Book Description
Are You Looking for a Unified and Concise Approach to Teaching and Learning the Structure of Materials? Allen and Thomas present information in a manner consistent with the way future scientists and engineers will be required to think about materials' selection, design, and use. Students will learn the fundamentals of three different states of condensed matter-glasses, crystals, and liquid crystals-and develop a set of tools for describing all of them. Above all, they'll gain a better understanding of the principles of structure common to all materials. Key concepts, such as symmetry theory, are introduced and applied to provide a common viewpoint for describing structures of ceramic, metallic, and polymeric materials. Structure-sensitive properties of real materials are introduced. The text also includes a variety of worked example problems. Other texts available in the MIT Series: Thermodynamics of Materials, Vol I, Ragone, 30885-4 Thermodynamics of Materials, Vol II: Kinetics, Ragone, 30886-2 Physical Ceramics: Principles for Ceramics Science and Engineering, Chiang, Birnie, Kingery, 59873-9 Electronic Properties of Engineering Materials, Livingston, 31627-X

Customer Reviews:
The most current information.......2007-03-08
Humphreys and Hatherly did a super job here of compiling the latest information from an incredible number of resources. Good definitions for annealing phenomena and nice explanations of the mechanisms taking place. Good figures and images. I used this resource to help understand dynamic recovery and recrystallization in 304 stainless steel.
Recrystallization and Related Annealing Phenomena.......2006-11-10
A great book detailing recrystallization and annealing phenomena.
It starts from the beginning explaining phenomena clearly then works up into detail.
you don't have to be a Dr of metallurgy to understand it
Best in the market.......2001-07-19
This book provides the reader with a very good, updated and, for most of the topics covered, an in-depth discussion of all subjects associated with work hardening, recovery and recrystallization. Most of the physical metallurgy aspects of metal's deformation and related annealing processes are well presented, including good chapters on textures, hot working and modelling. The authors are well known experts in the field of physical metallurgy and have done a very good job. This is the best book on recrystallization available today, for both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Covers it all.......2001-02-27
My professor called this more a "research compendium" than a "text." Fair enough -- but it works well enough as a text.
The book covers basically all the different aspect of annealing metals: The cold worked state, recovery, recrystallization, grain growth.
The covery of the cold worked state is brief, but good. It emphasizes how stacking fault energy dominates the dislocation structure, which dominates the other processes, plus other factors (ie, strain TYPE).
The covery of recovery is fine, and it handles the static recrystallization of single phase, multiphase and ordered materials, as well as dynamic RX. Then, it hits grain growth.
The nice thing about this book it that it also covers texture effects, both in terms of cold-working and annealing, as well as methods of texture measurement and representation (pole figures, invers PF's, ODF's).
Short answer: this book covers everything.
Mysteries of materials Science........2000-10-27
Recrystallization is a phenomenon well known for a long time, but it is only know we can visualize and feel the effects of its importance more clearly with different models and latest development in Technology, as the development of new alloys.

Book Description
Polymorphism - the multiplicity of structures or forms - is a term that is used in many disciplines. In chemistry it refers to the existence of more than one crystal structure for a particular chemical substance. The properties of a substance are determined by its composition and by its structure. In the last two decades, there has been a sharp rise in the interest in polymorphic systems, as an intrinsically interesting phenomenon and as an increasingly important component in the development and marketing of a variety of materials based on organic molecules (e.g. pharmaceuticals, dyes and pigments, explosives, etc.). This book summarizes and brings up to date the current knowledge and understanding of polymorphism of molecular crystals, and concentrates it in one comprehensive source. The book will be an invaluable reference for students, researchers, and professionals in the field.

Customer Reviews:
One of the Masterpiece.......2003-08-24
This book is one of the Masterpiece in Chemistry.
You simply can not rate this book in stars values. It is one of the EPIC in Chemistry.
I should say it is a bible or Bhagavad-Gita for chemists,
An all time classic.......2001-05-13
"It is better to foresee, even without certainty, than not to foresee at all", writes Linus Pauling in the preface of this book, which has become a bible for chemists. When I first read this book, I thought that it was unnecessarily detailed. But then, as I patiently went through the chapters, I realised that Pauling has truly "foreseen with certainty" in his career and discoveries, which is slowly but surely revealed in this book.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how a few simple scientific ideas lead to the explanation of literally hundreds of phenomena. In this book, the two times Nobel Prize winner has beautifully demonstrated how his classic 'Valence Bond Theory' can be applied to explain the bewildering array of atoms, molecules and crystals around us.In each chapter, the author introduces certain classic principles like resonance, electronegativity, partial ionic character of bonds, partial double bond character, and hybridization. These concepts are today the cornerstone of the description of thousands of simple molecules. It should be noted that the valence bond approach has its drawbacks, which Pauling does not discuss. It is also true that the Molecular Orbital Theory has replaced his theory in making quantitative calculations. However, Pauling's masterly style of writing and the insights which almost each and every page of this book give the reader, are unparalleled.Even though the book would perhaps not prove useful as a modern chemistry book, I think it should be read by each and every chemist and chemistry student as the ultimate example of simplicity, variety and beauty. It is one of the finest examples of how one extraordinary scientist tries to explain diverse chemical phenomena with a few simple ideas.

Book Description
The bond valence model is an evolution of Pauling's electrostatic valence principle first enunciated in 1929. Recent improvements in crystal structure determination have allowed the model to become more quantitative. Unlike other models of inorganic chemical bonding, the bond valence model is simple, intuitive, quantitative and predictive, and requires only a pocket calculator. It can be used for analysing crystal structures and the conceptual modelling of local as well as extended structures. This is the first book to explore the theoretical basis of the model and to show how it can be applied to synthetic and solution chemistry. In analysing the chemistry of solids, the book emphasizes the separate roles of the constraints of chemistry and the constraints of 3-dimensional space. It reviews many of the applications of the model in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy, soil science, surface science and molecular biology. The final chapter describes how the bond valence model relates to, and represents a simplification of, other models of inorganic chemical bonding.
