can not profit from. Do your own research and you will confirm this.
Yes the book's diet will be extreme to most people, well duh, that's why most are overwieght, sick and dying because this is not their diet, this isn't on the fast food menus and no it's in a TV dinner, ye sit requires effort, you you can listen to the everyday doctors and just take some new pill to suppress the symtoms and get worse.. Eat healthly live longer, your choice you decide!
Too many loop holes!.......2007-09-15
When i first started reading this book, i was intrigued, but now not so much. The book is a good read, but I believe Dr. Young needs to do more research and no be so bias. Being a vegatarian is not right for everyone. For instance, O blood types need meat for optimal health(organic is always the best), where as A's do not do well with meat. Those who got good results from following his style of eating may have gotten great results because they are A types which is 40% of the population in the world.
Also, he suggests taking clay during the 2 week cleanse, which is great but has no idea how and when it should be taken. Clay needs to be taken away from other supplements and food otherwise the clay may bind to the minerals and vitamins and expel them out of the body. Also, avacados are a great source of nutrition, but not for all blood types.
For those of you who don't believe in the eating right for your blood type should do the research and see that the priniple was and is applied to OM(Oriental medicine) which is at least 4000 years old. The koreans use it to, who are aware of it.
The thing that really pissed me off is how Dr. Young acts like only his products are the best. He defitnetly is a great business man, who needs to continue educating himself in order to deliver correct information to the people.
the ph miracle for weight loss.......2007-08-24
This book is very informative about how our bodies are supposed to be alkaline and how putting so many acidic foods in our bodies causes inbalances that can lead to all kinds of health problems. Talks about how to reverse an acidic body, become healthy and lose weight. Very realistic before and after photographs. Not models. Makes a lot of sense and is very easy to read. Has great recipes as well. Very important book
pH Miracle - great book.......2007-08-23
Dr. Young is rather extreme in his views, totally against the grain with regards to the American diet (which is pathetic - look at how obese people are becoming!); but I feel great even just beginning to adjust my pH level using his recommendations. I may not become a total vegan, but maybe so eventually. I love the info in this book. I'm thinking that a vast majority of Americans don't really 'know' what is healthy and is not. It is straight forward, easy to comprehend, and leaves no room for justifying poor health habits to yourself. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to look and feel better -and who actually are willing to DO something about it.

I had cancer, diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and high cholesterol. I was 285 lbs. I was taking all kinds of medacations and getting worse all the time.
After reading the book and following it's instructions for 6 months I,m off all my meds and I now weigh 200 lbs. The reason I ordered so many copies of this book is I'm sending the book to family members and close friends. The pH Miracle for Weight Loss: Balance Your Body Chemistry, Achieve Your Ideal Weight
Book Description
Over the last five years, there has been an explosion of bestselling acid/alkaline based diets. These have ranged from weight loss to diabetes management. While hundreds of thousands of people have gone on this diet that balances the pH level of your body, they have had to put up with the limited food guides contained in each book. Now, health experts Dr. Susan Brown and Larry Trivieri have created a complete resource for people wanting to widen their food choices. The Acid/Alkaline Food Guide offers dieters an easy-to-follow guide to the most common foods that influence your body's pH levels.
The book begins by explaining what the acid/alkaline of your body has to do with the acid/alkaline influence of foods. It then explains how the pH of foods, once eaten, may change in your bodyas citric acid fruits, once digested, become alkaline. As complicated as this process is, the authors provide the guidelines for the analysis of the foods covered in the book. This section is then followed by a listing of thousands of foods and their acid/alkaline ranges. Included are insets and groups that can help the reader better direct their food searches.
This is the first complete acid/alkaline food guide to include today's modern diet. It will quickly become the first resource to turn to when preparing meals or ordering food.

Perfect.......2007-10-02
The book has just enough scientific information to prove the point without more than a person can plow through. Fast reading, very informative. The chart in the back of the book is really invaluable.
Acid/Alkaline Quick Reference.......2007-09-02
This was the best book so far on the importance of pH balance of acid/alkaline in the body. It was a quick easy read, that nets out the specific topic, and implications as well as suggestions to correct the problem. If you are a follower of the acid/alkaline balance, you will want to get this book to add to your collection. It is a must have.
Clear & Excellent.......2007-08-31
This little book is nearly perfect. Starts with 75 pages of theory & then 100 pages of tables of foods. It is short enough to be immediately useful, scientific enough to please fussy me, and complete enough to make me wish I hadn't read "The pH Miracle" (the pH Miracle fails on being scientific).
Not too hot, not too cold; just right!
The acid-alkaline food guide.......2007-08-25
I have been using this book everyday to make food choses that are healthy. I now know that I need more foods that create an alkaline effect in my body, since our blood needs to be 7.3 to 7.4 ph range for us to live. I can now create healthy meals by following this guide. It is extremely helpful.
Good Quick Resource Guide.......2007-07-20
After discovering I had a serious acid problem. My next question was, "What foods are alkaline?". This book is a great quick reference guide. It makes you think twice before putting something in your mouth!

Acid-Base, Fluids, and Electrolytes Made Ridiculously Simple (MedMaster Series)
ASIN: 0071346821 |
Book Description
This superbly written text gives students, residents, and practitioners the edge in understanding the mechanisms and clinical management of acid-base disorders. Presents the core information to understand renal and electrolyte physiology, and reviews the treatment rationale for all major acid-base and electrolyte disturbances. The entire text is exhaustively revised, and now includes questions and answers in each chapter.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book For All Levels.......2007-09-03
I am currently studying medicine and got this book to help get a handle on the renal system and acid-base topics. I found it easy to understand, with good detail and lots of extra information. The case studies are a great way to illustrate the different conditions. I would definitely recommend it if you are keen to get a handle on (or master) acid-base and electrolyte physiology and disorders.
Excellent introduction.......2007-04-12
An impressively lucid and detailed account of renal physiology, with a close focus on the clinical causes and implications. It is intensely practical, with up to date references (at time of publication) and sifting exerecises at the end of each chapter.
It is precisely what far too many 'nephrologists' have all but forgotten in their obsession with immunology, studying the aetiology of injury is all well, but without a text like this it's difficult to appreciate the intricacy, beauty and sheer majesty of renal physiology. Can you tell the difference between tubulo-glomerular feedback and glomerulotubular balance? - shame on the 'forensic pathologists' who can't! This book will provide rapid relief.
BURTON ROSE AGAIN IS EXCELLENT.......2006-08-19
FOR RESIDENT AND FELLOWS AS STAFF TOO, THE FIFTH EDITION OF BURTON ROSE IS EXCELLENT, COVERING BASIC CONCEPTS AS WELL AS ALL THE RECENT RESEARCH MEDICAL NEWS IN FHE FIELD OF FLUID AND ACID BASE PHYSIOLOGY.IT SHOULD BE RECOMENDED FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MEDICAL LIBRARY.
Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read.......2006-05-16
No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists. However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.
The best in its field.......2006-03-27
I found this book to be very useful in understanding the subject of acid base and electrolyte disorders. I recommend it for all physicians especially those working in emergency room, intensive and cardiac care units. In fact it is very helpful for all doctors working in the different clinical fields. It is simple and easily digested.
Book Description
A brief, highly readable book providing the clinician with a straightforward approach to solving even the most complex, acid-base, fluid, and electrolyte problems. Useful to medical students, interns and residents, nurses responsible for IV fluid therapy, and first year nephrology fellows
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-04-07
This book is awesome. It gets right to the point. Preston is incredible. He actually taught some of our acid-base lectures during renal, and they were some of the best lectures we have had. I highly recommend this book!
a simple "open mind" book.......2007-04-02
enjoing your reading
a practical and easy to understand little book which give you the key to approach first, and most important, a lot of true clinical problem and second, more heavy textbook abt the issues treated.
Your Lifesaver in Fluid & Electrolytes Ocean!.......2006-03-05
I purchased this book with some doubt, because you see a very high variability in these series. Now, i am very happy. Every medical student and resident gets frustrated with fliuid and electrolytes. Reading textbooks makes it worse. I have seen a lot of attendings and Nephrologists (!!) who are scared of this subject. This book can help you tremendously. It is written in a very simple language and gives you the proper approach to fluid and electrolyte problems. It is full of practical examples that you will see every day and shows you how to solve them. After reading this book, you will be confident enough to deal with electrolytes. Instead of replacing electrolytes blindly with K-Dur and Neutra-Phos and .... and not knowing what to do with Hyponatremia, you will have a nice framework in your brain to deal with them. And the best part: It is a small book. Don't hesitate to get it. You won't regret.
Good but not good enough!.......2005-09-13
This book does only provide some miner basic understanding of Na, K, and acid base pathophysiology and replacement. Other e-lytes such as magnesium, calcium, phosphor and especially the interaction of those is completely missing. The acid base part is ok for getting a basic understanding of whats going on.
Overall I would say that there much better options to spend your money on.
Practically Life savor for both you and patient.......2005-07-12
I hardly anytime would give "5" stars to any products, but this just blew my doubts and misunderstanding out to pieces. I don't want to sound too explicit, but actually it's better than sex when you understand something and everything come to senses.
I mean you out there tell me what other book can teach you so perfectly acid base balances, mixed disorder and anion gap acidosis? No other. Considering even residents who work in US don't know how to calculate electrolyte, this is a topic regarded lightly by students. But I don't think so. By giving wrong fluid to critical patient, is not a good story to tell. It's so critical we have to know it. And first time I felt this material to be easy.
One day I was so frustrated on some acid base question of mixed acid base disorder, and was frantically searching in google, yahoo, msn , or anything I can put my hands on to enlighten concept as how to calculate electrolytes but without avail. So frustrated I even couldn't sleep that night. I tried to forget but soon it came to my mind boggling unsolved calculation. Then I was sparkled to my mind that I bought this book long time ago and it might explain to me something better. Sooner opening the page than I was gobbling all I could gorge the materials. That night, after I've done doing all the problems in that little book, I said to myself, Oh boy, this is actually better than sex!
the beauty of this book is way the explanation is so step wise and gives you a smooth comprehension followed by problems which makes you sure that you get it.
I mean I looked everwhere..... Even the Harrison didn't have the slightest notion of practical calculation to what it appears complex electrolyte acid base balance, but this little book made it so simple that finally made me think to sue Harrison(well just joking..)
First time I bought this book, I didn't take it seriously and put it in back corner of bookshelves, but I was so glad I bought it. I'm telling ya, this is the only book can save your exam and your patient as well.

Customer Reviews:
Not what the title suggest.......2007-10-05
Although this book has some useful information it is not as the title suggest. It is not a "diet" book. I bought this book because my husband and I are trying to change our diet to a more PH balanced way of living. We have already found that by balancing the PH levels we can all but eliminated acid reflux. When I saw this book I thought it would have a list of alkaline and acidic foods and a diet plan to follow. This book is nothing more than testimony as to what vitamins you should take in order to achieve better health. The test that is referred to is nothing more than taking a supplement on an empty stomach, waiting for results and translating how red you are into the meat eater, grain eater or combo of the two. So again, while there is some useful information I would not have bought this book had I had a chance to flip through it before hand.
The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet.......2007-09-28
This book has such excellent research for a person who wants to have a happier healthy life from disease so there are good suggestions in how to change one's lifestyle for healthier living
Weight loss recipe is to eat acidic foods!.......2007-09-01
I have done extensive research in Acid Alkaline eating theories. I think this book should be called "Eating for Your Blood Type" instead of its Acid Alkaline title. They are two very different theories. The author talks a lot in the two beginning chapters about various supportive research for ridding your body of acids to try to improve your overall health. Then she provides a couple simple of tests (that may make you sick) to find out your metabolic type.
There is a thorough explanation of Dr. William Donald Kelley's theory of metabolic food typing from the 1970s. According to the book, Dr. Kelley has much luck in reversing chronic diseases based on his assumptions. The book suggests two options for quick tests to figure out your metabolic type: 1) Swallow 50 milligrams of niacin on an empty stomach. If, within a half-hour, your skin turns red and you feel very, very hot and itchy, he believes you have a meat-eating metabolism. Warmer and better color in your face, he believes you have a balanced metabolism. If you don't feel anything, he feels you have a grain-eating metabolism. 2) If you want to confirm the first test, he suggests you take 8 grams of vitamin C a day for 3 days in a row. If you feel depressed, lethargic, exhausted, and irritable, or if you are a woman and experience vaginal irritation, you suggests you have a meat-eating metabolism. If you don't notice a change, he suggests you have a balanced metabolism. But if you feel an improvement -- more energy, better quality of sleep -- he suggests you have a grain-eating metabolism.
Much of the rest of the book hinges on the diagnosis of the above tests -- which sound scary to put yourself through. I don't want to consciously make myself red, hot, itchy, depressed, lethargic, etc. So I felt cautious after reading this section in chapter 1.
I read chapter 2 and then went to the specific section of the book with my "medical condition" as suggested by the author. My condition is obesity. That chapter describes a case study of an obese 17-year-old girl for whom the author prescribed treatments. The girl, Cheryl, started off at 350 pounds. After following the author's advice, the girl stabilized at 270 pounds. The thing that alarmed me was the author's suggestions for weight loss. Here is her list from p. 72-73. She wants you to eat or use the following: Nearly raw potatoes, ice pack on lower abdomen, raw honey, raw milk and butter, raw beefsteak, avocadoes and bananas, Vitamin E, ChitoPlex, coconut and flaxseed oil, raw carrots, ACIDIC FOODS, bland foods, several small meals, blackstrap-lemon drink, ice water. I've capped the word "acidic foods" because it is in complete contradiction with the author's book subtitle "An Innovative Program for Ridding Your Body of Acidic Wastes". She wants you to eat acidic foods to reduce your hunger. But that is completely antithetical to the title of the book and the introduction. Why would I take in more acidic foods only to have to work to neutralize them and eliminate them later? Note that she pulls all her informaton from other doctors and does not have a medical degree herself. Her book jacket describes her as an "adjunct professor at City College in New York and an alternate health consultant". I wish I could talk to Cheryl and share with her some of the information I've gotten from other books on diet and nutrition. I'm sorry to say I think the author has given her some good advice and combined it with some very bad advice.
Buyer/Reader beware! I think this author should do some more research. I think this book could be very dangerous to the quality of health of anyone follows her advice 100%.
Not very useful.......2007-08-13
The author spends at least 80% of the book on specific inflictions which will make at least 75% of this book irrelevant to most readers. Very little information provided anywhere about the alkaline diet--more about "grain eating" vs. "meat eating" metabolisms and other unrelated material. Methinks the publisher named this book to sell more books, irregardless of the contents.
If you want a better idea about the tenants of the alkaline diet, including the pH effects of certain foods see books by Brown and Young.
The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet.......2007-07-18
As nasty as it may seem, our bodies are virtual garbage dumps. When we eat too much, or eat processed foods that our organs find hard to break down, our bodies can't work fast enough leaving waste within the body. Bacteria thrive in such environments. So begins the process of acidic waste collection in the body. The end result includes a wide range of medical problems from arthritis through insomnia to kidneys disease.
The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet looks to rebalance the system and remove this acidic waste from our system. The process is fairly complicated, mostly because each person's needs are different. Some individuals have a more acidic system while others have a more alkaline system. In each case, different diets and vitamin treatments are used to remove excess waste and bring the system back into stasis. Various tests that the reader can do for him or herself are included within the text enabling them to understand their particular issues and start to reduce these factors. Readers are also encouraged to see their homeopathic specialists for more in depth workups.
I am not really a vitamin person as I tend to like natural/organic alternatives. Therefore, I couldn't see myself sticking to this diet for any length of time. Nonetheless, I learnt a great deal from this book particularly the sections on ancestral diets and food allergies.
Book Description
A practical diet plan for restoring the acid-alkaline balance your body needs to experience optimum health
• Explains how acidification of the body contributes to disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema, and ulcers
• Categorizes food according to its acidifying or alkalizing effect on the body, rather than by chemical composition
• Contains food tables to help readers design the best diet for their health needs
To enjoy optimum health, our body needs balanced quantities of alkaline substances and acids. An imbalance can result in health problems ranging from minor skin irritations, chronic fatigue, back pain, and depression to arthritis, ulcers, and osteoporosis.
Most people consume an abundance of highly processed foods that acidify the body and, as a result, are afflicted with many of these ailments. Naturopath and detoxification expert Christopher Vasey shows how a simple change in diet to restore your acid-alkaline balance can result in a vast improvement in health.
Vasey provides easy test methods to determine your acid levels, how to interpret these test results, and ways to establish a proper diet to maximize your health. Rather than organizing alkaline and acid foods on the basis of their chemical composition, Vasey categorizes foods based on their actual alkalizing or acidifying effect on the body so that you can design a diet best suited for your particular health needs. He goes further to explain how some foods, such as fruits, can have either an alkalizing or an acidifying effect, depending on who eats them, and how to use alkaline supplements to support your dietary needs.

Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health by Vasey.......2007-09-03
Well organized & professionally written ... for a reasonably knowledgeable audience. I'm new to the subject and not put off by technical terms. The author explains them clearly. Incls. tables, resources, and an index. Good as an introduction and for later reference.
so so !.......2007-09-01
I was a little disappointed on this book..I give it 4 out of 10...I like Sang Whang 's book much better ! Reversing age ! its easier to Read and much better book !!! get Sang Whangs book !!!!!! you will love it !
excellent way to improve your health.......2007-08-23
Most diseases (bacteria)including cancer cannot live in an alkaline system.
As an RN, I highly recommend this as a lifestyle change.
It is not just a 'fad'. It can completely change your life.
Best Book on Topic At Time of Purchase.......2007-05-09
I bought this book about 3 years ago. At that time it was the best book I'd come across on this topic. The author clearly explains the basic concepts and clarifies some myths people may believe about what constitutes acidity and what doesn't. The book is brief, user friendly, and contains helpful lists.
Invaluable for people with sensitive systems !.......2007-02-15
I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue some years ago, and I have been suffering from bad digestive problems, insomnia and various other ailments for a long time.
This book has made a huge difference to my life. I came to it thinking I knew quite a lot about diet and nutrition, but it has opened my eyes. Most importantly, it has made me understand why some "healthy" foods that many nutritionists insist are "really good for you" make me feel unwell.
Of course asparagus, onions and garlic are "really good" for many people, but sadly they're not good for me. I feel unwell when I eat them, and Vasey is the first person who has given me an explanation that feels right: they are sulfurous vegetables, and sulfur being an acid, they can be hard to handle for a system that's become as weak and sensitized to acids as mine.
There were many other revelations. You come across so much conflicting advice, sometimes it's hard to know what to believe. Some people tell you to eat lots of fruit "because they're alkalizing". Others, like Young, tell you not to eat them "because of the sugar". Who do you believe ? Well, neither advice made sense to me because my own experience was different. How could fruit be alkalizing when I felt so unwell after eating most of them ? Yet how could it be because of the sugar since I was doing well on "sugary" bananas ?
Again, it is Vasey who has given me the answers: for some people fruit are alkalizing, for others they are acidifying. It depends on the person. Some people's systems aren't able to metabolize fruit acids, and therefore eating fruit can acidify them even more, but since the banana's acid content is too weak to cause acidification it is usually well tolerated by them. I believe Vasey is right because of personal experience. Tomatoes, too, make me feel unwell, and he confirms that they're very acidic. The list goes on.
In fact, this book has been one long confirmation of my "gut feeling". What a relief to finally find someone who's spelling out what my body has been telling me for years ! I just wish I'd listened to it sooner. Vasey is a godsend, and I believe he really knows what he's talking about.
So I'm puzzled by some of the other reviews here. One reader even claims that Vasey says soy is alkaline. Did we read the same book ? Vasey in fact says soy is a potent acidifier, it only becomes alkalizing if it is sprouted. It is Young who champions soy, not Vasey.
The supplement section in this book is indeed useless. The author is Swiss, and there is a tradition of taking alkalizing powders in continental Europe, where you can find them quite easily in the shops. It's not so easy here. I did try the mail order addresses mentioned, but the products didn't work for me. I even wonder how much Vasey actually had to do with the mail order addresses for the American edition of his book, as he would never have approved of some of the products on offer there. He would never have approved of a product that includes lots of phosphorus, for example, as it's simply too acidic for a sensitive system to cope with. So yes, this section is a weak point. It's not that big a deal, though. We have excellent calcium/magnesium citrate supplements in the shops here, and they do the trick for me.
It's also true that this book doesn't give you detailed eating plans and recipes the way some books do. What it does give you is a lot of invaluable information. Vasey understands that there will never be a "one size fits all" diet that works for everyone. Every'body' is different, and ultimately you have to find out for yourself what works for you. Nobody can do that for you.
Of course not everything in this book will be right for you, I don't eat dairy, for example. But Vasey has given me the information and confidence I needed to work out the right diet for ME.
The most important thing of all: listen to your body !
Book Description
The author of the successful The pH Miracle offers a revolutionary new diet and health program for the millions who suffer from either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes has become an epidemic in the United States with an estimated 17 million people diagnosed with the disease and millions more at risk. With attention focused on blood sugar and insulin levels, however, the underlying cause of all the devastation-excess acidity of the body-has been overlooked. A nationally known microbiologist and nutritionist changes all that with this diet and lifestyle plan designed specifically for people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. With advice on which foods to eat, which to avoid, and delicious recipes, as well as guidance on managing stress and exercising safely, Dr. Young's program balances the body's pH, controlling acidity and helping to reverse diabetes-or stop it before it starts. This remarkable plan can reduce and sometimes eliminate the need for insulin or oral medications. THE pH MIRACLE FOR DIABETES empowers readers to take control of their health, and feel better than they ever thought possible.

A Good Idea.......2007-01-10
The pH Miracle for Diabetes
By Robert O. Young, PhD, and Shelley Redford Young
Warner Books
© 2004
All persons who are diabetic, whether Type 1 or Type 2, or pre-diabetics ("impaired fasting glucose", meaning, BG readings from 110 - 126) like me, want to lead normal lives, eat "normal" things, be lethargic, and go about their business without regard to their BG readings. To place ourselves in such an arena, we all want a magic pill which will make us fit in with the lifestyles of 5/6th of the U.S. population. Unfortunately, no one has found such a pill, even though more and more books are written about the virtues of more and more pills, and new and improved dietary supplements.
Before I review this book, I must first give you a mini-review of The Acid Alkaline Food Guide, by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri, Jr., Squareone Publishers, © 2006. This book gives a much more concise and better description of what pH balance is, how it affects your health, and the possible consequences of not keeping ones system "in balance". pH means "potential for hydrogen", a term used in chemistry, which indicates whether a solution, fluid or compound is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. pH can be measured in our bodies by testing saliva and urine or blood (pH strips are available for the first 2 tests), and if we have a heavy concentration of hydrogen in our systems, we are "acid based". The scale goes from 0 to 14; to be healthy, we should have slightly alkaline, oxygen-rich arterial blood (7.365 to 7.45 is ideal) - a reading of 7.0 is neutral.
Oxygen rich systems (alkaline based) neutralize formation of acids which might prove to be harmful. To help us stay in the neutral zone, our bodies use calcium and protein from bones, and possibly other places, to pump more alkaline to our systems in order to neutralize formation of acids, so as to keep us in balance. After the passage of time, if we fail to keep our systems in balance, and we become acid based, our bone formation will be reduced, calcium will be lost in our urine (leading to kidney stone formation), proteins will breakdown causing our muscles to waste away, our systems will be unable to repair cells, tissues and organs fully, our systems will age at an accelerated pace, more free radicals will be produced, we will be subject to increased fluid retention, and so forth.
The American diet is centered around foods that create acid-base systems. Dr. Brown lists about 70 pages of foods we eat, and rates them according to whether the food is alkaline-forming or acid-forming. The first time I read through the list, I determined that I could not eat any food without running the risk of forming more acids in my system. To remedy this, Dr. Young would have me become a vegetarian, but Dr. Brown has an easier solution: eat more dark green vegetables than any other food group. She doesn't require me to give up meat or eggs or nuts, so long as 2/3rd of my plate contains foods that are alkaline-forming (such as kale, collard greens, asparagus, snap green beans, etc.).
Dr. Brown explains the basis for her conclusions. Our bodies have 3 methods of getting rid of unwanted "poisons", or acid forming chemicals, all of which are filtered through our bodies:
First, our lungs supply our bodies with much needed oxygen (as we breathe in), and dispel (exhale) carbon dioxide (the "burned" waste from our system - an inference might be made that aerobic exercise helps cleanse our system, because it requires lots of heavy breathing, which gives us a double dose of oxygen; in turn the CO2 expels the oxidized stuff we don't need);
Second, our kidneys filter unwanted sugars, and other waste products which we don't need (we rid our systems through urine - a preventative measure we can take is to drink lots of pure, and hopefully ionized or ozone rich water, which will keep our kidneys healthy, as well as supply needed oxygen to our systems); and
Third, our skin filters out other things, through our perspiration (which is also produced through exercise).
With this background in mind, we can have a better understanding of what Dr. Young advocates in his book. He noticed the correlation between acid based systems and diabetes, and concluded that if our systems are neutral, or slightly alkaline, our blood sugars would be "normal". As I have been checking my pH balance every morning, which I do before checking my BG reading, I can generally predict what my BG readings will be. If my system measures 7.0, which is neutral, my BG readings are pretty good (98 to 107). If my pH balance is 6.5, my BG readings will be higher (113, 114).
Although Dr. Young's book does not explain the chemistry involved in the process, he nonetheless makes a very persuasive argument that by eating lots of green vegetables, and drinking pure water mixed with green powder (the "green drink"), diabetics can improve their BG readings. Throughout the book, there are very interesting testimonials, given by both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics; all of them reported a marked improvement in their BG readings - once they began drinking green drinks, stopped drinking carbonated beverages, and changing their eating habits.
The "green drink" is simply a mixture of oxygenated water (which can be produced with an ozone machine, or by adding sodium chlorite drops to pure water) and a teaspoon of green drink powder (which is nothing more than powdered, ground vegetables). I usually have two drinks a day, instead of an extra cup of coffee in the morning and a Diet Coke in the afternoon (which I have now given up).
Dr. Young also requires us to exercise. He prefers aerobic exercise to anaerobic exercise. I have no quarrel with his observations, especially since I have a better understanding of the benefits of having more oxygen pumped through my lungs. Oxidation is a good thing as far as I am concerned, because it neutralizes unwanted hydrogen ions and other viruses. As a side note, I have switched from the treadmill to an elliptical trainer, which gives me a better, complete body workout in less time.
Half of Dr. Young's book consists of recipes, which are all vegetarian in nature. We have not tried any of them, for a number of reasons. First, Dr. Young assumes that food budgets are unlimited, even for those of us who do not live in California. Thus, we cannot eat avocados three or four times a day. Second, the ingredients used in the recipes (even by California standards) are very expensive.
As I am writing this review, I can report that my pH readings do bear some correlation with my BG readings. When my pH is 6.5, my BG readings are a bit higher than when my pH is 7.0 or higher. Because of the changed variables (new exercise regimen, taking 2 green drinks a day, watching my intake of fatty foods, eating more green vegetables), I cannot isolate one component as causing the improvement in my BG readings.
It would be wonderful to learn that an adjustment to our diets could rid us of the need for insulin, metformin, Avandia, and other such drugs. None of the books I have reviewed suggest that we remain idle - all of the authors want us to exercise regularly (which may turn out to be the most important component of all - a recent report indicated that the best preventative for Alzheimer's Disease was to do 3 hours of aerobic exercise a week - oxygen is needed in your brain, you know).
Dr. Young's book is worth owning. Before you purchase this recommended book, I suggest that you consider reading other resources on ph balances.
The Revolutionart Diet Plan For type 1 and 2 Diabetics.......2006-01-29
The book, greatest purchase that you can have. It has helped out in the balance of food that can be eaten, it's simple to follow and it even stastes good. I have always had a problem with what to cook for myself, that is the toughest part about a diabetic. With this book you are watching the sugar intake, the acid intake and more. I do wish there were more recipes to choose from that are just as good as these. I want to thank Dr. Young and his wife for doing all the research and providing everyone with facts. I have been a diabetic for 22 years and the change in my food without the acid is unreal to believe. This was a blessing for me. Thank you so much.

EXCELLENT PLAN.......2005-06-08
I LOVE this plan. Its an excellent idea and I felt 1000% better after the first three days and then tried to eat something that was not on the plan and was flooded with a headache, and body pains like crazy.
I gave the book 4 stars because I would like a "Menu" plan . . . suggestions to eat this for breakfast, this for a snack and this for lunch etc. He gives really great information, just not how to combine foods so you don't feel hungry. The recipes in the back are excellent, but I wish they were better "catagorized", such as this is what you eat for balancing PH, this is what you eat when you are done balancing your PH etc. I would see a recipe that I would like to try and only read from their "reward" that it was a transitional recipe.
I have recommened this book to several of my diabetic friends. I have had EXCELLENT sugar levels using the diet and my asthma has improved dramatically!

The pH Miralce For Diabetes.......2005-03-15
Dr. Young 's research provides a clear path out of the challenges of blood sugar. One of my colleagues used this approach with a man who had lost most of his eyesight from diabetic retinopathy 1 year previously after having gone through laser surgery. After 2 weeks 85% of his vision came back in one eye and he was able to ragain his drivers license. Another friends father is now off of all of his medications and his blood sugar is fine. For those who choose to take the responsibility of their health in their own hands, this book is a beacon of hope.
Book Description
This comprehensive resource brings together cutting edge information about fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base physiology and fluid therapy as they apply to small animal practice. It also offers complete coverage of relevant physiology and pathophysiology, as well as important information for interpreting and analyzing biochemical test results.
Book Description
Not science fiction, but a scientific fact! This book is the first common sense scientific explanation of the aging process and "how to" reverse it. The nutrients that we deliver to our cells burn with oxygen and become acidic wastes after giving energy to our body. The body tries its best to get rid of these acidic wastes through urine and perspiration. Unfortunately, our lifestyle, diet and environment prevent our body to get rid of all the wastes that it generates. Gradually, these leftover acidic wastes accumulate somewhere within our body. Since acid coagulates blood, the blood circulation near the waste areas becomes poor, causing all kinds of degenerative diseases to develop. The author defines the aging process as the accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes within the body. According to this theory, the reduction of accumulated wastes is re verse aging. This book explains how some of the adult degenerative diseases are caused by too much acidic wastes, and describes the various scientific devices and methods to reduce these wastes without any harmful side effects. These devices and methods are being wid ely used in Japan. Alkaline water makers (water ionizers) have been in existence in Japan for more than 40 years. Many in the alternative health industry of water ionizers, magnet and far-infrared devices regard this book as the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference book of its kind in the English language. It is a "must read" for all who are health-conscious.

Reverse Aging - .......2007-09-02
Great book that was very informative in a lay person's language. Helps to explain the importance of getting my body to an alkaline state and how to remove the toxins and acidic waste from my body. Means the difference in having disease and being disease free and healthy. Wish I knew about this many years ago. It would have explained so much about different problems I was having with my health. Now I am knowledegable and working to remove the acidic weaste to restore my energy, health and vitality.
Thanks.

Tough language but few verifiable facts.......2006-02-19
In a world desperate for health solutions, the uneducated masses flock to purported cures and aids that have not met the tests of either scientific or medical validity. Alkaline water is one of those potholes that the unsuspecting customer encounters.
Careful research of this book and related topics finds that the real reason alkaline water is popular is that in pregnant Oriental women, it is believed that the use of alkaline water increases the probablility of a boy rather than a girl being born. Hence the seven(7) percent utilization of this water in that part of the world.
Elsewhere, mycocardia problems with controlled animal tests using alkaline water have been known since 1996 but are suspiciously avoided by the Japanese organizations which promote alkaline water.
Common sense nutrition tells us that if one is concerned about acidic food intake, then the use of alkaline foods with alkaline fibre and neutral pH liquid is the answer.
Alkaline promoters would have you dilute your sensitive blood pH with high alkalinity thus inducing hematological problems which may put you in the emergency room as my medic(1985 Nobel Prize recipient) clearly points out.
You might as well drink battery acid he said, the result will be the same stress on your blood pH. Here is a medic who is not an expert in water but in internal medicine cautioning against forced dilution of blood pH.
He continued by saying that when that much alkalinity is added to the digestive system, the very low pH which naturally occurs in the disgestive tract is neutralized and food is not metabolized properly. The various amino acids which are essential in the metabolic process are no longer effective and food putrifies and nutrition suffers.
The alkaline promoters, including this book's author have been sniffing glue in a closed closet and are simply out of touch with even the very basics of body chemistry and metabolic processes.
Read the book for entertainment and not for education and utility in your daily nutritional program.
