Book Description

People have the potential to heal themselves and each other. Dr. Daniel Benor, a wholistic psychiatrist, explains how mind-body and body-mind interactions promote health or cause illness. Clear and concise explanations of a large body of research, clinical examples, and a variety of theory explain healing through complementary/alternative medicine. Dr. Benor reviews research-supporting claims that complementary/alternative therapies and bioenergy therapies are potent and effective treatments.

4 out of 5 stars A Valuable Overview of Energetic Healing.......2007-09-21

Dr.Benoir has provided an amazingly comprehensive review of research relating to energetic healing with special reference to self-healing. In spite of its breadth, the book manages to treat in 700 pages a vast array of data in satisfying depth. With over 200 pages of notes, references, a glossary and indexes of names and subjects, Dr.Benoir has made his own material readily accessible, but also a starting point for the reader's further in-depth study. This is the second of a four-volume series, the first addressing the scientific validation of spiritual or energetic healing, the third on out-of-body and near-death experiences and evidence for existence of the soul after death as well as insights provided by quantum theory, and the fourth, which synthesizes the matgerial in the preceding three volumes. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Consciousness, Bioenergy and Healing.......2007-02-14

In the ever pondered question "how does healing happen?", Daniel J. Benor discusses the role of consciousness in spiritual healing. In his second book of four on healing research, entitled, Consciousness Bioenergy and Healing, Dr. Benor discusses the current research and theories associated with how biological energy therapies might contribute to healing. He systematically reviews dozens of types of complementary therapies that have some aspect of spiritual healing associated with them to investigate the relationships between the complex workings of consciousness, and how people seem to be able to tap into it to heal others or themselves. It is important to understand that he defines spiritual healing as "a systematic, purposeful intervention by one or more persons aiming to help another living being by means of focused intention, hand contact, or passes to improve their condition." These therapies include but are not limited to therapeutic touch, biofeedback, reiki, healing touch, prayer, meditation, and qigong.

One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the question of how much healing is associated with the collective consciousness. We have no true understanding about how our thoughts affect each other for good or ill. Is it possible that we are able to tap into the Universal All to heal others and ourselves, or is it simply by suggestion that some kind of placebo effect is generated? Can suggestion activate our internal healing abilities that go beyond placebo to true healing? Dr. Benor believes that much of the research we have leans towards a universal connectedness both biologically and cosmically that we have hardly begun to understand.

Another large area of discussion is the relationship of spiritual healing in Psychotherapy. Many Psychotherapists are now incorporating aspects of spiritual healing into their practice. This area is of great interest to Dr. Benor as he is also a Psychotherapist. An aspect of spiritual healing that can be of great distress among healees, is that very often some profound realization may be brought to the surface that then leaves that person without professional support to deal with the consequences of that realization for continued healing. On the other side, when individuals are cared for under psychiatry assistance, drugs are often used to curtail anxiety that may better suited to the type of care, concern and suggestion by spiritual healers that you are not alone and will be healed. Suggestion in all forms can alleviate meta-anxiety.

When a reciprocal relationship is created between healer and healee spontaneous insights and understanding develop. Dr. Benor believes that there are several mechanisms that may contribute to these effects that alleviate, what he calls, meta-anxiety. Meta-anxiety is a type of anxiety that occurs when worrying about the possible outcomes of things like disease. If Psychotherapists can incorporate some of this type of relationship seen between healers and healees, it is possible to treat someone without the incorporation of drugs with this type of anxiety. Some of the key factors in this relationship are that 1.) Healers and healees trust that whatever happens during healing is directed by a higher power, 2.) Healers and healees communicate on a very deep levels during healing (telepathic or clairvoyant) and 3.) The healing process itself appears to help healees deal more effectively with their primary-level emotions, thus eliminating the meta-anxiety and panic.

Very little is understood about how energy therapies work to heal the body. There is much to be researched and understood. As we look deeper into this area, it is important to realize the intricacies of healing. There is no one road towards wellness, and all these roads seem to be intertwined into a complex web that will make it difficult if not impossible to qualitatively study without major flaws in research and its design. While it may be possible to study some of the competencies that create a successful healing, we may never fully understand in a scientifically designed manor the right combination of science and spirituality to cure what allies us.

5 out of 5 stars Human Consciousness and Healing.......2007-01-02

As a clinical psychologist, I am always amazed when, after asking Christian patients if they believe in spiritual healing, they say yes, adding that only holy figures are capable of this gift and not themselves.

They are unaware that "miraculous" healings have been reported since the biblical era, but the origins date back to shamanic, magico-religious healing traditions extending as far back as 15,000-40,000 years, during the Paleolithic era or that experimental studies have taken place since Bernard Grad's seminal work in the 1960s.

In contemporary Western societies, culturally unorthodox, non-instrumental physical healing procedures are known by many names: Christian Science healing, faith healing, laying-on of hands, mental healing, prayer healing, psychic healing, spirit healing, spiritual healing, etc.

Periodically, unorthodox healing methods reach public attention through the unscrupulous acts of self-proclaimed healers as well as their debunkers, whose sensational tactics rival those they seek to discredit While more vocal and negatively-biased skeptics continue to unmask ever-present charlatans in their attempts to confirm that these alleged phenomena have no place in society, serious investigations of alternate healing methods by dedicated, credible researchers have received little public or scientific attention or funding.

The growing interest in alternate healing practices is the focus of a sociological study. McGuire and her associate examined the use of alternative healing systems among "middle-class, middle-aged, well-educated, socially, culturally and residentially established suburbanites". Although adherents continued to use conventional health care in addition to an alternative healing system, they were attracted to the latter's holistic belief systems and were not driven by medical crises, as had been assumed earlier. These movements offer transcendent, holistic cosmologies, integrating the individual, the world, and the universe through the incorporation of symbols of transcendent power and order. This suggests that there is more than physical healing being sought in such practices, something that lies beyond that "dreamt of in [our] philosophy."

Consequently, the attractiveness of alternative healing practices cannot be fully explained by positing a loss of faith in conventional medicine or a need to ameliorate intractable physical disorders where conventional medicine has failed. Beyond these possibilities, the growing popularity of alternative healing practices suggests that they may address a deeper, broader, and more archaic human need in the healee and the healer.

In his remarkable accomplishment developed over two decades, psychiatrist Daniel Benor has compiled the most comprehensive collation and annotated analyses of anecdotal, clinical and experimental studies into these types of healing. Having known Dan for over 20 years, I am impressed with his persistence and objectivity in gathering information, his insights into research methodologies while remaining in touch with his humanity.

His 4 volumes are an act of love and legacy of good science dedicated towards a poorly understood, yet intensely interesting and another important aspect of the science of healing, core human needs and consciousness. I am honored to have been included in the first volume of this outstanding achievement.

5 out of 5 stars The Scientific Evidence for a Revolution in Healthcare.......2006-03-12

We owe Daniel Benor an enormous debt of gratitude for taking the time (over 25 years and counting (!)), effort and energy to see if there was any research evidence to support the use of "Energy Medicine" and Healing, and then to carefully analyze what he found.

Many years ago Dan told me that the evidence for spiritual healing was better than that for most of the rest of complementary medicine, and considerably better than the evidence for some widely used methods and techniques in use in conventional medicine!

Here is the evidence for that statement. This is the second of four volumes that will ultimately constitute part of Dr. Benor's legacy to a grateful world.

For people needing less of the research background, there is also a version of the same book for a more general readership - How Can I Heal What Hurts? (Healing Research, Vol. 2; Popular Edition) - that is also available at Amazon, that I recommend as highly as this volume.

Book Description

This acidly funny account of the battle over an offshore wind farm is both a fascinating window on the business and politics of energy and a scathing portrait of the ruling class.

When Jim Gordon set out to build a wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod, he knew some people might object. But there was a lot of merit in creating a privately funded, clean energy source for energy-starved New England, and he felt sure most people would recognize it eventually. Instead, all Hell broke loose. Gordon had unwittingly challenged the privileges of some of America's richest and most politically connected people, and they would fight him tooth and nail, no matter what it cost, and even when it made no sense.

Cape Wind is a rollicking tale of democracy in action and plutocracy in the raw as played out among colorful and glamorous characters on one of our country's most historic and renowned pieces of coastline. As steeped in American history and local color as The Prince of Providence; as biting, revealing and fun as Philistines at the Hedgerow, it is also a cautionary tale about how money can hijack democracy while America lags behind the rest of the developed world in adopting clean energy.

5 out of 5 stars Outrageous Hypocrisy Revealed.......2007-09-07

Well researched and written. This book should be read by everyone who is really concerned about the reduction in use of fossil fuels. The outrageous hypocrisy of politicians of both parties as well as some of the beautiful people who claim to support the development of alternative energy sources is laid out for all to see.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any energy entrepreneur.......2007-09-03

It would be shame for an energy entrepreneur to be tripped up by the obfuscation described in this great book without its warning. Extensively researched, masterfully written, a lesson of the times. Read it and learn! Bet you won't be able to put it down,

5 out of 5 stars Cutting edge history in the making.......2007-08-21

Cape Wind is a brilliant account of a project that has the potential to revolutionize the energy future of the US. It couldn't be more timely, given the current energy crisis, the need for serious and concrete solutions and the fact that the controversy over the project is happening at this very moment.

The authors provide a powerful experience - the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the politics and history of this project as it unfolds every day. The presentation of the facts and players is fascinating; their delivery of the story is incredibly entertaining.

Read it now and stay tuned to the project - History is being made!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing... We need a documentary on this!!!.......2007-08-21

There's too much happening here to not have a well executed and informative documentary on this. It may seem like a small issue to those outside of it, but it's implications reach much further than the Cape.

Read this easy to follow and well written account of this project and engage yourself into todays questions about our planet and our political stratosphere.

5 out of 5 stars Tad over the top- but very valuable for students & voters.......2007-08-20

We used the Cape Wind story in public policy class this winter (b4 this book came out), & students were fascinated. This book does illuminate the major actors, and provides in depth background for why a policy with this many public benefits has been stalled for years. Romney, the Kennedys, Alaskan politicians, and the Cape Cod Times (although they are good about my letters when I go home)should be ashamed of themselves.

Book Description

Oil is the most vital resource of our time. Because it is so important, misperceptions about the black gold abound. Leonardo Maugeri clears the cobwebs by describing the colorful history of oil, and explaining the fundamentals of oil production. He delivers a unique, fascinating, and controversial perspective on the industry--as only an insider could. The history of the oil market has been marked, since its inception, by a succession of booms and busts, each one leading to a similar psychological climax and flawed political decisions. In a single generation, we've experienced the energy crisis of 1973; the dramatic oil countershock of 1986; the oil collapse of 1998-99 that gave rise to the idea of oil as "just another commodity;" and the sharp price increases following hurricane Katrina's devastation in the Gulf of Mexico. Today, we are experiencing a global oil boom that, paradoxically, seems to herald a gloomy era of scarcity exacerbated by growing consumption and the threat from Islamic terrorism in the oil-rich Middle East. Maugeri argues that the pessimists are wrong. In the second part of his book, he debunks the main myths surrounding oil in our times, addressing whether we are indeed running out of oil, and the real impact of Islamic radicalism on oil-rich regions. By translating many of the technical concepts of oil productions into terms the average reader can easily grasp, Maugeri answers our questions. Ultimately, he concludes that the wolf is not at the door. We are facing neither a problem of oil scarcity, nor an upcoming oil blackmail by forces hostile to the West. Only bad political decisions driven by a distorted view of current problems (and who is to blame for them) can doom us to a gloomy oil future.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Thought-Provoking!.......2007-03-21

"Oil is the most vital resource of our time" - an attention-getting introduction to Maugeri's "The Age of Oil"

The first section covers the history of oil, beginning with Drake's discovery, Rockefeller's monopoly on refining and transportation, the entry of other competitors (Russia, Texas, Mexico, Venezuela), Churchill's leadership in converting the British Navy and then create a protected source in Persia, new uses (transportation, plastics) and the fading of its original attraction (lighting), the development of new industries dependent on oil use (autos, motels, gas stations), Texas' regulations providing a model for OPEC, new Arab producers, etc., with a periodic sprinkling of former warnings that we soon would run out. Then follows the '73 oil embargo, the '79 second shock (Iranian Revolution + rebellion in Venezuela + Soviet invasion of Afghanistan + the Iran/Iraq War), the '96 counter-shock caused by the Saudi decision to regain their market share (beaten down by considerable cheating among OPEC members; not motivated by Reagan's efforts to beat down the Soviets, though their lowered internal prices did not even cover production costs and the Saudi action sharply reduced their external earnings), and Hussein's '90 invasion of Kuwait (U.S. response was driven by fear he would go on to Saudi Arabia).

Maugeri also informs readers that Russia's shock therapy privatization failed due to the absence of a legal framework for the process, and the existing deep-rooted corruption within the system. The result was a redistribution of Russia's riches (including oil) into the hands of the elite, further acerbated by a "loans-for-shares" scheme by the oligarchs to prop up Yeltsin through the next election (Russia's failure to repay them was followed by rigged auctions that further enhanced the new capitalists' riches).

Ensuing negative production projections were caused more by disruption in Venezuela, Russia and Iraq, terrorism threats, oil companies' focus on buy-backs instead of exploration, oil company write-downs of reserves (due to the financial difficulty in developing, and in some cases even accessing them), China's surging use, and the Katrina disruption. A unique Maugeri contribution is his pointing out that environmentalists concerns also led to an exaggerated appearance of shortage due to special increased demand for the lighter, sweeter crudes most quoted in the media.

"The Age of Oil" then moves to the question "Are We Running Out of Oil?" Maugeri thinks not, again citing the numerous prior cries of impending doom. Rationale offered include Hubbard's theory applying ONLY to areas already well-explored (the U.S.), a new Russia theory disconnecting oil creation from organic sources - thus broadening its possible locations, improved recovery methods, inadequate exploration of large Middle East areas (the nations involved choosing instead to focus on developing existing fields - some of which still use 40+ year-old equipment), examples where prior recovery estimates proved wildly short (eg. Kern County, CA), neglect of alternative sources (shale oil, tar sands, ultra-heavy oils), and the potential improved efficiency from switching users to diesel.

Bottom-Line: Maugeri may well be correct in believing that oil doomsayers are overly pessimistic, especially given their track record. On the other hand, I'm also reminded of the hypochondriac who constantly woke up thinking he was dying - one day he was right! Finally, concern for global warming may make questions about oil reserves irrelevant!

1 out of 5 stars Ignorant and Arrogant Fool.......2006-12-04

This book is a sustained and viscous attack on the "Peak Oil" crowd led by Campbell, Deffeyes and Simmons. They claim that we are at or near the peak in world oil production and alternatives will not be available soon enough to prevent a bidding war for declining supplies.

Magueri's incessantly attacks them page after page using terms such as "pseudo-science" "myth" and "doomsayers." Magueri sets up the straw man "are we running out of oil" and fails to adequately address the question "when will world oil production peak?" Magueri uncritically accepts the optimistic claims of Saudi Arabia, the USGS and CERA. Magueri says the 30% of the world's sedimentary basins are unexplored but does not name any such basin. He seems ignorant of the science of petroleum geology.

World oil production is going to be less in 2006 than 2005. If in a few years it is clear that we were past the peak when this book was published then all will agree that Magueri is a laughable, ingnorant and arrogant fool.

4 out of 5 stars "The Age of Oil" by Leonardo Maugeri: The Glass is Half Full.......2006-09-26

Highly Recommended; In Part I of his book, Maugeri, a senior executive at ENI, the Italian oil "major", takes us through an overview of the history of "black gold" from its discovery up to the second Gulf War. This is a story that has been told by others (most notably Yergin). Part II, on the other hand, is primarily concerned with refuting the arguments of the oil "doomsayers" (see Simmons, Kunstler, et al) who predict a bleak future characterized by a growing World demand and a declining World supply of oil and gas. Maugeri thinks this is all nonsense, and he goes on and tries to refute each step in the doomsayers' logical construct.

At its core, Maugeri's position is based on simple microeconomics. This is the mainstream view which suggests that as with any commodity, high demand will lead to high prices which in turn will justify investments in exploration and extraction technologies, thus ultimately leading to higher supply and a fall in prices. In his view, the absence of any major new field discoveries in recent decades is nothing more than a reflection of a lack of investments in exploration during the eighties and nineties, as opposed to a clear signal that we are reaching the bottom of the barrel.

Similarly, Maugeri dismisses the concerns of the political and military strategists that fret over the West's dependence on the Middle East. In his view, the dependence is even greater in the opposite direction, a fact by now well understood by producing countries in the Middle East (including charter members of the "axis of evil" such as Iran) whose political survival is tied to satisfying the economic demands of their fast growing populations. Thus, the U.S. military presence in the Gulf region is viewed by Maugeri as unnecessary at best.

Maugeri is obviously an optimist. It is quite possible that in fact the necessary investments will be made, that new supply will come on stream "just-in-time" to meet the growing energy demands of another billion Chinese and another billion Indians eager to join the global economy and substantially raise their living standards. But there is no certainty that this will be so. It is just as easy and logically defensible to imagine a World of declining "cheap" reserves, forced to dig a lot deeper and a lot harder to satisfy the demands of a competitive global economy, where the supply trend is chronically out of step with demand, and where the market is hostage to the fear of the next supply disruption (sounds familiar?). What might be the market clearing price under such conditions? No one knows for sure. What we do know is that there is no economic law that suggests that the price of oil should always be lower than the price of a barrel of Perrier water ($426).

5 out of 5 stars A strong dose of perspective in today's crazy oil market.......2006-06-06

I found this book to be a fantastic history of the oil industry and an interesting, thoughtful perspective on the not-so-dismal future of petroleum. I've read about 20 books on energy over the past two years. For me, this one ranks a close second to Vaclav Smil's "Energy at the Crossroads: Global Perspectives and Uncertainties"; ("Age of Oil", however, is much better suited for a general audience). I found it scholarly, logical, and pragmatic. I think readers will appreciate how Maugeri unravels the complex world of oil prices, economic, political and geological impact on exploration/production, and the mysteries of reserves accounting. At $49, the book is expensive, but I think it's worth the price to anyone who's interested in the history of and prognosis for oil. I read it in two nights and found it well worth the money.

      Book Description

Evidence of rising temperatures, melting ice, rising sea levels, and damage to flora and fauna on land and in the oceans has been accumulating for several decades. Scientific bodies around the world have traced this trend to increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, most of it attributable to the consumption of fossil fuels. Despite the evidence, political debate still rages over the existence of global warming. Global Warming in the 21st Century provides a detailed review of the accumulating evidence of global warming, from the Arctic and Antarctic to the tropics, focusing special attention on a number of processes that will accelerate warming as the century passes. Extensive warming also could endanger sea life through the devastation of phytoplankton populations at the base of the oceanic food chain. Bruce Johansen presents scientific theories on the subject that conflict with popular assumptions and explains that global warming is a slow-motion crisis in which the effects of greenhouse gas emissions are not evident in the atmosphere until roughly a half-century after they occur. Extensive reports from scientific literature explain how ozone depletion in the stratosphere and warming near the surface of the Earth are related. This three-volume work also proposes detailed solutions to global warming, including a worldwide overhaul in energy systems that will go beyond the initial diplomatic efforts of the Kyoto Protocol. The set ends with one of the most extensive bibliographies in the field and includes more than 80 color and black and white illustrations.

        Book Description

This is a great collection of documents and publications from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with detailed information about biodiesel, its handling and use, and business management plans for producers.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT FOR BIODIESEL PRODUCERS (2004) - "The material contained in this book is intended to provide the reader with information about biodiesel in four basic areas: 1) Biodiesel and the liquid fuels industry 2) Biodiesel business start-up issues 3) Legal and regulatory issues 4) Operational concerns. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel for diesel engines that is receiving great attention around the world. Although it attracts the most attention because it is renewable, it can be used either pure or in blends with diesel fuel in unmodified diesel engines, and it reduces some exhaust pollutants. What is biodiesel? Biodiesel is defined as the mono-alkyl esters of fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. In simple terms, biodiesel is the product you get when a vegetable oil or animal fat is chemically reacted with an alcohol to produce a new compound that is known as a fatty acid alkyl ester. A catalyst such as sodium or potassium hydroxide is required. ! Glycerol is produced as a byproduct. The approximate proportions of the reaction are: 100 lbs of oil plus 10 lbs of methanol equals 100 lbs of biodiesel and 10 lbs of glycerol Soybean oil is the most popular feedstock in the United States. Soybeans are a major U.S. crop and government subsidies may be available to make the fuel economically attractive to consumers who need or want to use a nonpetroleum-based fuel. Biodiesel from soybeans is sometimes called soydiesel, methyl soyate, or soy methyl esters (SME). In Europe, most biodiesel is made from rapeseed oil and methanol and it is known as rapeseed methyl esters (RME). The University of Idaho has done considerable work with rapeseed esters using ethanol, which produces rapeseed ethyl esters (REE). Biodiesel can also be made from other feedstocks: Other vegetable oils such as corn oil, canola (an edible variety of rapeseed) oil, cottonseed oil, mustard oil, palm oil, etc. * Restaurant waste oils such as frying oils * Anima! l fats such as beef tallow or pork lard * Trap grease (from restaurant grease traps), float grease (from waste water treatment plants), etc."

BIODIESEL HANDLING AND USE GUIDELINES "This document is a guide for those who blend, distribute, and use biodiesel and biodiesel blends. It is intended to help fleets and individual users, blenders, distributors, and those involved in related activities understand procedures for handling and using biodiesel fuels. We hope it will be a useful tool, both when planning biodiesel use and as an ongoing resource. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, and recycled cooking oils. Biodiesel offers many advantages: It is renewable; It is energy efficient.; It displaces petroleum derived diesel fuel; It can be used in most diesel equipment with no or only minor modifications; It can reduce global warming gas emissions; It can reduce tailpipe emissions, including air toxics; It is nontoxic, biodegradable, and suitable for sensitive environments; It is made in the United States from either agricultural or recycled resources; It can be easy to use if ! you follow these guidelines." Contents include: Biodiesel Basics; What is Biodiesel? Registration and Regulation; Benefits of Biodiesel Use; Drawbacks of Biodiesel Use; Biodiesel in Non-Transportation Applications; Biodiesel (B100); Quality Specifications; Variation in Biodiesel Properties; Energy Content; B100 Cold Flow Properties; B100 Cetane Number; B100 Stability; B100 Microbial Contamination; B100 Cleaning Effect; B100 Material Compatibility; Suggestions for Transporting B100; Suggestions for Using B100; B100 and NOx Emissions; Using 20% Biodiesel Blends; B20 Cold flow; Blending Biodiesel to Make B20 or Lower Blends; B20 and Emissions; B20 Cleaning Effect; B20 Mat

          Book Description

This comprehensive set of two CD-ROMs provides a thorough collection of documents covering research into using hydrogen as a fuel and developing automobiles powered by hydrogen fuel cells. There is extensive material from the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and NASA.

Hydrogen and fuel cells have the potential to solve several major challenges facing America today: dependence on petroleum imports, poor air quality, and greenhouse gas emissions. The Hydrogen, Fuel Cells & Infrastructure Technologies Program at the U.S. Department of Energy is working with partners to accelerate the development and successful market introduction of these technologies. Hydrogen is a clean and sustainable form of energy that can be used in mobile and stationary applications. Fuel cells harness the chemical energy of hydrogen to generate electricity without combustion or pollution. Codes and standards ensure the safe use of hydrogen and fuel cells. The vision of a new energy economy based on clean, renewable hydrogen is described in the National Hydrogen Energy Vision document. The National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap and Fuel Cell Report to Congress outline the challenges we face and suggest a path forward to achieve the promise of hydrogen and fuel cells. The first steps toward the hydrogen future are already underway. The 2002 Annual Progress Report provides a complete list of DOE-funded hydrogen and fuel cell projects for 2002. In November 2002, the world's first energy station featuring hydrogen and electricity co-production opened in Las Vegas, Nevada.

During the 2003 State of the Union message, President George W. Bush announced a $1.2 billion FreedomCAR and Fuel Initiative to reverse America's growing dependence on foreign oil by developing the technology needed for commercially viable hydrogen-powered fuel cells - a way to power cars, trucks, homes and businesses that produces no pollution and no greenhouse gases. Building on the FreedomCAR (Cooperative Automotive Research) Initiative, which was launched in January 2002, President Bush is proposing a total of $1.7 billion over the next five years to develop hydrogen-powered fuel cells, hydrogen infrastructure and advanced automotive technologies. America's astronauts have used fuel cells to generate electricity since the 1960s, but more work is needed to make them cost-effective for use in cars, trucks, homes or businesses. Using current technologies, it is too expensive to produce, store, transport and distribute hydrogen fuel, or to build fuel cell engines. Additional research and development is needed to spur rapid commercialization of these technologies so they can provide clean, domestically produced energy for transportation and other uses.

In all, the disc set has over 21,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is included on the CD. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable.

4 out of 5 stars have we reached Peak Oil?.......2007-06-11

The book is both a history of the main energy sources used globally, and of the prospects for energy generation going forward into this new century. So we get a walkthrough of how OPEC arose, and how the 1973 Yom Kippur war triggered an oil crisis that gave OPEC much power. But after 1979, this diminished for some 20 years.

Other energy sources are studied. Especially coal, which tends to be more evenly distributed around the world than oil. Perhaps more to the point, US and China have ample supplies. Which means that coal is unlikely to diminish in importance.

The most intriguing question posed in the book is the Hubbert hypothesis. Otherwise called the Peak Oil idea. Namely that global oil production has peaked, or will peak soon. To be followed by a gradual but relentless decline. Naturally a disquieting prospect. Especially since China and India (as well as other developing natioons) want to continue to modernise, and will presumably need more oil. Read this part of the book carefully.
