An earlier comment reported, "it doesn't address theory of GIS programs in general that well, and I felt like my hand was being held a little too much in some things." I certainly agree. The book is simply a series of examples. The examples are repetitive in part. There is very little explanation. Using up 10 pages to demonstrate drag-and-drop functions is really not necessary.

Good preliminary to Mastering ArcGIS.......2007-06-30
We used Mastering ArcGIS in a GIS practicum course-dual level, and did 2 chapters a week including all exercises. I had had several GIS theory courses with a bit of GIS practice,and found it frustrating, although I got through it. I then decided to use the GIS Tutorial book to pick up some stuff I might not know, and to prevent me from forgetting it all over the summer. It would have been much better to use this book first--I have learned a lot I didn't know--then progress to the Mastering ArcGIS book. I admit I'm older than the average college student-we didn't even have calculators when I was a student the first time, so I didn't grow up with computers, but had one once they came out. If any professors are reading, use this book first for your GIS lab.

This is a great publication for beginning GIS users. It goes through each ArcView function in a step by step process with visual aids for each step so you know you are on the right track. The tutorial CD is very helpful too.

I originally purchased this book for a college class that I am taking. It is easy to follow and self-explanatory. It is so easy to use that you almost don't need a professor to teach you. This book is wonderful. Almost anyone could pick it up, install the software that comes with it and be using GIS in moments- with ease. This book will wt your appetite for what GIS is capable of doing. There seem to be no limits, just one's imagination.

If you're looking for a step-by-step-hold-your-hand-guide to ArcView then this is your book. However ...and this is a big However... you'd better learn each lesson thoroughly as you go along, because there is no index. Let me repeat... no index. Oh, sure there's pages and pages of ESRI software license agreement, but no index. That being said, it is a fine reference and a good place to learn the basics.

I just recieved the book, and it appears to be what I was looking for, but on Amazon.com it is listed as being over 400 pages. The book is only 335 pages with the last 100 pages being an appendix, glossary of terms, and an index. For the price of the book, the correct number of pages should be correct.

Last summer, when I was asked to present an "Advanced GIS" course for some of grad students in Geomatics, I was fortunate enough to find this book on my first round of serach. It is a great book with deep technical explanation of the subject and its applications. It is more a type of textbook than a book can be used by general public. However, public users may still find some chapters informative. I recommend this book as a grad textbook for those who need technical undetrstanding of spatial databases in GIS.

Very nicely written book. It is quite technical, with a very detailed and mathematically-oriented exposition. More suitable for a classroom teaching or for a GIS software developer/expert analyst than for the average user. Contains great chapters on representation of spatial objects and concepts, and computational geometry algorithms.
A must have for a GIS software developer or a GIS analyst trying to gain a deeper understanding of GIS database organization and optimal query algorithms. Too deep for beginners and occasional GIS users.

I have been in GIS and graphics research and development for more than 10 years. GIS is a area that is mixed with technical and management issues greatly; therefore, there is very few truly technical books that is focus on computing issues in GIS.
I am really excited to see this book because it compiles tons of research materials into 1 place. My 2 boxes full of research papers can go into basement while I am having this book as the constant reference. The book got a very coherent presentation of the large scale data management issues with GIS. Thier description is very accessible. They have tried their best to minimize the amount of mathematics that could be involved.
If you are a beginner, this is a definite starting point to learn about various techniques and issues about spatial data management and computing. I wish I have this book at the start of my career. Much of my headaches to run through all of those research papers can be eliminated.
If you want to implement a spatial data management system, this book alone is not enough. You may need to add few other graphics books and database books to acquire enough background to do so.
Well, you can only ask for so much coverage for a single book.

Other reviewers have done a good job of stating the flaws in this book. I'll also throw my vote in to say that this book is awful, hoping that people read these reviews when deciding whether to purchase the book. My opinion was so negative of this book, that I returned it for refund. The book is full of too many typos, incomplete code samples that won't run, and incomplete logic that it is essentially more confusing than helpful, in my opinion. Definitely not recommended.
If you want to learn to program ArcGIS, look for Robert Burke's book instead. It is a real winner.

In the introduction of this book it states that "you do not have to be a seasoned programmer to understand this book". Not true. Razavi's treatment of the subject is superficial, and does not cover the fundamental bases well enough to give beginning programmers what they need. If you do not know how to program in VBA before you read this book chances are you won't know how to after reading it. {This refers to the 1st (2002) edition.}
Thin and light.......2002-07-07
I too was disappointed with this book. There's not much substance here, especially if you already know a bit of VB/VBA programming. Half of the book reviews basic VB/COM concepts, syntax and programming practices. I bought this book because I already know VB and I am starting an ArcGIS programming project. I learned more looking at the ESRI provided samples and poking around their excellent support forum and sample code web site... Just by tinkering around with ArcGIS in the time it took for the book to arrive, I built sample applications that are way beyond those presented in Razavi's book.
The book doesn't really give you enough information to begin to grasp the ArcObjects data model. If you're going to do any serious ArcObjects programming, you'll need the ESRI reference book "Exploring ArcObjects" ... which is also included in electronic format on the ESRI CD's, but it's so big that the paper version is easier to use. {This refers to the 1st (2002) edition.}
Anticipation unrealized.......2002-06-25
Only one word I can think of to describe this latest offering from Razavi and OnWord Press: DISAPPOINTING.
I pre-ordered this book months ago because this topic is not covered by any other current books and Razavi's tome on ArcView programming is well written and informative. Unfortunately, he did not rise to the occasion in this instance. I received this book on a Monday and by Wednesday I was done reading it and ready to sell it off. First, the book is NOT 256 pages as the Amazon description says it is. At a scant 188 pages this ... "book" reads more like a pamphlet with a cursory introduction to the basics of programming that barely caters to ArcGIS specifically. When the book finally starts to get up and running with some useful coding examples (at page 80!), Bam!, it ends appruptly with no closing section, no advice for further research, no additional help tips. It almost seems as though the thing had to get off Razavi's desk to make it to the publisher so he just spit out the index and sent it off.
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. If you are just starting at programming the intro sections are far to shallow and brief to be any help. If you are working at a more advanced level and would like to cater your programming to ArcGIS you had better keep your dough and wait it out.
Unless half of my book got lost in the mail, this one is useless to those of us starving for a volume to fill the hole in programming this new software. {This refers to the 1st (2002) edition.}

Beginning MapServer should not be your only source of information on using MapServer. The book has a lot of usefull examples in it, but I am missing something. My main interest is on how to use MapServer through PHP /MapScript. In particlar I would like to know more on the bindings from PHP/MapScript to the object model in MapServer.
Do not expect the book to cover it all. It tries, but doesen't quite make it.
Still - buy it! You need it for your library, I am sure you do ;-)

The book is written in a very clear way and goes to the point explaining mapserver thru examples, it should be a reference book for those, that are starting with mapserver, but it lacks a proper cover of raster layers and WCS. Interresting is that the prefered database used, is not PosGIS but MySQL (normally MySQL is pushed aside by PostGIS in spatial databases projects) this was a pleasent surprise, since I normally use MySQL. The states manage to swim, fly, bike, and hitchhike their way home, and everyone goes to bed in the right place--even Kansas is happy to be home after such an adventure. This wacky, thoroughly engaging tale of mixed-up geography is a good bet for some awards. Perhaps best of all, the large format and riot of detail allow for plenty of amusing asides. Books that claim to "make geography fun" usually have to be taken with a dose of skepticism: so often, the teaching is there and the entertainment isn't. I bought this following a late night listmania search about 4 years ago. It is probably the best book I have ever bought my three boys! It is a great story, funny, and engaging all while they learn about the States. At age 5 my oldest could tell you where Washington was, whether it was East or West of the Mississippi and its surrounding neighbors. It is the best!

As a teacher, I'm always attracted to books that make learning fun, and this is one of the best! It's zany, off-the-wall and filled with oh, so many hilarious side comments made by the states who come alive. Younger tots love the colorful and silly illustrations, while older kids appreciate geography facts told in a most unique fashion. Check out the game inspired by the book - my own kids beg to play it!

As a teacher, it is difficult not to read this book to children. it is educational, fun, and they do remember their states after reading this book. Kids love to read it over and over.
My 8-year old son had a hard time returning this book to the library. He kept it with him for months and I had to return it after school ended so not to get "in trouble"
I do think all teachers should at least read it and use it to teach Social Studies. it is wonderful. After reading it, we made a game of finding the states and the kids loved it!!!

I am a grandmother who remembers way back.. when geography was important,
not only of the US, but of all countries around the globe. I can still probably tell you the capital of each country in South America, the
population, the imports and exports, and pertinent topography.
When I saw this book, I knew it was for my very bright and curious 8 year old grandson. He absolutely loves it, it is a fun and exciting way to know more about our country.

Just so you'd know, this book is not denouncing Togo. It is merely telling Balto's side of the story. And it is a courageous one taht deserves to be well-known. There.
One day, a serious diptheria epidemic breaks out in Nome. Sled dogs are selected to deliver serum to the town before time runs out. Will they succeed?
This compelling book tells the story of Balto's brave and graet contribution to this race (he never tried to claim all the credit!), and I would recommend it even to Leonhard Seppala, so he would stop despising Balto, but sadly, he is now dead.

If you love the Iditarod and you want your children (or children you're fond of) to be introduced to this great race, the story of Balto and the Great Race by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel is a good place to start, beginning with the cover illustration by Nora Köerber. This book is a Stepping Stones chapter book with black and white illustrations throughout.
At the beginning of the book is a map of Alaska showing the Iditarod railroad and dogsled trail, along with some illustrations depicting the basic story of this great race against time to get much-needed diphtheria serum to Nome in 1925.
Balto is a Siberian husky born to run, and to lead. He guided his musher, Gunnar Kaasen, into Nome on the final leg of the journey, when only this magnificent dog could sense the way through a terrible, deadly blizzard with no trail to follow and wind at such strength it tossed Kaasen and dogsled into the air, almost losing their precious cargo. A short time before this near disaster, Balto saved the team from going through the ice to certain death. His instincts were in the realm of the supernatural and his devotion to the task at hand human in awareness.
It states on the back cover that this book is for children in grades 1-3. As the Cleveland Museum of Natural History states on the same back cover, "Balto's story is one of courage, cooperation and inspiration, and personal sacrifice for the greater good."

We purchased this book after seeing the real Balto (courtesy of the art of taxidermy) at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Our quest in Northeast Ohio, where Balto enjoyed his senior years, was prompted by my seven year-old daughter's love-affair with the animated film about this dog, who navigated a lost sled team carrying life-saving medicine through Alaska in 1925. I hereby confess publicly that, after myself reading the book, which is aimed at the 9 year-old set, I cried, much as I had done 35 years before after reading "Lassie Come Home." This account, however, is much more compelling than "Lassie" or "Old Yeller," because it entirely factual (possibly excepting the subjective thoughts imputed to the protagonist).
The author did her homework researching this story about a sled dog who was just one of the pack facing poor odds against daunting weather and unrequiting expanses of blinding snow and ice. When the alpha dog loses the trail, and another refuses to lead, the team turns to Balto to bring them and their cargo safely to rest in Nome.
Perhaps Balto deserves an authentic, grown-up biography, but this one will serve in the meantime. It appears to be the definitive account.

This is an excellent book if you are interested in the Iditarod race in Alaska.The book helps young children understand the importance of perserverence and is a great introduction to history for the very young (6-8).A true story that inspires people to understand the bond between animals and people.

This book presents concepts of analyzing spatial patterns include mapping where things are, mapping the most and least, mapping density, finding what's inside, finding what's nearby, and mapping change. Some of the best sections were tables comparing methods, for example: comparing standard classification schemes, contrasting mapping density versus building a density surface, methods to determine if features are inside another and straight-line distance versus network versus surface distance methods of comparing distance. There was no discussion of systematically analyzing variability in geospatial data, which would be important in understanding statistical differences. The section on mapping change surprisingly stayed away from discussions of level of trend.
Although good on concepts, this does not mention the specific tool in ArcGis or the various extensions. I would have appreciated some cross-reference to specific ArcGIS tutorial or help on methods to do these.
Great place to begin.......2006-03-19
Some ESRI books are only extended marketing brochures. This is not. If you need a book that will help you understand GIS analysis, this is a great place. Mastering the techniques described in this book will cover 75% of the demands in the market. The book is referenced and so if you need more you can seek out the sources used to write the book.
This book is for GIS analysts, not for folks interested in building databases. This is an essential reference for GIS analysts. that is heavily booked marked and sits on the self near my desk so I can refer to it. It is useful for people starting out and experienced GIS users.
It is weak on network analysis and remote sensing. So look elsewhere for that.
A Great Starting Point.......2002-08-30
You have to take this book for what it is. An extremely basic, starting point for any would-be GIS Analyst. The book contains wonderful examples of how one may use GIS to analyze "real world problems" using both raster and vector models. This book in essence shows people how GIS can be used to analyze problems, without specifically showing them how to analyze problems. I would recommend this book for people who are new to GIS analysis and IT managers who's departments use GIS. While this book will not demonstrate how GIS problems are solved, it illustrates what kinds of problems can be solved using a GIS, any GIS. This book, although it is published by a software company, is not a software manual by any stretch of the imagination (and it was not intended to be one). The examples can be replicated on any commercially available GIS package.
Note: Do not buy this book if you are an advanced GIS user, you probably already know most of what is contained in the book.
Good 2nd Book for GIS beginners.......2000-04-20
After reading "GIS for Everyone", which shows you how to do some basic things with GIS, this book shows you what to do. There's an ample supply of examples in this book, although somewhat repetative. The extensive use of color was surprising given the relatively low cost of this book compared to similar titles. Some of the GIS images are quite small and a small reading magnifier will help seeing the differences that, for example, changes in cell size can make in GIS images.
This book helps you make the transition from making maps to doing GIS analysis.
call it GIS Analysis for dummies.......1999-12-07
while it doesn't get into specifics about actually using any GIS software, this book explains in layman's terms the basics of spatial relationships. if you're ready to start getting beyond just making maps with GIS, this is an excellent place to start.
