great for preschool & art projects.......2007-07-13
This is a great book for pre-school age kids. It's a simple story with lots of opportunities for the kids to participate, saying what each picture is. I know a lot of teachers use this book and then have the kids make their own "ink blot" type images and then say what they see in their cloud. Very cute book.
good book.......2007-05-20
Great book for teaching shapes and cloud, fun to read with felt board activity.
Replace that TV!.......2007-05-14
Tell the children to turn off the TV and read this book. It just begs them to try their hand at making some "spilled milk" with blue construction paper and cotton balls or ripped white paper. Parents and grown-ups are allowed to make designs, too (They will want to do it!).
child book.......2007-05-08
My son at 13 months was introduced to this book at storytime at the local library. It was a hit at storytime and continues to be a hit at our house. My son has learned sign language and this book reinforces all of his animal signs. It is a great classic book.
cute book.......2006-11-09
I remember this book being read to us way back in first grade. After the book was finished, we were given sheets of white paper and told to rip it(no scissors!) into shapes of 'spilled milk' to glue onto a darker piece of paper.

In this book, Dr. Henry Cloud gets to the heart of the issues dating raises for many readers and gets them on the road to fun and fulfillment in the single life.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books on christian dating that i have read..........2007-04-11
Kudos to Cloud and Townsend...again. I have read a lot of "christian" books on relationships (like Lady in Waiting and I Kissed Dating Goodbye) and dating this one seems to be one of the best that i have read. They encourage people to focus on their own behaviors and attitudes about dating that may be defeatest. I also appreciate how they focus on viewing dating as a time to just get to know people. There is too much of a mentality on making sure that you are dating someone you could see yourself marrying in a lot of Christian literature instead of viewing datitng as a time to just really get to know someone. I also like how they don't antigonize the idea of dating nonchristians because while I think that finding another Christian to be involved with would be most ideal, some of the things i find attractive are not the type of things that the average church going man would be like. (My politics are too liberal and I encourage free thinking) There really is a difference between being willing to date someone and being willing to marry them. I know of a few people who could benefit from reading this book because of how they beleive that God will send someone in their paths but they do not take any responsibility for trying to meet people themselves.
great basic dating advice but serious bugs in the system.......2007-04-07
Let me explain the way I date according to the book How to Find a Date worth Keeping. I have relatively recently changed somewhat the style of dating because of reading this book as well as Boundaries and Boundaries in Dating. Also,a visit to a Christian counselor to some extent and the book Safe People had some influence too.
Because of what I've learned about human nature (as well as super nature), there is a need to establish that the one you are with is able to delay gratification long enough to separate lust from love so that both people can objectively learn about each other. This takes a time period much longer than the traditional length of time to accomplish. Cloud and Townsend (the authors) suggest that anything less than a year is probably too soon to be talking about a truly committed relationship. They go on to say that 2 to 3 years is not an unreasonable time. They also say that it depends a bit on individual pace.
I used to focus on one woman at a time in the traditional way of dating until she or I decided we were no longer compatible, then move on or decide on being "friends". Now I casually date for a much longer period, dating a few women concurrently, to see which of those can hang in there with me in order to really get to know me, among other reasons.
(I'll stop here to clarify a definition. I think our world has two meanings for "casual dating" One meaning is as I have used it above - dating to get to know someone keeping the boundaries of physical interaction at a bare minimum initially.
The second meaning is quite the opposite and that is >>go out/have sex/repeat with different partner with a cavalier attitude.
When I use this term "casual dating" I'm using the first definition always.)
This requires that, in order to be most efficient - especially at my age, I need to "casually date" as many women as I can at first, maintaining boundaries, keeping it light until a couple of the most compatible ones rise to the surface as prime choices. Then after about 6 months to a year (a somewhat arbitrary figure up to each individual), chose and then declare exclusivity. After exclusivity is when you dig the deepest before making the official move toward marriage.
There, now that I've outlined the basic premise behind the book, let me tell you both what I like about it and what I don't like.
What I don't like
1. This style, by design, automatically all but eliminates potential mates that do not adopt this style for themselves.
For instance, if I'm am bent on dating in the traditional manner, I will likely break anything off within the first, what?, month or two right? Because in our world that is the accepted norm - acquaintance to acceptance in a relatively short time. This limits the potential "pool" of candidates based merely on the style (pace) of dating.
2. There is an intrinsic time problem with moving slowly with many candidates. Even if you are on the same style page you still have to be hooked up on a more or less parallel time continuum in order to be at the same point relationally.
For instance, if I'm at a "near exclusive" stage with woman "A" but just starting out getting to know woman "B", then I either have to slow the one relationship way down or speed the other up or just write off one in favor of the other.
3. The author actually suggests going out with people that are not Christians because "the object of dating is not to get married" I disagree.
Technically, he's right, the object at first is not to get married. But I think when I pray to God the prayer "...and lead us not into temptation.." I have a moral obligation as a mortal creature not to lead myself into temptation either.
4.There needs to be an allowance for both relational maturity and age (not the same). People further along in life should, as a whole, have more experience and therefore require less time to winnow out a suitable mate. Also, someone middle aged is less inclined to chew up 18 months or more courting than a twenty year old, simply due to logistics (remaining years).
What I like
1. The main reason I like this method is that it takes the pressure off the first few dates and it gives you time to assess a person based on objective data without simply giving lip service to the expression, "No expectations". There is less room to slouch toward promiscuity.
2. It all but eliminates that obsessive and/or lonely feeling in between dates that is, in itself emotionally and mentally limiting, distracting, and potentially damaging. It more easily allows you to maintain your boundaries.
3. It's efficient. More potential candidates mean more people to choose from (in a shorter amount of time if you're assertive) and therefore it betters your chance at connecting with a truly compatible mate.
4. In the long run, after you and your mate have selected each other you can truly be assured that you were selected from a pool of many many potential suitors and therefore the love connection will be objectively more concrete - not just based on a feeling (not to minimize feelings either). Because you've done your homework the "in love" feeling reaches more of your senses - you become sensual to the nth degree.
5. The very nature of this method requires that both participants model brutal honesty with each other from the beginning - a characteristic that is an essential building block to the health of any committed relationship.
Over all I would recommend reading this book because it's basic message is so needed in our society. Just keep an open mind and customize it to your own age and lifestyle.
Such insight.......2006-10-28
I must honestly say that this book revolutionized my outlook on dating. Unlike other books written about dating by Christian authors, Cloud acknowledges the workings of the human mind throughout the book, a true benefit of his psychological knowledge. He raises all completely valid points, the most eye-opening of which for me was, an analogy of Tiger Woods. It read something to the effect of, "Tiger Woods had the goal of winning more major tournaments than any golfer in history. What if he would have said, 'The only tournaments I will play in will be major tournaments'? That's absurd. So why do people insist on dating only people they see themselves marrying?" That really hit home for me, because for so long I fell into the trap of thinking that dating is about marriage, when Cloud points out that it is about meeting new and interesting people, having fun, and learning much more about yourself in the unique environment which dating alone can provide. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for any single person, Christian or not.
Unlike a lot of other dating books I've read, Cloud's philosophies actually make logical and practical sense versus those of other authors (ie: "I Kissed Dating Goodbye"). I really cannot say enough good about this book, nor adequately summarize the profound truths therein. It is an easy read, entertaining, and eye-opening. You will not regret taking the time to read this book.
Good Book/Not so good Book~Still love the authors though!.......2006-08-20
I've read many of the New Life Guys' books and they have been a big part of my own growth in the past several years.
This book, however, wasn't one of the best and quite frankly, even though everyone seems to sing its praises, I don't think MOST single Christians really think about the implications behind the basic concepts of the book.
Of course as a leader of a singles ministry I wholly affirm Cloud's idea of contentedness in Jesus FIRST,(Matthew 6:33 ('seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added unto you'), that of course you can't stay in your home & wait for the fedex man, that your traffic patterns must be changed, that internet dating for many people is the way to go, etc....
I, too, can be a disgruntled single Christian woman wondering where all the decent, Christlike single men are! LOL. I also feel for the Christian men who feel the same way...
BUT I can't help but wonder what Jesus would tell us (since the Bible never clearly addresses the issue of 'dating' in itself) about all this 'casual' dating, breaking hearts, giving others the wrong idea, and generally treating dating so lightly. So, can't we just call it... FRIENDING?? or building strong friendships that would LEAD to dating relationships??
It takes a very strong grounded, emotionally mature individual to be able to be clear on what their expectations are of a person in a dating relationship. For many of us, that doesn't happen overnight and we need a supportive community around us to help build us up--because like it or night, MOST NOT ALL of us fall into the prey as opposed to predator category, follower not leader.
Do you know of a single Christian who is willing to wait for the best God has for them? OR are they all very anxious to date and be married and have kids, no matter what the cost?
Not to mention, WHY would Cloud (still dig ya!)even suggest dating someone who's not living for Christ? Again, in my experience, why risk it? Why risk becoming involved/attracted to someone who can weigh you down spiritually? Believe me, IT WILL. It did for me. Several times!
Heck, even Solomon experienced this: "Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father." (I Kings 11:1-4)
Our world, and even many of our churches, say that having a romantic love in our lives is a must, even if the "pickings" are slim. Wisdom says that we reserve the affections of our heart only for one whose commitment to the Lord and keeping His Word matches our own.
Sound hardcore? Here's hard core: Try long-term relationships w/someone not with you in your JC faith walk who you hope will become spiritually stronger. THAT'll mess you up.
All I'm sayin is don't settle. God has your moves covered when you honor him. The book has some good basic concepts. Definitely don't expect that he will bring the person to your doorstep or exterminating your house from termites. But don't treat 'dating' so lightly either.
However, BIG kudos to the chapter "Where's the Testosterone". Great assessment on how God has designed men to initiate, pursue, protect, provide, etc. God has wonderfully and inherently designed us females to respond to that. "Women want a man who is strong and assertive, but who use that assertiveness in service to the relationship" Good point, Dr. Cloud. Very cool!
Wow ... Permission to Go on an Endless Dating Bonanza.......2006-07-15
I loved this book! My girlfriend gave it to me on Valentine's Day and wow ... it was brilliant! Values-oriented dating is wonderful and there truly are plenty of fish out there - just go on the site. Honestly... dating that is light and innocent and with these principles in mind can be a positive learning experience. Stay true to your values and never settle.

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
This unabridged audio version of the Gold Medallion Award winning book presents a biblical treatment of boundaries, identifies how boundaries are developed, and how they become injured. It also shows Christian misconceptions of the function and purpose of boundaries and provides a program for developing and maintaining healthy limits. Read by Dick Fredricks. 10 CDs; running time 11 hours 40 minutes.
Customer Reviews:
Read this book, save your marriage, friendships, and self-esteem.......2007-10-07
Few things cause as much grief and heartache in relationships as the failure to establish healthy interpersonal "rules of conduct." This book is perhaps the best and most important read on that subject. James Dobson says that most breakups are due to disrespect. This book is about establishing respect, both for oneself and within relationships. A lot of psychological dysfunction and pain is caused by others trampling on a person's life, self-respect, and dignity. This book will show you how to lovingly establish healthy conduct in all of your relationships. It will save many friendships and even marriages if read, used, and thoughtfully applied to a person's life.
Beware iPod Users.......2007-09-28
The content of this set of 10 CDs is wonderful!! The problem is that each disk has between 45 and 70 tracks which are titled: Track 1, Track 2, etc. So... when you download them to your iPod, they get sorted alphabetically and you get Track 1 (from disk 1), Track 1 (from disk 2), etc. You have to either download one CD at a time, or rename all the tracks. It was very time consuming and disappointing not to have all I wanted in an organized way to download to my iPod. Just be aware when you buy these CDs.
Itty bitty book .......2007-09-28
Got to have good eyes to see the print.
My bad... did not realize it was a Brief on the Large one.
Makes a nice little accessory sitting next to Librarian Barbie... makes her look so smart.

Great Condensed Version.......2007-09-27
Mistakenly I ordered this book thinking it was the "real" book that had been recommended for us in class, several people have recommened it to me and I have recommended it to people every day...It's really been neat to share with others who are not going to read the "real" version. The people that have recommended it to me have laughed when they saw how small it is and even a child asked me to read this to her thinking it was a child's book....I really must get the original version. The small condensed version was great, fantastic, awesome for anyone to read. Please read if you are married, not married, in ANY kind of relationship with ANYONE...

In another wondrous, wordless picture book by Caldecott Medal winner David Wiesner (Tuesday and June 29, 1999), a class visiting the Empire State Building finds complete cloud cover and no visibility. One boy makes friends with a cloud (identifiable in the mists by the red mittens, hat, and scarf and swipes from the boy), and goes AWOL on a wonderful adventure. The cloud whisks him away to the "Sector 7" floating cloud factory, a bizarre sky station that looks like a Victorian design for a submarine.
Hiding behind his new cumulonimbus friend, the boy enters an area resembling Grand Central Station (complete with "Arrivals" and "Departures" boards) and watches officious human types in uniform giving the clouds their weather assignments. When the clouds complain to the boy that their assigned shapes are boring, he, a talented artist, creates new blueprints for them. The stuffy grownups are furious when clouds start emerging in the shape of fantastic fish; they shout at the clouds, tear up the new designs, and escort the boy back to his school group. But the revolt of the clouds is unstoppable now, and in the last few pages the skies over Manhattan suddenly get a lot more interesting. (Click to see a sample spread. Copyright 1999 by David Wiesner. With permission of Clarion Books.) (Ages 2 to 8) --Richard Farr
Book Description
Only the person who gave us Tuesday could have devised this fantastic tale, which begins with a school trip to the Empire State Building. There a boy makes friends with a mischievous little cloud, who whisks him away to the Cloud Dispatch Center for Sector 7 (the region that includes New York City). The clouds are bored with their everyday shapes, so the boy obligingly starts to sketch some new ones. . . . The wordless yet eloquent account of this unparalleled adventure is a funny, touching story about art, friendship, and the weather, as well as a visual tour de force.

Escher and imagination.......2007-08-05
Flotsam and Freefall were the first two books I explored by David Wiesner. Sector 7 is not to be missed either. Wiesner's style and creativity are wonderful explorations for all humans(and especially children). M.C. Escher has an honored presence in this book, as he does in Freefall. The theme of flying is present here, as in all of Wiesner's books, and the fanciful creative nature of Wiesner's story and illustrations (paintings?) are not to be missed. Second language learners will immediately have something to say (in their own language) about this book. So will everyone else who reads it. Anyone who has taken the time to sit back and enjoy the show clouds put on will appreciate the ideas within this book. Don't hesitate!
Worlds Above the Rest.......2007-05-07
Wiesner, D. (1999). Sector 7. New York: Clarion Books.
Synopsis: Cloud watching on a lazy day while lying in the grass, is a fun summertime activity for adults and children of all ages. But how are these clouds formed? Who created them? David Wiesner amazes readers once again with another wordless book that tells the incredible adventure of a young boy who goes on a field trip to the Empire State Building. The imaginative and creative young boy yearns to express his creativity meanwhile he is approached by a friendly cloud that takes for a tour of Sector 7 where clouds are created for this portion New York City. Sector 7 resembles an old train station with departure and arrival times posted which provide clouds with their assigned locations. The boy encounters clouds that are bored with their usual shapes. With a wild imagination and skilled artistry, he designs inspiring shapes that excite the clouds. When the staff discovers the changes, they are perturbed by the clouds that stray from their usual and regimented routines. The boy is sent back to his class field trip. However there is no undoing the chaos he has created which begins to spread out across Sector 7.
Evaluation: David Wiesner's Caldecott Honor award winning book allows readers to create the text and interpretations within their minds. Wiesner's wordless tale captures your mind with its full page watercolor illustrations and story board formatted frames. The vivid, yet soft watercolor illustrations provide humor combined with elegance. Readers can create their own individual stories based on their personal experiences. The main character is wildly imaginative with a talent for skilled artistry. Wiesner's tale leaves readers wondering if there are depots like Sector 7 where imaginative clouds are created. Educators will find that this tale allows children to create their own words to this magical adventure. It will encourage struggling writers to utilize their imaginations and picture themselves in the boy's position and be able to write a terrific tale of visiting the place where clouds are made. Children ages 6-10 will love this enchanting journey.
I'm a big fan........2007-02-25
I loved the art in this book. A great story told through pictures.
fun and imaginative!.......2006-11-07
My 5 year old loves this book and wants to read it a couple of times a week. He always asks new questions as he points out things he hadn't discovered last time. Even telling this story (since there are no words) changes each time as you(as the reader) will surely discover more things as well.

Got My Daughter Interested in Reading Again.......2007-05-07
We've been struggling for a way to get my daughter to read now that she's run out of Junie B. Jones books. The Weather Fairies books have done the trick. She seems to enjoy reading again for the first time in half a year or more.
I have to say I haven't read any of the Weather Fairies myself but I caught my twelve-year-old son reading the series because his sister had obviously liked it. He said he wanted to read more, too.
pearl the cloud fairy.......2007-01-12
great imaginative series with descriptive words that my little girl loved. it can get a bit repetitive as they repeat the main premise in each book of the group in case someone hasnt read the last one...
all in all, she couldnt wait for the next fairy book to come out!
hits all the right buttons.

"God can be loved but he cannot be thought. He can be grasped by love but never by concepts. So less thinking and more loving."
This is William Johnston's summary of the message of The Cloud of Unknowing. Nobody knows who wrote the book, or exactly where he lived, or whether he was a member of a religious order, or even, really, whether he was part of any church at all. The text first appeared in Middle English in the 14th century, and it has inspired generations of mystical searchers (from St. John of the Cross to Teilhard de Chardin). The mysterious conditions of its composition, however, focus the reader's attention squarely on the book's message--an almost Zen rendering of Christianity, which has a great deal to teach our querulous, doctrine-obsessed churches: "And so I urge you," the author writes, "go after experience rather than knowledge. On account of pride, knowledge may often deceive you, but this gentle, loving affection will not deceive you. Knowledge tends to breed conceit, but love builds. Knowledge is full of labor, but love, full of rest." --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
William Johnston--an authority on fourteenth century spirituality and specifically on the writings of this unknown author--provides a substantive and accessible introduction detailing what is known about the history of this text and its relevance throughout the ages. Also included here is the author's other principal work, The Book of Privy Counseling--a short and moving text on the way to enlightenment through a total loss of self and consciousness only of the divine.

A TRUE WAY TO ENCOUNTER WITH GOD.......2007-06-27
This is a most compelling and etheral writing! Not for all folks, however is immensely gripping.
No reason to read this book........2006-03-05
There is no reason to read The Cloud in translation. It is written in simple prose and in one of the easiest Middle English dialects for Modern English speakers to read. This edition of the book is an unnecessary translation into Modern English in which a great deal of the original works subtleties and nuances are lost. Because the text was written with such close attention to language it is truly inexcusable for any one to read it in translation when then original is completely accessible to the Modern English speaker. I therefore recommend the edition the TEAMS Middle English Texts Series, edited by Patrick J. Gallacher and available for roughly the same price, instead of this version.
Less thinking + more loving = at-one-ment with God.......2006-01-27
My understanding and practice of contemplative prayer is that it cannot be forced or willed; it is God's gift. In this state, one transcends words, thoughts and images to enter a state of oneness with God. It silences the noises of daily life, revealing an awareness of God's love which both humbles and exalts. To that end, this 14th century book on the nature of apophatic (mystical) prayer also provides modern audiences with an understanding of the foundation of "centering prayer".
As a practitioner of lectio divinia and contemplative prayer, I found that over time, *The Cloud* enriched my relationship with God. However, it took some time; I wasn't ready when I first tried to read and absorb it. But with daily prayer, a grounding in the works of others (eg; Desert Fathers, Augustine, John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, T. Merton, etc.) and spiritual growth, it took root. This is just my experience, but one which echoes the comment of reviewer RKirkham, "Study without prayer is flat; prayer without study leads to error."
If you're not sure this is the book for you, sample this excellent translation by Evelyn Underhill online @

A must read for those who are niether dualists or nondualists.......2005-10-02
Great book. Brings allot of advaita Vedanta and western religion/theology together.
Not for the Faint of Heart..........2005-07-30
I've been told that brevity is golden so I'll keep this short. "The Cloud..." is among the greatest classics of Christian mysticism available. As a Novice Benedictine it was required reading; as one Professed it was Lectio Divina; and as a man before God it is a hope.
I hope this helps. Be.

From the time he was a small puff, the cloud protagonist of Christoph Niemann's The Police Cloud has dreamed of becoming a police officer. With some pull from a helicopter friend, the cloud gets his wish and dons the coveted big blue hat. He starts his first day of work with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, some folks just aren't cut out to be defenders of the law. The well-meaning clouds blunders one assignment after another, obscuring the vision and light of everyone he tries to help. Alas! Is there no profession just right for this good-hearted cloud?
In his first picture book, New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, and New York Times illustrator Christoph Niemann captures the oh-so-ardent wish power of childhood, and sweetly demonstrates the fact that although everyone can't do everything, everyone can do something. Niemann's bold, striking illustrations will appeal to readers of all ages, especially the very youngest. --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
In this funny and tender picture book for the youngest child, a fluffy cloud gets a job (with the help of his friend the police helicopter) as a police officer. But no matter how hard he tries, the qualities that make him a cloud seem to get in the way of his duties. He blocks the sun at the park instead of helping people and obscures traffic at an intersection instead of directing it. Upset, the cloud starts to cry. And it's his streaming tears—which inadvertently put out a fire in a burning building—that lead him to his true calling in life: as a firefighter!

sweet book with great illustrations.......2007-08-07
Police Cloud is a sweet book with fantastic colors and pictures. Both boys and girls will love this book. The cloud's friend, helicopter, helps get him a job as a police cloud- his dream come true. He tries and tries, but realizes he's not cut out for the job. His true calling is revealed at the end of the book and kids can't help but cheer for him.
Between the pictures and plot, you will not tire of reading this cute story.
Great Illustrations.......2007-05-07
My 4 year old loves the story about the cloud who wants to be a police officer. He especially likes when the cars crash because the cloud blocks everybody's field of vision (typical boy). It did take a couple of readings for him to grasp why the cloud was not successful as a police officer, but he was readily able to understand why being a fireman was a much better alternative.

a book both you and your little ones will love!.......2007-03-13
THE POLICE CLOUD is a huge hit in our house, we've been reading it almost every night and for at least 10 minutes at a pop, pretty amazing considering the typical attention span of a not-quite two year old. And unlike my son's previous favorite, a book of cars/trucks/boats/etc which I finally had to hide because I couldn't stand having to read it night after night after night, I highly recommend this one as a book both kids AND parents will enjoy!
It's so charming, sweet and smart and full of great details both visual -- the illustration of the angry parkgoers makes me laugh out loud every time -- and in the writing itself. My son loves pointing out the cloud's police hat, the helicopter, the part where the thief gets away (he yells "stop!" and points his finger at the burglar), the crash at the intersection ("oh no!"), the part where the cloud gets sad ("cloud crying!"), of course the arrival of the fire truck, and then the ending, with the smiling cloud ("cloud happy!"). He even loves the back cover, which he keeps flipping upside down (to make the overturned truck become right side up) and back again, over and over and over, laughing and exclaiming all the while. He is smitten, and so am I.
This is our new favorite, hands down, and will be our standard birthday party gift for the under six set for a while to come.

A lovely way to learn about clouds.......2007-09-18
My 8 year old enjoyed reading this book and read it with ease. It was entertaining and very informative.
Educational And Funny. .......2006-12-06
Any book by Tomie dePaola is a hit. He is an excellent illustrator. It is an educational book that provides nicknames of clouds and explains the various types of clouds and what they do. My children enjoyed this book and read it many times over and used it to identify different types of clouds they saw in the sky. The illustrations help them identify the clouds they see too.
Informative, yet funny.......2005-04-29
The Cloud Book is an informative book about clouds, which can be used to integrate reading and science. In this book, the author uses funny illustrations to introduce types of clouds, along with their specific characteristics. The book also includes an index, so that the reader can look for a particular cloud. Also included are different culture's views on clouds and their meanings.
The facts presented correspond with information that is deemed scientifically correct, but the author does not cite a source. The information is up-to-date, and the illustrations do not look dated. There is a clear distinction between scientific fact and the theories of different people groups.
The information is structured well. The book explains how clouds are formed, then examines each cloud type and its characteristics. Each cloud type is compared to objects that are easily identifiable. The index, which lists the cloud types in alphabetical order, is very helpful.
The illustrations, along with the text, intertwine fact with humor. The cartoon style lends itself to exaggeration. The style of the text is also comical. It is clearly for younger children, but an adult reader would also enjoy reading this aloud. The author also illustrates idioms about fog and clouds, painting a humorous view of the English language. The book is concluded with a "Very Silly Cloud Story," which is nonsensical.
Classroom Activity: After completing the story, the students will make cloud journals, in which they will chart clouds for an entire week. Students will write about cloud types, cloud shapes, questions about clouds and other observations.
Age Group: This book can be read aloud to 2nd through 3rd graders, with independent reading recommended for 4th graders.
The Cloud Book.......2003-03-12
The Cloud Book is a great book for the curious little scientists or meterologists in your home. To tell you the truth, I thought that this book would be boring. Who wants to read a book about clouds out of science class? But, this book came a surprise to me. It explained clouds in a fun way, making you want to learn about them. The illustrations and metaphors help you understand, while teaching you about them at the same time. The illustrations help you relate everyday objects to those confusing scientific words. Only Tomie de Paola could compare the cumulus clouds with a cauliflower or the cirrus cloud with mare's tails. He also tells folk tales and legends that go along with the clouds. This book is a must on the bookshelf of any future meterologist!
Another hit!.......2001-02-05
What more do you need to say? It's a Tomie de Paola book. He's definitely one of the better writers/illustrators out there. "The Cloud Book" is a good, first introduction to the science behind clouds while at the same time entertaining the children. Teachers and parents should buy this book!
Book Description
1. Figure out which way the wind is blowing. 2. Look at the clouds overhead. 3. Match the clouds you see with one of the full-color cloud photographs in "The Weather Wizard's Cloud Book," and the caption beneath the photograph will tell you what kind of weather to expect. With amazing accuracy, this simple system can account for swiftly changing local weather developments more effectively than weather maps or official area forecasts, which are issued well in advance of weather conditions.

Superb, portable, and incomplete.......2007-05-17
I bought this book in preparation for an advanced mariner's meteorology course, and could not have made this comment without having first gained that higher level of knowledge.
This is a suberb book with two major flaws:
1) It sticks to the two-dimensional depiction of weather that is common to the average person. Although there are a couple of illustrations showing altitude, the author could easily have put in a few pages on the rotation of the earth, the 500 mb level, and how weather on the surface cannot be understood without underestanding what is happening at the 18,000 level. As my instructor put it, the high-level troughs are the chicken that hatches the surface level (scrambled) egg.
2) It provides the pictures of the clouds, but missed the key chance to break down the names into the original latin meanings, to create a matrix of high (Cirro), medium (alto), and low (strato), with substantive meaning including layer (stratus), curly (cirrus), stacked in a vertical heap (cumulo-cumulus), and delivering rain (nimbus).
Add this little matrix above, and read "Mariner's Guide to the 500-Millibar Chart" by Joe Stenkiewicz and Lee Chesneau, and Google for
to find his web site, and you'll have all you need to move to the better three-dimensional interactive viewing of weather and weather charts.
I also recommend Understanding Weatherfax
A good little book.......2007-03-15
A very handy book for "instant" weather forcasting. Interesting to read and written with a bit of humor. The only shortcoming is the arrangment of the photographs of the different clouds, they are not in logical sequence.
for newbies to weather .......2006-06-27
OK book for newbies or beginners to this interesting hobby(uninteresting if in Michigan)
Small Gem of a Book..........2006-06-18
This small hard to find book (unless you order it online) starts with a basic premise: to predict the weather you need to do 2 things-determine the direction of the wind and identify the clouds currently in the sky. That being said, I would consider this book a great primer for anyone interested in naked eye weather forecasting.
The book includes color cloud charts, discusses weather folklore, precipitation, warm and cold fronts, and volcanic eruptions.
This a general primer. The information is not spoon fed to the reader.
The strength of this approach is Rubin's writing is entertaining and lively, and will enourage you to not only make your own weather predictions, but to also seek more information outside the scope of the book.
The weakness is that some of the material is incomplete. The book was completed by Louis Rubin's children with the help of a meteorologist after Rubin passed away (based on the Introduction), using Rubin's cloud photo collections and his collected writings.
As a result, some of the material is incomplete. For example, Rubin describes the 4 types of clouds and the 10 specific clouds most associated with weather changes. You then have to search all over the book to find those 10 clouds, and even then, you're not sure (based on the prefixed names) if you're looking at the right photographs. I suspect at the time of his passing, Rubin's cloud photo collection was far from complete.
That being said, I still liked the book, consider it a keeper, and respect Rubin's work in this area as an amateur meteorologist.
Great Book.......2005-09-13
If your into forcasting weather, or just want to know how to, this book is for you.

Storm Watcher.......2007-03-20
I just received Cloud Watcher and haven't started it yet. If it is anything like her first 2 of the series it has to be great. The Watchers are yummy and the heroines are very independent and show a lot of courage. I have also enjoyed her Society series and am looking forward to more of them. I have introduced my 3 daughters to Ms. Saintcrow and they have enjoyed her too.
Please keep up the fantastic work and look forward to many more to come.

Missing something..........2007-02-08
I recently stumbled upon this author when I was in my local bookstore. This series has been amazing so far, but this book seemed to be missing something that the other three books had. Don't get me wrong, I still highly enjoyed the story, but the vibe was off.
Ms. Saintcrow is a master of urban fantasy...........2006-12-30
Anya Harris has been fleeing from city to city, trying to avoid the Dark that wants to destroy her. Anya is a Lightbringer but is unaware of her heritage. She only knows she has the talent of Persuasion. Accompanied by Shell Garritson, she arrives in Santiago City to find a haven among the three Guardians (see DARK WATCHER, STORM WATCHER, and FIRE WATCHER for their stories) only to meet Watcher Jack Gray. Jack knows instantly that he's found his witch in Anya, the only Lightbringer whose touch doesn't hurt him, but he has a dark secret. Will his secret destroy them as the Brotherhood once again threatens the sanctuary of Santiago City?
CLOUD WATCHER is the fourth book in the phenomenal series about the Watchers and the Lightbringers and continues the same excellence exhibited in all three previous books. While CLOUD WATCHER contains enough information to be a stand alone novel, readers will appreciate the world Ms. Saintcrow has created far more if the series is read in order.
Lilith Saintcrow is without a doubt one of the top writers of urban fantasy today. Her crisp prose and taut plotlines are carefully crafted for maximum impact. Her vividly drawn characters are so realistic this reviewer feels as if she is visiting old friends whenever characters from previous books reappear. Jack is perhaps the darkest character yet in this series, as his secret is a horrible one. However, Ms. Saintcrow uses his love and caring for Anya to allow the goodness that is his core to shine through.
CLOUD WATCHER is a spectacular addition to the Watcher series. Readers are in for a treat with this one as Lilith Saintcrow produces yet another superb story. Lilith Saintcrow truly is a master in the urban fantasy genre!

excellent romantic fantasy .......2006-12-24
Anya Harris feels all alone in the world as she flees the Dark fires that no one else seems to see. Her only companion as she runs from "the persuasion" is Shell, who depends on her for his well-being as he apparently is a "downs syndrome" person.
In Santiago City, she knows she needs a job that will enable her to also keep Shell safe. Instead she meets Watcher Jack Gray, whose centuries of dedication to Circle Lightfall may not redeem him for the atrocities he committed. Jack realizes she is the witch who he has waited seemingly forever to come into his life. He must protect her and her ward with his heart and soul as the Dark has followed her here. Used to having no one protect her back or someone steal her heart, Anya rejects his efforts to keep her safe; still her presence gives him some hope of redemption for the evil he did before he became a Watcher.
The Lilith Saintcrow "Watcher' romantic fantasy (see DARK WATCHER, STORM WATCHER, and FIRE WATCHER) is a terrific tale starring two interesting protagonists. Anya trusts no on except Shell who is almost totally dependent on her. Jack has waited forever for his soulmate to bewitch him so has begun to lose faith that he will ever meet her. When they do meet both are stunned, but he knows he first needs to keep her safe because her skills make her special and worth millions, but to do that he also must protect Shell. CLOUD WATCHER is a strong entry in a terrific series.
Harriet Klausner
Fourth book in the Watcher series.......2006-11-17
I have enjoyed all the other books in this series and this one is no different. I liked the idea of a woman who doesn't know she is a witch and because of the things she sees she doubts her sanity.
Anya is running before the fires of the Dark. She does not know she is a witch and she is afraid of what she calls "the persuation". Somewhere along the way she has picked up an older boy, Shell, with what sounds like "downs syndrome". She takes care of Shell and he depends on her. They barely escaped the last time. With very little money or possessions she needs a job. Preferrably somewhere she will still be able to keep an eye on Shell.
Jack Gray is one of the oldest Watchers. He has never found his witch in all these many years and he doubts he ever will. Even if he does, his burden of guilt, tells him she will never accept him. He hopes that the hundreds of yrs he has served Circle Lightfall, many give him some hope of redemption for the evil he did before he became a Watcher.
We learn more about the Watchers and about the beginnings of Circle Lightfall and the Crusade. Although her devotion to Shell is admirable, we also see his need to have and control Anya. Anya has had no help and protection, she has had to fight the Dark alone for too long. She has troubling accepting Jack, for who and what he is. She also has trouble accepting who and what she is.
The Dark has chased her here, and now she is vulnerable to their intrigues. Jack has to convince her she must let him protect her, because her power and abilities are worth a fortune to others, and the Dark and the Crusade will never let her live if they can kill her.
I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to more. Lilith Saintcrow is very talented at creating wonderful and unusual worlds. So far every one has been a keeper.
