    5 out of 5 stars Understanding volcanoes.......2002-03-25

I hardly ever read a college text straight through, but this book was so informative and lucidly written, I could scarcely put it down. I imagine "Volcanoes" is used as a freshman introductory course, as there is very little geological mumbo-jumbo about say, the differences between a reverse dip slip fault and a left lateral strike slip fault.

In fact, I wish I'd read this book first, before "The Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes" or "Perils of a Restless Planet." Its definitions are clear and easy to remember, and usually accompanied by a photograph or drawing. One of my favorites is a photograph of the San Andreas fault, which is a right lateral fault, "so called because for a person standing on either plate, the sense of motion on the opposite side is to the right."

Now, at least I understand the difference between left and right lateral faults. Dip slips and strike slips will have to wait for another book for geometrically-challenged folks like me---I can't just close my eyes and visualize a three dimensional object, unless prompted by very clear diagrams and text.

This book is an introduction to the geology of volcanoes (plate tectonics, the formation of mineral deposits, etc.), rather than a series of stories about dangerous volcanoes, although there is an appendix on "The World's 101 Most Notorious Volcanoes." One of my favorite chapters, "Volcanic Power" has little to do with volcanoes as we usually picture them, e.g. an erupting strato-volcano like Mt. Vesuvius. It is about geothermal energy, and why it might play an important role in our future:

"Even though geothermal power is still an infant and largely unproved industry, its potential makes it worth serious effort and investment. The U.S. Geological Survey in a recent assessment of potential geothermal energy resources in the fifty states to depths of 10 kilometers listed the following estimates: hydrothermal reservoirs, 12 x 10(to the 21st power) joules, or about 2 times the energy in the world's oil reserves; hot dry rock, 32 x 10(to the 24th power) joules, or about 6000 times the energy in the world's oil reserves; magma reservoirs, 4 x 10(to the 23rd power) joules, or about 80 times the energy in the world's oil reserves."

In light of recent history, perhaps we should be investing more research in our geothermal resources.

Read "Volcanoes" if you have any interest at all in geology. It would even make a good high school text, although it is a bit dated: my copy was published in 1981, but the only thing that struck me as out-of-date was a diagram of the Earth's crustal plates---the Juan de Fuca plate was labeled `Gorda Plate,' although everything was pretty much in the right place. Just be sure to buy the revised and expanded version that was published in 1989.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding blend of readability and rigor.......2001-12-07

This book presents fascinating yet complex information with commendable clarity. Not only is the writing excellent, but the diagrams add much to the exposition. For example, the diagram on page 88 ("Ring of Fire" chapter) clearly explains the relationship between severity of volcanism and earthquakes to the steepness of the angle at which a tectonic plate is subducted into the mantle. The book is sensibly organized into introductory material, chapters giving "autobiographies" of volcanoes and thus clarifying the multiplicity of volcanic and eruption types, chapters synthesizing this knowledge into generalization, and chapters explaining opportunities and risks associated with vulcanism (eruption dangers [carefully subdivided into discussion of nuées ardentes, lahars, and lava flows] potential of climatic change, likelihood of finding valuable ores, and the potential of geothermal power). Twenty-five superb color plates, in addition to the excellent diagrams, grace the book. Useful appendices include "World's 101 Most Notorious Volcanoes," web sites pertinent to volcanology, and a useful glossary (although the Icelandic term jökulhlaup [= "glacier outburst flood possibly triggered by volcanism"] is an omission I noted).
This book deserves the rare commendation of simultaneous suitability for a rigorous introductory course in volcanology and accessibility to the curious layperson with no formal geological training, such as myself.

I finally had a chance to crack open the surprise inside my copy of the Quake Handbook (two CD-ROMs at the back of PART B and another in Part A). And what a surprise!!! If I printed out all of the material packed into these the 3 included CD-ROMs, you could fill your departmental library.

Useful and rare. The CDs contain something for anyone and everyone. The contents are so voluminous, I'm thankful they had the good sense to index the contents and include this on the CD as a searchable database via Adobe PDF. So, when your colleague down the hall asks you to help him locate an odd reference, equation, or image, you should show him/her your hefty pair. Together the paired volumes and the contents of the 3 CD-ROMS are a seismological librarian's dream, including many rare and out-of-print classics. Truly a digital treasure chest of authoritative content neatly packaged. Frankly, I'm surprised L-severe did not charge extra for the CD content, as the information content is a tiny fraction of an equivalent journal subscription. I love it when they put a free toy inside.

      Book Description

An understanding of the behavior of structural systems must be acquired before engineers can effectively design a complex building system. Wind and Earthquake Resistant Buildings describes the typical process of designing a building, from the determination of design loads to the evaluation of its behavior for unusual effects. Chapters cover a broad range of topics, including wind effects, seismic design, traditional and newer types of bracing systems, and the restoration of damaged or seismically vulnerable buildings. The information is presented in a user-friendly format that allows a fundamental understanding of the behavior of steel, concrete, and composite building structures.

3 out of 5 stars A little hard to swallow, but worth the time........2005-07-19

As a first year graduate student, this was the required text in my very first course in seismology! Boy was I intimidated! I had only taken calculus up through ODE's so much of the material in this book was difficult for me to comprehend. I had no clue what a Green's function was. However, I had a good professor and TA and took extensive notes to get by. Fortunately we only used chapters 2,3,4 and 5. Do yourself a favor if you have to use this book, and you're not a calc/physics guru, by obtaining the Stein/Wysession book. It is a lot more user friendly and application oriented. I used that book in a course the next semester on earthquake seismology and a lightbulb came on! I now understood better what Aki and Richards were talking about! I could go back to it as a reference to gain a deeper understanding. As they say, 'Quantitative Seismology' is the "bible" of the subject and so should be in your library. However, it is more of a reference for experienced users.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamental in a seismologist preparedness .......2005-07-01

Many descriptions in seismology requires a complete understanding of the theory that support the seismological phenomena. Quantitative Seismology shows you all the fundamental concepts and prepare you for more advanced developments. Its not an introductory textbook, you need a formal background in physics and mathematics. The preface in 1st edition begins: "Seismology has matured as a quantitative science... and several specialized journals recorded this progress...", with this book you'll not obtain only the essentials of this progress; also the essentials of an enjoyable, mature and complete science.

For reference the table of contents:

      1.- Introduction
2.- Basic Theorems in Dynamic Elasticity
      3.- Representation of Seismic Sources
4.- Elastic Waves from a point of Dislocation Source
5.- Plane Waves in Homogeneous Media and their Reflection and Transmission at a Plane Boundary

3 out of 5 stars A good second or third book.......2005-03-07

After writing my first review and getting some more experience, I decided to give this book a higher rating.
Among the seismology texts out there, few are as comprehensive in theory as Aki and Richards. They don't shy away from deriving or proving some important claims, which I like. As a former applied math student, I had a difficult time dealing with distribution-valued differential equations without seeing some justification for making sense out of the Green's functions. I STRONGLY recommend getting Aki and Richards WITH "Foundations of Applied Mathematics" by Greenberg. Aki and Richards is good to use with Peter Shearer's "Introduction to Seismology" and for an even MORE mathematical treatment than Aki and Richards, one could buy Jose Pujol's "Elastic Wave Propagation and Generation in Seismology." This text is not as comprehensive as Aki and Richards, but Pujol derives and proves nearly everything, leaving nothing unsupported.
In short, this book is almost a necessity for every seismologist, but don't use it as a first book.

4 out of 5 stars Fifth edition brings a good book up to date.......2006-12-19

"Earthquakes" by Bruce Bolt has been the classic textbook for many years for a non-technical discussion. The fifith edition properly orders the material, and tosses out some outdated material, on earthquake prediction and reservoir-induced seismicity, for example.

It is fairly clear, contains colorful stories from Bruce's decades as Director of the Berkeley Seismological Station, and has a firm scientific grounding. Reading it is no walk in the park, as befits a subject of moderate complexity, but neither is it a dark and stormy night. The accompanying web notes are sketchy, and I just noted some stale links.

This book is California-centric, Bob Yeats has a more Pacific Northwest-centric "Living with earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest", Brumbaugh's "Earthquakes - Science and Society" is more rudimentary in both graphics and prose, and Yanev's "Peace of mind in earthquake country" is more engineering oriented and has been out of print. Susan Hough's "Earthshaking Science" is better written but with far fewer graphics.

Reading this book remains the easiest way to understand earthquakes.

4 out of 5 stars Good update, but illustrations are better in 3rd ed........2001-09-07

Well, the title says it -- I'm keeping my copy of the 3rd edition because the illos in the latest edition look soft and disturbingly unsharp. Maybe the publisher, having lost the original artwork for the 3rd edition, simply scanned a copy. Or maybe the quality got skimped when the work was made all-electronic. I don't know.

In any case, the content is fine.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended: A very good book on Earthquakes........1999-10-11

This book provides a very good coverage on Earthquakes, from how and why they happen to their effects and safety concerns. You can learn about faults, plates, how earthquakes are sized, how much can be forecasted, how structures are affected, ground acceleration, soil conditions, etc. Though there are numerous examples from California, this is not one of those books which try to provide earthquake checklists to Californians. The level of technicality is one reason I recommend the book. You don't have to be a seismologist to understand the book, but you won't get bored if you are technically oriented. You will get a quantitative feel of concepts in addition to the clear explanations.

5 out of 5 stars The updated and expanded Fourth Edition just published.......1999-07-13

The new 4th edition has a new chapter on Plate Tectonics, recent earthquake descriptions, connections with Web pages, and colored illustrative plates.Fresh historical text has been included and more help with seismic safety.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one earthquake book, this should be the one........1998-12-02

I spent a lot of time searching for a book explaining earthquakes that wasn't too simple or a text book. Bolt's book is more toward the textbook end of the scale, but is still quite readable. This is not a simple "what to do" book but an explanation of how quakes happen, how they cause damage, what we can do, etc.

          Book Description

Learn to design code-compliant, earthquake-resistant structures with this practical guide

Earthquake Engineering demonstrates how to design structural members and joints for seismic resistance. The text guides readers through dozens of structural designs, documenting how to perform each step, make the necessary calculations, and adhere to relevant design codes. Most other texts on seismic design focus on theory and the construction of idealized structures; this text is a radical departure, presenting actual tested design methodologies that protect structures from the devastation of earthquakes.

All the design methods presented by the author comply with the current U.S. building codes. References to these codes are provided throughout the text, helping readers understand how they are integrated into an overall structural design.

Everything readers need to create sound designs, from analysis to design implementation, is provided, including:
          * Dozens of worked problems throughout the text
          * Complete reference chapters dedicated to matrices, differential equations, and numerical analysis
          * Latest results of ongoing seismic research, including how these studies are likely to influence future design projects
          * The latest 2006 IBC, highlighting significant variations from the 2000 and 2003 editions of the code
          * Detailed coverage of seismic design for steel moment-resisting frame structures (SMRF), as well as braced-frame steel, concrete, masonry, and wood-framed structures

This text, with its many worked problems, is ideal for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. Now that the seismic engineering provisions of the IBC Code apply to the entire United States, this text should also guide practicing engineers not yet exposed to seismic design in designing code-compliant, earthquake-resistant structures.
