Customer Reviews:
A fantastic little book for students enrolled in organic chem........2007-01-06
This small book was a requirement in my organic chemistry lab last year. Unfortunately, I think I'm the only one who actually read it. Had others cracked the binding a few times I imagine there would have been fewer exploding flasks and spilled beakers. This awesome little text explains (with humor) the best ways to set up apparatus for experiments, to avoid explosions, and to get in and out of the lab quickly with as few mistakes as possible. I'm happy to report that I never lost any glassware to an explosion, though I did lose a couple pieces to carelessness. Zubrick also covers basic distillation, separation, washing, and extraction techniques, as well as briefly covering spectroscopy. A very simple and helpful book for ochem undergrads.
Can't take Ochem lab w/o it!.......2006-09-12
This is a phenomenal book in which Mr. Zubrick brings down the complexities involved in Organic Chemistry Lab into terms that undergraduates can understand. Also, in something I've never seen done before, he adds humor to his writing. I actually enjoy reading this book, and get more out of it then any other lab text I've ever read. If you take Organic Chemistry Lab without it, you're doing yourself a pretty big diservice.
Worthwile.......2006-01-28
Zubrick's manual gives a comprehensive overview of fundamental lab methods. I've found it to be very useful on many ocassions. However, some of the explanations could be improved with discussion of the theory, especially the sections on chromatography. Even so, it's cheaper than other books and explains many techniques very well.
What have I done to you chemistry??.......2005-10-10
I bought the book because they said it was good for writing Lab Reports. But no, I can't, The book is so incomplete, he wastes space trying to make it funny and humorous. I'm not gonna write his jokes on my report. Yeah and remember if you didn't copy the whole lab manual on your notebook, you are dumb and you got the highest F.
great book.......2005-10-10
very helpful for organic chemistry lab, very clear directions and the author writes in a way geared towards students so it is funny

Customer Reviews:
It is not that bad.......2003-12-15
This is my first semester organic chemistry course. Even though I have been using another book for laboratory "Organic Chemistry Lab [...] by Charles E., Jr. Bell", this book helped me to understand the concepts better (many times the instructor quized us on the reasoning behind an experiment which Bell does not mention).
Moreover, Bell's book is somewhat incomplete. For about 25% of the experiments that I performed, we used hand-outs because Bell's did not handle them correclty.
I think that "developing microscale techniques" section was really good to introduce you to the most important techniques that one must master (which Bell does not mention much either.) I think that this book is not as bad as the other reviewers think, at least, relatively not as bad as they might think.
A very bad book.......2003-09-10
This is one of the worst textbooks I have ever used. Luckily, we only used to for one week...I couldn't imagine having to use it for any longer than that. Unfortunately there isn't an option for zero stars.
The worst book I have EVER had........2003-06-04
I have had some terrible professors, but I have NEVER had a book that was as insufficient and wholly undeveloped in its topic. Mayo et al. may know what they are doing in the laboratory, but they must know NOTHING of writing books to convey knowledge. Someone told me that this is the most widely used book for organic chemistry labs. If that is true, I hate to see the sad state of science in a few years when we start to see all the chemists it produces. Because of the overwhelming difficulty of the problems in this book, students are forced to concentrate on specific answers to the questions that are asked and not on the concepts overall. The result: for all the complexity and effort involved, the student learns NOTHING. The second half of the book outright states (in the intro to Chapter 7) that "the mechanisms ... are more involved and not generally developed at the introductory level." I am an undergraduate student whose second semester of organic chemistry lab far outstrips the two- semester academic textbook.
This book is horrible.......2003-05-01
Chances are you are not buying this book for your home organic lab. You probably are buying this for a class. I feel sorry for you.
Don't buy this!.......1997-12-16
I used this text for my organic labs (2 semesters, for majors). I thought the book was pitiful. From the undergrad's perspective, it was disorganized, unclear, verbose; generally excessive. The black and white pages with black line figures are not exactly a pleasure to read. I HAD to buy it. I hope you don't!

Book Description
This edition features the successful format that has characterized the previous editions. It includes essays that add relevance and interest to the experiments, and emphasis on the development of the important laboratory techniques, the use of spectroscopy and instrumental methods of analysis, a section featuring conventional-scale experiments and methods, and a wide selection of well-tested and well-written experiments.
Customer Reviews:
Good content, poor construction.......2006-11-10
Having owned the previous version of this book, I would have to say that the layout in this new version is much more linear and easy to follow. In addition to new experiments, the instructions are clear for a beginning organic lab student. That being said, however, the material that the book is constructed from is sub par...the pages are very delicate, seeming to be made of tissue paper...Over all, I would recommend this book for its content, but not for the craftsmanship.
Book in great shape.......2005-09-19
Book is flawless, not even scratches on the cover, cannot remember promptness of delivery.
AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE!.......2001-07-25
Pavia et al's Organic Laboratory Techniques (2nd Ed) is an astonishingly excellent book for the beginning student.
In great (yet delightful) detail it describes a series of 60 varied experiments designed to acquaint the reader with a plethora of laboratory techniques, from Measuring Volumes and Weights up thru Chromatography and Spectroscopy.
Particularly good are the many exceptionally clear drawings of laboratory apparatus, and rational behind the instrumentation. (Eg, do you know why you should put a trap in the aspirator hose, or for that matter how the aspirator (vacuum) works?) Sprinkled throughout are hints on how best to perform this, that or the other thing.
A thorough reading of this gem will make you right at home in the organic chemistry laboratory, and indeed will practically make you an organic chemist in spite of yourself.
In fact, if you are thinking of going to college, you might ask whether this text is used in the college's Organic Chemistry Lab course. If not, and you are interested in science, find a school that uses it! And if you are already in a lab course with another text, you would be well advised to get this eminently readable treasure also.
Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It.......2000-08-29
Though a complete laboratory text with 50+ experiments, lab techniques, tables of unknowns and spectroscopy, the organic faculty prepare our own lab manual to be followed. Pavia text becomes a close handy reference for lab techniques and setup. The techniques section, which include filtration, crystallization, distillation (simple, fractional, and steam), chromatogrpahy (column, thin-layer, and gas)... should be carefully studied before conducting experiments for beginning students. Unless your organic lab course follows almost exactly the outline of experiments in this text, you can check it out from the library and read it.
Best organic laboratory manual available!.......1999-05-17
I have taken a full course using this book and I think that it is the best one I have seen! Organic chemistry is a hard subject and this book lays it out in an understandable way. The "techniuques" section is current, readable, and the pictures are well done. The essays that accompany many of the experiments are entertaining and give good background information that helps doing the experiments more enjoyable. Probably the best section is the "identification of unknowns" section which lays out in a good logical way how to identify what you have in the lab. I think that the book also addresses and promotes a great trend in chemistry i.e. microscale research that reduces waste and promotes conservation of chemicals and the environment.

Wade Lavender secret phen book .......2007-02-12
A must for the avid scientist in your family, helped me in many way through detailed understanding of priciples and equipment. Goog book for the novice or intermediate chemist . Will not dissapoint 5 stars
Serendipitous..........2003-09-12
As well as being extremely detailed, intelligent and helpful, this book is hysterically funny, which makes it a joy to read and easy to understand. A nice change from the usual ...yawn... science-reference manuals. I would strongly encourage other students to take advantage of this terrific piece of work.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2002-12-27
This book promise so much by the wide coverage of topics in Organic lab. but it delivers nothing. Aside from listing the topics in the Table of content. The seemingly knowledable Prof. Zubric presents an unorganize, incomprehensible 294 pages of something that read like a page from a low budget Comic Strip. Am shock that a well respected publishing house like John Wiley and Son would lend their reputation to a low quality like this. The author talked about every thing that are irrelevant. what is needed is a good intro. to the subject like -EXTRACTION and then the stepwise layout of professional quality discussion of headings like - Materials involved; procedure; observation; conclusion etc. he fail to approach the subject prof. The book would pass for a Book of Short Jokes. Do not waste your money. D BOOK DID NOT HELP ME IN MY CLASS ANYWAY...
Must Have for O-Chem Lab.......2001-12-15
Used it so much in lab, it almost became my right. VERY helpful! Easy to read with a nice twist of humor.
Right On!! The Best Lab Manual Ever!!!.......2001-11-07
This book was chock full of concise, yet extremely valuable, information, and the wit with which it was presented made prelabs bearable, if not exactly fun. Thank your lab professor if this is a required book, and definitely pick it up if it's on the reccomended list (or even if it's not!).

Modern NMR Techniques for Chemistry Research.......2002-01-05
This is an excellent book for learning the NMR basics. It is very comprehensible, thorough, and it is aimed at people who, although interested in NMR, might not have the full background to understand an in depth, quantum mechanical treatment of the subject.
I bought a second-hand copy of this book from amazon.com and am very satisfied with it. It is in almost brand new condition, with no underlinings or highlightings of any kind. Although I was at first wary of buying a second-hand book through the internet, this experience turned out to be quite satisfactory and I will likely do it again.
Excellent book for the intuitive reader.......2000-01-28
For one who's interested in NMR research there are several types of books that combine together to give a full picture of the field and its various aspects. The book by Derome supplies the intuitive overview of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, which is so much needed, especially by novices in the field, and also by more experienced NMR people who need a quick reference to an NMR related technique, phenomenon or term. Starting with a good introduction to pulse NMR, the book continues to a survey of some of the main methods employed in NMR spectroscopy: NOE and its application to the measurement of internuclear distances, homo- and heteronuclear shift correlation, polarization transfer type of experiments and the use of spin echoes. The book is loaded with illustrations that help clarify the various pulse sequences and their effect on the spin systems in discussion. The language is always clear and the lack of formal rigorousness is more than compensated for by highly imaginative qualitative descriptions of the various phenomena and methods. Each chapter ends with a list of references relevant to the content of the chapter. The only problem is that the book, wonderful as it is, hasn't been updated (if I'm not mistaken) since its first edition (1987), and in such a fast moving field as NMR spectroscopy is, many additions should be made to make the book more complete. Nevertheless, the wealth of information in the book and particularly the way it is presented, makes this book a must in any NMRist library.

Why Aren't More Women in Science?: Top Researchers Debate the Evidence
ASIN: 0841239509 |
Book Description
In spite of the increasing numbers of women entering graduate programs in the physical sciences and mathematics in recent years, they continue to remain underrepresented in tenure track academic positions in these fields. This symposium series book looks at the reasons for this under-representation of women in academic science. Social scientists examine the factors that are hindering women from attaining and advancing in these positions. The academic training of women in the US is examined as it relates to their placement in top universities. The situation of women chemists in Europe is also examined and best practices for the training and retention of women in academe are elucidated.

Book Description
Matrix isolation is a technique for trapping reactive species at very low temperatures and studying them spectroscopically. This book offers detailed practical advice on how to carry out matrix-isolation experiments, and is a unique introduction to the subject. Chapter 1 introduces a brief historical survey of the development of the technique that incorporates a discussion of its strength and limitations. Chapter 2 provides a thorough description of the building of a matrix-isolation laboratory from scratch. All the necessary equipment is described in full and there are diagrammatic examples throughout. In later chapters, ancillary equipment for generating reactive species, and an informative description of the various methods for forming low-temperature matrices are dealt with. There then follows a chapter on the specialized technique of matrix photochemistry with polarized light. The final chapter comprises an extensive collection of classic matrix experiments which have been selected due to their ease of application and which will thus serve as useful exercises for testing new pieces of equipment. This accessible text offers thorough coverage of the topic and will be invaluable to postgraduate and industrial chemists as an introduction to matrix isolation techniques. Researchers in chemistry and related fields who are considering whether matrix isolation can play a part in their own research will also find this book useful.

Book Description
Proteins are an integral part of molecular and cellular structure and function and are probably the most purified type of biological molecule. In order to elucidate the structure and function of any protein it is first necessary to purify it. Protein purification techniques have evolved over the past ten years with improvements in equipment control, automation, and separation materials, and the introduction of new techniques such as affinity membranes and expanded beds. These developments have reduced the workload involved in protein purification, but there is still a need to consider how unit operations linked together to form a purification strategy, which can be scaled up if necessary. The two Practical Approach books on protein purification have therefore been thoroughly updated and rewritten where necessary. The core of both books is the provision of detailed practical guidelines aimed particularly at laboratory scale purification. Information on scale-up considerations is given where appropriate. The books are not comprehensive but do cover the major laboratory techniques and common sources of protein. Protein Purification Techniques focuses on unit operations and analytical techniques. It starts with an overview of purification strategy and then covers initial extraction and clarification techniques. The rest of the book concentrates on different purification methods with the emphasis being on chromatography. The final chapter considers general scale-up considerations. Protein Purification Applications describes purification strategies from common sources: mammalian cell culture, microbial cell culture, milk, animal tissue, and plant tissue. It also includes chapters on purification of inclusion bodies, fusion proteins, and purification for crystallography. A purification strategy that can produce a highly pure single protein from a crude mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and cell debris to is a work of art to be admired. These books (available individually or as a set)are designed to give the laboratory worker the information needed to undertake the challenge of designing such a strategy.
Customer Reviews:
Decent Book.......2007-06-19
I was hoping for more detail, but it seems to be a good book for those just learning about the topic of protein purification.
