Book Description
Membranes, Dissipative Structures, and Evolution Edited by G. Nicolis & R. Lefever Focuses on the problem of the emergence/maintenance of biological order at successively higher levels of complexity. Covers the spatiotemporal organization of simple biochemical networks; the formation of pluricellular or macromolecular assemblies; the evolution of these structures; and the functions of specific biological structures. Volume 29 in Advances in Chemical Physics Series, I. Prigogine & Stuart A. Rice, Editors. 1975 Theory and Applications of Molecular Paramagnetism Edited by E. A. Boudreaux & L. N. Mulay Comprehensively treats the basic theory of paramagnetic phenomena from both the classical and mechanical vantages. It examines the magnetic behavior of Lanthanide and Actinide elements as well as traditional transition metals. For each class of compounds, appropriate details of descriptive and mathematical theory are given before their applications. 1976 Theory and Aapplications of Molecular Diamagnetism Edited by L. N. Mulay & E. A. Boudreaux An invaluable reference for solving chemical problems in magnetics, magnetochemistry, and related areas where magnetic data are important, such as solid-state physics and optical spectroscopy. 1976
Customer Reviews:
Very detailed explanation of the theory.......2002-01-18
I got this book to learn more about various biophysical techniques. I have been doing research in this area for a few years and felt it was high time to get some formal explanations of the theory behind all the experiments that I do.
The book presents a detailed description and account of the theory of numerous techniques including absorption and emmission spectroscopy, NMR, CD, crystallography, chromatography, electrophoresis and many other methods.
Although the authors claim that readers need not have any experience in physical chemistry I think this is a little far fetched. Having just taken a course in quantum mechanics, I still struggled through some of the derivations. I think this is a good book for people who either have had prior experience with the field of biophysics, or have a strong mathematical background. This book is not a walk through the park. There are many equations and at times more advanced mathematical techniques such as fourier analysis or matrix algebra are used. If you want an introduction to biophysics, you're better off using an easier, less mathematically rigourous book. For example, if you're interested in spectroscopy, there is a simpler book called Biological Spectroscopy by Campbell and Dwek. However, if you are interested in the theory behind these important techniques and don't mind a little math, this is the book for you. Biophysics is an ever expanding and exciting field; this book can show you why!
Indespensable series-most useful volume for serious biosci........2000-07-18
I used the 1980 edition of this series at UC Berkeley when studying Biophysics there, then needed it for a class in molecular biology. The series takes the most precise examination of the functioning and theory with serious treatment employing calculus to describe dynamic processes in contrast to many other texts that offer only cartoons, photographs and simple math for the mathematically challenged undergraduate. After I graduated, the series was the only indespensable textbook for me in my research at Cetus Corporation where the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was developed. The inventor of PCR (Kary Mullis) shared the Nobel prize for chemistry for the process in 1993. My research on HIV was illuminated by the Cantor & Schimmel series and I learned the fundamentals of unfamiliar methods by use of this particular volume of the series. It's no wonder that my original copy disappered. I look forward to getting the 1997 edition of this volume.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2005-02-27
I notice that some reviewers complain of the difficulty of this book. I would have to say that this is only true to the extent that Voet & Voet covers so much material that there are bound to be a few difficulties. Clearly;- there is room for improvment in this category.
However, demanding crystal clarity from a subject that is far from set in stone is an unreasonable demand. You can only compare V&V to other books in its category. In my opinion, this book is the best overall biochemistry book. If you read Stryer or Lodish, you begin to think that you understand biochemistry. However, when you read a Voet & Voet chapter on the same subject, you realize that the other books were just glossing the subject. While Lodish gives you a better understanding of the purpose of various biochemical systems, the V&V gives you the nuts and bolts approach.
I would have to say that James Watson's new book "Molecular Biology of the Gene" is better written and more in-depth than Voet & Voet in the limited subject of gene expression, but, that hardly diminishes the V&V accomplishment. It's like this;- if you expect to really use your knowledge of biochemistry, you need to include a reading of V&V. Otherwise, Stryer is much easier. This is exactly what I was told by working biochemists, and, I am passing this advice on to you, the potential reader of this book.
Great book...too bad pages are missing.......2004-10-12
This WOULD be a great edition of Voet and Voet. Unfortunately this book is riddled with missing pages! I've only had the book for a few weeks now, and I've already noticed that there are at least 30 pages missing (Chapter 10 is completely GONE).
I don't know if this just a bad copy, but I just wanted to warn whomever decides to purchase this book. I would stick to the second edition, its perfectly fine unless you really need a recently published biochem book.
Graduate Level Book.......2004-09-09
I bought this book for a graduate level biochem class. However after spending a couple of months with this book I hardly use it. The diagrams and tables are excellent, but the way the text is written is horrible. Most of my biochem professors do not like the book for that reason (we use it here because one of our professors was an author). Some might tell you that because it is a graduate level text it is supposed to be hard to understand, that is hog wash. I don't recommend buying this book unless you have to, there are much better selections out there.
Graduate Level but very good read.......2004-07-22
I used this textbook as the primary book for my graduate level biochem class. Its a very tough read sometimes because of the amount of information packed into each page but all in all it is very well written and more than worth the money.

Besides the state-of-the art science, the book also provides introductory information to non-specialists to enter and understand this field.
Book Description
The Fifth Edition of this accurate and well-tested lab manual contains 15 general chemistry and 20 organic/biochemistry safety-scale laboratory experiments. The experiments are designed to use small quantities of chemicals and emphasize safety and proper disposal of materials. 'Safety-scale' is the authors' own term for describing the amount of chemicals each lab experiment requires--less than macroscale quantities, which are expensive and hazardous, and more than microscale quantities, which are difficult to work with and require special equipment. This lab manual provides a unique blend of laboratory skills and exercises that effectively illustrate concepts from the main text, CHEMISTRY FOR TODAY: GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOCHEMISTRY, Fifth Edition.
Customer Reviews:
Do not buy Used..........2007-02-15
For the first experiment, you have to cut out a page of the book! Don't buy used, as such little things as missing pages will hinder your success!
