Helpful Resource .......2007-10-09
I purchased this book in April in preparation for an early August GRE. The Barron's book was my main source of preparation. I created a study schedule up to the date of the test, based on the material in this book. I did EVERY practice exercise. The book is very thorough. I found all sections to be helpful. My personal weakness was/is Math so I did get the Ultimate Math Refresher the last 2 1/2 weeks before the test. I highly recommend that also. I also purchased the GRE Official Guide so I could get some extra Math practice in. I worked with the GRE Powerprep as well. Still, Barron's was my primary source. The Barron's writing section was very helpful in my opinion, but writing is probably one of my better suits. If it's not yours, you may want to try a supplement to the Barron's book. I DID study all 50 of the vocab. lists in the Barron's book. I'd say that's pretty important. So, how did I do on the exam? I scored 670 in Math, 700 in Verbal, and 5.5 on the writing. Good luck to you!
Pretty comprehensive review.......2007-10-04
I couldn't decide between this book and the Princeton Review book (Cracking the GRE, 2007 Edition (Graduate Test Prep)), so I ended up buying & using both. Clearly, Barron's has an extensive vocabulary list. I must admit that, in the end, I wasn't able to study all the words (there's so many!), but there's a high-frequency word list that helps you prioritize which words you should be sure to learn. In comparison to the PR book, Barron's had a lot more exercises; there's a group of exercises at the end of each section. That gave me a lot of practice in applying concepts that I had just reviewed. Also, the book has 5 model tests, which means you have a lot of chances to practice. However, since these are paper-based tests, they're different from the CAT test that you'll actually be taking, and they don't really reflect what your actual scores will be. The CD that comes with this edition of the book simply didn't compare to the online supplement to the PR book. Of interest on the CD are a diagnostic test and a CAT practice test. However, the practice test on the CD recycles all the questions you see in the 5 tests in the book. I took all the tests in the book before I took the one on the CD, and let's just say my score was a little higher than expected because I had remembered the answers to a lot of the questions. I think Barron's gave a pretty good review of the material that shows up on the GRE, but I'd recommend the PR book if you want to get a better idea of how you'll actually do on the GRE.
Excellent GRE prep.. with a couple of caveats.......2007-09-28
I tend to over-research everything, so before embarking on my GRE prep I spent the better part of a day in my neighborhood B&N looking at the plethora (that's a GRE word right there) of prep books available for purchase. My eventual conclusion was that Barron's approach appears to differ substantially from all the other guides, in that it does not place much emphasis on "hacking" the GRE. Instead, it gives you well-thought out guidance and practice opportunities, all with the bare minimum of fluff (I am looking at you, Kaplan). In any case, I gradually became convinced that Barron's would be best suited for my studying style and goals, and it was therefore the only guide that I've used in the course of my GRE prep, along with some freely available ETS materials that I'll touch on in a bit.
So, a month later, with the test finally behind me and having scored in the high 700s on both sections, I still feel that Barron's is a quality product. Firstly, the word lists are excellent; there were at least 3 words on the actual test that I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for Barron's "Essential" list. The ginormous 3500 word list is also quite useful, although I found the word selection to be a little arbitrary -- there are some weirdly specialized terms (tessellated?), and a couple of words felt antiquated (benison? really now). I did like how Barron's went the extra mile with the example sentences -- some were unexpectedly clever and good for a chuckle. Having said that, Barron's also appears to place too much importance on distinguishing fine shades of meaning -- some of the analogies are almost guaranteed to give you a headache, and I thought that the Powerprep and the real GRE were considerably less anal-retentive on that front. Also, the Analytical Writing section is quite short; it won't help you much if your writing skills aren't already reasonably up to par. On the plus side, it has some valuable tips about adapting your writing to the GRE format; the information about structuring your essay was well thought out and matched up with the guidelines on the ETS website. So kudos on the verbal -- the actual test held no surprises on that front, with the level of question difficulty about equal to that of Barron's.
Now on to the math, which is a bit of a mixed bag. On the positive side, the math review is excellent, takes a while to get through, and has some pretty good exercises that get the brain cells firing. In fact, there were a couple of questions on the actual exam that contained "traps" that I was able to recognize quickly due to having seen them in Barron's earlier. However, the test experience on the Q section was very different from Barron's; the time constraints were intense, after the first few questions the level of difficulty increased substantially past anything I've seen in the book, and didn't let up until the very end. I think this may also be why reviewers tend to disagree about whether or not the actual test is more difficult than the material contained in the book. This is probably due to the way the CAT works; it'll give you questions tailored to your level of knowledge. Thus, it's possible that some reviewers had questions that were easier than the book, and some whose questions were more difficult. Having said that, my GRE score were higher on the actual exam than on any of the practice tests from Barron's..
Impressively, the book appears to be almost completely error free. My copy had some typesetting issues with a couple of Quantitative Comparison questions on the sample tests (one or both of the values were missing), but that wasn't overly bothersome. Unfortunately, the Barron's CD is essentially worthless -- it repeats questions from the paper exams, and the actual test experience has a much different feel. Make sure to download the PowerPrep software from the ETS website, but be careful -- if you are taking a PowerPrep practice test at night and your computer's clock rolls over to 12:00am, the software will inform you that you have just ran out of time and kick you out of your current section.
Anyway, that's my take -- hope someone finds this useful..
Barrons is what you need.......2007-09-25
First off let me say I am not good in math and I had not heard ALOT of these words prior to ordering this book. After taking the exam Barrons certainly helped alot because all the words I ever encountered on any practice test were in this book. I used this book, GRE Bible, Powerpre, and the Ultimate Math Refresher. This book teaches you the mechanics of the GRE and offers an abundance of words. I went through the most frequent word list, made flash cards of those words, and made flash cards of any word I encountered on any other practice exam. Instead of reading barrons all night long I just took practice test after practice test which allowed me to get in the flow of taking the exam. The reading comprehension was a bit dense at first but after reading several passages I get use to it. The key is to take multiple tests. GRE bible has 15 tests. Keep taking tests and using this book.
BEWARE. POWERPREP is the only software that gives scores close to the actual GRE exam. GRE Bible is WAYYYYY harder than the actual exam.
Too much great info!.......2007-09-03
I bought this book after reading all the reviews on Amazon. And yes, the 3000 word list is a bit daunting, but I focused my attention on the ones that they hi-lighted as being the high-frequency words to appear on the GRE. That helped ease the anxiety of having to learn 3000 vocab words. I loved that Barron's provided example sentences following their definitions b/c it helped jog my memory as I was studying. Compared to Kaplan, I also loved Barron's approach to the analytical writing portion...it's very straightforward and helpful in the way they instruct you to formulate your essays. I scored pretty high marks on that portion and I primarily used the tips provided by Barron's. As for the math portion, well, I'm entering a social science field, so I just glazed over that part. Overall, I would recommend coupling this purchase with the Princeton GRE prep b/c both offer unique techniques to tackling the GRE.

The GED for Dummies.......2007-10-09
I am mentoring a 23 year old woman. She was educated through the 8TH Grade and she is trying to get her GED so that she can get a better job. We are presently in the Pre-GED book. She was so impressed by this book, she has already purchased a copy for herself.

I'm sure to buy this book today. I have the "Weather for Dummies" book, and if that is any indication, you simply can not go wrong with this book. The "Dummies" books are always filled with in depth information. I couldn't believe the amount of information the books hold. This book is definately a safe bet.
Book Description
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is now being offered as an internet-based test, or iBT, and the new edition of Barron's TOEFL manual and accompanying software have been completely revised and updated to reflect the new format. The manual presents seven full-length model TOEFL iBT tests with explanations or examples for all questions, including sample essays and speaking responses. The author also offers general orientation to the new TOEFL iBT, as well as a review of academic skills, which include note taking, paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing. There is also a review of language skillslistening, speaking, reading, and writing. The optional CD-ROM presents seven on-screen TOEFL iBT exams that simulate actual test conditions and provide automatic scoring.
Customer Reviews:
Good Audio CD Package.......2007-07-30
It has been more than enough to me. If you want to use the book "TOEFL iBT - Internet Based Test 2006-2007", you have to purchase that Audio CD Package, because most of the book exercises require the CD package. Furthermore, that CD package also comes with model tests. You do not need to buy the book with CD-ROM, but only the book.
Somewhat useful.......2007-03-26
The book does not come with a DVD and instead uses a CD. Unfortunately I made the mistake of not reading the product description and bought the book. It is useful but it could have been better had it made use of the available technology (DVD). Still, it is a worthwhile product.
How to Prepare for the TOEFL iBT with Audio CDs (Barron's How to Prepare for the TOEFL Ibt (W/CD Audio)).......2007-03-09
This book fosters individual learners' ability to overcome/be aware of the challenges in iBT TOEFL. It is also a very good resource for ESL practitioners for enhancing their students' academic skills, i.e. note-taking, paraphrasing, etc. as well as target language skills, i.e. listening, reading, etc.
Contents are pretty good staffs........2007-01-20
I like Barron's book to practice iBT TOEFL test.
The Listening section's explanation is wrong, but it does not matter 'cause contents are really, really good.
It contains following;
1) selected possible iBT TOEFL reading topics
2) quite similar to Listening material
3) useful words for Writing
I do not mention about speaking because it needs partner who listens response.
I am satisfied with this contens, but I have one thing that I cannot accept... that is, CD-Rom materials are all the same as materials in the book. If only it had not been the same as book's contens... I'd rate 5stars.
Anyway, this will improve your scores.
CD rom is the excellent simulation of the ibt test.......2007-01-04
the cd-rom is the excellent simulation for the real ibt test. When i entered the real ibt test i didnt have any problem understanding the system of the test. also the exercises and questions are helpful and similar with the real ibt test. the only negative thing about the cd rom is your scores arent saved when you turn your computer off so you have to write them down somewhere else. note: to solve the exercises dont forget to buy the audio CD's sold seperately otherwise you wont be able to solve them.

Great Reference Guide .......2007-09-10
This book really helped me to prepare for the gmat. The cd was somewhat useful. The prep test were similar to that of the real gmat, however the explanations for the answers were not that clear.
Poorly Written and Edited.......2007-08-08
After using numerous other GMAT preparation tools from Kaplan, GMAC, and elsewhere, the quality of this product is below subpar. Numerous typographical and logical errors are present in the text, including:
-Questions on reading comprehension sections that were not printed (page 18)
-Duplicate answer choices for a question (page 71)
-An apparenty inability to number questions from 1 to 41 (page 45)
Given the lack of attention to detail along with a number of questionable justifications for answers, I would not recommend this book to anybody. Go with Kaplan, Kaplan800, or Princeton Review instead.
Error-ridden and buggy.......2007-05-06
My husband has been out of school for over 25 years, when he decided he wanted to take a Masters degree, so we needed a really good test prep product. The book is just fine at explaining concepts and ideas, and providing test strategies. But the CD is deeply disappointing. The questions are full of errors, many of them simply a matter of poor proofreading (in one, the greater-than sign is reversed into a less-than sign, making the entire question unsolvable). My husband was two questions away from the end of one of the practice tests on the CD when it froze up. Am I too picky in thinking a test-prep product should have ZERO errors, and software that works consistently? I don't think so!
An O.K. Prep Guide.......2007-03-18
This book is not the best, but too bad either. I ended up NOT using the CD because I didn't want to take the chance of having it screwing up my computer. Now, I am not saying that the CD is defective because I don't know. I am just saying that I was a bit paranoid :) I really should've just bought the edition without the CD. The writing style of the book is good. My beef is mostly with the math review section and some of the testing hints. It has about 90-95% of the GMAT math topics. A few topics are mentioned for the first time in the answer section for the sample tests at the back of the book. There are also some typos in the percentage/fraction conversion tables in the math review section. My biggest beef is that the author forgot to update the testing techniques because he said to "work on famalier topics first" for the verbal section. Hmmm, this advice would've worked on paper-based GMAT, but NOT on the CAT version. The strategy for data sufficiency and the logic behind reading comprehension and critical reasoning are extremely helpful though. Contrary to what some people said about the previous edition of the book, I don't think there is any wrong answer for the questions IN the book (again, I don't know anything about the questions on the CD). Finally, the grammar review section is good and bad at the same time. It is helpful to know the correct grammar for general purpose, but the topics covered in the book are sort of "off" as far as GMAT questions are concerned.
Explantions and buggy software a problem.......2007-03-03
The book was decent with many practice problems, but the explanations were sometimes too complicated and not structured enough for you to truly understand it. The CD is buggy, occasionally it stop and all the answer are lost, which is a major pain. Also, the answers are not saved, so you cannot go back to the ones you got wrong later on. I do have not used any other books, so i am not sure how it compares.

wonderful prep for the test!!.......2007-04-15
This book contained a lot of valuable information that really prepared me for the test. It informed me of how to manage my time during the exam, and the strategies and practice tests showed me what to expect. The examples in this book are very similar to the questions on the test. I recommend this book to anyone who is going to take the RICA.

A "Must Have" for Acceleration Decisions.......2005-08-29
The Iowa Acceleration Scale (IAS) is a "must have" tool in the process for determining the appropriateness of whole-grade acceleration. What I like most about the IAS is that it is research based and patently objective. The IAS also requires a team approach which only serves to add confidence to whatever decision is ultimately arrived upon. Further, each child is assessed wholistically with individual items weighted based on relevance.
The IAS also provides alternate suggestions for serving the academically advanced child in the event that whole-grade acceleration is not recommended.
The manual is a very easy read and the entire process is user friendly. The IAS Manual removes the mystery and uncertainty from what would typically be a rather difficult task - deciding whether or not to whole-grade accelerate a child in school.
I highly recommend the IAS for any and all parents and educators who find themselves faced with the incredible task of trying to decide how best to meet the educational needs of a bright or gifted child. To borrow (and twist) a line from Shakespeare: If to accelerate or not to accelerate is the question - then the IAS is the answer.
A Note of caution to parents and IAS team members: The IAS process should be open and transparent. All team members should have the opportunity to read and review the manual prior to and during the process. Therefore, be sure the "team leader" does not monopolize the process or attempt to create their own procedure for completion of the IAS. The manual very clearly states the proper procedures to follow to ensure the process flows smoothly - and objectively.
Wonderful resource!.......2004-04-03
I refer to this book often when working with families and educators that are considering whole-grade acceleration for a gifted student. This is an invaluable tool that appears to be very user-friendly.

premier SAT study guide.......2007-06-19
What is there to say? Barron's provides simply the best preparation manual for the SAT. It not only familiarizes one with the test, but it is also packed with tips on how to get through some questions faster and how to "beat" some tricky questions.
The CD-ROM, which replicates taking the test online, is a godsend. However, save taking the CD-ROM tests until after you've read through the book in order to give yourself a more accurate idea of how you'll do on the test and where you have to really concentrate your efforts.
It's Good Stuff.......2006-11-03
In my personal opinion, I thought this book was great! It provides various tips on ways to improve your scores, along with practice exercises for each section. All Mathematics and English concpets are thoroughly visited with both review and practice. Even with the new Writing section, there are tips on writing the essay along with sample essays and practice topics. The best part? If you don't feel comfortable doing it on paper, you can simply do it on the computer! The Cd-ROM includes all the excersizes and tips. It's a great way to practice and improve your scores!
Ok book, but better books are readily available.......2006-07-16
The following is an abridged review of one found on CEEAE dot org:
Although most of the glaring errors found in the previous edition (Barron's How to Prepare for the New SAT) have been rectified, this book is only marginally recommendable.
Anyone well versed in SAT preparation will first note that practice tests in this book are not very SAT-like. The SAT features some very convoluted questions. While the material tested on the SAT is not that difficult, the questions are difficult due to their convoluted phrasing. Hence, to provide accurate test questions, the practice tests must feature questions that are similarly convoluted. Barron's book, however, features questions that test the same material as the SAT, but the questions themselves are not very SAT-like.
The other major point is that this book is written like in a textbook or reference book. Some may prefer this presentation, but most students will prefer the more approachable format found in Princeton Review, Kaplan, or Up Your Score (there are others but we decided to only name a few). The books mentioned in the previous sentence are formatted like a conversation between student and tutor, rather than blocks of text-based material. If you prefer the textbook-like presentation of material, we recommend McGraw-Hill's SAT I over Barron's.
On the positive side, Barron's book has an excellent and comprehensive review of all relevant material for the SAT, and a plethora of reinforcement problems. Also, this book comes with detachable vocabulary flashcards at the end of the book.
Note: This book as well as more than 20 other SAT prep books are reviewed and ranked on CEEAE dot org Every book review has a direct link to its page on Amazon, so you can read the reviews, view the rankings and then return to Amazon to purchase your selections.

Questionable product.......2007-06-14
The biology goes into a lot of details -- which is great -- but also not-so-great if you are trying to learn. It is like they expect you to know your stuff before you start reviewing. Hence, it could work on a better presentation.
