5 out of 5 stars Worthy Successor.......2000-06-29

A long-awaited but worthy successor to the book considered by many to be the bible of porous materials characterization: "Gregg & Sing" (2nd Edition, 1982). This collaboration between the Rouquerols and Ken Sing has created a detailed handbook covering not only important theoretical aspects, but copious experimental and application information too. Adsorption calorimetry gets more attention than before (not surprising given the Rouquerols' affiliation), as do "new" materials such as MCM's and "new" calculation models like DFT (Density Functional Theory) and Monte Carlo simulation. Importantly, there is a great deal of coverage given to adsorptives other than nitrogen (the most common but not necessarily the most appropriate in all cases). Hundreds of references are given for follow-up reading in areas of special interest. Anyone seeking a reliable, broad, yet highly informative coverage of adsorption methodology for porous materials characterization should invest in this title.

    Book Description

This book gives a unique overview of principles associated with the characterization of solids with regard to their surface area, pore size and density. The book covers methods based on Gas Adsorption (Physi- and Chemisorption), Mercury Porosimetry and Pycnometry. Not only are the theoretical and experimental basics of these techniques described, but also the most recent developments, particularly in light of the tremendous progress made in recent years in Materials Science and Nanotechnology. The application of classical theories and methods for pore size analysis are discussed in contrast with the most advanced microscopic theories based on statistical mechanics (e.g. Density Functional Theory and Molecular Simulation). The book will appeal both to students and to scientists in industry who are in need of accurate and comprehensive pore and surface area characterization of their materials.

In addition to silicate, this book provides useful information about clay minerals, metal oxides, dyes, and zeolites. That is, this book extends from SiO2-focused to silicate-related subjects. The book can serve as a good supplementary reference to Ralph Iler's "Chemistry of Silicate".

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN about Rocket motors!.......2007-06-28

I have read this book, and the reread it, it is very informative, and educational as well, it tells you the do's and don't of motor building , how to make, and get, and improvise, your own motors. Step by step instructions and I only wish there were more books written about technical "Hobbies" like this one, since most Americans shy away for fear of local state and federal laws, when in fact you can make excellent Model Rocket Motors with sugar and a simple safe easily obtainable nitrate! Not a thing more to make it "blast off"

Even if you don't make the motors, its a FUN read and very educational for the novice chemistry and physic students.

    I loved it!

    I recommend it....

    5 out of 5 stars A must have........2004-07-14

This is one of the most complete books written on the subject of rocket motor construction. It is easy to read and follow.
Everyone from the beginner to the experienced Model Rocket Motor enthusiast will find this book indispensable. Mr. Sleeter will guide you through every step required to get you off the ground.
This is a must have for any library.
    Thanks David great work.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers What It Advertizes.......2004-06-22

Excellent, nicely done book which carefully balances the politics, the theory and the practical considerations of making your own rocket motors, from the simple but perishable Sugar based motors to huge high performnce black powder motors. Also includes the ORIGINAL 1983 formulas and methods for those who are currently forking out $135 a shot for THAT collectible volume. I think almost all will agree the revised approach and formulas look more relable and safe. Though they dry faster now, there is some time consuming, but necessary testing employed that assures a consistent product. It CLEARLY shows that the provable safety record in amateur rocket engine assembly AND amateur rocketry at all power levels is far better that has been admitted elesewhere, and the book explains why that is so. This is a safety record not approached by other products like gasoline, lawn mowers, lawn darts & air powered firearms.
For those wondering, the skills and hazards involved are not too different from those encountered by an amateur drag racer in his shop, or an amateur steam engine constructor. Access to a machine shop is helpful, but avoidable. Even if you never plan to actually build a motor, this book is still quite interesting and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to solid propellant motors.......2004-06-20

"Amateur Rocket Motor Construction" by David Sleeter (Teleflite Corporation) is an extremely-detailed description of the construction of blackpowder-type rocket motors, from C8 (3/4" diameter, 3 1/4" long) to I65 (2" diameter, 14" long).

It's a big book, 500+ pages, beautiful photos, extremely clean and clear drawings (and lots of them). Information on almost every aspect of motor construction including: photos of ingredients (some neat photomicrographs); making tooling without a lathe; machining instructions for those who do have a lathe; where to get and how to extract potassium nitrate; types of paper that can be used for casings and what *not* to use; formulations that use sodium nitrate (sometimes easier to find locally than potassium nitrate); stepwise photos AND drawings of the motor-making procedure. All the tested motors given in the book are coreburners, but detailed information, propellant formula, drawings of tooling, caveats, and detailed construction procedure for endburning motors are provided for the individual who wishes to experiment in that direction.

One comment, not a criticism: For the individual who wishes to make large or numerous BP motors, I would strongly suggest Lloyd Sponenburg's book on milling for the amateur pyrotechician (Skylighter and others vend the book, it's about $20). A "sponenmill", properly constructed and loaded with sufficient milling media, will mill large amounts of propellant at a huge time savings.

"More education is almost always better than less." For the individual who is interested in stretching his/her mind, "Amateur Rocket Motor Construction" is a must-have. (I would *really* like to see one of those H137 motors taking off...)

Powders and bulk solids, handled widely in the chemical, pharmaceutical, agriculture, smelting, and other industries present unique fire, explosion, and toxicity hazards. Indeed, substances which are practically inert in consolidated form may become quite hazardous when converted to powders and granules. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board is currently investigating dust explosions that occured in 2003 at WestPharma, CTA Acoustics, and Hayes-Lemmerz, and is likely to recommend that companies that handle powders or whose operations produce dust pay more attention to understanding the hazards that may exist at their facility. This new CCPS guidelines book will discuss the types of hazards that can occur in a wide range of process equipment and with a wide range of substances, and will present measures to address these hazards.

          Book Description

Much of the current interest in shock compression of porous solids stems from the desire to bond hard, refractory powders into strong and dense solids. However, while much is known about the effects of shock compression on monolithic materials, the unusual physical and chemical processes that take place when a porous medium is shocked have been little studied thus far. This volume -- with contributions by leading researchers in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, and materials science -- begins to address that gap. The focus is on heterogeneous deformation mechanisms, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and chemical processes. The contributions discuss such topics as modeling the complex interplay of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes; experimental data on pore collapse and their interpretation; and synthesis of new materials through shock-induced chemical reactions. By presenting not only the most recent results, but also the open questions that remain, these essays convey the excitement of developing a scientific basis for understanding shock compression of highly porous solids. Topics covered include > Shock Compression Science in Highly Porous Solids > Shock Loading of Porous High Explosives > Continuum Mixture Modeling of Reactive Porous Media > Two-Phase Media Model of Shock Compression with Chemical reaction > Constitutive Modeling of Shock-Induced Reactions in Powder Mixtures > Discrete-element Modeling of Shock Processes in Powders

          Book Description

This book is an introduction to the physical principles underlying the behavior of materials consisting of grains. Such materials can be found in an enormous variety of places, ranging from the powders used to make vitamin pills to the rings of Saturn, from beaches to grain elevators, and from pottery clay to interstellar dust. Granular materials have interested physicists from Coulomb and Faraday to Reynolds and Rayleigh, but only recently have mathematical and experimental methods been developed to analyze their properties in detail. This text develops the fundamental physics of the behavior of granular materials. It covers the basic properties of flow, friction, and fluidization of uniform granular materials; discusses mixing and segregation of heterogeneous materials (the famous "brazil-nut problem"); and concludes with an introduction to numerical models. The presentation begins with simple experiments and uses their results to build concepts and theorems about materials whose behavior is often quite counter-intuitive; it aims to present in a unified way the background needed to understand current work in the field. Developed for students at the University of Paris, the text will be suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students; it should also be of interest to researchers and engineers just eentering the field.

4 out of 5 stars The granular book for physicists.......2007-10-05

This is the best book around on the general physics of granular systems. A solid addition to the shelf.

4 out of 5 stars It's Just Not About Sands of Time.......2001-07-13

It is interesting that even though the behavior of granular materials (sands, powders, grains) have been studied for more than 2000 years, only recently have technologists addressed the question of determining the fundamental characteristics of granular materials behavior. Two books on the physics of granular materials have been issued by Springer-Verlag in the last year or so. I have reviewed the Ristow book. And now I consider the Duran book.

Ristow is a leading researcher in Germany. Duran is from the French school of powder technology. The two books are at once overlapping and independent. Unlike Ristow's straightforward technical approach to the subject, Duran's approach is more tutorial. And this agrees with Duran's objective as cited in the Foreward. Both authors choose to cover the same ground, and both approach the two major areas, granular behavior of piles and granular behavior in rotating systems, in essentially the same way. I find Duran's approach frustrating, however. I want him to simply "cut to the chase," to "get on with the story." Having said this, I think that Duran provides an easier-to-understand arithmetic approach to granular materials behavior. Surprisingly, this is satisfying ONLY when one rereads the material! Both Ristow and Duran give extensive references. The Duran translation is excellent and the writing and equation explanation is clean. I guess my only fault with Duran is that he does not give as thorough an approach to modeling as Ristow. My library contains both Ristow and Duran.

            Book Description

New analytical methods have provided further insight into the structure, surface characteristics, and chemistries of increasingly small particles. However, current literature offers information on only a limited number of powders being investigated. Written by renowned scientists in the field, Powders and Fibers: Interfacial Science and Applications examines the most appropriate characterization methods for analyzing powders and fibers. Using these techniques, the authors explore the formation and roles of various multiphase interfaces. Book Description

The art of solving a structure from powder diffraction data has developed rapidly over the last ten years to the point where numerous crystal structures, both organic and inorganic, have been solved directly from powder data. However, it is still an art and, in contrast to its single crystal equivalent, is far from routine. The art lies not only in the correct application of a specific experimental technique or computer program, but also in the selection of the optimal path for the problem at hand. Written and edited by experts active in the field, and covering both the fundamental and applied aspects of structure solution from powder diffraction data, this book guides both novices and experienced practitioners alike through the maze of possibilities.

Powder diffraction has been around for decades, as a means of determining (or attempting to determine) crystal structure. However, David shows the many advances in recent years, driven principally by ever more powerful computers.

He describes that going from powder data to a crystal structure is often an underdetermined problem, compared to dealing with single crystal samples. Thus many methods have arisen, that basically take intelligent steps or assumptions, to reduce down the manifold possibilities.

He makes a cogent point that all is not yet automated. There is often still a need for you to make an inspired guess, based on your own expert knowledge, while applying the computational tools that have been developed.

The book is well suited for crystallographers, as a good summary of the start of the art.
