Book Description

Visual note-taking relies on paring down thoughts to key words and pictures. This introduction to this technique illustrates how relationships among various concepts are highlighted and more information can be recorded on a page. This helpful tool can be used for personal self-expression, curriculum planning, group processes, and as a teaching strategy in daily lessons. Beginners are introduced to stroke-by-stroke exercises in drawing simple iconic figures that can be incorporated into one's mindscapes.

1 out of 5 stars Who has the time?.......2007-09-22

I bought this book based on the 10 positive reviews it received. Unfortunately, my money would have been best spent on a Tony Buzan book. MAPPING INNER SPACE has serious downfalls. Mainly, all the mindmaps in the book are rich in color with excellent drawn pictures...how could I even attempt to duplicate this? Though the author states several times that drawing perfectly isn't required, her own examples demonstrate that her drawing skills are very superior. Also, the use of different colors made her mind maps frameable...how would have time during a meeting to draw such elaborate pictures? I would highly recommend that you buy one of Tony Buzan's earlier books on this subject...you won't feel so intimidated when you read them.

Being an artistic and visual person, I always had trouble effectively outlining ideas. This solved the problem. For me it works.

I wanted to learn mapping to help me with my career choices as I worked with a resume writer and career coach (http://www.callfranklyspeaking.com). This book really helped me understand the concept and apply not just to a job change, but to my new job and mapping out the possibilities for my department. Easy to learn!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Product Description

Reality, today's physicists tell us, is created by the vibrations of exquisitely tiny superstrings in ten spatial dimensions. Ten dimensions? Most of us have barely gotten used to the idea that there are four.

Using simple geometry and an easygoing writing style, author Rob Bryanton starts with the lower dimensions that we are all familiar with, then uses those concepts to build one layer upon another, ultimately arriving at a way of imagining the tenth dimension.

Part scientific exploration, part philosophy, this unique book touches upon such diverse topics as dark matter, Feynman's "sum over paths", the quantum observer, and the soul. It is aimed at anyone interested in leading-edge theories about cosmology and the nature of reality, but it is not about mainstream physics. Rather, Imagining the Tenth Dimension is a mind-expanding exercise that could change the way you view this incredible universe in which we live.

Read the book whose companion website (tenthdimension.com) has already achieved worldwide popularity.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Might be worth an afternoon of your time.......2007-06-06

When this book arrived, I could tell by the quality that it was vanity-published. The writing within confirms this -- as other reviewers have put forth, the author hasn't been anywhere near a physics text. That being said, it's still a fairly interesting read. There are a few places in the book where the author's -- how shall I say -- "hippieness" comes out to play. The author's political views somehow insinuate themselves into the book's pages, but the distilled essence is still an interesting thought experiment and likely worth an afternoon to wade through.

Of course, you could also go to the website and watch the video -- the book doesn't really offer too much more over that. If you do purchase it, I suggest purchasing it used from one of these other reviewers that is likely selling it here on Amazon. It's certainly not worth the $14.95.

1 out of 5 stars This is not about dimensions at all.......2007-06-02

This book is not about dimensions at all (based on the definition of the word). If it were a collections of poems, I would have no gripe, but it pretends to be a popular science book. It makes assertions about the way things are, and is bundled with Brian Greene's "The Fabric of Cosmos", so I'm going to treat, and criticize it as such.

I'm going to briefly explain what dimensions are, and then show why statements such as "all possible histories of all possible universes are a point in ten-dimensional space" make no sense.

The a geographical location on earth can be described by two coordinates -- longitude and latitude. So the surface of a sphere is a two-dimensional entity. Most non-mathematical people agree with the first statement, and disagree with the second. They say "why, isn't the earth three-dimensional". That's true, but the *meaning* of the first two statements is exactly the same. When something can be described using two independent coordinates, that something has two dimensions. Our everyday experience simply makes us associate the word "two-dimensional" with the idea "flat", thus the intuition; but in mathematics, such associations don't apply. The word "two-dimensional" has a very explicit meaning, referring to the number of independent directions.

Consider a plumbing pipe. Its surface also has two dimensions, because from any given point you can either go along the pipe, or across. The direction across is very short -- if you crawl along it, you'll quickly come back to where you started. It wraps like the pacman screen. All the additional dimensions that physicists introduced are of this type and have a "pipe circumference" of about 1.6×10^-33 centimeters (that's thirty three zeros after decimal point). When you go along those dimensions, you come back quickly indeed! The result is much closer to zero than to infinity.

Each pixel on your screen is described with five independent variables: x,y,r,g and b (the last three being the color). So your screen shows you a 2D slice of a five-dimensional space. If each pixel could also taste differently, for example, bitter, salty, sour, sweet, and umami, the underlying space would now be ten-dimensional. So much for "all possible histories of all possible universes".

One conclusion is that the success of this book is due to the fact that some people simply cannot tell the difference between, say Hawking's popularization of black holes and Bryanton's statements like this one: "for us, a point in the seven-dimensional space is Infinity". Both sound vaguely poetical, but underneath, one is sense, while the other is nonsense.

The author not only has no qualifications to write on the subject, he grossly misunderstands the very term he used in the title.

5 out of 5 stars It was a great purchase of both the item and the 'sender'!.......2007-04-01

The item is in great condition and I got it when it was expected. Nothing more to add except that I got exactly what I excepted thus my perfect score.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent structured bridge between geometry and metaphysics.......2007-03-23

It is difficult to imagine more than 4 dimensions when you are seemingly trapped in a 4 dimensional universe. This book, however, breaks the conceptual boundaries that keep us here, and move us logically, and perhaps paradoxically, upward through the 5th, 6th, and up to the 10th dimension.
It's a rockin' book for the physicist, philosopher, or scientist, and for the curious. Read it, it's good for ya.

A Layman's View

Laypeople will probably enjoy this book more than those within the scientific community because the author isn't a scientist. Although there is little difference between the processes used by scientists and laypeople, the scientific community has historically opposed ideas originating from outside their community. You can easily see this by reading the opposing reviews on this book.

Debating the author's discovery process or the validity of his findings is counterproductive and doesn't resolve anything. The alternative is to go beyond your comfort zone by examining things freshly and from different perspectives without reaching any conclusion. You can tell when you are doing that because what you are observing disturbs or upsets you, and you are unable to reach a conclusion. That's extremely important because conclusions terminate your investigation.

The author did an excellent job of providing numerous possibilities that caused me to move beyond my comfort zone. I found the book to be freshly imaginative, entertaining and challenging. Aren't these the ingredients that motivate us to participate in an investigation? I often wonder why the scientific community is reluctant to point out the scientific achievements made by laypeople.

Book Description

Explains the methods that rocket scientists use—expressed in a way that could be applied in everyday life. The book illustrates the methods (the 7 secrets) with anecdotes, quotations and biographical sketches of famous scientists, ideas from sci-fi, personal stories and insights, and occasionally a bit of space history. The author reveals that rocket science is just common sense applied to the extraordinarily uncommon environment of outer space and that rocket scientists are people, too.

PRAISE FOR BOOK

It’s really great!—Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Lunar Module Pilot, First Manned Landing on the Moon

"People of Earth…Attention!" Jim Longuski's book takes you on a journey of exploration to that nearly infinite space between the ears and behind the brows of that most mysterious of all creatures—the rocket scientist! Going well beyond the oft-used aphorisms, where no writer has gone before, he shows you how these gifted individuals think, feel, work, play, fantasize, rationalize, laugh and cry. From the glories of their epoch-making achievements to the tragedies of their magnificent failures, it is all here, told with insight, humor, objectivity and personal perspective. Without being preachy, lessons are offered that apply to anyone seeking to make professional or personal life just a little bit more successful and fun. I just couldn't set this book down!—Robert Cesarone, Rocket Scientist, Voyager Navigator, Space Communications Architect

This book is a must read for everyone—not just those who think they want to know how Rocket Scientists think. Do not be scared off by the title; it’s a delightful and wonderfully useful easy read.—Dr. William J. O’Neil, Galileo Project Manager, 1990-1998, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Inappropriate Personal Space Shuttle Vendetta.......2007-06-04

As a "rocket scientist" (or rather, "rocket engineer") myself, I find Longuski's basic pointers about how to think like a rocket scientist very accurate. In fact, I'd give this book 5 stars if it was only full of these pointers.

However, I am extremely disappointed by Longuski's use of this book to embark on a personal vendetta against the Space Shuttle. While I agree with some of Longuski's points, they are frequently made with sarcastic language and by presenting incomplete information (certainly not the objectivity one would expect from a rocket scientist).

The book's subtitle should be "or How I Learned To Continue Worrying and Hate the Space Shuttle." At least if that were the subtitle, Longuski's Shuttle discussions would be a little more appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars Give yourself a Rocket Scientist makeover.......2007-05-16

This book isn't about how to make a thruster fire, or how to launch a spaceship into interstellar space. It's about the process of making the orderly, logical decisions that could get you there.

Most of us don't make decisions about million-dollar rocket designs. But anybody can make a bad decision based on faulty logic, incomplete data or simple boneheadedness. Wrong thinking can cause aspects of our careers and personal lives to veer dangerously off-course, like a fueled-up rocket with its thrusters firing sideways.

Dr. Longuski's book is full of common-sense, high-functioning rationality. It gets my enthusiastic endorsement!

1 out of 5 stars Not for rocket scientists.......2007-04-05

If you are a rocket scientist (and I sort of am), you will find this book shallow and disappointing. In fact, if you are of a scientific turn of mind in any way, this book will contribute nothing to your approach to problems. And, even if you are not scientificaslly oriented, I fail to see how this book will help you. I know it is not expensive, which is why I was thinking of getting this book for my 16 year old grandson, but I never passed it along because he would just laugh at the trivial and banal examples. It isn't even amusing.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all thinkers and dreamers.......2007-02-17

If you have ever wondered about the universe, been entertained by science-fiction or faced a challenging problem, then this book is for you. I found it to be both fun and informative. Most importantly, it made me smile!

This is fun reading, and since I am a rocket scientist, I found the advice to be "right-on."

    Book Description

This volume reflects an appreciation of the interactive roles of subject matter, teacher, student, and technologies in designing classrooms that promote understanding of geometry and space. Although these elements of geometry education are mutually constituted, the book is organized to highlight, first, the editors' vision of a general geometry education; second, the development of student thinking in everyday and classroom contexts; and third, the role of technologies. br br Rather than looking to high school geometry as the locus--and all too often, the apex--of geometric reasoning, the contributors to this volume suggest that reasoning about space can and should be successfully integrated with other forms of mathematics, starting at the elementary level and continuing through high school. Reintegrating spatial reasoning into the mathematical mainstream--indeed, placing it at the core of K-12 mathematics environments that promote learning with understanding--will mean increased attention to problems in modeling, structure, and design and reinvigoration of traditional topics such as measure, dimension, and form. Further, the editors' position is that the teaching of geometry and spatial visualization in school should not be compressed into a characterization of Greek geometry, but should include attention to contributions to the mathematics of space that developed subsequent to those of the Greeks. br br This volume is essential reading for those involved in mathematics education at all levels, including university faculty, researchers, and graduate students. br

    Book Description

"The word `alterity' is found infrequently in Heidegger's work, yet Vallega makes the compelling case that the effort to trace the enigmatic force of alterity is at the heart of that work. Suggesting that we find in Heidegger an enactment of that enigma by looking at what he calls `exilic grounds' in Heidegger's thought, Vallega makes an important and original contribution to Heidegger scholarship. Well written, clear in its presentation of difficult issues, precise in delineating solutions to some thorny problems which come out of Heidegger, this is a provocative and exciting book."—Dennis J. Schmidt, Penn State University

As the only full-length treatment in English of spatiality in Martin Heidegger's work, this book makes an important contribution to Heidegger studies as well as to research on the history of philosophy. More generally, it advances our understanding of philosophy in terms of its "exilic" character, a sense of alterity that becomes apparent when one fully engages the temporality or finitude essential to conceptual determinations. By focusing on Heidegger's treatment of the classical difficulty of giving conceptual articulation to spatiality, the author discusses how Heidegger's thought is caught up in and enacts the temporality it uncovers in Being and Time and in his later writings. Ultimately, when understood in this manner, thought is an "exilic" experience—a determination of being that in each case comes to pass in a loss of first principles and origins and, simultaneously, as an opening to conceptual figurations yet to come. The discussion engages such main historical figures as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, and indirectly Husserl, as well as contemporary European and American Continental thought.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not a great introduction.......2003-12-05

With a very interesting theory about "Thinking on Exilic Grounds" Vallega shows some perspectives and problems in Heideggers thoughts. While this is inspiring, this book doesn't really give you any broad overview of Heideggers thoughts on space. It focusses mostly on Sein und Zeit, and on the reason why Heidegger DOESN'T write much about space in that work. Rather I had hoped for an investigation and explanation of Heideggers later works, as these explicitely focusses on the philosophy of space. For example "Art and Space" and "Building Dwelling Thinking". Such later works are treated in only 20 pages! And again the words "exilic grounds" appear several times on each pages, as have they done all the way through the book. The interpretation somehow gets ahead of the explanation, I fell.
So this book may offer an interesting point of view concerning space, in relation to Heidegger, but isn't an introduction to Heideggers philosophy of space. A work like Strökers "Investigations in Philosophy of Space" is much more systematic and broad. It explains many keynotions, that are very helpfull in further discussion and thinking about the issue of space, whereas, roughly said, Vallega only introduces one. Ströker doesn't go that much into details about Heidegger though.
This critique applies even without considdering the high price for less than 200 pages (55 US $).

      Book Description

Thinking Space is ideal reading for those looking to learn about the Ospatial turn1 in social and cultural theory. As theorists have begun using using geographical concepts and metaphors to think about the complex and differentiated world this book examines the way they use spatial ideas, what role these ideas play in their thinking and what this means for how we think about theory and space. Among the writers discussed are: Simmel, Bakhtin, Deleuze, Cixous, Lefebvre, Lacan, Bourdieu, Foucault and Fanon.

      Download Description

Thinking Space looks at a range of social theorists and asks what role space plays in their work, what difference (if any) it makes to their concepts, and what difference such an appreciation makes to the way we might think about space.

        Book Description

Visuospatial thinking encompasses a wide range of thinking processes concerning space, whether it be navigating across town, understanding multimedia displays, reading an architectural blueprint or a map. Understanding it and in particular, how people represent and process visual and spatial information, is relevant not only to cognitive psychology but also education, geography, architecture, medicine, design, computer science/artificial intelligence, semiotics and animal cognition. This book presents a broad overview of research that can be applied to basic theoretical and applied/naturalistic contexts.
