Customer Reviews:
Vogel is the man.......2006-11-11
The new Vogel is not as detailed in basic techniques but does manage to cover basic processes in a way seldom seen in modern organic lab guides. I should be on the shelf of every serious organic and biochemist along with the Fieser & Fieser series "Reagents for Organic Chemistry".
The ultimate textbook on practical organic synthesis.......2004-07-27
It has the most trustworthy procedures for the synthesis of organic compounds with the underlying philosophy behind the reactions complete with the mechanism. Even briefly described procedures are easy to follow. An example in point is the Swern's oxidation. It also includes characterization of compounds using both chemical and spectroscopic methods thus covering the whole spectrum of practical organic chemistry. Almost all the other information to be required by an organic synthetic chemist in the laboratory is also included. I do not know of any other single book that can rival the Vogel. I, however, would very much like to see a moderately priced new edition.
good text, forbidding price.......2002-10-08
The book is very good for reference, yet it is too expensive for graduate students. I would also suggest taking $$$off, relative to March's and C&S's good text, this one is really forbidding.
The Bible for Organic Laboratory.......2000-09-13
I took an undergraduate course on advanced organic laboratory method and Vogel was meant to be an incredible reference and life-saver. The overwhelming size of the book might seem somewhat frightening yet the useful information is worth the size and money.
Pavia's "Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques" might seem to be a water-down version of Vogel. Vogel is extremely well-written and detailed in laboratory tecniques such as chromatography, distillation, HPLC, crystallization, extraction, etc. A chapter is also devoted to discussion of solvents and reagents, which helps tremendously for separation experiments.
Vogel also discusses aliphatic, heterocyclic, and aromatic compounds and introduces spectroscopic methods. Vogel is recommended for advanced lab course that requires frequent modification of lab procedures and reference for chemists.
Time for a new edition.......2000-09-05
This book is really good but it's time for a new edition ! Compared to another excellent book (Jerry March) it is also too expensive. I would give 5 stars to a new and cheaper edition.

Book Description
Sol-Gel Science presents the physical and chemical principles of the sol-gel process at a level suitable for graduate students and practitioners in the field. This book defines sol-gel rather broadly as the preparation of ceramic materials by preparation of a sol, gelation of the sol, and removal of the solvent. The sol may be produced from inorganic or organic precursors (e.g., nitrates or alkoxides) and may consist of dense oxide particles of polymeric clusters. Brinker expands the definition of ceramics to include organically modified materials, often called ORMOSILs or CERAMERs. The emphasis of the author' treatment is on the science, rather than the technology, of sol-gel processing. Although a chapter on applications is included, more detailed discussion is available in proceedings of conferences and in the recent collection of articles, Sol-Gel Technology for thin films, Fibers, Preforms, Electronics, and Specialty Shapes (Noyes, Park Ridge, N.J., 1988), edited by professor Lisa Klein.
Customer Reviews:
A Compendium of Knowledge about Sol Gel Science.......2000-10-11
Perhaps it's trite to say this, but Brinker and Scherer's _Sol Gel Science_ is *the* indispensible desktop reference for the sol-gel chemist. Though now over a decade old, the topics covered (only a smattering of which are mentioned in the editorial review above) are so fundamental that it remains one of the most often cited sol-gel references, both in texts and refereed journal articles. The layout of the book takes the reader through the entire sol-gel formation process, from reaction to casting to drying, curing and other post-modificiations, with a chapter devoted to each step - permitting this book either to be read cover-to-cover (for the interested newcomer or as a text for a course in sol-gel science) or to be referenced as necessary by the more familiar reader.
C. Jeffrey Brinker, now affiliated with Sandia National Laboratories as well as the University of New Mexico, remains the preeminent researcher and one of the most-often cited authors in his field, continuing research on self-assembled nanostructures, porosity-tailored materials, organic-inorganic hybrids, and related topics.
George W. Scherer, professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Princeton University, also maintains a professional involvement in sol-derived gels, glasses, and ceramics, among other areas of interest, and is the author of several patents, as well as innumerable scientific papers, in these fields.
Though more-recent texts may be more up-to-date in terms of research cited, especially areas pertinent to nanotechnology, this book's position as a compendium of knowledge in the field of sol-gel science has not diminished with age and is highly reccomended.

Book Description
Written by well-established professors in the field, Polymer Chemistry, Second Edition provides a well-rounded and articulate examination of polymer properties at the molecular level. It focuses on fundamental principles based on underlying chemical structures, polymer synthesis, characterization, and properties. Consistent with the previous edition, the authors emphasize the logical progression of concepts, rather than presenting just a catalog of facts. The book covers topics that appear prominently in current polymer science journals. It also provides mathematical tools as needed, and fully derived problems for advanced calculations. This new edition integrates new theories and experiments made possible by advances in instrumentation. It adds new chapters on controlled polymerization and chain conformations while expanding and updating material on topics such as catalysis and synthesis, viscoelasticity, rubber elasticity, glass transition, crystallization, solution properties, thermodynamics, and light scattering. Polymer Chemistry, Second Edition offers a logical presentation of topics that can be scaled to meet the needs of introductory as well as more advanced courses in chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering.
Customer Reviews:
a good book for physical polymer science.......2005-10-10
As I have said in my title, this is an excellent book for introductory physical polymer science. Not that good for organic/synthetic polymer science.
Too wordy.......2002-05-13
This book of Paul Hiemenz' could have been almost halved without detriment to its content. I would not point this out if the language were engaging, but it is not.
Review of Hiemenz "Polymer Chemistry".......2001-07-25
Classic text on polymer chemistry. Professors usually teach directly out of this book, and are excited to discover that it is back in print. Though "Polymer Chemistry" has not been updated since 1984, by no means is it outdated. Intended for senior-level undergraduate or beginning graduate level, this text covers introductory terminology, basic chain dynamics, basic rheological characterization, crystallization, thermodynamics of the glassy state, synthesis, reaction kinetics, and solution thermodynamics.
This book is written from the chemist's perspective and meant as an introduction. Chemists wishing to specialize in the organic synthesis aspect may also benefit from "Principles of Polymerization" by Odian. Materials engineers would likewise turn to a polymer physics text and keep Hiemenz as a reference.
While this book is indispensible as a student text, its format isn't conducive to leisurely reading. A professional wishing to brush-up on skills may benefit from other texts.

Customer Reviews:
Good book with few flaws.......2007-01-09
The book is great for understanding the title subject. But it has too many references which distracts the reader. Also, many times, the corresponding picture of a particular topic covered is not in the same page as the topic. This requires going back and forth between pages. The problems at the end of each chapter are really good and checks the understanding of the subject thoroughly.
Outstanding..........2005-05-06
This is probably the best book of its kind in the vast and multidisciplinary field of drug design and action. Richard Silverman is an acclaimed chemistry Professor at Northwestern University, and in this book, he provides the most comprehensive and lucid exposition of the chemical basis of drug action that I have seen. No matter how complicated biological systems and their interactions are, at the basic level, it's all chemistry, and mostly organic chemistry. An organic chemist will find this book extremely illuminating in a way that would not have been made clear through his traditional education.
The book opens with a short but clear discussion of drug discovery, combinatorial chemistry, and clinical testing and trials. Then it leads the reader through a variety of enzyme catalyzed reactions, with examples of major drugs studded all the way. Silverman shows us how nature is the master organic chemist, employing the familiar reactions of chemistry in an unsurpassed way. The chapter on enzyme inhibition is long and detailed, and it's breathtaking. Which is important because almost all major drugs act by inhibiting enzymes. The examples which Silverman chooses to illustrate are both important (including many bestselling anti-cancer, anti-viral, and antibiotic drugs to name a few), as well as very interesting. The last parts of the book deal with DNA binding drugs, and with pathways of drug metabolism and excretion. Along all the way, the emphasis is on the chemical reactions that drugs undergo, which after all is what controls their properties. The lucidity of the book is such that a beginning graduate well-versed with the basic principles of general and organic chemistry can easily understand all the contents.
This book is so interesting and illuminating that it's one of the very few academic books which I have actually read from the first to the last page, with every word in between. In fact, it even makes great bedside reading! Truly a must-have book for all chemists and biologists of every kind, interested in how drugs work.
Excellent.......2004-04-05
This is an excellent book and it lies on the smaller physical side of organic chemistry, as the title says, instead of the huge biochemical side. It really was a fascinating book.
Check out the new edition of this book.......2004-02-04
There is a new considerably expanded and updated edition available of Silverman's already classic text as of Jan/04. ISBN is 0-12-643732-7. Check it out... price is comparable to the earlier edition.
Compulsory book for every biochemistry student.......2001-04-20
This book is very good introduction in the major aspects of the chemistry of the drugs. It explains with good schemes the reactions of drugs and others important mechanisms. The book is scientifically well written and enjouyable to read. The graphic images of molecules integrate well with the written aspects of book. Book covers major areas of pharmaceutical drug research, integrates the chemical and pharmacological aspects of drugs, and discusses the essentials of drug activity and mechanisms.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2004-11-25
I liked the book overall but have to comment on what is in my opinion, a poor choice of nomenclature. In Chapter 7, the authors use the term "functional block diagram" to denote what most engineers would term an "operational flow diagram". I found it irritating to the point of distraction. Unfortunately, there seems to be a penchant among reliability and quality assurance professionals to coin and use acronyms, often at the expense of common understanding. If you can get over that, the ideas the authors are trying to communicate are worthwhile.
Reliability for Improvement.......2003-12-31
This new book is a refreshing reliability approach to improving the reliability of products. It doesn't follow the ususal statistical approaches to describing reliability after the fact. It is not filled with equations for calculation. Rather, the authors suggest ways for companies to change how they develop products and for people to become actively involved in this process. A wide variety of topics are covered, from establishing a MRB to setting up a HALT lab to staffing. All of these provide great help for those who wish to learn from the lessons of others. This is a people oriented book aimed at helping engineers overcome the common company hurdles to improvement. It6 should be on the book shelf of every reliability engineer.
Super Practical.......2003-12-08
This is not a book on Reliability Theory; there are no math equations or statistics -- but it refers you to the very best references and consultants for that. This is a book about making an impact on your company by improving the reliability of its products. It covers the product Life Cycle from concept to obsolescence with what to at every step. It touches every subject important to starting and sustaining a revolution on product reliability right down to the practical details like what kind of people to hire, what equipment to buy, how to budget for and ensure success installing and running a reliability lab, etc., etc. Written at a level so anyone can understand it -- within any size company -- written in a conversational tone like a fireside chat. A great reference for anyone involved in any aspect of improving product reliability.
You canýt go wrong with this one!.......2003-12-03
This is an excellent book for reliability engineers and managers alike. The authors have done a great job of explaining how to implement a successful reliability program. The book teaches everything from how to avoid common obstacles encountered when developing a reliability program to what are the best and most effective reliability tools to use. You will find everything from basic to detailed reliability concepts (read the table of contents; it's very comprehensive). This is the type of book that you'll read once and continue to use as a reference for years to come.

A troubling answer to the most critical question facing today's world energy market-can Saudi Arabia meet the rising world demand for oil in the years ahead Sparked by personal observations of Saudi oil wells-which led him to suspect that some Saudi fields were in decline-energy industry insider Matt Simmons has created a compelling case that Saudi Arabia's production will soon reach an apex, after which the world will be confronted with an immense and potentially catastrophic oil shortage. Written in a clear and engaging style, Twilight in the Desert provides an in-depth look at the world oil market and the mismanagement of Saudi oil resources. This factually based book is backed by over 200 technical papers-all published over the last 20 years-that individually detail problems with particular Saudi oil wells and fields, and collectively demonstrate how the entire Saudi system could stall under the pressure of higher world oil demand. Based on his analysis, Mr. Simmons asserts that sudden and sharp oil production declines could happen at any time. Twilight in the Desert shows that even under the most optimistic scenario, Saudi Arabia may be able to maintain current rates of production for several years, but will not be able to increase production enough to meet the expected increase in global demand. Eventually, the reckoning day will come, and the world economy will be confronted with a major shock that will stunt economic growth, increase inflation, and further destabilize the Middle East. Matthew R. Simmons (Houston, TX) is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Simmons & Company International, a Houston-based investment bank that specializes in the energy industry. He currently serves on the boards of The Atlantic Council of the United States and Brown Forman Corporation, and is a member of the National Petroleum Council and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Good but complicated.......2007-03-09
I am using this book as part of my graduate class. Before I got this book, I was using the old edition, believe me the old edition is much simpler, easier to understand than this new one. They have integrated the book with overwhelming symbols for which they do not even have the key/index. You spend a lot of time figuring out what the symbols mean. So, I would recommend that you try to get a hold of the old edition of the book, however remember that the old edition does not cover the modelling part and does not give you exposure to the problem sets.
So, the bottom line is that if you want to get an understanding and feel of the subject goahead for the old edition, but if this is your core area of research and do not mind a bit of complication in the writing and explanation, go for the new edition.
