Book Description

The field of synthetic membrane science and technology is an active, growing field involving an interdisciplinary mixture of polymer chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering. Some membrane processes are reasonably well understood, and have been commercialised for some period of time. Other membrane processes have only recently been employed in commercial applications, and still other processes are only in formative research stages.
This volume gives a comprehensive compendium of the basic principles in the field of synthetic membranes. The following topics are covered: basic aspects of membrane processes; materials and material properties; membrane preparation and characterisation; membrane transport; concentration polarisation and fouling; process and module design. The second edition of this well-established text has been considerably expanded and updated, and many chapters now contain sections giving solved and unsolved problems.
Audience: This book is recommended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a comprehensive reference for engineers, scientists, and technical management.

5 out of 5 stars From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control.......2006-07-10

This book is an excellent reference on Chemical Engineering Principles and Calculations for any engineer or practitioner working in the process industries. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical Engineering issues in a day to day basic.

I have found this book to be an ideal self-study guide. In this Edition the authors have included several categories of problems sets to assist in self-study. Self-assessment tests with answers (in Appendix A) follow each section, and thought and discussion problems follow the self-assessment tests.

If a non Chemical Engineer can learn Chemical Engineering Principles from this book, I guarantee that any Chemical Engineering student or practitioner will find this readable textbook very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Chemical/Process Engineer.......2006-06-30

This book is well worth the money. I was very impressed by the examples and excellent explanations. Highly recommend this book to any chemical or process engineer

5 out of 5 stars A winner text!.......2004-07-29

This book is a classic . With all my respects to the next authors , this book belongs from its initial release to a selected dinasty of works made with an unusual passion style , and that invisible factor seems to make the clear difference . The presentation , the precise comments and the appraoch given to every chapter where the essential concepts of Mass balance or Energy balance are so brilliantly shown that it is literally impossible for you not to win with this .
And after you bought it you will wonder in silent voice of course ( Do we need a teacher for Chemical Engineering Principles? ) .
If you acquire this one and then the Whitwell and Tonner (see my review) , How can you lose ?
Fundamental for Chemical , Production and Industrial Engineering.

5 out of 5 stars solving simultaneou material and energy balance.......2003-09-30

When coal is distilled by heating without contact with air, a wide variety of solid, liquid, and gadeous products of commercial importance is produced, as well as some significant air pollutants. The nature and amounts of the products produced depend on the temperature used in the decomposition and the type of coal. At low temperatures(400 to 750 Centigrade)the yield of synthesis gas is small relative to the yield of liquid products, whereas at high temperatures (above 900 Centigrade) the reverse is true. For the typical process flowsheet, shown in Figure P6.23:
(a)How many tons of the various products are being produced?
(b)Make an energy balance around the primary dislillation tower and benzol tower.
(c)How much (in pounds) of 40% NaOH solution is used per day for the purification of phenol?
(d)How much 50% Sulfuric acid is used per day in the pyridine purification?
(e)What weight of Sodium Sulfate is produced per day by the plant?
(f)How many cubic feet of gas per day are produced? What percent of the gas (volume)is needed for the ovens?

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book.......2000-06-19

Basic Principles and Calculations in Chemical Engineering is an excellent text book. The First Chapter explains essential definitions and informations that we need before studying Chemical Engineering. This Chapter also explains English unit system. In overall, the book in very useful for teaching Chemical Engineering undergraduate students. It helps the lecturers how to teach and the students how to learn material and energy balance which in essential to know for all chemical engineers. The only problem with this book is the English units which are not currently used very often. If the author could change the English units to SI units, it would be great.

5 out of 5 stars easy to understand.......2001-05-28

Although I am only in the chapter 2 right now, I can't wait to share my feelings. Compare to other books that I've read before, this book is easier to understand. The author didn't use some beautiful words or unmeaning words. He just got the point. For further reserching, this might be insufficient, but for technician like me or anyone who wants to know about MRI, this book will be the best choice to the avenue to understanding.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory text for MRI.......2000-04-27

As a scientist that uses MRI on a daily basis I have often wanted to write a book for introducing the subject to the many students, technologists, and other interested parties that wish to use MRI in their work. Fortunately, Brown and Semelka have written it for me (the royalites would be nice though!). The book is excellent in presenting the complexities of magnetic resonance imaging in a straight forward intuitive physical picture. The authors then proceed to descibe most of the main MRI techniques leaving the reader with a firm understanding about each imaging sequence. The book addresses in short but nonetheless satisfactory fashion such issues as image contrast, prepatory pulses, imaging artifacts and methods to reduce artifacts. The authors include a chapter covering the main components of any MR imager which should reduce the bewilderment that most novices have when they must walk into the equipment room. Finally, the authors cover several areas of application in the last few chapters reviewing the main topics of each. A list of leading references and suggested readings are included at the end of the book if the reader desires more in depth information. The book is compact, inexpensive and should be the first book for anyone looking to MRI as a tool for their work.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars OK, but not great........2005-04-29

The real strength of this book is in its compilation of a vast amount of physical data in tables and spectra. It is geared towards the practical chemist who wants to learn and understand classical NMR spectroscopy. The physicist will be disappointed by the convoluted explanations and lengthy paragraphs. There are no errors in the book as far as I know, but the explanations given and proofs aren't necessarily the shortest and most elegant. You'd need to consult other books for that. Also disappointing is its wide use of old school quantum mechanical wave functions rather than density matrix notation. While this is fine, it makes the derivations too long, and for no good reason.

Also disappointing is the price of $100 for a paperback! I boought this book 2 years ago for $70 at a local bookstore. How can the publisher increase its price by $30 over two years? This is absolutely scandalous given that it is only a paperback. You'd be better off buying a cheap pirate Chinese edition for $10.

5 out of 5 stars A complete and comprehensive book about NMR.......2001-06-18

I strongly recommend this book about NMR principles by Harald Gunther. I study chemistry and it was useful for me in structural analysis of organic compounds. I think its most atracttive feature is the the clear and comprehensive way that uses to describe the NMR principles and experiments (including pulse experiments and 2D NMR). You understand what you read without having to read it once again. This book is also very complete and includes some solved exercises
