Customer Reviews:
Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.

Book Description
This established text continues to provide a rigorous account of the principles and practice of experimental organic chemistry, taking students from their first day in the laboratory right through to research work. New to this edition, a microscale approach has been integrated into the entire text, alongside conventional manipulations, bringing it in line with current laboratory practice. Maintaining the unique structure of the previous edition, the first half of the book surveys all aspects of safe laboratory practice, the use of a wide range of purification and analytical techniques, particularly spectroscopic analysis. The second half contains easy-to-follow experimental procedures, each designed to illustrate an important reaction type of basic principle of organic chemistry. Tried and tested over the past decade, these experiments are graded according to their complexity and many of these have microscale equivalents. Of prime importance, all aspects of health and safety in the laboratory have been updated according to the latest guidelines and are highlighted throughout the text.

wish i was assigned a different text book.......2006-03-11
was required by my school, thats why i cought it. has a lot of typos in it, and doesn't explain the experiemnts very well.
Very marginal over all
Everything a chemistry textbook should not be.......2005-05-22
Horribly written. Painfully disorganized, bouncing from technique to technique and concept to concept at COMPLETE random. Zero photo plates and minimal line drawings that aren't recognizable as anything actually seen in a laboratory. Structural formulas that look like they were produced in MS Word. In fact, the whole ugly layout has this appearance. The $107 price tag must have been a belabored attempt at humor.

Book Description
Matrix isolation is a technique for trapping reactive species at very low temperatures and studying them spectroscopically. This book offers detailed practical advice on how to carry out matrix-isolation experiments, and is a unique introduction to the subject. Chapter 1 introduces a brief historical survey of the development of the technique that incorporates a discussion of its strength and limitations. Chapter 2 provides a thorough description of the building of a matrix-isolation laboratory from scratch. All the necessary equipment is described in full and there are diagrammatic examples throughout. In later chapters, ancillary equipment for generating reactive species, and an informative description of the various methods for forming low-temperature matrices are dealt with. There then follows a chapter on the specialized technique of matrix photochemistry with polarized light. The final chapter comprises an extensive collection of classic matrix experiments which have been selected due to their ease of application and which will thus serve as useful exercises for testing new pieces of equipment. This accessible text offers thorough coverage of the topic and will be invaluable to postgraduate and industrial chemists as an introduction to matrix isolation techniques. Researchers in chemistry and related fields who are considering whether matrix isolation can play a part in their own research will also find this book useful.

Customer Reviews:
A phenomenal text by a phenomenal teacher.......2005-10-14
Dr. Daniel Palleros is one of the finest experimental organic chemistry instructors in the University of California system, which is a truly impressive accomplishment. Dr. Palleros has for years been publishing and refining his experimental organic chemistry textbooks in-house at UC Santa Cruz, and has finally conglomerated the majority of his publications into a single, large, widely availible volume.
Dr. Palleros' writing style is engaging and accessible, covering both theory and application. His experiments are chosen excellently for diversity, challenge and depth. This volume is more than worth the price of admission, and would be an exceptional resource for any experimental organic chemistry insructor or student.
As a practicing (analytical) chemist, long since graduated, I still covet my now tattered advanced experimental organic chemistry 112L/M/N manuals and refer to them far more than any other college text in the subject, bar none. This volume has the advantage of being hardbound and professionally bound, and now serves as a much more durable replacement.
This volume has my Highest Possible recommendation.
Student of the Publisher: Winter quarter 2004.......2004-03-14
I think the book was excellent! And I would underline that word if I could. I am taking Daniel Palleros's Organic Chemistry right now. The only thing greater than his book is his teaching. I recommend it to any student or instructor teaching organic chemistry.

ASIN: 049501334X |
Book Description
This proven and well-tested laboratory manual for organic chemistry students contains procedures for both miniscale (also known as small scale) and microscale users. This lab manual gives students all the necessary background to enter the laboratory with the knowledge to perform the experiments with confidence. For the microscale labs, experiments were chosen to provide tangible quantities of material, which can then be analyzed. Chapters 1-2 introduce students to the equipment, record keeping, and safety of the laboratory. Chapters 3-6, and 8 are designed to introduce students to laboratory techniques needed to perform all experiments. In Chapters 7 and 9 through 20, students are required to use the techniques to synthesize compounds and analyze their properties. In Chapter 21, students are introduced to multi-step syntheses of organic compounds, a practice well known in chemical industry. In Chapter 23, students are asked to solve structures of unknown compounds. The new chapter 24 introduces a meaningful experiment into the textbook that reflects the increasing emphasis on bioorganic chemistry in the sophomore-level organic lecture course. This experiment not only gives students the opportunity to accomplish a mechanistically interesting and synthetically important coupling of two a-amino acids to produce a dipeptide but also provides valuable experience regarding the role of protecting groups in effecting synthetic transformations with multiple functionalized molecules.

Book Description
In the past decade, combinatorial and high throughput experimental methods have revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry, allowing researchers to conduct more experiments in a week than was previously possible in a year. Now high throughput experimentation is rapidly spreading from its origins in the pharmaceutical world to larger industrial research establishments such as GE and DuPont, and even to smaller companies and universities. Consequently, researchers need to know the kinds of problems, desired outcomes, and appropriate patterns for these new strategies. Editor James Cawse’s far-reaching study identifies and applies, with specific examples, these important new principles and techniques.
Experimental Design for Combinatorial and High Throughput Materials Development progresses from methods that are now standard, such as gradient arrays, to mathematical developments that are breaking new ground. The former will be particularly useful to researchers entering the field, while the latter should inspire and challenge advanced practitioners. The book’s contents are contributed by leading researchers in their respective fields. Chapters include:
-High Throughput Synthetic Approaches for the Investigation of Inorganic Phase Space
-Combinatorial Mapping of Polymer Blends Phase Behavior
-Split-Plot Designs
-Artificial Neural Networks in Catalyst Development
-The Monte Carlo Approach to Library Design and Redesign
This book also contains over 200 useful charts and drawings. Industrial chemists, chemical engineers, materials scientists, and physicists working in combinatorial and high throughput chemistry will find James Cawse’s study to be an invaluable resource.
