Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24
I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.
Geology Prof........2007-01-06
This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.
Because they asked me to.......2006-11-04
I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.
Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology.......2006-08-08
Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.
Incorrect Item .......2006-01-19
I orderd one item and received something else. This item was needed for an on-line class and due to the error I am behind schedule on my class work.

Book Description
Utilizing actual case studies and field photographs, this successful lab manual covers the full spectrum of historical geology sediments, plate tectonics, paleontology, and petrology in flexible, self-contained units. This manual has been developed for use in both nonmajors and combined courses in historical geology. The exercises emphasize the principles and methods by which geologists discover the origins and changing nature of our planet.
These exercises or "studies" will help students understand how ancient conditions can be read from rocks and fossils, how geologic forces at the surface and within the planet can alter the environment, and how events of the past can be placed within an integrated chronological sequence. The exercises are designed for students who may not intend to specialize in geology. This does not mean, however, that the treatment is superficial, nor that it cannot give adequate preparation for students pursuing an academic major in the earth sciences.

Lab Instructor considers this full of inconsistencies.......2006-02-28
I teach a college geology lab that uses this lab book; I didn't chose it. It is filled with inconsistencies, no wonder the students are confused! It will give the students a picture and in one question tell them something about it, then in the next question completely contradict what they said previously. This makes grading just wretched; I often don't catch all these incosistencies before lab, and when reading through the students answers I have to go back and see if their answer makes sense in the context of what they were told.
Additionally, there is often not enough detail given to answer the question. For example, they are given a sequence of strata and asked whether the strata make up different time-rock units; but they don't know the age of anything in the picture! So how are they supposed to know?
I would never use this book. It's better to use something more elementary that doesn't confuse the students. I understand this lab book is trying to be more indepth than other lab books out there, but if the students are getting confused by it they're not learning more.
ok. but not as good as advertised........2005-10-11
There was a lot more writing in the book than expected. It did get to me in a timely manner and no pages were missing.
Historical Geology Lab Manual.......2002-02-16
I've taught Historical Geology labs from this manual starting with the third edition. I believe that this is one of the better lab texts on the subject but I hear the same complaints from students using the seventh edition that I heard from those using the third - "How are we supposed to interpret the information contained in these poor quality black-and-white photographs that typically lack a scale and a complete verbal description?" and "Why do the questions in the manual seem so 'obtuse'? We can't understand what is being asked for." I've seen only a slight improvement in photographic illustrations over the years (very, very few new illustrations) and minimal improvement in the "clarity" of questions. The colour geologic map plates are typically so poorly printed that I long ago stopped having students do geologic cross sections because we couldn't see elevation contour lines, differentiate colour patterns for formations, or read the strike and dip symbols. There are still (after 20 years) no exercises dealing with evolution theory. Examples of "applied" geology (petroleum, mining, hydrology) are still few in number and simplistic.

Its Alright........2007-08-30
Its a very good source, and considered a bible by some, but is strictly in metric and also relies on software instead of thorough calculations at certain points. I dont have a hatred of metric, but I wasnt raised on trained in the system so it'll make you feel quite left out if youre not an SI guy/girl. As to the software comment, its very true and sometimes examples skip steps at which point the author jumps from A to D to M to Z with little or no explanation.
so-so.......2007-01-16
I regret this purchase. If you want to know how to do these calculations...do not buy this book. If you would like to blindly use a diskette to solve problems...well by all means purchase now.
Excellent Working Reference.......2007-01-03
This book is an excellent working reference for any civil/geotechnical engineer. The example problems are very well written. The charts and graphs are easily read and very clearly printed. Excellent section on the design and analysis of segmental retaining walls. Beware of some other sites selling versions of this book printed overseas and sold here.
CLASSICAL TEXTBOOK for GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS .......2006-03-01
I'm a civil engineer involved in the design of large hydraulic structures.
We still use Bowles in our firm for designing many structures including retaining walls of different kinds, cellular cofferdams, buildings foundations, etc.
It includes many examples, easy to understand, and many charts and tables very useful for the designer.
A fundamental reference.......2003-07-09
If you have only a few geotechnical engineering books, this should be one of them. As a practicing geotechnical engineer I use this book 2 to 3 times per week. It includes the theory and essential reference material.

Instructor Made Me.......2006-03-26
This lab manual is overpriced even by college textbook standards. It is nicely bound, but made with crap paper. The labs in it are made overly tedious with extra, uneeded steps to confuse a student.
Book Description
This widely used, highly readable introduction to structural analysis is specifically designed to support the laboratory work of undergraduates in structural geology courses. Throughout the book, a geologic map from a mythical site, the Bree Creek Quadrangle, is used to help students analyze various aspects of the geologic structures exposed within this quadrangle, and ultimately to combine these analyzes into a grand synthesis.Guided by students ' and instructors ' suggestions, the authors have refined several exercises and added new ones for this third edition. In addition, every figure has been redrafted to improve clarity, and the Bree Creek Quadrangle map has been compiled onto a single fold-out sheet. An instructor 's manual is available on request from the publisher to assist the laboratory instructor in the use of the book.
Customer Reviews:
Poor undergrad textbook.......2003-10-16
Examples are poorly laid out in the text, and the questions seldom follow from what has been shown in the text. Not a useful learning tool at all.
Structural Analysis & Synthesis: A Laboratory Course in Stru.......2001-07-11
This lab manual was required for our structural geology course given at the California State University, Dominguez Hills. In general, the book is not well laid out and there are too few problems to work. In order to become proficient one must work many types of problems. The author does not give enough examples of how to solve problems using both graphical then mathematical techniques. For example, a three-point problem can be solved by graphical or mathematical methods. Additionally, the book requires the reader to move between pages to extract the necessary information to solve a problem. This makes the book appear vague or confusing at times. The book is weak in areas that are of prime importance to geologists such as 3 point problems, thickness problems, out crop patterns, etc. These areas are important because they are used regularly in the interpretation of geology. Additionally, these problems are also found on many Registered Geology examination given by various states.
This was my lab book.......2000-05-26
BAD. I had to use this for lab this quarter. The problems were on one page, the information and maps to work it were sometimes two pages prior to, or after it. Bad layout. Far too much page flipping. This book also didn't give very good examples, in such that they would give a very elementary example, and give significantly more complex problems to work, without any farther explaination. This area of Geology is difficult enough for us poor undergrads coming up without having this book to throw us off track.

Best reference for general QA/QC in testing labs.......2006-02-26
This is easily the best reference I have found for general QA/QC practices in testing laboratories. If you have one reference in your library this should be it. I have been cracking the cover on this one since the early eighties.
