Book Description
Passive solar design techniques are becoming increasingly important in building design. This design reference book takes the building engineer or physicist step-by-step through the thermal analysis and design of passive solar buildings. In particular it emphasizes two important topics: the maximum utilization of available solar energy and thermal storage, and the sizing of an appropriate auxiliary heating/cooling system in conjunction with good thermal control.
Topics include:
* transient heat transfer and thermal storage
* fenestration components, systems and daylighting
* dynamic models of heat transfer in solar buildings
* the passive response of solar buildings and its use in design
* ventilation and indoor air quality
* analysis and sizing of small auxiliary heating/cooling systems
* control of passive solar buildings
* solar energy utilization techniques and systems
"Thermal Analysis and Design of Passive Solar Buildings" is an important contribution towards the optimization of buildings as systems that act as natural filters between the indoor and outdoor environments, while maximizing the utilization of solar energy. As such it will be an essential source of information to engineers, architects, HVAC engineers and building physicists.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introductory CFD Text.......2007-02-12
This book is a wonderful way to understand the fundamental concepts behind techniques such as the SIMPLE algorithm. Patankar begins in one dimension, expands his approach, and presents the results very clearly. His physical insights are very well presented, and his narrative style is easy to read. One may much more profitably read the recent literature in this area after having examined Patankar's text.
best fundamental CFD book, must have.......2006-03-05
This is the best CFD book I ever read !! And it should be your first CFD book too. It's easy, short, concise and correct.
It doesn't have extensive coverage or any advanced topic like most of recent CFD book get. But the way it shines is that the author (one of the founders of recent CFD field) spent that much time discussing how to discritizing and evaluating the simplest form of commonly used pde eqations and boundary conditions. No advanced math involved, it's all simple algebra.
Everytime when I start a new problem and write down the discritized eqation, I double checked it using what I learned from the book before I input it into the computer. It just worked.
There's no magic in CFD, but this book is like a magic to me.
If you want to code heat/mass transfer/fluid flow, buy this.......2002-12-17
This is extraordinarily well-written for anyone who knows a little bit about heat transfer, mass transfer, or fluid flow and wants to write a mathematical model to perform calculations in 1D, 2D or 3D. (Also works for electromagnetic equations of the same form--used it for my doctoral thesis.) It's very practically oriented, with clear explanations and good diagrams showing how the grid layout translates into code.
A fundamental book on CFD.......2000-04-26
This is one of the ground breaking texts. I purchased a copy on the recommendation of a collegue (who has worked in the field for a while) when I started in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
I found the book a little bit difficult to get into. Having spent more time working through CFD problems, it all now makes sense - although I would recommend beginners to find something else more recent (such as An introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The finite volume method by Versteeg & Malalasekera) that has some of the more recent developments in the field.
It is still an invaluable reference to have on your bookshelf as it covers the fundamentals of CFD.
excellent.......2000-03-11
A very good book to start learnig about CFD and an excellent book to everyone that works with CFD.

Book Description
In recent years, heat-sensitive electronic systems have been miniaturized far more than their heat-producing power supplies, leading to major design and reliability challenges — and making thermal management a critical design factor. This timely handbook covers all the practical issues that any packaging engineer must consider with regard to the thermal management of printed circuit boards, hybrid circuits, and multichip modules. Readers will also benefit from the extensive data on material properties and circuit functions, thus enabling more intelligent decisions at the design stage — and preventing thermal-related problems from occurring in the first place.

Excellent casual referance.......2001-06-01
This book has achieved just the right balance between throughness and overview so that I have been able to refer to it in a casual manner (once every 3-6 months) and been able to use the results without taking a new college course. I am a practicing Analog electronics engineer and thermal engineering is something I only do once (perhaps more ?) during a design/project.

Book Description
Although dynamical mechanical analysis or spectroscopy has left the domain of the rheologist and has become a prevalent tool in the analytical laboratory, it is still common to hear, "What is DMA, and what will it tell me?" or "I think I could use a DMA, but I cannot justify its cost." Previously, the novice in the field had to sort through texts on thermal analysis, rheology, and materials science just to find basic information - until now. This book provides the chemist, chemical engineer, or materials scientist with a starting point to understand the applications of dynamic mechanical analysis, its workings, and its advantages and limitations. Discussions include: · rheological concepts · stress-strain · data handling · experimental techniques and considerations · test methods, such as frequency sweeps and time-temperature curves · data analysis
Customer Reviews:
It may help yr experiment.......2006-07-03
The clear text will guide my experiment in composites.
The DMA technique may be helpful on several materials dynamic-mechanical characterization and this book introduces the why and how to.
Good investment to my thesis!
What I needed, when I needed it.......2001-09-27
I needed to get up to speed on DMA fast and I got what I needed. It didn't provide all the info I required for my specific application (submicron thin films) but it did provide a sound foundation for further investigation. This is truly what it claims to be, a practical introduction, many thanks to the author.
Finally! The Book That Spells Out The Answers To Questions........2000-02-09
I spent many hours researching for a Thermal Mechanical textbook that was packed full of "Get Down To The Point Answers". Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The books I've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. This book was VERY informative, and it answered my questions. Special Thanks to the author. Please write many more books with the same intentions in mind: "We would like to understand and learn from what we read"! Thank You!

I ordered this book based on the other review here onamazon.com and was looking for a bit more. A fair bit of the contentis already covered by free application notes on the web and sales literature that the makers of DMA instrumentation pass out for free. If your looking for a solid treatment of the polymer physics of DMA testing, that's not this book; maybe it hasn't been written yet. If you just want to relate DMA testing to real world environments and effects, then there aren't enough good examples in the book or a method to make this book worth the price.
This would make an acceptable guide for a technician who was just introduced to a DMA - I was looking for more.

Book Description
In this updated and fully revised second edition, the authors provide the newcomer and the experienced practitioner with a balanced and comprehensive insight into all important methods and aspects of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), including a sound presentation of the theoretical basis of DSC thermal analysis and temperature-modulated DSC (TMDCS). Emphasis is placed on modern evaluation techniques, instrumentation, the underlying measurement principles, metrologically correct calibrations, factors influencing the measurement process, and on the exact interpretation of the results. The information enables the research scientist, the analyst and experienced laboratory staff to choose the most suitable equipment, to apply DSC methods successfully, to interpret the measurement curve, and thus to measure key properties precisely. In addition, the new edition includes improved instrumental techniques such as Tzerotm and StepScantm, new evaluation techniques, more applications, and the latest references.
Customer Reviews:
A practical guide to DSC.......2001-08-30
This book is a useful and clearly written practical guide for a technique that is becoming more important for more people as the years go by. If I do have to get critical, I could say that its price is rather high for its size. Although it contains a few references to modulated DSC I would gladly see a second edition that incorporates that side of the story in detail precisely because this new development is revolutionizing the DSC field as we speak. It will make it even broader than it already is and the new users need a book that allows them a good and easy path in. Another thing that is missing is the subfield of microcalorimetry (on protein solutions etc).
The explanation of deconvolution techniques is rather meager because the authors find fourier transforms (too?!) daunting. Otherwise: a fine book
A good reference book for both beginners and experts.......2000-01-17
This book gave me in depth understanding of each standard test method. It explains the test procedures, the sources of error and how to correct for them. Better written than most ASTM standards but still have room for improvement. It's not a "DSC for Dummies". I still have problem understanding certain parts of this book. Background knowledge of DSC is a needed. If your only source of test procedure is ASTM standards (and you are like me - have problem understanding them), this book will definately help.

Book Description
How to predict thermoplastics behavior in high-performance structural applications Here's the very first engineering resource with all the data and design/analysis techniques you need to work with even the newest thermoplastics. Structural Analysis of Thermoplastic Components by Gerry Trantina and Ron Nimmer shows you how to predict stiffness, creep and fatigue of polymeric components--PLUS non-homogeneous materials such as structural foams and composites. You'll benefit from detailed comparisons of analytic prediction versus measured behavior and much more: Nonstandard property measurement and analysis; Nonlinearities associated with large deformations; Using structural geometry to offset low material stiffness; Designing thermoplastics to withstand impacts; Important loading variables, component lifetimes, frequency effects, hysteric heating and cyclic crack growth.

Book Description
As a result of the Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) initiative launched by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), analytical development is receiving more attention within the pharmaceutical industry. Illustrating the importance of analytical methodologies, Thermal Analysis of Pharmaceuticals presents reliable and versatile characterization tools for the successful development of pharmaceutical products. It draws attention to the most widely applicable methods and demonstrates how to interpret the associated data. The book opens with the first three chapters devoted to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the most commonly used thermal method. These chapters cover the principles, optimal use, and pharmaceutical applications of the method. Subsequent chapters explore modulated temperature DSC, thermogravimetric analysis, thermal microscopy, microcalorimetry, high sensitivity DSC, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermally stimulated current, all of which have attracted great interest within the pharmaceutical field. The chapters include theoretical background, measurement optimization, and pharmaceutical applications of each technique. Exploring important techniques for characterizing the physical structure and properties of pharmaceutical materials, Thermal Analysis of Pharmaceuticals achieves an ideal balance in the depth, relevance, and accessibility of topics presented. The book provides an excellent overview of this key area in pharmaceutical development.
