2 out of 5 stars Typical Engineering Textbook.......2006-11-06

This book is written much like your typical engineering textbook, which means it will probably stress out non-engineers. The organization of the book is unintuitive, especially for an undergraduate, which makes doing homework with it unecessarily time consuming. In addition, the index is very limited. I would have prefered an alternative for my undergrad Hydro class.

5 out of 5 stars thorough, well-defined, fluent.......2005-01-14

I was very happy to use this text throughout my course on Hydrogeology. The verbage was succinct, the problems were applicable and well-complimented with the website for explanations, and the chapter reviews were impendious. At the end of each chapter, Fetter cocnluded with a detail of symbols; which I found to be a nice touch. Often an author uses a symbol once and expects the reader to always retain its significance, which is an unreal circumstance. The case studies were necessary to hammer home a concept! They were well-written and facilitated the goal of explaining a hydrogeological problem, and a solution.
The typographical errors of the first edition were corrected in this edition.
I recommend this text to all aspiring earth scientists.

5 out of 5 stars Relieved to find........2004-01-28

I found this book the easiest to read, compaired to a few other groundwater textbooks out there. It concentrates on the practical applications as opposed to formula derivations.

3 out of 5 stars Did anyone proof read this text before it went to print?.......2001-06-29

I have the 3rd edition which I purchased in 1995 and although I enjoy the subject matter and use this book as a reference, I am still finding errors and making corrections to the textbook (typos in both text and problem sets). Someone should have paid closer attention to detail prior to submission to the publisher. I was going to get the 4th addition to add to my personal library, hoping there would be no errors. However, after a few minutes of research on the internet I found out that there are still errors in the 4th addition. However, the author does have a webpage with corrections posted. I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone unless they have time and are willing to go through the text to make the corrections. There are other texts in print covering the same subject matter with fewer or no errors.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written, Thoroughly Explain Text.......2001-05-11

As a student I was relieved to read ideas that were explained clearly, especially in the water chemistry chapter. I also appreciated how well the formulas were presented. The problems at the end of the chapter were a great way to study for exams.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual.......2006-12-20

I've been working on geochemistry and hydro-geochemistry for the last three years and this book represent an "easy-to-follow" compendium of the most usual problems and situations that you can find on field. The author's explanations to some problems are quite ingenious and help to solve, in a practical way, most of the difficulties that you can find in real natural systems.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Approach to a Complicated Subject.......2006-07-25

The authors have managed to take a subject that can be dry and intimidating and make it readable and enjoyable. I have been in the consulting business as a hydrogeologist for 20 years, and found that I needed to review "the basics" due to a career change to Water Resources. I found the book to be well organized, well written, and especially useful were all of the examples provided. I think it would be a very good book for students (those just starting out) and for those, like me, who need to review subjects, such as "aquifer hydraulics." And, the chapter "How to Get Along with Driller's" should be mandatory reading for all students of geology/hydrogeology/engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Get a file with known corrections.......2003-11-25

Greating readers. I have a PDF files that contains all of the corrections or errors know as of Nov 10, 2003. Please email for a copy of this document at wweight@mtech.edu. Happy Reading. Willis Weight

5 out of 5 stars Job Well Done.......2001-10-21

This book should be required reading by every professional entering the field of hydrogeology - especially those with limited experience in groundwater science. the authors present the material in an easy to read format as though they were mentoring entry level geologists. A job well done.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome reference.......2001-04-20

I've been working as a geologist for an environmental firm specializing in UST remediation for about six months. Having been working in a tangentally related field for six years, I needed a quick refresher. This book is providing that refresher - it will also prove an excellent reference for years to come. I found especially useful the portion on slug testing - my old college texts discuss slug testing but in a highly theoretical and impractical manner.

This is a great book, for sure the best and most comprehensive book on stochastic hydrogeology available today. It covers nearly all the fundamental and practical aspects of stochastic hydrogeology, with emphasis on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline. The language is simple, with many examples and case studies. The book is a great reference for scientists who are familiar with stochastic hydrogeology as well as for students and/or practitioners who may get informed about the discipline and learn how to implement the various tools available. The book is at the same time a very good introduction to the matter and a reference book for people who are already familiar with stochastic hydrogeology and want to keep updated with the most recent developments. This is the kind of book to keep on the desk.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook!.......2004-06-20

Applied Stochastic Hydrogeology is easily the best book of this century in its field. Its intuitive and down-to-earth style makes even the most intricate aspects of stochastic analyses readily accessible to both graduate students and active researchers. The subjects the book covers range from stochastic site characterization and image reconstruction from sparse data to the concept of effective hydraulic parameters and probabilistic assessment of flow and transport in heterogeneous environments.

    Book Description

Hydrology is a topical and growing subject, as the earth's water resources become scarcer and more vulnerable. Although more than half the surface area of continents is covered with hard fractured rocks, there has until now been no single book available dealing specifically with fractured rock hydrogeology.
This book deals comprehensively with the fundamental principles for understanding these rocks, as well as with exploration techniques and assessment. It also provides in-depth discussion of structural mapping, remote sensing, geophysical exploration, GIS, field hydraulic testing, groundwater quality and contamination, geothermal reservoirs, and resources assessment and management.
Hydrogeological aspects of various lithology groups, including crystalline rocks, volcanic rocks, carbonate rocks and clastic formations, are dealt with separately, using and discussing examples from all over the world.
Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks will be an invaluable reference source for postgraduate students, researchers, exploration scientists, and engineers engaged in the field of groundwater development in fractured rock areas.

I purchased and used this as an alternate textbook to Drever's Geochemistry of Natural Waters for a graduate level course in Chemical Hydrogeology that I took during completion of my Masters. Book Description

Hydrogeology is a crucial and increasingly topical subject. Groundwater is one of the world's most vital resources, providing a large proportion of the water supplies in many countries. Although naturally of very high quality, groundwater is being insidiously polluted by the careless and ignorant actions of man. This book reflects the concern of specialists about the deterioration of groundwater quality as a result of waste disposal, acid rain, drainage, and agricultural practices. It discusses the feasibility of harnessing geothermal energy and the repercussions of deep disposal of nuclear waste. Recent research and practical methodologies used in hydrogeology are described, and consideration is given to recent management changes in the water industry and the integration of groundwater development with other water sources. This book will be of interest to all who are concerned with the development of groundwater resources and with maintaining their quality.

        Book Description

In order to properly plan, design, and operate groundwater resources projects, it is necessary to measure - over time or distance - pertinent groundwater variables such as drawdown and discharge in the field. Applied Hydrogeology for Scientists and Engineers shows how to assess and interpret these data by subsurface geological setup and processing. The book helps readers estimate relevant groundwater parameters such as storativity, transmissivity, and leakage coefficient. The text addresses many interrelated disciplines such as geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, engineering, petroleum geology, and water engineering. Traditional and current models for application are presented. One of the unique features of the book is the inclusion of new and previously unpublished ideas, concepts, techniques, approaches, and procedures developed by the author. Among these are hydrogeophysical concepts, slope matching techniques, volumetric approach solution for complicated groundwater flows, non-Darcian flow law applications, aquifer sample functions, dimensionless-type straight line methods, non-linear flow-type curves, discharge calculations from early time-drawdown data, storage coefficient estimation procedure for quasi-steady state flow, and much more. The pitfalls in aquifer test analysis are also detailed. Fractured medium flow adds yet another dimension to the book. Each method is supplemented by actual field data applications from worldwide case studies.Applied Hydrogeology for Scientists and Engineers covers the topics of groundwater reservoirs, the evaluation of aquifer parameters, aquifer and flow properties, flow properties and bore hole tests, aquifer tests in porous and fractured media, well hydraulics, groundwater flow and aquifer tests, and field measurements and their interpretations. This new reference also works well as a post-graduate textbook on the subject. Applied Hydrogeology for Scientists and Engineers expands the reader's knowledge by providing valuable information not found in any other publication.

        4 out of 5 stars Quantitative Hydrogeology.......2003-04-19

This book takes a quantitative approach to groundwater flow, aquifer properties, and aquifer test analysis. Chemical properties, hydrologic cycle, evolution of groundwater and resource evaluation are not discussed here. This book is intended for those who wish to gain a better understanding flow characteristics, steady-state, porous and fractured medium aquifer testing and analysis. The chapters on aquifer tests are well done especially the section on nonlinear flow where Darcy's law is inadequate for high Reynold's numbers. Many of the diagrams are hand-drawn. Overall a really good book. I would recommend it to those who want more than that found in the introductory hydrogeology texts.

            Book Description

Hardbound. In 1980, Nagra, the Swiss National Cooperative for the Storage of Radioactive Waste, began a comprehensive field investigation programme to assess the feasibility and safety of a repository for the final disposal of high-level radioactive waste in northern Switzerland. An international team of scientists has carried out a comprehensive study on the isotope hydrogeology of deep groundwaters. One of the major implications of this work pertains to the storage of radioactive waste. The study goes far beyond an in-depth regional study as it draws together the results of diverse techniques, many of which have been re-evaluated or further developed.

This book presents in great detail the results of one of the most comprehensive isotope hydrology studies ever undertaken.
