In December of 2004, after more than a year of investigation, San Francisco Chronicle reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams broke the story that in a federal investigation of a nutritional supplement company called BALCO, Barry Bonds and fellow slugger Jason Giambi had admitted to taking steroids. Immediately the issue of steroids in baseball became front-page news. In Game of Shadows, Fainaru-Wada and Williams expose the secrets of BALCO, illuminating how professional athletes risked their health for a competitive edge.

Great Book.......2006-08-03
The Steroid Bible had all the information I was looking for and is the best steroid book that I have found. Dosages, stacks, cycles, and avoiding side effects are covered in great detail.
Impotent, disorganized and incomplete disinformation..........2006-07-26
I can't even call this thing as a book. It's a disaster.Dont throw your money away.It is disorganized and leads you to nothing.
Doesn't get any Better.......2006-07-18
It doesn't get better than The Steroid Bible. The best part of the book are the extensive steroid experiences reported by the real life steroid users who share every detail of what it was like to obtain and use steroids. Top that off with extensive medical research and tips on avoiding steroid side effects and you know why it is called The Steroid Bible.
Good for a laugh!!!!.......2006-07-09
I bought this book because a few of the reviews said this was an extremely informative book on anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS), well it's not. The book mentioned a few of the more popular AAS on the market today and the "proper" dose, cycling, etc. none of which is even remotely accurate. The author of the book has no medical background and apparently has no access to the internet to get the correct information on AAS. I have studied AAS for years and have yet to read any peer reviewed paper that backs the ridiculous claims put forth in this book. There are a ton of great books and articles out there for AAS and most are written by qualified individuals, this however is not one of them. The author is a fool and it is a shame and scary that something like this can be published. You must be a complete and total moron to think there is any truthful information in this book.
If you do buy this book or have bought this book, be sure to pick up a few more AAS books written by a qualified physician or research scientist.
Great Informative Book.......2006-05-24
The Steroid Bible is a great book. It provided all the information I was looking for about steroids, hgh, and other muscle builders. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!.......2006-10-18
I don't know why this book is getting such good reviews. Perhaps these other customers are meat heads? I don't know what book THEY read, but this book is simply NOT GOOD!
This book was backed by a steroid website, and as such, the information is of VERY POOR QUALITY! This book is a cheap money-making scheme. THERE ARE WEB SITE ADVERTISEMENTS IN THIS BOOK! They actually have the nerve to refer to the book readers as their web site members! Every chapter has a footer that is a blatant advertisement for their website! There is actually an entire chapter on beating steroid tests, which is NOTHING MORE THAN AN ADVERTISEMENT for one single product. The product web site is then listed throughout the entire book, in addition to the steroid web site I already mentioned. I honestly feel tricked.
This book follows the trend of the steroid industry. Meaning, IT IS BIASED INFORMATION that is 25% useful and 75% bull. It's like reading a forum member's excited review of a product and then finding out that he works for the company that makes that product. I cannot responsibly accept the information in this book as completely factual.
Summary:
This book is unprofessional. It hasn't been edited or proofread. There are countless spelling, grammar, and sentence structure errors. The information contradicts itself and seems to be taken directly from internet forums. The author is merely a self-proclaimed authority on the topic, when in reality, he's just another careless abuser with little-to-no respect or regard for safety. He brags about volunteering his body to test experimental underground laboratory steroids, as if he is some kind of fearless pioneer in the world of steroids. There is virtually NO focus on PCT (post-cycle treatment), and the "stacks" he proposes are mostly useless. The first "cycle" he recommends is 500mg of test for 12 weeks. That's it? That's why I bought this "ultimate research guide?" You can find sample stacks/cycles online... better ones. This whole book reminds me of my high school research papers: no substance, no new information, mostly filler, and ultimately I just don't care who reads it as long as I get credit for it. You can learn just as much by eaves-dropping in a locker room. THIS IS NOT INTELLIGENT INFORMATION! I bought this book to fill in the details of my personal steroid research... it failed to do so.
Content Quality:
This book is VERY POORLY written. The entire book is riddled with spelling errors, grammatical errors, and nonsensical sentences. Paragraphs don't flow together and if I didn't know any better, I'd say 90% of this book is cut-and-pasted from steroid forums. You may not think these details are important, but this book is so bad, the information integrity is actually compromised. Here's an example:
"Product X has very high anabolic properties, with mild anabolic properties."
Now, clearly one of those "anabolic" should have been "androgenic," but which one?
Completeness:
On the back of this book, there is a bulleted list of topics that suggest the extend of the information inside. IT IS NOT ACCURATE! Despite the entries "Buying Steroids" and "Injection Techniques," the available information is limited to about 1 page for each. Meanwhile, the Profiles sections take up over 95% of the pages.
Basically, the ONLY useful information in this book is the profiles. I will say that the list of steroids is quite extensive. Although, I'm not sure how useful this really is. I guess if you stumbled upon some rare, exotic steroid and wanted to know about it, this book would be a good place to start. Each profile is about half a page of scientific stats (molecular weight, anabolic:androgenic ratios, recommended dose, etc.) followed by VERY INFORMAL descriptions of the specified steroid. The information is "forum-quality." By that I mean it isn't based on any science, but rather the general opinion of the bodybuilding community. You mean the same community that is rating this TERRIBLE BOOK with 5 stars?
There is no reason for this book to be so expensive, and there is no reason why it's being rated so well. If you are new to steroid research, perhaps the apparent comprehensiveness is impressive. If you are looking for quality information... DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you are looking for information on steroids with an emphasis on safety... DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. This book should be thought of only as a directory of specific steroids and their properties. If that's what you need... there is a free copy of this book on its way to my landfill.
Very educational! A good read!.......2006-07-14
This book is great, its very informative and offers a non-bias view . The book is an easy read and a must have for anyone interested in learning about AAS. few books I have found match up to it, if any.
Please research before posting comments..........2006-07-14
For those trying to claim steroids are so dangerous, where are your conclusive studies? Studies done time and time again indicate their safeness. The US is one of the very few countries where you can't buy them over the counter. The general publics view on steroids in the US is completely innacurate.
For those who believe steroids are so bad, explain why steroids are still currently used today for numerous medicinal purposes. The majority of steroids have far less side effects than most prescription medications which so many people will pop like candy. Yet when it comes to steroids, suddenly they draw the line?
Also, I don't understand where you people make your boundaries as for what's cheating and what isn't? People can take creatine or other supplements they can buy in their local GNC or Vitamin World. However, if a product works TOO well, they ban it and force it off the market. It's ridiculous that if something turns out to be very effective it's suddenly cheating. It's not cheating, it's about utilizing something that can help you push past your genetic limitations to achieve higher goals.
I will admit that without proper research and maintenance while on steroids, they can be harmful. However, steroids have NEVER nor will ever kill anyone. They can increase a persons risk of high blood pressure and cholesterol, but that can all be easily kept under control by proper diet and quarterly checkups with your doctor. There's a responsible and an irresponsible way to take them. Taken responsibly, they're nothing to be concerned about. The sodas and fast foods most of you who criticize steroids eat causes far more concerns for high cholesterol and blood pressure than any steroid ever could. So, under that premise, we should make fatty foods illegal as well.
Regardless of whether you choose to agree with the statements made in this book or not, further research into steroids, and I'm talking about actual clinical research, not media bs hype, will clearly indicate it's safeness as well as effectiveness in treating numerous conditions. Steroids helps treat people with muscle deterioration disease, they work as a hormonal replacement therapy for older adults who's testosterone levels have diminished, certain steroids treat severe cases of anemia, and the list goes on. Now, how can something so harmful be used as a medication for so many things? Fact of the matter is they're far safer than the general public would like to believe.
As far as cheating, where do you make your boundaries? I guess eating is cheating too, cause if you don't eat, you won't gain weight. Also, sleeping must be cheating too, cause without sleep, you won't properly recover from a workout. Those criticizing steroids need to simply reconsider their boundaries in my opinion. If cheating is in your terms "using what is the most effective method of achieving what you're looking to accomplish", then I say cheat on.
Safety and Education.......2006-07-13
I'm a average Joe at the age of 46, I responsibly started AAS about 2 years ago and it has dramatically changed my life for the better. I eat, sleep, look, act, perform, feel, love and I could keep going on.
The point of this book for is education and it provides that in an incredibly professional way, I would not advocate the use of AAS for everyone but they certainly have a place in society and this book investigates pretty much all aspects of AAS use.
While there is a lot of negativity surrounding the use of AAS, the fact of the matter is that they are not going away!
This book will inform the individual about AAS in general as well as educating them on the "safe" world of AAS. In my opinion this book will save a lot of people from improperly using AAS.
Excellent.......2006-07-13
this book is brilliant! the information it provides is top stuff, cant find anything else that matches it. excellent buy

STOP! Read This Book First!.......2007-07-06
I've always been interested in anabolics and never could find good, solid, unbiased information that I wanted on the subject. When I read this book it really answered a lot of my questions. It opened my eyes to the legal part of the matter and how someone can get themselves in a legal mess when you don't know the basics. This book lays it all out where steroids and the law can easily be understood and I really enjoyed it. If you are even thinking about going to a website or local dealer to get your gear, you owe it to yourself to get this book and read it first. Whats 20 or 30 bucks compared to a possible felony charge?
Get a local lawyer.......2007-04-13
Steroids are drugs like any other. If you get in trouble, you are far better off with a local lawyer. Rick has made a fortune by catering to this niche, and while this book DOES tell you all the specifics about steroid law, you can find that info for free online. It kills me when people hire this guy, fly him across the country, and expect he can do something that their local lawyer cannot. Rick doesnt even win his cases.
This book is good for basic info, but it doesnt tell you anything you cant find out on your own, for free, online.
Your Steroid Reference.......2007-04-10
If you use anabolic steroids or have been wondering about the steroid controversy, this reference guide and history of the drug will answer all your questions.
A full spectrum analysis on steroids in America!.......2007-02-09
I needed this book for a good referrence, and it has proven to be an effective tool for approaching an alternative side of the steroid controversy. Anyone who feels confused about the entire issue, should read this book - and, it's a great buy! This isn't a book that encourages people to use steroids, yet it portrays the unjust circumstances that have victimized cosmetic users of AAS. It also gives very informative medical facts, that have often been distorted by anti-steroid propaganda. The legal advice in this book is astounding, as it was written by an lawyer who specializes in its area. You won't get better unbiased history, legal information, and cited facts than from this book. It packs 3 punches in one!
You must own this book.......2004-12-09
If you are interested in steroids at all, especially if you use steroids you should buy this book. It is money well spent.

Customer Reviews:
good vs not so good.......2007-05-11
I recently bought Anabolics 2006 and Anabolic Steroids Ultimate research guide by Anthony Roberts. I read Anablics 2006 first and then Mr. Roberts book. I was done with the Ultimate research guide in about 20 minutes. It contained very little useful information had nothing on pct. Was poorly written, disorganized and had web site adds throughout. On the other hand Anabolics 2006 was a virtual steroid encyclopedia that was very informative and educational. I believe that both books where somewhat over priced Anabolics 2006 would be a better buy at say 45 dollars and The Ultimate steroid research guide maybe 10 dollars. The author of this book can basically charge whatever he wants because good quality information is so hard to come by wheras the other book I bought is nothing you couldnt learn on the internet by yourself in a couple of hours.
Glossy pages and nice weight to the book. Thats about it. .......2007-04-12
This book has all the standard info: profiles, etc. My major issue is that the author has little or no practical knowledge about steroid use and that some of the photos as miscategorized as legit products where they are not. How do I know? Let's just say I was involved with that product line.
There are much better books out there, but for the money, I cant see how someone could justify buying this even to supplement their library.
Anabolics 2006.......2006-06-22
This book has it all! Bill Llewellyn has been there, done that and speaks from first hand knowledge plus dedicated research. Learn all you need to know about every type of substance out there, plus plan your cycles with intelligence and research behind it.
This is a MUST have for the performance athlete!
Eighty Bucks? From a Geek?.......2006-06-19
Overpriced and too techno-geeky. Juiceheads out here are looking for information that is of practical use and not medical encyclopedias. And who you gonna trust for that kind of info? A technocrat who has no real world dirt under his fingernails, or someone who has Been There and Done That? As THE Man said, "If you write a book on steroids, at least look like you can pick up the book without straining a muscle!" Buy THE ultimate reference book as authored by THE man who knows this stuff and save yourself half the money on top of it. That book is the one authored by Anthony Roberts. Or Hooker to all his fans over at M&M forums and T-Nation! Enough said.

Book Description
Peripheral hormones have a major impact on the brain: they are able to interfere with its development, to affect release of neurotransmitters and concentrations of receptors, to trigger growth factors involved in lesion repair. These multiple actions account for their capacity to modulate a number of physiological parameters, from reproductive functions to memory, behaviour and aging. This book based on contributions of pioneer investigators in the field, outlines the role of hormones in pathogenic processes such as mental disturbances or neurodegenerative diseases.
Book Description
With over 330 scientific references, this book provides a comprehensive guide to the medical use of anabolic steroids, growth hormone, supplementation, optimal nutrition, and exercise to prevent and treat the loss of lean body mass and body alterations experienced by people with HIV.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide For The HIV+ Beginner Looking to LIVE!! .......2004-08-01
Just recently purchased and read this book. Excellent reference guide not just for anabolic steroid use, but for nutrition, supplements, exercise and much more. This is a must have and must keep resource book! A valuable treasure I will constantly, be able to refer to.
A useful tool in HIV health care.......2001-10-19
Nelson and Michael have put together an extraordinarily useful compilation of articles dealing with the causes and treatments of HIV wasting and the host of maladies that accompany it. The current acceptance of steroid, exercise and nutrition therapies to treat HIV can be directly attributed to the good work done by these activists.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly...it has profoundly effected my life for the better and is an important tool in my health care.
THE BEST "how to live with HIV" book on the market.......2001-09-20
Mooney and Vergel are committed. They have spent thousands of hours researching lecturing and in the case of Vergel living with their subject. The book provides in laymens terms but backed with numerous scientific citations, how to use exercise, supplements and steroid agents to make living with HIV bearable.
The advent of HAART has meant a change in the life expectency of HIV patients. As a result the toxic effects of the HIV drugs are seeing many complications and side effects. This book discusses many of these and provides hands on suggestions for dealing with them.
Even if you just exercise you will feel better and you may just slow some of the side effects. You may even reverse some.
I have followed this book very casually since I bought it in July last year up until April 2001. I noticed that my "blood" results (other than Viral Load) were getting better and despite 'failing' a drug combination, my overall health was great. For the last 3 months I have followed some of the books recommendations RELIGIOUSLY. Despite having to change drugs due to resistance, my health and fitness has increased amazingly. And as an added benefit friends say I look the best I have in 10 years. My waist has gone from 38" to 31". My chest, arms and legs have all increased in size. My CD4's both in real and % terms are the highest in 4 years and all my other blood works are excellent. I am 40 years young. 2 weeks ago I completed a Vitality and Longevity Analysis and my Doctor advised that I had the Celular Health of a 26 year old.
I am so confident of the book and the authors that I bought my Doctor a copy.
Life-saving information, especially for the HIV+.......2001-08-09
In 1988 I was told that I was seropositive, four years after Nelson Vergel learned of his status. For eight years I obediently followed doctors' orders, assuming with them that only prescriptions would be of help. After nearly dying in 1996, I discovered the website Medibolics, which evolved into this book. Following Vergel and Mooney's suggestions about supplementation and bodybuilding, in addition to the prescriptions, I am now again a healthy man, in fact probably in better shape than in my thirties before the infection. All lab counts are now within the recognized normal range, and there have been no opportunistic infections in five years. The authors' recommendations are thoroughly referenced for those who will read the original research for themselves. It was especially courageous for the authors to recognize the usefulness of anabolic steroids at a time when government policy has been severely restrictive. I remain profoundly grateful for Vergel and Mooney's work in a field that has been decisive for my own health. The information is relevant for the health of all, and serves as a concise starting point in a bewildering battery of literature.
manage my own health.......2001-08-08
thanks for your great work, since i followed your program i gained > almost TEN POUNDS in less than 2 MONTHS. Being on steroids is a great > asset in my life.....It changed my life...well, i mean NOW i have a > life. thanks very much for being there, we need you !!!! Bruno.

Book Description
Our understanding of the ways that neuroactive steroids act in the brain has been increased by transgenic approaches, recombinant expression systems, higher resolution electrophysiological paradigms, and the development of technology to localize receptors. Recent behavioral studies examining the effects of steroids on mood, seizure susceptibility, reproductive function, and sensorimotor control have shed new light on this complex field and inspired exciting developments. Neurosteroid Effects in the Central Nervous System: The Role of the GABAA Receptor presents a complete overview of the effects of neuroactive steroids in the brain, describes new methods for investigating these effects, and features the latest theories on steroid action in the central nervous system, with emphasis on the GABAA receptor. The text discusses techniques for receptor localization and quantification, recombinant expression systems to identify steroid-responsive receptor isoforms, the use of transgenic/antisense strategies to determine steroid effects on neuronal circuits and behavior, and techniques to examine the cellular effects of steroid action in the brain. The material covers the range of steroid action on such end points as mood, cognition, epilepsy, neuroprotection, and learning/plasticity, and it describes methods using molecular, electrophysiological, and behavioral techniques to link cellular mechanisms of steroid action with behavioral effects. This timely compilation provides important insight into the possibilities for steroid effects on the central nervous system. It will appeal to the clinical, behavioral, and molecular interests of research scientists, clinicians, and students interested in broadening their knowledge about neurosteroid effects with relevance to premenstrual syndrome and post-partum changes.

Book Description
The pressure is on.
At Nearmont High School, football stars are treated like royalty, and Matt Rydek has just ascended to the throne. As co-captain of the Raiders, he's got it all, or so it seems: hot girls, all the right friends, plenty of juice to make him strong, and a winning team poised to go all the way. If he can keep his eye on the ball now, his future will be set, with a full ride to a Division One school, a shot at the pros, and—most important—his dad off his back. But when the team turns on one of its own, should Matt play by Raiders rules, or should he go long alone?
Robert Lipsyte, an award-winning journalist, in consultation with Dr. Michael J. Miletic, a leading sports psychiatrist, takes a hard-hitting look at the world of competitive high school sports in a novel straight from today's headlines.
Customer Reviews:
A gripping tale so well-written.......2007-07-10
What's most amazing about this book, to me, is that it has all of the insight and vivid detail you'd expect from a prolific writer like Lipsyte, but he's captured the tone and pacing you'd expect to encounter in a high school. He truly immersed himself in the culture of high school and high-level high school sports, and he places the reader right there in the locker room and in conversations in a way you'd swear you were listening to two 17-year-olds talk.
The book is also an incredible tool in the fights against cruel hazing and doping. Without beating you over the head with the message, Lipsyte shows everything that is wrong with the darkest sides of sports. A must-read for every high school athlete.
A gripping inside look at the world of competitive high school sports.......2007-02-10
The Nearmont High School football season looks promising. The entire town expects great things from them --- Division, even State Championships --- and the team is on track for just such a season when they take off for preseason camp: two-a-day practices, morning wakeup calls, and Raider Pride Night, the traditional freshman initiation. Unfortunately, the ritual goes places it never should in ways that might compromise their entire season and ruin any chances they might have in college football and the pros.
"The biggest enemy of best is good. If you're satisfied with what's good, you'll never be the best."
Those words atop the Jerry Rice poster over Matt Rydeck's bed tell him everything he needs to know about football and life. He has to be willing to do what it takes, no matter what --- even if that involves staying loyal to his drug-using friends and even if that means using illegal steroids and Vicodin himself. They're supposed to take away the pain and help him heal faster. In the midst of all that, Matt would love to have a girl he could actually talk to, not just the typical girls who will follow any star receiver home after a party. He wants something more, someone with whom he can share his problems.
What would Matt's life be like without all the stress? Without having to hide what really happened that night at camp? Without the responsibility that comes with being team captain? Without the baggage of former one-night flings? With Dad in his face loading on the pressure to succeed, Matt needs a way out of his slowly suffocating world, and breaking a few rules and hearts seems like the only way out of town, to a life with a little more freedom.
In RAIDERS NIGHT, Robert Lipsyte has taken the experiences of "world-class athlete and sports psychiatrist" Michael J. Miletic, M.D. and re-molded them into a gripping story that's as fictional as it is real. The insider knowledge offers a glimpse into the competitive world of high school football players who are doing everything they can to make it to college and the pros, while at the same time navigate the complex webwork of their lives.

Richie's Picks: RAIDERS NIGHT.......2006-08-02
(Since writing this review, I have now read the book a second and a third time. This is definitely one of the best YA books of 2006 and unquestionably one of the best YA books relating to high school sports that I have ever read.)
"Richie! Richie! Richie!"
Imagine walking into a middle school classroom and finding the desks occupied by the likes of Joey Pigza, Sahara Special, Ruby Oliver, the Ally Sheedy character from The Breakfast Club, Cookie Monster, Roadrunner, Byron's friend Buphead, Jordan Catalano, and various other scholastically, socially, and/or hormonally challenged characters.
This was what it sometimes seemed like when I was standing in front of my wife's third period English class this past school year. The class was made up of a select, especially wonderful assemblage of students whom it was decided might benefit from being gathered together into a smaller class. And it was just as much fun for me to be in there as it might sound. (Of course, as Shari would immediately point out, Richie the middle aged adolescent guy didn't have to control the class; he could just be entertaining and be entertained, in turn, by them.)
It was a great opportunity to test whether those "high interest" YAs really are as "high interest" as I've always claimed them to be. And so we read aloud and discussed Rodman Philbrick's THE LAST BOOK IN THE UNIVERSE, Todd Strasser's CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE, and Alex Flinn's FADE TO BLACK. Shari's hope was to work our way up to SPEAK, which she teaches to her other eighth grade English classes. But, alas, the introspective, sarcastic voice of Melinda Sordino was way over too many of their heads, and so SPEAK was abandoned after a week in favor of in-your-face Zach Wahhsted from Terry Trueman's INSIDE OUT.
In addition to their enthusiasm (They really would sometimes chant "Richie! Richie!" when I'd get up there to read aloud), it was heartening to see their willingness to take steps toward more scholarly behavior such as showing up close to the time when the bell rang, reluctantly but amicably forgoing mid-class snack times, and becoming attentive, in some cases, for significantly long periods of time.
And, yes, I'd say that the "high interest" YAs proved themselves to be just that.
During the time they were studying FADE TO BLACK, Shari and I had the opportunity to collaborate on a complementary research unit focused on HIV and AIDS. I was able to document the collaboration process along with the students' results and assessments as the final project for my Instructional Strategies class, and we all agreed -- adolescents and adults -- that we'd learned a lot from the search process and from the actual information that was gathered, evaluated, discussed, and compiled.
In chatting with friends about the success of the HIV/AIDS unit, I'd note that such exceptional work was being accomplished by a class of which three-quarters of the students were not being permitted to "walk" with their classmates; they were receiving "social promotions" to high school but, because of their accumulated lack of scholastic achievement, they weren't allowed to participate in the graduation exercises.
When, at one point, I spoke of this with a psychiatrist friend, he became quite emphatic in his opposition to such a policy. He told me that there are so few real rites of passage for most kids these days. He said it was a significant mistake on the part of the District to not permit those kids to participate in the ritual after spending three years in the school.
"Matt floated into the party a step behind Brody, who opened holes in the crowd with his smile. Brody reached out for guys to tap fists and girls to feel up. Ever since he was in PeeWee, All-Brody had acted like he was walking on a red carpet, but nobody seemed to mind. He could say anything to anybody. Guys trusted him in the huddle and girls couldn't keep their hands off him. He had left the football in the car. He was looking to score tonight.
"The beer and Vic buzz carried Matt over the upturned faces. 'Yo, Matt...Lookin' good, my man...Where's Amanda...Ready for hell, hoss?' He felt the words more than heard them, like hundreds of fingers plucking at him. Good thing Brody's driving tonight. Matt grinned back at people, winked, tapped a few fists, squeezed a few soft arms that came out of the crowd to encircle him like snakes then fell away brushing the length of his body. He smelled perfume and armpits. He waved back at Pete, in a corner with Lisa. They talked about everything. Pathetic, Matt thought, then wondered what it would be like to have someone you could really talk to.
" 'Start the party,' Ramp bellowed. 'Captains are here.' His shoulders cleared a path and he was suddenly beside Matt, throwing a heavy arm around his neck, thrusting a can of beer in his hand. In this kind of crowd, Ramp always acted like they were buds. Otherwise, he made wiseass remarks and kept his distance. Been like that since PeeWee, teammates but never friends.
" 'Wassup?' Can't just blow Ramp off with everybody watching.
" 'Hear about the transfer from Bergan Central?' said Ramp.
" Bergan Central was in another conference. He didn't know any of their players. 'What about?'
" 'Sophomore tight end. Thinks he's just gonna show up and play.' Ramp sounded angry. Ramp was a great linebacker, but only a so-so tight end. He didn't want any competition."
After staying up until 3 AM the night before last, totally caught up in reading Robert Lipsyte's RAIDERS NIGHT, I slept a few hours and then sat down at the laptop. My first inclination was to find more about anabolic steroids and Vicodin, the two drugs being used regularly by Matt Rydeck, the Nearmont high school senior around whom the story revolves. I then proceeded to dig up some information about California's recently enacted rules on training coaches who work in high school athletic programs -- rules enacted as the result of widespread use of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances by high school athletes.
But where my information gathering ultimately led me was to an exploration of hazing and ritual and the necessity of devising bonding rituals that really create community.
Central to the plot of RAIDERS NIGHT, and to what the title refers, is the final night of Nearmont High's football training camp and the "bonding" ritual inflicted each year by the senior players upon the new guys. The ritual portrayed in the story is homophobic in nature. Sadly, so I've been told, this is not an unusual attitude or occurrence in the real world.
What is unusual is that the ritual in Lipsyte's story gets out of hand when Ramp, the team Neanderthal and co-captain, graphically abuses the young transfer hotshot whose substantial talent threatens to significantly reduce Ramp's own playing time during the coming season.
Matt Rydeck is the other co-captain and the real story here involves Captain Matt's relationships and behavior in regard to his chemical intake, his teammates, his girlfriends, his parents, his developmentally disabled older brother and, of course, his abused teammate.
In SPEAK, the Michael Printz Honor book with the vital message about looking out for the welfare of all the members of one's school community, readers at first don't know what has happened to Melinda to make her call the cops, but gradually they come to learn the facts when she finally begins to let herself remember. In RAIDERS NIGHT, we see what happens to Chris (the transfer student) but don't have any idea about Chris's subsequent thoughts and behavior during the extended period of time when Matt is too confused and too caught up in the rest of his drug, girl, and parent-crazed life to do or say anything about what has befallen the kid whom he, as co-captain, should have been protecting from the Neanderthal.
As a reader of RAIDERS NIGHT, one might be tempted to blame Matt's behavior on his father's being such an a-hole -- which he truly is. But, hey, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who could spend an hour or two spewing about how so many of my own bad habits are the result of my father's misparenting or setting a bad example. The bottom line, as Matt eventually figures out, is that you are dealt what you are dealt, and the measure of a young man is who he decides he is going to be and what he decides he is going to stand for, irrespective of the influence exerted by parents (or peers).
We do need to be talking about behavior and attitudes of adults is in terms of the rituals in the lives of adolescents. We don't want to do away with rituals. What is needed instead is for adults to ensure that bonding rituals and rites of passage are positive and inclusive to the benefit of the entire group, team, or community.
RAIDERS NIGHT is one hell of a story. I'd never before read any of Robert Lipsyte's YA fiction, but am now feeling lots of admiration for the members of the Margaret Edwards Award committee who were responsible for voting Lipsyte that honor a few years ago. You can bet I'll be reading more of his books. And, no doubt, people will be hearing me speak more about RAIDERS NIGHT, both in upcoming presentations, and when the time rolls around to debate the best books of 2006.
