Book Description
As customers and shareholders demand better products faster, more pressure is felt by technical professionals to develop it now and develop it right the first time. Considered the breakthrough design and inventive problem-solving approach of the past 100 years, TRIZ is a unique, algorithmic approach to problem solving that allows engineers, planners and managers to formulate the best possible solutions for technical systems problems and predict future product needs based on technology evolution and competitive advantages. Developed in Russia, the popularity of TRIZ is now spreading to Europe, the United States, and Japan, but until now no comprehensive, comprehensible treatment of the topic has been available in English. Simplified TRIZ: New Problem Solving Applications for Engineers and Manufacturing Professionals not only demystifies TRIZ, but it also shows how it can be used in new ways to enhance Six Sigma, Constraints Management, Supply Chain Management, QFD, and Taguchi methods to gain innovative and technological competitive advantages. This practical how-to guide teaches you how to solve problems creatively, and more importantly, shows you how to find and foresee the evolution of problems in the future. It provides many exercises, worksheets, and tables to further illustrate the concepts of this multinational method. Implement the same problem-solving tool that many Fortune 500 companies are already using with Simplified TRIZ.

Simplistic description - poorly written.......2006-10-05
The method itself is extremely interesting, unfortunately the authors repeat the same examples over and over again. Very annoying. The style borders on boring. I would recommend definitely reading the book from Savransky as a much better example of TRIZ
THE textbook for basic TRIZ education.......2005-10-27
Simplified TRIZ provides the theoretical foundation for the beginner to learn the practical application of the TRIZ methodology. Domb and Rantanen present a cohesive and structured breakdown of the basic components of TRIZ: the Ideal Final Result and Ideality, Contradiction Theory, Resources, and the Patterns of Evolution. The book's importance is such that I use it as a supporting text for my basic TRIZ curriculum. The students find it easy to understand as well as demonstrative enough to teach application.
Dr. Domb's credibility (international TRIZ evangelist and editor of the TRIZ Journal, www.triz-journal.com) in the quality and innovation communities is such that this book MUST be studied if you are serious about TRIZ.
Interesting.......2005-08-02
I found the book very interesting, even if I was not able to apply it to real problems we face yet.
A brilliant model of problem solving.......2003-07-05
Using a perfect model, this books first introduces characteristics of GOOD solutions, then step by step, it describes triz problem solving tools (and strategy development tools as well) all integrated into each other.
As stated in the title, it's a simplified book so you can't find some advanced tools like su-field modeling in it.

Chemistry: Concepts and Problems: A Self-Teaching Guide (Wiley Self-Teaching Guides).......2007-08-08
Years ago my high school chemistry teacher told me I was too dumb to understand chemistry. This book helped me pass out of introductory college chemistry and gave me the confidence to take on upper division chemistry classes as I pursue a second career as a certified nurse practioner.
The authors take you by the hand and walk step by step through a world that is logical and challenging. Their teaching method dispelled my fears of being too dumb and established a new found belief that I can and do understand chemistry.
I hope it will do the same for you.
Great layout, easy book to follow.......2007-05-24
I find this book a very thorough and painfully methodical step-by-step guide. Each concept is presented in a logical sequence and is broken into small pieces so it can be easily learned and absorbed. It has all the characteristics of good teaching: Small fractions of knowledge introduced progressively, frequent repetition, test questions on every other sentence, each piece is based on the previous, logical correlates and a sum-up test at the end of each passage. I don't mind the answers under each question, in fact I prefer it as it gives me instant feedback without having to flip back the pages 4 times a minute. I just hide the answers until I've answered the question. Even my cat could learn chemistry with this book. Brilliant!
Pretty good book.......2007-05-20
Useful information for someone who had chemistry 37 years ago and now taking it again. The information was pretty clear and the actual problems are easy to work. I got this book along with another one, and my "fears" were resolved before I even started the class.
Top Notch for Intro Chem.......2007-05-01
This book is fabulous. I purchased it so that I could more easily homeschool my eighth grader as I prepare him to take AP Chem next year. I have an excellent background in chemistry myself, so I was surprised to find myself looking at some topics in a fresh and helpful way. This book is easy to follow, with clear and understandable step-by-step problems making up each chapter. My 13 year old was coming up with the answers before I even finished asking the questions, it was that clear.
There are two reasons that I am only giving 4 stars:
1) I would have liked to see many more problems in order to reinforce the concepts that were so carefully laid out. I had to borrow a text book so that I could add more problems for my son.
2) I am aware of the possibility that my pre-existing understanding of the material might have allowed me to teach it more thoroughly and easily than your average homeschooler. It might not go into enough depth as a curriculum if you are looking for the whole enchilada. You might need to borrow another text to supplement it.
Overall...wonderful investment, inexpensive, great "frame" for introductory chemistry. I think this would be AMAZING as a "cheat" book for a high schooler or college student who is struggling.
Easy, simple, informative........2007-03-23
I didn't like chemistry at school but now I'm interested. It's excellent for learning the basics and doing it alone.

Just Perfect.......2007-06-23
I got this and some other books to get my son ready for HS Honors Chemistry over the Summer. It is just the right level. The many detailed worked examples are clear and there are lots of extra problems to practice on. I looked at quite a few others including Schaum's more general "General Chemistry" and this was the best.
With this book, I became self-taught in chemistry.......2007-02-02
A few years out of high school, I was working construction and decided that it was time to go to college. After doing an agonizing reappraisal of my finances, I realized that I could not afford to either take the time off work or pay a great deal for tuition. I had recently read a brief article in an issue of Reader's Digest that described the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. Realizing that this would be an option for college credit and then discovering that there was a CLEP test for chemistry, I purchased this book and began studying.
It was very hard at first, balancing the chemical equations was a form of algebra problem far beyond those I was familiar with. Nevertheless, I persevered in two ways. I managed to work my way through the book doing nearly all of the problems and I also passed the CLEP chemistry test with flying colors. I then went on to get a chemistry major and only once did I slip below an A.
While I don't belittle the amount of time and effort I put forth, it was the quality of this book that got me through. While the problems were hard, they were still doable and once done, you have learned the material. No higher praise can be given.
Excellent textbook.......2006-08-31
This is a superb self help textbook which provides concise, clear and easy to understand material. The solutions are really simple to follow. I truly recommend to anyone who needs a guide to his or her chemistry studies.
Excellent self-contained inexpensive chemistry textbook.......2006-07-15
This has got to be just about one of the best Schaum's outlines available, and that is saying a lot, since there are many good ones. I picked up a copy for self study due to a domino effect - I was attempting to learn molecular biology, which caused me to review my college biology, which in turn meant remembering my college chemistry.
I bought this book and read and worked through the exercises from chapter one on quantities and units through chapter 17, acids and bases. At no time did I need to seek out another textbook to solve the problems. Everything you need as far as "lecture" is in the outline. All included tables, figures, definitions, explanations, and example problems are complete and excellent. None of the mathematics involved in chemistry calculations is difficult, but the rules can get involved and you need a good book like this one to explain all of the variations involved in solving problems.
Chapters 1 through 14 cover what you would normally learn in a two semester sequence of college chemistry. From that point on in the outline there are a series of miscellaneous topics. Of course, the one I appreciated the most was chapter 15 on organic chemistry and biochemistry, because it directly relates to what I needed to know so I could read the references to chemistry in the biology books without scratching my head. There are also additional chapters on thermodynamics and chemistry, acids and bases, metal ions, electricity and chemistry, and the chemistry of nuclear processes.
Whether you are a college chemistry student, or someone like me who needs to review the topic, I strongly advise you to pick up a copy of this inexpensive yet extremely clear and complete Schaum's outline. It also serves as a great reference after you finish your studies.
This is what a chemistry help book should be!.......2006-02-14
Over the passed few months, I have been buying a lot of chemistry help books to help me survive college chemistry. I have bought the more popular ones like Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry. Both of these books are ok, but the part that they really lack is that they didn't adequately help me in the math of chemistry. In fact, it's actually kind of misleading to read these books, and then take a chemistry class. Because these books brush over the math of chemistry so much that I was led to believe that chemistry didn't have that much math in it. But nothing could be further from the truth! When I took my first chemistry class, I felt like I had more math than I did in my actual math class. And, unfortunately, both Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry didn't help out too much in this area (and to make matters worse, the FEW examples of math based chemistry problems they had were ridiculously easy.)
I was fed up. I had spent money on two chemistry books that were near worthless as far as helping me out with the math. And when it came to chemistry 102, Chemistry for Dummies might as well have been cast into a fire.. as it doesn't seem to cover much of anything passed chemistry 101 (just look up "enthalpy" in the index... it doesn't even merit a mention in Chemistry for Dummies!). After I told my professor about my problem, he showed me Schaum's Outlines for College Chemistry. I thought, "Oh great, another worthless chemistry book." But then when I flipped through it, it was like a dream come true. Not only does it cover just about every single topic from chemistry 101 AND 102, it also has page after page after page of examples of math based chemistry problems, and it breaks the problems down so that I could teach myself how to work the math problems.
And incase anyone is wondering, yes it does explain the main topics in chemistry. So it's not just a straight math book. The explanations are a little dry compared to Chemistry for Dummies and the Idiot's Guide to Chemistry, but this book is so infinitely awesome in every other way, that this is easily forgivable (besides, the Dummies and Idiot's book may be more fun to read, but they do so at the sacrifice of information, and are often overly simplistic).
As far as I'm concerned this is a TRUE chemistry help book. It is by far the most complete chemistry help book I have ever seen. Remember this: chemistry is not a spectator sport. It is a lot of math, and math must be practiced over and over until it is mastered. Chemistry is not a subject like biology where all you have to do is "read it and memorize it". If you're looking for a good chemistry help book, then I don't think you have to look any further than Schaum's College Chemistry.

Customer Reviews:
This book is crap.......2005-09-27
Ok, I will be clear that I am not reviewing this exact book, but the purely organic chemistry book that is a 1991 version that I got at the library. I have never actually taken organic chemistry. I was hoping to get a leg up, and this was the only book at the library on it, so I checked it out. And I am finding it terribly lacking in explanation. It is all problems and little explanation. It takes one paragraph and one example to explain something, which isnt enough to cover all aspects of the topic to where one can understand it, then it proceed to give you problems that you cant really work, but you follow through them and try to understand why they work, and most of the time there is a short explanation as to why the answer is the correct one. There are handy little charts here and there that make things a little easy, although it needs more. I have been able to grasp most of the information due to this book, but there are key topics that are recurring that I dont fully understand and it doesnt matter how much I read that one paragraph, I dont fully get it. Afterwards I went online to clear up the discrepencies, and I easily got it. From the review here, it sounds like this book is better than taking the class. I hope that is not the case. But I can tell you from the standpoint of someone that has never studied organic chemistry, but has taken general chemistry, this book is insufficient as a textbook.

If you love O. Chem... what's wrong with you?!.......1998-04-04
I have found the Schaum's Review series very helpful both in review and in independent study, especially for Organic Chemistry. Many times, chemistry students fail to learn key concepts not because they are incomprehensible (thankfully) but rather because they were either explained badly or simply explained in a way that does not make sense to a student. This book explains all the key concepts and includes almost 2000 problems to make sure you understand O. Chem. clearly even if you're so sick of it you're comtemplating shoving an Erlenmyer full of benzene down your professor's Organic throat. Buy it, and save your sanity.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as it could be.......2007-07-28
1. No review of subject - only solved problems
2. Not keyed in with Schaum's College Chemistry which does have some basic theory - so you will be doing them out of order with some texts.
3. No unsolved problems to work on to test yourself.
The thing I love about Schaum's outline series is they give you a brief discussion of theory, then a few problems solved in great detail and then several more just like it with the answer but no detail for you to figure out. This book doesn't do that - each problem is solved in moderate detail and some are fairly complex so you have to be pretty sure of what they are talking about before you tackle the problem. The problems increase in difficulty within each chapter so it has some tutorial aspect there.
I would use this for review after I've completed my text and the Schaum's College Chemistry or to hunt some problem that stumped me in my textbook to see how to do it.
Useless.......2005-02-12
This book has the educational value of an inert gas, and is untainted by so much as a chemical trace of intelligence. If you buy this book thinking that it wil save your posterior, think again; most of the problems do not correspond to the types of questions routinely asked in college/university chemistry examinations. Find a good textbook, and search ebay for a corresponding instructor's solution manual.

Excellent referrence book for college chemistry........2000-03-26
I have used this book as a referrence numerous times when I needed to reinforce my understanding of certain problems. Most college text books do not provide enough (or varied) chemistry problems. This book may help you in that arena. The chapters may not go in order with the text that you are using but each section is very simple to find. The book claims to take you all the way through to the most advanced chemistry problems. This book may even be useful in brushing up for your MCAT. Good luck.

For most health books, the word cure in the title is a definite sign to steer clear. The Diet Cure is a refreshing exception. Author Julia Ross has the unusual job description of "nutritional psychologist," which means that she works with people to eradicate food cravings, addictions, and eating disorders (including overeating). The gist of The Diet Cure plan is that food allergies, hormonal irregularities, blood sugar swings, and thyroid dysfunction, among other factors, cause biochemical imbalances that lead to food addiction and weight gain, and that these problems can usually be lessened or eradicated with the proper diet and supplements.
To be sure, most of these health problems ought to be diagnosed by a medical professional, but they often get overlooked because their symptoms can be numerous and vague (fatigue, depression, inability to concentrate). They're not easily diagnosed by the common managed-care tests (such as the TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, blood test; Ross advises several more specific tests if a thyroid problem is suspected). Ross's questionnaires, worksheets, and profiles of case studies from her 10 years of clinical experience will enable you to determine what may be the hidden causes that sabotage your weight-loss efforts.
Ross's book should be lauded for its educational tone. She warns of the dangers of zinc and vitamin B1 deficiencies, two common problems found in chronic dieters, along with protein and fat deficiencies and adrenal exhaustion (which is particularly common in caffeine fiends). She rails against the most popular diet programs, including the Zone, the Atkins Diet, and even Weight Watchers, for (among other things) their ignorance of food allergies such as grains, dairy products, and sugar. For those whom Ross terms, perhaps frighteningly, sugar addicts or "recreational sugar users," she suggests an amino-acid and fish-oil supplement plan to curb sugar cravings and aid weight loss. Many of her patients over the past decade testify in the book that their environmental allergies and weight-loss problems disappeared after they cut sugar from their diets.
Ross's suggestions may seem radical to many primary-care physicians; her approach to health and weight loss definitely takes a holistic approach. She does, however, back up her suggestions and plan with references to medical studies, along with dozens of print and online resources on finding a nutritionist, naturopathic physician, holistic M.D., and testing labs (many of them mail-order). This is one diet that Americans in particular ought to pay attention to.
Book Description
This fast, personalized body repair manual for weight loss, mood balance, and energy will leave you satisfied--not starving.
More than eighty million Americans are regular dieters and eight million of them suffer from some sort of eating disorder. Just as many eat normally but still gain weight. Finally, there is a plan to end yo-yo dieting and binge eating. Based on ten years of proven clinical results, The Diet Cure shatters the myths to reveal the real causes of overeating and weight gain. In this individualized program that begins with an 8-Step Quick Symptom Questionnaire, you'll discover your unique underlying biochemical imbalances--hormonal irregularities, blood sugar swings, food allergy/addictions, unrecognized thyroid dysfunction, and a deficiency of "good" fats. And you will learn how to eliminate them with your own targeted nutrition strategies.
A pioneer in the field of nutritional psychology, Julia Ross has developed a breakthrough method using amino acids to jump-start the program. You will feel your mood improve and your food cravings disappear within 24 hours. Charts, worksheets, and inspiring case histories from Ross's own clinic offer readers of Sugarbusters and Eat Right 4 Your Type a safe, easy-to-follow, customized program to rebalance their body chemistry and attain their ideal health weight for good.

A Miracle!.......2007-09-28
I am pretty savvy when it comes to nutrition and healthy living, I've read alot of books on this topic and have been eating whole organic foods most of my adult life. I avoid fast food, processed food, additives, simple sugars, wheat, etc. I add supplements here and there when needed, keep the meals balanced with the right amount of protien, carbs and fats, etc. I thought I was doing pretty good, at least in the top 20% so I thought. Well, Julia Ross has changed my life. Within a week on her program, the mental fog that has been slowly drifting into my existence over the past 10 years has lifted. My memory has improved as well as my focus and mental clarity. My sensitivity to life's pressures and stresses is cut by half. I have more energy and it is more consistent through the day. My carb addiction and afternoon blood sugar drops (I have often commented (half) jokingly about joining "bread addicts anonymous") are nothing like they were. After one week on her program, I have experienced a dramatic improvement in all these areas. The program lasts three months, I am truly excited to see the end results of this cure. I purchased this book for myself along with The Mood Cure for my husband and we have been going through the books together. We are both experiencing dramatic improvements in our lives. It is worth mentioning that I was not achieving results on the lower doses (she gives a range). Follow her instructions and increase your dose until you get results. It may seem like a lot of supplements, but stay with it and follow her instructions. Once I hit the right dosages, I got results very quickly. Julia Ross and her Nutritional Psychology colleagues call it science, but for us this information is a *blessing* of the highest order. Thank you Julia for making this information available to the masses!
Diet Cure.......2007-09-17
I liked the book and unlike most diet books as its primary role is to make one feel better rather than skinny. For those primarily interested in Amino Acids and the role of aminos in depression, anxiety, ocd, etc the Mood Cure is much better. The Mood Cure is written better, has much of the same information and diet suggestions and seems to be a rewrite of the Diet Cure, which could explain why the writing is better. At any rate both books come highly recommended. I have been following the amino acid suggestions and I must say, I feel better. Bravo!
Maks Sense of it All.......2007-07-27
Written for the lay person, but loaded with the scientific basis of nutrition and what the foods we eat do once inside our bodies. I'm following the advice given in the book and it has been spot on. I recognized a lot from college chemistry and biology, but this was far, far easier to understand and apply. I now look at food in a whole new light and feel better than I have in years. My only criticism would be that she continually refers you to other chapters, which made sense within the context of whatever subject she was on, but you had to keep going to the table of contents. It would have been helpful to have the chapter number included on the top of the right hand page so you could leaf through to the referred chapter quickly, but all in all a small inconvenience in an otherwise great experience. This book is a keeper for future reference, and I have already recommended it to some friends.
Top notch research.......2006-08-02
I work in molecular biology, and that has given me an understanding of cellular metabolism. In gaining this understanding, I have come to realize how horrific our American diets are. Unfortuneately, a few well meaning and misguided nutritionists and scientists earlier in teh twentieth century tried to reform our eating habits. These habits stuck, and now we have a country of fat unhealthy citizens. The more I read about nutrition, the more I understand what is wrong with our eating habits. The author has doen her research and has a very firm grasp on the concept of cellular metabolism. She references actual scientific studies that have been published. More and more literature is coming out debunking the food pyramid and extolling the health benefits of a high protein, low SIMPLE carb diet. This is not to be confused with diets such as Atkins, where all carbs are evil. Or diets such as weight watchers which encourage the consumption of processed foods. Or diets such as the Zone, whose recommended caloric intake is not enough to sustain basic cellular function. Diets such as South Beach are actually good models of a healthy eating plan. And amino acids, as Ms. Ross explains in her book, are the building blocks of proteins, whish are essential for our body to function. While her book does skip around, and can be a little hard to follow, it offers sound advice. Advice that sadly the rest of the world is slow to follow, out of ignorance.
Tons of information. Sometimes too much........2006-07-10
It can get a bit tedious at times and if you buy all the recommended supplements, you'll be spending a fortune. However, I did think the research was thorough and they had some really great points. Worth highlighting before passing along to someone.
Book Description
Aimed at helping the physics student to develop a solid grasp of basic graduate-level material, this book presents worked solutions to a wide range of informative problems. These problems have been culled from the preliminary and general examinations created by the physics department at Princeton University for its graduate program. The authors, all students who have successfully completed the examinations, selected these problems on the basis of usefulness, interest, and originality, and have provided highly detailed solutions to each one. Their book will be a valuable resource not only to other students but to college physics teachers as well. The first four chapters pose problems in the areas of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, thereby serving as a review of material typically covered in undergraduate courses. Later chapters deal with material new to most first-year graduate students, challenging them on such topics as condensed matter, relativity and astrophysics, nuclear physics, elementary particles, and atomic and general physics.
Customer Reviews:
Um... will be looking on for another review book.......2007-09-07
I got this book so that I could do problems and sharpen my skills.
I just did some of the problems in this book, starting with number 1, the first question is "how would you throw the ball to attain the following motion". I answered the question "you throw it forward but with a counterclockwise spin".
I then looked at the solution, it derived velocity =.4 radius * angular velocity. While that is a true relationship, the question did not ask me to derive that relationship. Furthermore, that doesn't really seem to answer the original question, the angular velocity is however I spin the ball. The tangental velocity of that spin will obviously depend on that angular velocity which I threw the ball at.
These questions seem very vague, and the solutions seem to have really read into the question that was actually being asked. This doesn't seem like the right book for me. I want a book that asks "calculate the velocity:angular velocity ratio of the ball" as opposed to "how are you going to throw it". I'll probably be selling this book soon.
I seriously recommend looking at GRE practice exams or other sources before picking up this book. Rating: 2.5 stars
Helping in Qualifier Exam...........2006-03-01
This is a good book, which contains difficult and important problems in each part of physics. Problems are quite hard. One should attempt these problems after having a clear understanding of the subject matter. Don't look at the solutions first. Spend sometimes first solving the problem. Each problem is a collection of several short problems which are really important.
I strongly recommend this to anyone who is Preparing for Qualifier exam.
A classic.......2003-09-19
Thousands of physics graduate students can't be wrong. The problems in this book may be very challenging, but they include fully worked solutions. The topics cover a very broad range of physics, though the emphasis is on selection of interesting questions rather than comprehensive coverage.
A standard.......2000-04-01
This book is a must for anyone preparting for their Physics Candidacy exam. The advanced graduate students traditionally pass this book down to the incoming graduate students. Nice challenging probelms with clear solutions. Good luck studying for the exams!

Although I have been a icu nurse for the past 20 years, I am new to end of life care. This book is with me for reference. I am becoming more informed each day. I especially like the fact I can research a symptom and then treat it without delay. The lay out of the book is easy to follow with fifteen of the most common symptoms experienced with the dying.

Book Description
Despite the industrial importance of extrusion troubleshooting, no book currently deals exclusively with this topic. This book rectifies this situation.
This book addresses all issues crucial in extrusion troubleshooting. In addition, industrial case studies, which are richly illustrating with color photographs and photomicrographs, are used to provide exemplary approaches to efficient problem analysis and problem solving.
Both authors have worked in extrusion for many years and have been involved in many troubleshooting projects. Although it is impossible to discuss all possible extrusion problems, it is possible to discuss the main categories and to develop a systematic and methodical approach to solving extrusion problems. In this book, the authors frequently use flow charts and fishbone charts to allow systematic troubleshooting.
