Book Description

This photo of Escherichia coli being attacked by bacteriophages highlights rapidly developing technologies for using phages to treat antibiotic resistant infections without destroying normal resident bacteria, and without side effects. Phages are also being used to detect and remove pathogens from our food supplies, both plant and animal. Also exciting is the use of phages as vehicles to delivery DNA vaccines, often directly to mammalian immune system cells. Recent work also suggests possible antitumor effects of phages. We stand on the edge of a whole new world of exploration and applications of microbiology.

For over 20 years, and through five editions, Black's Microbiology: Principles and Explorations has captured students' imaginations. Her enthusiasm, passion, and knack for memorable stories and anecdotes bring the study of microbiology to life in a way few other texts can match.

Now updated to reflect the latest topics in the field (e.g., SARS, bioterrorism, GMO's, geomicrobiology) and accompanied by state-of-the-art animations of key concepts, this new edition is sure to help inspire a new generation of enthusiasts for the dynamic science of microbiology.

Critical Acclaim
"I continue to find Black's text an excellent contribution to undergraduate Microbiology education." --Karen Messley, Rock Valley College

"I like the conversational and informal style Black adopts throughout the book. This is a book, which could very well engage even the most reluctant student. It is comprehensive, nicely detailed, and incorporates many aids to teaching and learning..."--Iris Cook, Westchester CC

"[The text] is a wonderful introduction into the world of microorganisms for students from a wide variety of backgrounds."--Jeff G. Leid, Northern Arizona University

3 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2006-02-19

It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).

3 out of 5 stars Lots of typos and missing info........2006-01-07

Good study guide when the answers were in the back. Sometimes the answers were off by one or non existent. If you can get past that, it does help, but jeez don't they employ a proofreader? For thirty bucks, I was kind of disappointed. The textbook is great.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Informative Book!!!.......2005-12-12

WOW! I love this book. Every time I read part of it I learn so much stuff that I never knew before. It is fairly advanced information but it is written in a very understandable way. I am in high school and I like it because it teaches in the same format as my school's biology text books. I use this book because I like to read about this stuff. It is so facinating. If you are in a high school biology class, read this and you will be light years ahead of every one else!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for teachers and students.......2005-09-17

This text explains some very complex information in a very reader-friendly way. The photos, charts and practical examples of how microbiology impacts everyone's life make it very readable. I would recommend it for teachers and students!

5 out of 5 stars Micro Made Easy.......2005-09-14

This is one of the best text books I have ever used. The information is clear, concise, and interesting. It gives examples throughout the book of how microbiology is being used now to help us.

Book Description

Bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver returns with her first nonfiction narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat.

"As the U.S. population made an unprecedented mad dash for the Sun Belt, one carload of us paddled against the tide, heading for the Promised Land where water falls from the sky and green stuff grows all around. We were about to begin the adventure of realigning our lives with our food chain.

"Naturally, our first stop was to buy junk food and fossil fuel. . . ."

Hang on for the ride: With characteristic poetry and pluck, Barbara Kingsolver and her family sweep readers along on their journey away from the industrial-food pipeline to a rural life in which they vow to buy only food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Their good-humored search yields surprising discoveries about turkey sex life and overly zealous zucchini plants, en route to a food culture that's better for the neighborhood and also better on the table. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.

"This is the story of a year in which we made every attempt to feed ourselves animals and vegetables whose provenance we really knew . . . and of how our family was changed by our first year of deliberately eating food produced from the same place where we worked, went to school, loved our neighbors, drank the water, and breathed the air."

5 out of 5 stars Can I please live with the Kingsolver Family?.......2007-10-09

Barbara Kingsolver is my hero. Her life on the farm sounds perfect, and I want her to open a B&B so I can experience her cooking, gardening, and philosophy of life. And while I don't have enough land or expertise to sustain myself and my family -- I do appreciate the information in this book and have used what I can to eat more local foods. The recipes, links, and resources make the book worthwhile. But the book is also an entertaining read. I read it slowly to savor the deep commitment that Barbara and her family put into even the most simple eating pleasures. Thank you for this book, Barbara. It is a treasure. Eleanor Taylor, co-author of Feeding the Kids: The Flexbile, No-Battles, Healthy Eating System for the Whole Family. Feeding the Kids: The Flexible, No-Battles, Healthy Eating System for the Whole Family (Fork and Spoon Field Guides)

4 out of 5 stars Thinking about your food.......2007-10-05

Ms Kingsolver writes smoothly and with passion about organic farming. Sidebars from her college age daughter cover practical personal concerns, complete with recipes to enjoy the seasonal bounty of the land; while ones from her husband give the political overview of how farming policies affect us all on a world level. All in my book group enjoyed the book as a whole. It was obviously edited tightly to be easy and fast to read while still introducing ideas that would be unusual to most people in North America. As one with a extensive backyard fruit and vegetable garden in California, I would have enjoyed more detailed planning information on how she decided what and how much to plant, why she did not try to raise more and different animals for food, (e.g., rabbits, sheep, or even guinea pigs)and what she could have done with a greenhouse and solar or wind power.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Read.......2007-10-04

I think this is an important book about our society, economy and values. While it can be a bit preachy at times, Barbara's humor is wonderfully dry. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and fun to read! .......2007-10-01

I loved the book, it was informative and entertaining. Everyone can benefit from reading it and trying to follow Barbara's lead.

5 out of 5 stars Lifechanging book.......2007-10-01

I heard an interview on NPR with the author and purchased this book because her ideas were very interesting to me. I was not disappointed. This book was riveting and eye opening. I've been checking out the websites suggested in the book to find local harvest information and I intend to frequent my local farmers and farmers markets during next years growing season and maybe even try my hand at canning. I'm hooked. Thank you so much for this wonderful informative book.

Book Description

In her own words, here is the captivating story of Julia Child’s years in France, where she fell in love with French food and found ‘her true calling.’

From the moment the ship docked in Le Havre in the fall of 1948 and Julia watched the well-muscled stevedores unloading the cargo to the first perfectly soigné meal that she and her husband, Paul, savored in Rouen en route to Paris, where he was to work for the USIS, Julia had an awakening that changed her life. Soon this tall, outspoken gal from Pasadena, California, who didn’t speak a word of French and knew nothing about the country, was steeped in the language, chatting with purveyors in the local markets, and enrolled in the Cordon Bleu.

After managing to get her degree despite the machinations of the disagreeable directrice of the school, Julia started teaching cooking classes herself, then teamed up with two fellow gourmettes, Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, to help them with a book they were trying to write on French cooking for Americans. Throwing herself heart and soul into making it a unique and thorough teaching book, only to suffer several rounds of painful rejection, is part of the behind-the-scenes drama that Julia reveals with her inimitable gusto and disarming honesty.

Filled with the beautiful black-and-white photographs that Paul loved to take when he was not battling bureaucrats, as well as family snapshots, this memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Julia embraced so wholeheartedly. Above all, she reveals the kind of spirit and determination, the sheer love of cooking, and the drive to share that with her fellow Americans that made her the extraordinary success she became.

Le voici. Et bon appétit!

Julia Child was born in Pasadena, California. She was graduated from Smith College and worked for the OSS during World War II in Ceylon and China, where she met Paul Child. After they married they lived in Paris, where she studied at the Cordon Bleu and taught cooking with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, with whom she wrote the first volume of Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961). In 1963, Boston’s WGBH launched The French Chef television series, which made her a national celebrity, earning her the Peabody Award in 1965 and an Emmy in 1966. Several public television shows and numerous cookbooks followed. She died in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Missing Julia.......2007-08-05

I just finished this book, and I am unashamed to say I have shed tears for the loss of this great woman. I am discovering the art of cooking later in life, as Julia did, and she has helped give me the courage I am needing to change careers and attend culinary arts training this spring. What a marvelous book, I felt that I was there with her in her "la belle France" and wish that I could have had the opportunity to spend time in the kitchen with her. You will not be disappointed in this fantastic read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-07-27

This book was so enjoyable to read! I was fascinated by this look into post-war France, and into Julia's world there. It made me wish I would have know her and understand why it seems that everyone who knew her, loved her.

One thing I thought was fun was her encyclopedic recall of various meals they enjoyed, including the wine vintage.

You'll also love hearing how she came to write her first cookbook and become a host of her own show on PBS. For those of us who are over 40, it's also great to note that the most interesting parts of her life didn't even begin until then.

5 out of 5 stars French Food as Accessible Art Form Thanks to Julia.......2007-07-20

My Life in France gives the reader a glimpse into the extraordinary and elegant life of Julia Child. The memoir adds another dimension to Julia the TV persona and looks beyond the lighthearted image. Indeed, beyond Julia's fun spirit was an unbelievable level of meticulous research and above all, fearlessness and stamina. My Life in France is a delight to read for anyone who wishes to understand the origin of Julia's passion for French cooking and her ability to transform one's vision of and taste for fine food. My Life in France

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for any foodie.......2007-07-15

This has risen to the top of my favorite books list. It's so well written, with plenty of imagery and descriptive language that I felt I was in Julia's kitchen with her. I learned quite a bit about her relationship with her husband and both their careers. The best was reading about how the recipes and the books were written.

If you are planning to write a cook book or are very interested in cooking and chefs, you should definitely buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars It's a Wonderful Life in France!.......2007-07-04

'My Life in France' is a superb book that effuses with that wonderful endearing quality we have all come to know and love in Julia Child. The book focuses mainly on the early years of developing her first cookbooks and television show.

The book begins when she and her husband, Paul, make their first trip to France because of his new job assignment. You feel her giddy excitement upon landing on the shores of a place she had for so long desired to go. We hear in minute detail the look, smell and taste of her first French meal, and from there we are introduced to "La Belle France". Before I began the book, I wondered for how long I could sustain reading each night about a person's breakfast, lunch and dinner meals that were eaten 50 years prior, but Julia has such an adorable way of speaking, and her sometimes child-like observations of life and people around her are so heartwarming, you just wish you had been there. As the book progresses, she speaks about her collaboration with two women for her first book, and sometimes the claws come out. You're thinking, "Julia!" But, as with all friendships, there are things that agree with us and things that don't. Without some of these tidbits, the book may have been too trite, or frankly boring. Subsequently, it was interesting to hear of the minor squabbles that occurred between the women and the simple controversies concerning her husband and his role as a "diplomat". Paul and Julia Child made many friends overseas, whom they adored and loved. The majority of these people stayed in her inner circle until the end of their lives. For me, night after night, I couldn't wait to sit down and read about so many dinner parties with simmering meats and side dishes, lovely conversations, and eccentric friends. The only thing I didn't like about the book is that it ended too quickly, and I found myself missing the evenings with Julia.

Book Description

This book covers the regulatory process for getting pharmaceuticals, biologics, and medical devices approved. It examines the pertinent aspects of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as it applies to human drug and device development, research, manufacturing, and marketing. Topics include: the drug approval process, Current Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Clinical Practices, Quality System Compliance and the corresponding documentation requirements, and FDA inspection processes and enforcement options. Although many references exist on this subject, this one is written in a general prose style that makes it useful to both students and professionals.

Best Available Book for Regulatory Affiars, November 22, 2006
Reviewer: H. Burgoyne (Watertown, MA United States) - See all my reviews

I am currently completing a Masters in Regulatory Affairs and throughout all of my classes, this has been the best source (other than the FDA website, which is most current) pertaining to US reg. affairs. Forget any Parexel books...this one actually has an index, making it easy to find the information you need. Not sure about medical devices, as I do not specialize in them, but for pharmaceuticals and biologics this book is pretty comprehensive. You are not going to get a more "layman's level" interpretation of regulations than this book. Regulations are part of the law, which is never easy to "translate". It is hard to incorporate regulations into a book , as they are constantly being updated, but this book does a pretty good job. I have used the book to develop presentations, study for exams and write papers. If you are interested in US Regulatory Affairs, this book is definitely worth the investment. The price seems high, but is comparable to other books with the same subject matter.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't adequately cover medical device regulation.......2006-08-31

Mostly this book covers (perhaps adequately) FDA regulation of the development and approval process of new drugs. These new drugs are (by and large) developed by huge drug companies who doubtless employ teams of lawyers in connection with their FDA submissions and regulatory compliance, and it is quite likely that nearly all involved in that process with such companies would find this to be a "lite" description of FDA drug regulations, and will have little use for this book. (Imagine a beer having only 10 calories, not the 90 or so found in Miller Lite.)

Many medical devices, on the other hand, are developed by small companies (such as my employer) and a "layman's level" description (as opposed to a legal treatise) of FDA medical device regulation would be very useful. Since "medical device" is in the title, I figured when buying this book that there would be coverage relating to all FDA regulations pertaining to medical devices. Its why I (or thankfully, my company) bought the book.

Ther coverage of medical devices is grossly inadequate. Only a small portion of the book treats (again "litely") FDA medical device regulation, and then it largely covers only the premarket approval process for medical devices and barely mentions (or doesn't even mention--I forget) FDA regulation of the manner in which medical devices may be distributed in the US.

Given the relatively high cost of this book, I expected more and was quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for any Botanical Art Enthusiast or Artist.......2002-11-26

This book, illustrated by Marilena Pistoia, is an invaluable addition to the library of botanical artists or lovers of botanical art. There are 110 paintings depicting 400 plants, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices...all beautifully painted and reproduced. Some of the fruits are so realistic they almost make your mouth water.

The composition and combinations of the fruits and vegetables used in the individual paintings is very imaginative and complimentary in shape, form and colors.

I bought it for the illustrations but the text is very interesting and informative as well, often giving little know facts about the edible plants in our world. It is not a science book...the entertaining text is the perfect compliment to the beauty of the highly accurate and colorful representations of the paintings.

Product Description

In search of the perfect human diet, Victoria Boutenko compares the standard American diet with the diet of wild chimpanzees. Chimpanzees share an estimated 99.4% of genes with humans, but their diet is dramatically different from ours. The most glaring difference is that chimpanzees consume significantly more green leaves than humans. Victoria developed a series of greens smoothies that enable anyone to consume the necessary amount of greens in a very palatable way.

5 out of 5 stars Green for Life.......2007-09-26

I enjoyed this book very much and as much as I enjoy green vegtables there is no way I could eat as many as I need, also I can't chew them that well so this book has given me a way to do it and it is wonderful. I own a Vita Mix and it makes great green smoothies and drinking is much easier than chewing although I still eat salads, I am very grateful for what I am learning, I can't say I am use to drinking them yet but they aren't bad at all and I am getting use to all of this. I thank Victoria Boutenko for all of her work and for her book, it is changing the way I eat.

4 out of 5 stars I love green juice!.......2007-09-24

Wonderful book!

I am not a raw foodist. I love the concept of the lifestyle, but have only been able to do it in small bursts. I can last for about 3 weeks before I'm dying for pizza and cheeseburgers!

I juice every single morning and this book has wonderful juices and smoothies. I especially love the mint, kale, pear smoothie! AMAZING!

I recommend this book even if you aren't a vegetarian/vegan/raw foodist.

5 out of 5 stars User-Friendly and Inspirational!!!.......2007-09-20

Victoria has written one of the most user-friendly nutritional books I have ever read. She takes what very well could be a sweaty subject for most readers, and presents the information concisely, anecdotally, invigoratingly, and with pizazz!

This book details the benefits of transitioning to a raw foods lifestyle. I do not say 'diet' because this is not a diet at all, it is actually a way of life. A mind-blowing, body-transforming, attitude-improving, way of life. Sure, some people will employ the raw foods techniques to enhance their diet, but if you truly want to feel the 'epiphany' (and yes, you will have one if you stick to it), you must commit to living 'green' as fully as you can.

In her book, Victoria starts off with an inspirational message. She challenges everyone to seek their own personal truths, and to never accept what is read for fact until one has personally experienced it. She then goes on to discuss her personal journey and her family's journey into the raw food lifestyle - their pitfalls, their triumphs, and ultimately how it changed their lives for the better.

Victoria provides information on 'green smoothies' and how they have a profound impact on one's health. She also talks about nutritional aspects of traditional SAD (Standard American Diet) versus the Raw Food lifestyle.

Without getting too fussy or overly-technical, she emphasizes the need for fiber, protein, chlorophyll, and also introduces something I never considered - the pH of your stomach juices (aka acidity/alkalinity level), how to measure them, and how they play a key role in whether you 'sink' or 'swim' through life.

She ends her book with Testimonials from a test group who participated in a test study that she herself funded along with friends.

This book was a quick read (took me 4 hours cover-to-cover), easy to understand, realistic in its testimonials, personable, and anecdotal. The Green Smoothie recipes provided were simple and yummy!

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is even minutely curious about the raw food lifestyle, specifically green smoothies, and living more green. It is understood that not everyone can live 100% raw, but Victoria encourages us to do our best and that even small steps will improve your health.

5 out of 5 stars I AGREE W/DONNETTE.......2007-09-11

YES, THIS IS BEST FOR THOSE ALREADY RAW EATERS. HOWEVER, ANYONE CAN GET EXCELLENT INFORMATION FROM THIS BOOK. OF ALL THE RAW BOOKS I'VE READ, PROBABLY ABOUT 100, THIS ONE COMES SECOND ONLY TO 'NATURE'S FIRST LAW'.
VICTORIA'S RESEARCH IS VERY GOOD AND HER EXPLANATIONS ARE ASTOUNDING. SO MUCH INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK!!!! AND THE SMOOTHIES ARE TERRIFIC!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but best for those already eating raw.......2007-09-11

This is a lovely book. It is heartening to hear how the Boutenkos cured themselves of terrible diseases with raw foods. I think it provides a great service to those on raw foods in that it reminds us of how important it is to balance the kinds of raw foods we eat. I was apprehensive about some of the recipes for the smoothies because I thought they wouldn't taste that good, but the ones I have tried have turned out to be very tasty indeed. For those who want to learn how to go raw I would recommend Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine by Cousens and LifeFood Recipe Book by Jubb & Jubb.

Miracle cure stories abound when it comes to natural healing. A super nutrient reverses cancer after chemotherapy has failed. A Chinese herb lowers high blood pressure in a patient with heart disease after being dismissed as quackery by doctors. Jordan S. Rubin's account of returning from the medical abyss, however, includes an original twist. After several years of battling Crohn's Disease, which included a small fortune spent on both conventional and alternative treatments, as well as trips abroad in search of help, Rubin weighed only 111 pounds and, at just age 21, thought his life was over. At the urging of his father, a naturopath, he contacted an obscure nutritionist in California promoting a diet based on the teachings of the Bible. Yes, we're talking what Jesus ate: kefir, lamb, sprouted breads, eggs and meat from free-range chickens, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Rubin also started to pray and added a new powder supplement containing homeostatic soil organisms (HSOs) to his diet. Four months later he weighed 170 lbs and was on the road back to his former athletic and healthy self. Inspired by his experience, and now with advanced degrees in nutrition and naturopathic medicine, Rubin has crafted The Maker's Diet. While the faithful will surely find the book of interest, Rubin's command of the scientific issues underpinning his recommendations may also appeal to those more accustomed to studying food labels in search of what to eat than ancient religious texts. --Patrick Jennings

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good read for IBD.......2007-09-02

I certainly don't ascribe to every single detail of this book, or Mr. Rubin's beliefs (although, there are many that I do) but this is a definite read if you have IBD, IBS, or any other GI problems. Since I have Crohn's, I can speak from experience. I am using his philosophy, in conjunction with the SCD and have had good results. I believe using diet as a means for therapy is great, but it won't deliver results overnight. You have to be willing to give it a chance.
To most of you who gave 1* or 2*'s, I offer you 4 remarks. You either a) have never suffered from a disease yourself, b) you aren't a Christian (or you just can't stand the thought that the Bible MAY have something to offer!), c) you didn't even bother to read the book, or d) you didn't follow the diet. Don't be so blatantly obvious! Oh, and reality check, don't take life so literally....think outside the box!
I have had IBD for almost 8 years. If you think that doesn't qualify as someone who has some knowledge of the GI system, you are wrong. It doesn't always take a MD or some "righteous" degree/credentials to write a book and share knowledge. In fact, all my MD's want to do is shove pills down my throat or open me up with a scalpel.
4 stars for this book. Just another way to avoid taking so many drugs. I do wish, however, that Mr. Rubin offered more for less. As in less money. You have to pay to be a member on his website (not gonna happen!) But, in the same breath, I've paid enormous amounts of money in pharmaceuticals and doctor's visits. I don't mind buying a book or two if it might offer even an ounce of help! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Mr. Rubin!

2 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2007-08-09

The problem with this book is it assumes everyone has the same problems as the author. I gained weight because of all the dairy fat and wound up with gall bladder problems. Mercola's book is better since it addresses people like myself who are a carbohydrate type.

5 out of 5 stars Read this to get a perspective on diet options.......2007-07-25

I was given a copy of this book while shopping at a health store. There are some great nuggets of information in here. I am not even going to go into the religious talk on this. Get what practical information that you can from this book. There are great ideas that the average person can learn from, while searching for a better, healthier way of living. This is a good starting point.

1 out of 5 stars gibberish.......2007-07-17

according to a reputable scientific site:
"Garden of Life, Inc., of West Palm Beach, Florida, and its founder and owner, Jordan S. Rubin, have been ordered to stop claiming that their dietary supplements are effective against a long list of ailments, ranging from colds to cancer. In 2004, the FDA ordered Garden of Life to stop making unsubstantiated claims for "Q-Zyme,""Primal Defense," "Virgin Coconut Oil," "Fungal Defense," "FYI (For Your Inflammation)," "RM-10," "Revivall Classic," or other products [1] In 2006, the FTC filed a complaint and consent agreement involving unsubstantiated claims that:
Primal Defense treats intractable immune disorders, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, lupus, colds, flu, and Crohn's disease, and reduces users' blood cholesterol levels;
RM-10 treats cancer, helps lower users' blood cholesterol levels, prevents and treats cardiovascular disease, and treats immune system disorders;
Living Multi reduces the risk factor for diabetes and prevents diabetes-related syndromes, reduces the risk of obesity, and reduces inflammation; and
FYI (For Your Inflammation) treats and prevents inflammation, including inflammation caused by arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, sports injuries, asthma, allergies, fibromyalgia, lupus, scleroderma, and other inflammatory conditions.

Under the settlement, Rubin and the company:
Must pay $225,000 in consumer redress. If it is found they misrepresented their financial status, they will be responsible for more than $47 million--the total gross sales of the four dietary supplements.
Are barred from making unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits, performance, efficacy, safety, or side effects of any food, drug, or dietary supplement, or any program that includes such a product.
Are prohibited from misrepresenting the results of any test or study when marketing such products and programs [2]"

3 out of 5 stars Hallelujah Diet & Lifestyle Rip Off.......2007-07-15

I will begin by saying that if you are currently eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) this book has information that will help you TRANSITION to a much healthier way of eating and living. However, if you are seriously ill and need healing quickly, you would be better off with George Malkmus' 'The Hallelujah Diet'. Brother George wrote his predecessor books to that one long before Rubin came out with this book, which appears to steal much of Malkmus' material. The big problem is that Rubin throws expensive organic, free range meat and dairy into the mix. If you read Rubin's first book about his healing, you will find that it didn't include fiberless, acid ash forming meat and mucus laden/forming dairy. These foods have been shown conclusively to contribute to disease by 'The China Study' and many other highly reliable sources. But, having them in this diet makes it much more palatable to people on SAD, hence it's current popularity. I also have an issue with Rubin's high priced supplements which he requires as part of his regimen. While Malkmus has a reasonably priced line of supplements available for the Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle, they are not 'required' for maximum benefit from his regimen.
Biblical Scripture does include this 'Noahic' diet, however I believe the Maker's Diet would be more correctly described by Genesis 1:29, which Rubin does quote, and which describes YHVH's Original Diet in the Garden, as well as the Hallelujah Diet. It just makes logical sense that this would be the ideal as it was given in the ideal state of man, created specifically for his body's needs. Noah appears to have been given permission to eat meat based upon need, as most vegetation had been destroyed in the flood. Just because we have permission does not indicate that it is YHVH's ideal for us.
I am a Certified Health Minister with a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering and a work background as a Certified Environmental Trainer specializing in Health & Safety and Hazardous Materials who has studied several of Rubin's books carefully and find them seriously lacking in comparison to the much more effective and practical Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle materials.

Book Description

From the PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author James Salter and his wife, Kay—amateur chefs and perfect hosts—here is a charming, beautifully illustrated tour de table: a food lover's companion that, with an entry for each day of the year, takes us from a Twelfth Night cake in January to a champagne dinner on New Year's Eve. Life Is Meals is rich with culinary wisdom, history, recipes, literary pleasures, and the authors' own memories of successes and catastrophes.

For instance:

• The menu on the Titanic on the fatal night

• Reflections on dining from Queen Victoria, JFK, Winnie-the-Pooh, Garrison Keillor, and many others

• The seductiveness of a velvety Brie or the perfect martini

• How to decide whom to invite to a dinner party—and whom not to

• John Irving's family recipe for meatballs; Balzac's love of coffee

• The greatest dinner ever given at the White House

• Where in Paris Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter had French onion soup at 4:00 a.m.

• How to cope with acts of God and man-made disasters in the kitchen

Sophisticated as well as practical, opinionated, and indispensable, Life Is Meals is a tribute to the glory of food and drink, and the joy of sharing them with others. "The meal is the emblem of civilization," the Salters observe. "What would one know of life as it should be lived, or nights as they should be spent, apart from meals?"

4 out of 5 stars Charming.......2007-05-11

I love reading cookbooks and cooking magazines so this book was a bit of a change of pace. But I enjoyed it immensely. I read it on vacation and shared with my husband some of the tidbits of history in the book. It is easy to read in short spurts. It has a little bit of everything. Recipes, history, anecdotes, menus. The writers did a very nice job.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Reading.......2007-04-19

This uniquely unclassifiable book is an utter delight. More than a cookbook, more than advice on how to entertain, more than a history of food and its preparation, it is both a memoir and veritable instruction manual about how to dine and live with style and gusto. Simultaneously worldly and sophisticated, casual and candid, every page offers a new treat. The illustrations are charming and perfectly complement the tone of the book. You'll want an extra copy to give to special friends.

2 out of 5 stars Too rich!.......2007-03-27

Although I did finish this book, and I found some of the ideas and information very interesting, I doubt this is a book I would ever thoroughly revisit. Some of the anecdotes, while obviously meant to be charming, disarming, and heartwarming, had the opposite effect, and made the authors seem pretentious. This did not feel like a collection of casual observations about food written by people who love it. Rather, it felt more like an affected assortment of entries written by finicky epicures. As an aside, I found the passages that he wrote much more enjoyable than hers. Unfortunately, she seems to have written the majority of the book.
Of course, this is only my opinion, but these authors have a very strong voice, and if you don't enjoy it, it will be a constant irritation throughout the book. I would recommend Ruth Reichl's books as an alternative for a food lover.

5 out of 5 stars Simply, a masterpiece!.......2007-02-24

This book is a treasure. To read it is to be reminded of the joy of living, AND eating. - Exquisite in every way, one savors each page as one would savor a great wine or haute cuisine.

There is no book that I can think of which begs to be enjoyed as much as this one. It is informative and witty at the same time. The illustrations are works of art, and the Salters set new standards of writing for a work such as this.

God bless them and this book. They have enriched us all. A MUST BUY!

5 out of 5 stars "Life is Meals" a book to devour!.......2007-01-16

This was a delightful read. The recipes are marvelous, the stories most entertaining. It is a book you won't want to put down and you will refer to for a lifetime. The perfect hostess gift!!!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Overall a great resource.......2007-09-04

This is a great recipe book for those a little intimidated by feeding their new eater but also wanting food to be wholesome, nutritious, adventuresome, and fun. The recipes have made me think of new combinations or add a little spice here and there that I might not have otherwise. The only shortcoming is mixing some of the one year old recipes with those of 9 months up to 1 year, which means the recipes with milk (and eggs depending upon your pediatrician's advice) might not really be suitable for a while longer. It's a bit confusing and limits your options in that age range. I am definitely ready to introduce more things to my daughter within her current repertoire and need a few more hints for the next couple of months. I'll check around elsewhere for those, but this is a great book to have on hand nonetheless.

3 out of 5 stars Harder.......2007-08-23

This book has harder recipes and if I would have gotten this book by itself it would have been a turnoff to making my own baby food.

5 out of 5 stars Great for baby, excellent for children!.......2007-08-16

The book starts out with explanations of organic versus non. Then into baby recipes and finally ones for toddlers. Great uses of a large variety of fruits and vegetables. A must have for your bookshelf!

4 out of 5 stars good baby's first cookbook .......2007-08-09

I bought this to learn how to make food for my first baby. I previewed many others. It's a great book with lots of suggestions for different foods and combinations to feed. It gives very detailed directions for cooking the foods either on the stove top or in the microwave for every recipe. This would be helpful for someone who does not cook a lot, though I find myself just giving the baby whatever we have on hand and cooking it or mashing very simply. I think the best thing about this book is the guidlines for what to feed and when. Also which foods to avoid at what ages. I am sure I will use it more as he gets older and starts to eat more combos of food. Very user friendly book with lots of tips throughout. All in all a good first baby cook book.

5 out of 5 stars my boy loves it! the food is great!.......2007-08-08

great recipes for all age ranges as well as good dietary info. as you get further into the book, some of the recipes are so good that my wife and i find ourselves snacking on the muffins and cakes that come from the book. i would highly recommend this if you like to cook and want to make food for you child that is better than the boring fare of other cookbooks.

Book Description

Whether you're 23 or 63 now is the time to start eating the SuperFoods way. By incorporating these foods into you regular diet you can actually change the course of your biochemistry and stop the incremental changes in your body that lead to diseases such as type II diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers, obesity, and Alzheimer's.

So what are the SuperFoods? Don't worry. You won't have to subsist on sprouts and shots of wheatgrass juice. The fourteen foods are beans, blueberries, broccoli, oats, oranges, pumpkin, salmon, soy, spinach, tea, tomatoes, turkey, walnuts and yogurt. Not exactly a broccoli fan? No problem. Each food comes with a list of "sidekicks" that provide similar benefits. Have cabbage, turnips, or bok choy instead.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A solid, general rubric for proper eating.......2007-09-26

SuperFoods is a great leap in the right direction for anyone looking to improve his or her diet.

Positives: the format and suggestions are some of the best in the diet class. It's easy to follow, the suggestions are not too expensive, and the book includes a great deal of scientific explanations and references.

Negatives: the author suggests consuming beans, oats, soy, and dairy. These foods are generally beneficial for one's health, however after reading The Paleo Diet: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Food You Were Designed to Eat by Dr. Cordain, I learned that human bodies are not properly engineered to consume such foods.

Conclusion: this book is a tremendous foundational guide to proper nutrition. For those who want to take it to the next level, I would recommend The Paleo Diet instead.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my life!.......2007-09-16

My doctor recently diagnosed me with diabetes in addition to my longstanding problem of high cholesterol and high triglycerides, which was also affecting my liver. I was quite overweight but didn't really care until that point - there's always tomorrow to lose it, right? He put me on a cholesterol and triglyceride lowering medicine and told me I needed to lose weight. This time I took him seriously, and I also read SuperFoods Rx and SuperFoods Healthstyle. I started exercising (walking) and eating healthy by following these two books' recommendations. So far I've lost 31 pounds without feeling deprived or going on some weird diet. I feel great, my diabetes is well controlled, and my cholesterol, triglycerides and liver function are in terrific shape now. The Super Foods have found a permanent place in my diet, and exercise a permanent place in my lifestyle. Thanks to these two books I believe I've saved my life and will enjoy better health over the long term. I've sent them to my brother to help him make the changes he needs for the same reasons. I highly recommend SuperFoods Rx and SuperFoods Healthstyle!

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener.......2007-09-04

I've been a vegetarian for 21 years and thought that I followed a balanced diet... well, this book opened my eyes. I loved it because it explains how each of the superfoods contributes to your health, the recipes are very easy to make and since I started putting it in practice, I feel a lot better and more energized :-) Great purchase !

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to promote healthy food choices.......2007-08-23

This is an excellent book to help learn more about making beneficial food choices as part of a healthy lifestyle. It is not a fad diet or gimmick to lose weight fast. In addition to the 14 suggested "Super Foods," the author identifies "sidekicks" for each, which offer similar benefits. The author also provides recipes, offering guidance on how to prepare these foods using healthy cooking choices, too. (I've already tried a few and they're fabulous!) Finally, throughout the entire book the author supports his information with research-based evidence, with references, from peer-reviewed journals.

Although the focus is not on losing weight, when you take the advice of the author and begin to eat all of the foods necessary for a long, healthy life, you have little room left to eat the garbage that keeps on the extra pounds!

This is not just a book I recommend to friends and family - this is one I've already purchased several copies of for friends and family!

5 out of 5 stars Healthy eating.......2007-08-15

This is a super book for people wanting to make good food choicies. What set this book apart is that the various foods listed are accompanied by what diseases and conditions they help to prevent or combat. And, suprisingly, none of the foods are exotic foods!
A surprise benefit of has turned out to be weight loss. I am assuming it is from the low glycemic index.
