school required purchase.......2007-08-23
The high school required the purchase of this book for the AP Chemistry class. I was pleased it was so easily accessible and used copies were available. The school year just began, I am sure it must be a good source of help for the students since the teacher is requiring it at the beginning of the year.
Great review book.......2007-07-27
This book covers almost all topics you'll see on the actual test. And it really helps if you need an overall review just before the test.
However, it didn't cover much on the Organic and Nuclear chemistry. Well, even though these two topics are not emphasized(about 5 MC), you really need to go over them if you really want a 5 on the test.
And, do every question(including the free response questions).
Be confident, the actual test will be easier than you have thought.
cracking the ap chemistry exam.......2007-06-12
The book was written in - in PEN! All the answers ! It made for a waste of time and money to get a book you could not use as a study tool.
A Very Concise Review Book.......2007-05-23
This review book has been really helpful in preparaing me for the AP Chem exam. Unlike other review books, this book does not include a whole lot of review information. This is good because when you review, too much conceptual reviews can actually hinder the review process, something that Baron review books tend to do very much. In addition, the problems on the back of every section are very useful, although it's actually a little harder than the actual problems on the exam. Overall, this book has been very helpful.
AP Chemistry .......2007-05-14
This book is an excellent review source for the AP Chemistry exam. I was very satisfied with the material. The only problem noted was that the free response section of the review is not in the current format of the test. The material, however, is relevant. Would highly recommend this book!
Book Description
1001 Questions in MCAT Chemistry provides practice questions in all chemistry topics covered by the MCAT. The questions and explanations are designed to teach the student to think intuitively. Like the MCAT, conceptual thinking is encouraged while lengthy calculations are discouraged. Memorization of basic formulas is required, but usually will not, in itself, provide the fastest method to finding an answer. Questions are conveniently arranged by topic. Question difficulty ranges from easy to very difficult. Questions are formatted exactly like the MCAT. Answers and explanations are provided in the back of the book.

Examkrackers Chemistry.......2006-08-22
This is a very good book. Amazon shipped it right away, in excellent condition. This book will help you get ready for the MCATs by acting as your very own tutor. I recommend getting all of the Examkracker series.
Great for high yield review.......2006-05-15
To get into Med school after 15yrs in business I took my Organic Chem series over again, studied Exam Kracker's 101 series until I knew the books cold, listened to EK's Audio Osmosis about 10 times while communiting then took several full length practice tests.
Going in I thought I'd be taking it a 2nd time so I wasn't too stressed. Afterwards, I was even more sure I would be re-taking it. However, I managed a 30 (straight 10's) so I know anyone can.
Bottom line, MCAT is not about knowing a ton of details (unlike Step 1). Know the basics like EK teaches so you can apply the concepts anyway they ask the question. Then practice, practice and pracitce some more (yes, especially the essays). It will help cement the concepts in, but more importantly give you confidence.
My personal belief is reduced stress and being on top of your game test day are more important than which study aid you use. That said, EK's focused and yet whimsical style was perfect for me to go through it over and over until I knew it cold.
Excellent. Do be fooled by other texts, this rocks!!!.......2005-06-19
First of all, if you consider yourself a 'pre-med' and serious about the MCAT, then as such you probably would've done some research about your products you are using... judging from the other reviews, they have not.
These texts are for reviewing the SUBJECTS specifically... NOT for the MCAT!!! There designed to fill in the gaps you may have missed that some teachers 'leave out' during your education.
If you want reviews specifically for the MCAT, and you are already a master of all the subjects covered, then get the Examkrackers Complete Study Package here on Amazon.
The 1001 and 101 question series by Examkrackers is a great SUBJECT review for any student, premed or not. They explain difficult concepts in simple terms. Thanks EK!
Great chem review.......2005-06-03
This book really focuses on the topics that are tested on the MCAT. I'm pretty good in chemistry but this book made me extremely comfortable with all the topics. It's an excellent complement to any review book and I highly recommend it.
A must have for the Physical Sciences portion of the MCAT.......2004-07-23
If you want to score well on the physical sciences portion of the mcat, BUY THIS BOOK. I bought this book 5 weeks ago, and I feel much more confident about the material on the MCAT. Get this book for practice and drilling of concepts. If you don't know the material- DO NOT GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!! Like said above, review the material elsewhere, but if you wanna perfect your concepts get this book. Make sure you review the concept, though, before doing the problems. It's the general rule of thumb, that if you know the concept decently, and If you do problems (which this book has loads and loads, for example, there are 200 problems devoted JUST to acids and bases), then you will master the concept. I have improved my physical sciences scores now to a 12 up from a 9 in just 3 weeks. Granted, I worked very hard, but if you put your heart into this book, and really learn each and every one of these 1001 questions inside and out, meaning you learn why every answer choice is wrong, and why choices is correct, and also if you can give yourself problems just like the problems in the book, then there is absolutely no reason to not perform well on the Physical sciences test. Everyone says how the MCAT test is a thinking test is a valid statement for every section except for the physical sciences section. Only thinking you'll have to do is read and understand the passage (which, say if the passage is about magnetism, and you understand magnetism like thet back of your hand, is a joke), the rest of the test is simple math calculations and concepts. Good luck pre-meds-don't lose faith in yourself-the MCAT's are extremely difficult, but they are also predictable, and most importantly, conquerable.

Excellent book for Biology GRE Preparation.......2007-10-07
Although it's not marketed this way, Schaum's outline is a concise yet complete study guide for the Biology GRE subject test. Topics like the endocrine system, plant evolution and development, and nutrition, which are given short shrift in the Princeton Review and Kaplan study guides, are fully covered in this book. More diagrams are provided (although there are no color figures - ditto for PR and Kaplan), as well as handy review tables. The explanations are at an appropriate level for GRE examinees: there is not too much extraneous information. Occasionally, the authors will throw in a humorous aside or phrasing (see def. of sexual selection, parts of Ch.17, etc.), which makes you pay closer attention, but overall the tone is serious (no BS analogies or condescension here).
At the end of every chapter are worked problems in essay and multiple choice formats. These questions cover GRE material but aren't presented in the same style. If you're using this book for GRE preparation, you should also consider buying a book with one or more practice tests in order to familiarize yourself with the exam format.
This Book's Got It All!.......2007-01-17
I bought this book to prepare the DAT. It helped so much and I couldn't have made it without it. I do recommend it, it's way better than those common books dealing with how to prepare the DAT, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, they're just not as specific as this one. Totally worth the money, go for it!
Useful book for recalling established knowledge.......2006-11-08
Well organized, full text book with essential topics on biology. Excellent tool for GRE exams and anyone with basic knowledge on biology, who needs a quick reviewing.
GOOD Reference, LOTS to Read.......2006-07-25
My favorite chapters included Kingdom Fungi, Photosynthesis, excretory system and structure and function of chloroplasta. Like a previous reviewer, I used this book to prepare for the biology section of the DAT (Dental Admission Test). This is a good reference, it explains with examples that get the facts to stick to your brain. Yes, it requires studying, but then again what subject doesn't?
Another great book I totally recommend is "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations". Volumes 1,2 and 3. It is written by Patrick Leonardi. It is an excellent review for the biology portion of the DAT exam..
Too much information... Just make it simple.......2006-02-27
I was looking to get up to speed to teach an intro bio class for community college. After reviewing bio texts, I bought this book thinking that it would be a great summary, review and offer quiz questions for bio. I wanted it to be to the point, revelant, and a pithy supplement. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. This book didn't highlight or sum up bio. It went into in-depth discussions that might be of interest to grad students. I looked at Biology the Easy Way and liked it much better.

Chemistry: Concepts and Problems: A Self-Teaching Guide (Wiley Self-Teaching Guides).......2007-08-08
Years ago my high school chemistry teacher told me I was too dumb to understand chemistry. This book helped me pass out of introductory college chemistry and gave me the confidence to take on upper division chemistry classes as I pursue a second career as a certified nurse practioner.
The authors take you by the hand and walk step by step through a world that is logical and challenging. Their teaching method dispelled my fears of being too dumb and established a new found belief that I can and do understand chemistry.
I hope it will do the same for you.
Great layout, easy book to follow.......2007-05-24
I find this book a very thorough and painfully methodical step-by-step guide. Each concept is presented in a logical sequence and is broken into small pieces so it can be easily learned and absorbed. It has all the characteristics of good teaching: Small fractions of knowledge introduced progressively, frequent repetition, test questions on every other sentence, each piece is based on the previous, logical correlates and a sum-up test at the end of each passage. I don't mind the answers under each question, in fact I prefer it as it gives me instant feedback without having to flip back the pages 4 times a minute. I just hide the answers until I've answered the question. Even my cat could learn chemistry with this book. Brilliant!
Pretty good book.......2007-05-20
Useful information for someone who had chemistry 37 years ago and now taking it again. The information was pretty clear and the actual problems are easy to work. I got this book along with another one, and my "fears" were resolved before I even started the class.
Top Notch for Intro Chem.......2007-05-01
This book is fabulous. I purchased it so that I could more easily homeschool my eighth grader as I prepare him to take AP Chem next year. I have an excellent background in chemistry myself, so I was surprised to find myself looking at some topics in a fresh and helpful way. This book is easy to follow, with clear and understandable step-by-step problems making up each chapter. My 13 year old was coming up with the answers before I even finished asking the questions, it was that clear.
There are two reasons that I am only giving 4 stars:
1) I would have liked to see many more problems in order to reinforce the concepts that were so carefully laid out. I had to borrow a text book so that I could add more problems for my son.
2) I am aware of the possibility that my pre-existing understanding of the material might have allowed me to teach it more thoroughly and easily than your average homeschooler. It might not go into enough depth as a curriculum if you are looking for the whole enchilada. You might need to borrow another text to supplement it.
Overall...wonderful investment, inexpensive, great "frame" for introductory chemistry. I think this would be AMAZING as a "cheat" book for a high schooler or college student who is struggling.
Easy, simple, informative........2007-03-23
I didn't like chemistry at school but now I'm interested. It's excellent for learning the basics and doing it alone.
Book Description
Authored by Brent and Sheila Iverson, University of Texas, Austin, this comprehensive manual contains detailed solutions to all in-text and end-of-chapter problems. The best way for students to understand and learn the concepts of organic chemistry is to work multiple relevant and interesting problems on a daily basis. With this guide, the authors help students achieve a deeper intuitive understanding of the material through constant reinforcement and practice. The result will be much better preparation for in-class quizzes and tests, as well as the national standardized tests such as the DAT and MCAT. The solutions manual provides instant feedback by giving not only answers, but also detailed explanations.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-09-11
The book has signs of wear and tear, but other than that the book was great. With a better price than any bookstore can offer who could pass it up?
You cannot say "No.".......2007-01-04
Without this book, you are pretty much on your own when you are reading the main text. All the problems are solved clearly. Just reading it as a textbook can give you extra tips on somethings that you might have skipped in the book. Sometimes, you might get confused. Well, it is just chemistry. Read carefully.
Book Description
Updated to reflect the most recent tests, this manual presents two diagnostic tests and three full-length practice tests, all with questions answered and explained. A chemistry review covers the structure of matter, chemical bonding, states of matter, physical chemistry, chemical reactions, and all other topics tested on the Advanced Placement test.

Absolutely phenomenal.......2007-07-24
I had a terrible teacher for AP Chemistry, and about a month before the AP exam, I bought this book. I read it through the whole way, did all the practice questions, and got a 5! It was all the book, too; the next highest grade in the class was a 3.
This book will teach you everything you need to know for the exam. My only complaint was that I didn't get it any earlier -- I wish I could have used it to study for in-class tests as well :)
the most thorough AP chemistry book i have seen.......2007-01-24
if you want to get a 5, and have over a month to study (like me), you *need* this book. it's definitely longer than other books, so you'll have more to study from. however, if you're hoping for just a 3 or 4, and don't have too much time, you'll probably be ok with another book.
Good preparation for AP Chemistry.......2007-01-13
It's probably the best resource out there for preparation for the Advanced Placement Chemistry exam. It tells you what to expect, gives a study schedule, gives you practice exams with explanations, and is very up-to-date. It's not a must-have though, because there are plenty of other good resources out there.
A must buy!.......2006-12-27
The AP Chemistry exam is certainly one of the hardest. However, my high school teacher taught like a college professor, which made the exam easy as child's play. The AP class was offered during first semester in my school, and I had to take the exam at the end of the year...like three months later. The Barron's book helped me tremendously in review and practice. I flipped through the book and read all the material I remembered my teacher lecturing about. And then, I skipped the contents that I know won't be on the test. Furthermore, I scored a 5 and I accidentally skipped a portion on the free response. I found out about that like one minute before time was called. But I still walked out of the testing room confident with this book.
DEFINITELY YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS.......2006-07-04
This book is GREAT for its content; it covers all the topics in specific detail, though some are clearly superfluous. It really helped me on the experimental parts (i.e. common colors or smells of chemicals, etc). I did not take any of the practice tests in this book because I knew and heard that they were insanely hard and depressing. Instead, I took the practice tests out of the Princeton Review AP Chemistry and scored a 5 on both of them. I recently just received my score and I got a 5! This book is a must for those who want a thorough review on AP Chemistry.
Book Description
The best and most up-to-date study guide of its kind, this book summarizes the chemical principles of a first course in college chemistry through problems with clearly explained solutions. This new edition reflects changes in the major current textbooks, and it contains up-to-date information about newer techniques used in environmental chemistry, biochemistry and medicinal chemistry.

Just Perfect.......2007-06-23
I got this and some other books to get my son ready for HS Honors Chemistry over the Summer. It is just the right level. The many detailed worked examples are clear and there are lots of extra problems to practice on. I looked at quite a few others including Schaum's more general "General Chemistry" and this was the best.
With this book, I became self-taught in chemistry.......2007-02-02
A few years out of high school, I was working construction and decided that it was time to go to college. After doing an agonizing reappraisal of my finances, I realized that I could not afford to either take the time off work or pay a great deal for tuition. I had recently read a brief article in an issue of Reader's Digest that described the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. Realizing that this would be an option for college credit and then discovering that there was a CLEP test for chemistry, I purchased this book and began studying.
It was very hard at first, balancing the chemical equations was a form of algebra problem far beyond those I was familiar with. Nevertheless, I persevered in two ways. I managed to work my way through the book doing nearly all of the problems and I also passed the CLEP chemistry test with flying colors. I then went on to get a chemistry major and only once did I slip below an A.
While I don't belittle the amount of time and effort I put forth, it was the quality of this book that got me through. While the problems were hard, they were still doable and once done, you have learned the material. No higher praise can be given.
Excellent textbook.......2006-08-31
This is a superb self help textbook which provides concise, clear and easy to understand material. The solutions are really simple to follow. I truly recommend to anyone who needs a guide to his or her chemistry studies.
Excellent self-contained inexpensive chemistry textbook.......2006-07-15
This has got to be just about one of the best Schaum's outlines available, and that is saying a lot, since there are many good ones. I picked up a copy for self study due to a domino effect - I was attempting to learn molecular biology, which caused me to review my college biology, which in turn meant remembering my college chemistry.
I bought this book and read and worked through the exercises from chapter one on quantities and units through chapter 17, acids and bases. At no time did I need to seek out another textbook to solve the problems. Everything you need as far as "lecture" is in the outline. All included tables, figures, definitions, explanations, and example problems are complete and excellent. None of the mathematics involved in chemistry calculations is difficult, but the rules can get involved and you need a good book like this one to explain all of the variations involved in solving problems.
Chapters 1 through 14 cover what you would normally learn in a two semester sequence of college chemistry. From that point on in the outline there are a series of miscellaneous topics. Of course, the one I appreciated the most was chapter 15 on organic chemistry and biochemistry, because it directly relates to what I needed to know so I could read the references to chemistry in the biology books without scratching my head. There are also additional chapters on thermodynamics and chemistry, acids and bases, metal ions, electricity and chemistry, and the chemistry of nuclear processes.
Whether you are a college chemistry student, or someone like me who needs to review the topic, I strongly advise you to pick up a copy of this inexpensive yet extremely clear and complete Schaum's outline. It also serves as a great reference after you finish your studies.
This is what a chemistry help book should be!.......2006-02-14
Over the passed few months, I have been buying a lot of chemistry help books to help me survive college chemistry. I have bought the more popular ones like Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry. Both of these books are ok, but the part that they really lack is that they didn't adequately help me in the math of chemistry. In fact, it's actually kind of misleading to read these books, and then take a chemistry class. Because these books brush over the math of chemistry so much that I was led to believe that chemistry didn't have that much math in it. But nothing could be further from the truth! When I took my first chemistry class, I felt like I had more math than I did in my actual math class. And, unfortunately, both Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry didn't help out too much in this area (and to make matters worse, the FEW examples of math based chemistry problems they had were ridiculously easy.)
I was fed up. I had spent money on two chemistry books that were near worthless as far as helping me out with the math. And when it came to chemistry 102, Chemistry for Dummies might as well have been cast into a fire.. as it doesn't seem to cover much of anything passed chemistry 101 (just look up "enthalpy" in the index... it doesn't even merit a mention in Chemistry for Dummies!). After I told my professor about my problem, he showed me Schaum's Outlines for College Chemistry. I thought, "Oh great, another worthless chemistry book." But then when I flipped through it, it was like a dream come true. Not only does it cover just about every single topic from chemistry 101 AND 102, it also has page after page after page of examples of math based chemistry problems, and it breaks the problems down so that I could teach myself how to work the math problems.
And incase anyone is wondering, yes it does explain the main topics in chemistry. So it's not just a straight math book. The explanations are a little dry compared to Chemistry for Dummies and the Idiot's Guide to Chemistry, but this book is so infinitely awesome in every other way, that this is easily forgivable (besides, the Dummies and Idiot's book may be more fun to read, but they do so at the sacrifice of information, and are often overly simplistic).
As far as I'm concerned this is a TRUE chemistry help book. It is by far the most complete chemistry help book I have ever seen. Remember this: chemistry is not a spectator sport. It is a lot of math, and math must be practiced over and over until it is mastered. Chemistry is not a subject like biology where all you have to do is "read it and memorize it". If you're looking for a good chemistry help book, then I don't think you have to look any further than Schaum's College Chemistry.

Ok.......2007-05-31
Again Barrons keeps to its style of writing review books that are somewhat more difficult than the actual test. Overall I think they have a good book here. Unfortunately there are some noticeable typos, wrong answers in practice exams and that sort of thing. However if you are decent, they won't be a problem and you'll benefit from the 4 practice exams in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book! (I scored 800).......2005-02-05
This is an truely excellent book. I am not fortunate to have a very deep chemistry curriculum available in the schools in my city (it is actually well recognized as being terrible) but after completing all the chemistry courses available to me I ordered this book off Amazon and realized how much I did not know. I probably spent about 30 mins a night every night give or take for a month, near the end studying several hours everyday. The lab questions in this book, what I found to be the most difficult part, are largely useless and are not on the actual exam but are still good practice.
I would however advise this book for only those seeking to achieve high scores because the content is somewhat difficult and demanding. Good luck
Extraneous info...myriad typos.......2004-06-02
This book has a lot of information in it, but the extraneous matter shifts your focus away from the important stuff that's actually covered on the test. The practice tests in the book in no way reflect the real ones. Worst of all, there are countless mistakes, typos, and missing answers. Don't buy this book.
Long and Detailed Review.......2003-06-08
The Barron's SAT II Chemistry book is extremely long and detailed and has tests that exaggerate difficulty. Each chapter does a good job of covering the core material but it also adds alot of extra information that will probably not be seen on the test. In fact, in the nuclear chemistry section, the book goes into sub atomic particles known as quarks, which havent been seen on the test in ages. The practice tests at first are very pessimistic and are quite difficult.
Yet, if you do study this book completely, take the practice test and correct your answers, there is no reason you shouldnt get an 800 on the SAT II. I found the exaggerated difficulty annoying at sometimes, but, its a tough way of forcing you to do good. In short, if you have plenty of time to prepare for the SAT II, buy this book, and do it cover to cover. Your results should be wonderful.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!!!.......2002-10-13
Way too much unneccessary information. It's too compact. Most of the stuff do not appear on the real SAT II. It will give you a migraine every time you intend to study from it. But if you do buy this book, stay away from the laboratory setups, and do not attempt to memorize anything. It's useless and come test day you will be juggling pieces of rubbish in your head.
Chem SATII Review by a Chemistry Teacher.......2002-05-29
An excellent Chem SATII prep guide--includes 5 practice tests with correct answers and their explanations, test breakdowns by subject matter, and chemistry content summaries by topic.
Cautions:
Be aware that there are some typos/incorrect answers to test questions. The book also emphasizes laboratory set-ups and some chemical reactions that aren't likely to be part of ANY high school chemistry curriculum for safety reasons (i.e., collection of H2S and HCl gases); nor are they part of most current Chem SAT II tests.
