Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars principles of sedimentology.......2005-09-21

this book was not at all like new, it was watermarked, ripped cover and crappy highlighting.

5 out of 5 stars Probably one of the better sed-strat books around.......2005-09-01

I used this book in my sedimentation and stratigraphy course two years ago, but I still have it hanging around on my bookshelves after three moves and a new school. Why? Because it's incredibly useful!

Boggs is probably one of the better organized sedimentology books I've had the pleasure to come across. I've come away from reading it with a better understanding of depositional environments than I could have gotten otherwise. The illustrations were quite clear to me, and fit into the text well.

In conclusion, Boggs makes a relatively complicated subject much easier to grasp for an undergraduate without dumbing it down to the point where the book is useless to anyone else. This is just as good of a reference as it is a text!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting to the interested.......2005-08-05

This is a no-nonsense, well-organized, and detailed introduction to sedimentology and stratigraphy. In a nutshell, it covers 1) the origin and transport of sediments, 2)physical properties of sedimentary rocks, 3) classification of sedimentary rocks, 4) depositional environments, and 5) the principles of stratigraphy. Though most may aquire it as a text for a sed-strat course, it would make a useful reference for any interested person.

Regarding a previous review here, a book should not be judged by how it will not be useful for an upcoming exam. That may instead be an indicator of some deeper issues with the student, the instructors, and the course. Also, when someone says something is "unclear" and "bogged down in details", I would assume they are not too interested in the subject matter to begin with. If one has made it as far as sed-strat and finds it "boring", I would highly recommend switching majors before more time and money are wasted. It will only get harder, not to mention graduate-level study or actual professional work. Since the review was written five years ago, I guess the die has already been cast.

5 out of 5 stars A clear, well written text.......2004-11-30

Principles of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy is a clear and well written text. Excellent pictures and drawings add to the clarity and enhanced my enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars Solid as a rock.......2000-08-29

Although Boggs dispenses with the multicoloured pictures and obligatory CD-Rom favoured by many modern textbooks, this is not to his detriment. It results in a more concise textbook with clear and simple sketches used effectively to illustrate the text. Perhaps the book may appear somewhat `boring' to certain students, but I prefer to think of it as a `solid' textbook that says what it needs to in a generally clear and understandable manner. For those undergraduates who are more interested in quality rather than flashy appearances, this textbook will prove invaluable in your study of geology.

    Book Description

Principles of Sequence Stratigraphy provides an in-depth coverage and impartial assessment of all current ideas and models in the field of sequence stratigraphy. Even though widely popular among all groups interested in the analysis of sedimentary basin fills, both in academia and in the industry, sequence stratigraphy is yet a difficult undertaking due to an overwhelming jargon and the persistence of conflicting approaches as to how the sequence stratigraphic method should be applied to the rock record. This textbook examines the relationship between such conflicting approaches from the perspective of a unifying platform, demonstrating that sufficient common ground exists to eliminate terminology barriers and to facilitate communication between all practitioners of sequence stratigraphy.

This work is not only a review of past and current literature, but also includes key original viewpoints and is illustrated with new graphic material and numerous field examples of outcrop, core, well log and 3D seismic data in full colour. The book is addressed to anyone interested in understanding and applying the method of sequence stratigraphic analysis, from students to geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers. Sequence stratigraphy remains the most recent paradigm in the broad field of sedimentary geology, with tremendous potential to deciphering the record of global change and to improving the success of economic exploration.

    * Offers theoretical guidelines of how the facies and time relationships are expected to be under specific circumstances such as subsidence patterns, sediment supply, topographic gradients, etc.
    * Contains numerous high-quality and full-color diagrams, photographs and illustrations, virtually on every aid in comprehension of the subject
    * Features a dedicated chapter on discussions and conclusions incorporating all previous chapters with references, basic principles and strategies
    * Provides an extensive list of references for further reading, as well as an author and subject index for quick information access

    Book Description

Sedimentology and Stratigraphy is the first introductory text to relate sedimentological units to the larger stratigraphic picture. Representing the current research priorities, it leaves behind an older, and now outdated, generation of textbooks. The author's aim is to consider the Earth in terms of its physical environments, to describe the processes which affect generation, transport and deposition of sediment, and to build up a picture of the stratigraphy generated by these processes. The initial treatment is geomorphological, and the general approach non-mathematical. This will become the introductory textbook of choice in sedimentology and stratigraphy.

5 out of 5 stars Starters' kit for sedimentology.......2002-05-03

This well written book contains most important subjects involved in sedimentology. Besides sedimentology a small introduction to stratigraphy can be found. The focus is on sedimentary systems and special chapters are devoted to delta's, rivers, lacustrine and marine environments. Clear illustrations are a great help understanding the text and developing an overall idea of the subjects. Overall a very good book for undergraduate geology courses.

      Book Description

Over the past five years there have been many advances in the field of basin analysis. Developments such as the publication of new stratigraphic codes; new research in fission-track dating; evolution of thought regarding the importance of tectonic versus eustatic controls of regional and global cycles; and refinements of geophysically-based, basin-subsidence models have necessitated the publication of a second edition of Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis. Like the first edition, this book emphasizes the stratigraphic evidence which geologists can actually see in outcrops, well records, and core samples and can gather using geophysical techniques. Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis is both an excellent text for students and a practical handbook for professional geologists.

      Book Description

This book provides a unique survey of the worldwide database of sequence stratigraphy, reviews the methods for describing sequences and assessing causes of sequence generation, and provides an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of sequence development. The book reviews the present status of global cycle correlation and the hypothesis of global eustacy, and examines the applications of sequence stratigraphy to studies in practical petroleum geology. Students, lecturers, researchers, and practitioners are provided with a critical, but balanced, appraisal of modern concepts in this rapidly developing and controversial area. Ideas and concepts originating from a wide range of individuals and "schools" of thought are discussed and evaluated. A very extensive bibliography is included.

5 out of 5 stars Foundation for sequence stratigraphic analysis.......1998-11-30

This text, combined with the work by Vail et al. (AAPG, Memoir 26) and Haq et al. (Science, v235, pp 1156-1167) form the foundation for sequence stratigraphic analysis. Miall is a skeptic of most far-reaching sequence stratigraphic interpretations, but this book is modern (1997) and provides a balance treatment of the topic. While certianly not the only source for the study of sequence stratigraphy, it is a recommended addition to any library on the subject.

        Book Description

Rift basins of Triassic-Jurassic age that are associated with the breakup of the Pangean supercontinent contain an extraordinary record of the physical and biological conditions during this important period of Earth history. Rather than studying the rift basins as local features, ongoing work reveals that the Triassic-Jurassic rifts should be considered in a broader context that spans the entire proto-Atlantic realm. The rift province, collectively called the central Atlantic margin system, spans more than 45 degrees of paleolatitude and records over 35 million years of Earth history. The central Atlantic margin basins are of broad appeal to researchers interested in topics as diverse as extensional tectonics, the global magnetostratigraphic timescale, the evolution of early mammals, the appearance and diversification of dinosaurs, rift to drift crustal dynamics, astronomical forcing of climate, and models for the formation and occurrence of economic minerals and fossil fuel deposits. This extensive two volume work offers in-depth coverage of the North American components of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province rifts by experts in the field.

In volume 2, leading researchers give thorough reviews and highlight recent advances in our understanding of the sedimentary rocks, stratigraphic architecture, early dinosaur and reptile footprints, and vertebrae fossils of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province.

The companion volume, The Great Rift Valleys of Pangea in Eastern North America: Volume 1, Techtonics, Structure, and Volcanism, 0-231-11162-2, covers such topics as the structural geology, tectonics, and volcanism of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province. It is edited by Peter M. LeTourneau and Paul E. Olsen and is also available from Columbia University Press.

            Book Description

Developments in the modelling of sediment transport in rivers and the interactions with the river-bed have been remarkable over the last two decades. This progress has increased the understanding of the nature of turbulence, and the ability to replicate mathematically simple flow-particle interactions which can be observed experimentally. In addition, quite elegant models of stratigraphic complexes have evolved because of the growing computational power available to scientists. As always, additional knowledge has raised even more intriguing questions and the quest for explanation of phenomena has led to increased specialisation. Therefore, there are few fluid dynamicists or sedimentologists who can successfully span the two disciplines. The intention of this book is to assist various specialists on keeping abreast of current developments in related areas. The book initially focuses on hydrodynamics of turbulent flow, followed by basic two and three-dimensional flow through straight and curved channels and the flow over bed topography. This is then followed by a consideration of initial motion, sediment transport and particle sorting. The potential for modelling fluidsediment interactions is provided at the end of the first section. Linking chapters then follow, considering the preservation potential of fluvial bedforms in the stratigraphic record and the basic variety of channel morphology recognised in sedimentary studies. Subsequent chapters consider reconstructing hydraulic process and fluvial morphology from stratigraphy; the influence of bedform and depositional controls on packing of economically important sedimentary rocks; and recent advances in modelling subsurface fluvial stratigraphy. A final chapter provides a brief view of future perspectives. The objective of this volume is to review recent advances made by geologists and hydrodynamicists in an accessible manner and to promote an increased and fruitful dialogue between sedimentary geologists, geomorphologists and hydrodynamicists.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sediment Compilations Available.......2007-05-31

After the fourth time I chased a promising reference into the library and emerged with this book I knew it was something special. Carling and Dawson put together a very good compilation that remains compelling a decade later. Best was the appropriate (must...resist...obvious...pun) choice to review the flurry of recent developments in bedform mechanics. His 60 page overview is itself worth checking this book out as it is accessible, comprehensive and up to date. Whiting's chapter on mixing was a welcome surprise as he detailed the wide range of processes responsible for bed sorting unlike anything otherwise compiled. Kelsey's overview of modeling is very different the one I would write as it is sweeping in scope and broad in its review of approaches. But it is generally interesting and provides the best synthesis of active layer approaches I found when recently doing some work on the topic. Each of the other bed mechanics papers are worthwhile. Coming from the geologic perspective the text also includes several stratigraphy papers that are outside of my interest or ability to evaluate. However, if the reach the level of applicability of the bed mechanics paper they are highly recommended.
