Book Description
The image to the right shows a volcanic landscape in central Africa, including parts of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). This image was obtained from the SIR-C multi-wavelength radar remote sensing system, operated on the space shuttle Endeavor in 1994. SIR-C monitors the earth's surface using wave-lengths of energy that are much longer than the visible light seen by the human eye; thus, the hues in this "false color" radar image have little to no relationship to what would be seen in ordinary visible light. The volcano at top center of the image is Karisimba, 4500 m high. The green patch on the lower slopes of Karisimba volcano, to the right of its peak, is an area of bamboo forest-one of the world's few remaining habitats for mountain gorillas. Only some 600-700 mountain gorillas still remain on earth. Because the SIR-C radar is virtually unaffected by weather conditions, it is an ideal tool for capturing images over the cloudy and misty volcanic areas where mountain gorillas live. Nyiragongo volcano (3465 m elevation) dominates the lower portion of the image some of the lava flows that surround it have a distinctive purple appearance in this image. As shown here, remote sensing in wavelengths of energy outside the range of visible light can often reveal aspects of our environment that complement what can be detected by the unaided eye. (This image covers a 24 km by 60 km area.) The global image (inset, below) is a composite view of vegetation cover on land and chlorophyll concentration in the oceans. This image was derived from data collected by the SeaWiFS global ocean color monitoring mission. Wide field-of-view sensors such as SeaWiFS permit continuous, long-term monitoring of the environment on a global scale, providing an important contribution to our understanding of the earth system as a single, integrated whole.

Absolutly One of the BEST!!.......2004-04-16
This book is one of the best on the market on Image Interpretation. After taking a class and the instructor had a different book (which was poorly written book) I bought this book. I found it interesting and easy to use, any math was explained step by step! I cant wait to get the 5th edition! This is a must for any person who is interested in this topic or is working in the field.
One of the best books in RS.......2000-10-12
One of the best text books in Remote Sensing: comprehensive, complete. I have the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions. Will wait to the 4th edition in paperback.
A good technical overview of RS.......1998-02-12
The text is a comprehensive introduction to RS that covers the science from physical basis to sensors and applications. It is not a HOW-TO-DO-IT book as opposed to a complete textbooks for students in this area who need good background of the science and its application. We use it as a good textbook for solid foundation prior to more practical texts on HOW-TO-DO-IT.
Drawn out, very difficult to follow.......1996-05-22
Imagine a textbook without a glossary of terms. A book thatseems to use fancy nomenclature only as a tool to boostthe authors egos. Having strained through this text only by shear interest in Remote, I would advise any academic to look towards the piles of other more appropriatly constructed textbooks concerned with remote. As to the publishers claim that it also concerns itself with GIS applications, yes, but in an obscure and unfriendly manner. Do not consider this book as a textbook choice. It only serves to discredit the noble and forthright advances of a vital technology.

Book Description
This book introduces the principles of remote sensing from an Earth resource perspective. It describes a) the fundamental characteristics of electromagnetic radiation and how the energy interacts with Earth materials such as vegetation, water, soil and rock, b) how the energy reflected or emitted from these materials is recorded using a variety of remote sensing instruments (e.g., cameras, multispectral scanners, hyperspectral instruments, RADAR), and c) how we can extract fundamental biophysical or land use/land cover information from the remote sensor data. The history of remote sensing, the principles of visual photo-interpretation, and photogrammetry are also presented. Application chapters focus on remote sensing of vegetation, water, urban land use, and soil/rock and geomorphic features. The book was written for physical, natural, and social scientists interested in how remote sensing of the environment can be used to solve real-world problems. The following features make this book easy to comprehend and apply: a) it contains hundreds of illustrations specially designed to make complex principles easy to understand, b) a substantial reference list at the end of each chapter, c) the 8.5 x 11" format allows the remote sensing images and diagrams to be easily interpreted, d) 32 pages of color are used to display remote sensing images or biophysical information that may be extracted from remote sensor data, and e) an Appendix provides Internet addresses for the most important sources of remote sensing information. Exercises and book illustrations are made available to instructors via the author's website. This book is a companion to "Introductory Digital Image Processing: A Remote Sensing Perspective" (Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1996) which introduces the fundamentals of digital image analysis. It is ideal for undergraduate or graduate courses in airphoto interpretation and remote sensing.
Customer Reviews:
Best overall coverage of the topic I've found.......2005-11-08
This text found its way into my collection during my undergraduate career as required for a Geography course in remote sensing. I ejoyed it as an introduction to the topic but later found myself returning to it time and again in graduate school working on a remote sensing thesis. I keep on finding new reasons to open it up in my business, at Terra Prints. It's exhaustive while not exhausting. Worth buying.
Roland Clark
excellent!.......2001-02-18
This book covers broad area of remote sensing; nature, physics, photogrametry, history, various types of sensors (multispectral, thermal, Microwabe..), earth resource perspective(vegetation, water, urban landscape, soil&mineral...). So if you want to learn how remote sesning are employed in this world, I strongly recommend to buy this book. if you want to learn digital image processing, you should buy the sister book "Introductory Digital Image Processing: remote sensing perspective".
All sections (especially vegetation) contains alot of infomation and easy to understand with nice figures and pictures.
Only one fault of this book is this price...

Book Description
Since the first edition of
Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach was published in 2002, GRASS has undergone major improvements. This second edition includes numerous updates related to the new development; its text is based on the GRASS 5.3 version from December 2003. Besides changes related to GRASS 5.3 enhancements, the introductory chapters have been re-organized, providing more extensive information on import of external data. Most of the improvements in technical accuracy and clarity were based on valuable feedback from readers.
Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach, Second Edition, provides updated information about the use of GRASS, including geospatial modeling with raster, vector, and site data, image processing, visualization, and coupling with other open source tools for geostatistical analysis and web applications. A brief introduction to programming within GRASS encourages new development. The sample data set used throughout the book has been updated and is available on the GRASS web site. This book also includes links to sites where the GRASS software and on-line reference manuals can be downloaded and additional applications can be viewed.
Customer Reviews:
nice alternative.......2005-03-08
As GIS continues to grow in many usages, it was inevitable that someone [actually a bunch of blokes] would consider an open source GIS package. The book describes one, GRASS; and specifically version 5.3. It offers many visualisation conveniences of the prioprietary packages. Very easy and intuitive usages.
GRASS also relieves some of the burden of designing a GIS database that the visualisation draws upon. Though you be aware that the emphasis is on the latter.
The book does raise the issue of what is needed for you to use a prioprietary package, in lieu of GRASS. Especially if the "entry level" capabilities of the current GRASS are enough for your needs.

Book Description
Hyperspectral Imaging: Techniques for Spectral Detection and Classification is an outgrowth of the research conducted over the years in the Remote Sensing Signal and Image Processing Laboratory (RSSIPL) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. It explores applications of statistical signal processing to hyperspectral imaging and further develops non-literal (spectral) techniques for subpixel detection and mixed pixel classification. This text is the first of its kind on the topic and can be considered a recipe book offering various techniques for hyperspectral data exploitation. In particular, some known techniques, such as OSP (Orthogonal Subspace Projection) and CEM (Constrained Energy Minimization) that were previously developed in the RSSIPL, are discussed in great detail. This book is self-contained and can serve as a valuable and useful reference for researchers in academia and practitioners in government and industry.
Customer Reviews:
Worst quality I have EVER seen!.......2006-12-18
For a book about cutting edge, remote sensing techniques, the quality of the printing of this book is appalling! Images are blurry, and their text captions are often unreadable. Even the print quality of the normal text itself is often poor and misaligned - news papers have better quality than this book!

Book Description
One of the key geographical developments over the last two centuries has been that of urbanisation. In recent years this has exploded globally, particularly in developing countries. It is essential for governments, planners and researchers in geography and allied fields to understand this process and the main way of being able to do this is to accurately map these changes. The main method of this mapping is Remote Sensing. This up-to-date analysis of the area looks at a wide range of methodologies currently being used to produce and analyse remotely sensed data of urban areas. The authors examine the various techniques used to extract information from digital, multispectral images of urban areas. Donnay and Barnsley then go on to look at the identification of urban forms, the delineation of agglomerations and the development of urban morphology, considering the analysis of integrated data sets and surface models and going on to look at the estimation of human population levels.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensible and helpful.......2005-08-06
I used this book during my studies, but also now I use it often to check some things. The book is written generally - it does not go too deeply into detail - but is still a good reference for a lot of questions.
A solid, well balanced and quite readable text for RS study.......2003-05-24
I was fortunate enough to attend Gareth Rees' course, for which this book was initially written. As a student that always needed to get things through the brain more than once for it to stick, I can thoroughly recommend this book. It is well written, handles the mathematical treatments with enough detail to be easy to follow (but it does assume a fairly strong undergraduate mathematical background). Excellent description of Synthetic Aperture Radar techniques and written in a style that makes it quite fresh for what is fundamentally a course text book.
EARTH SCIENCE.... professional.......2001-11-21
Physical Principles of Remote Sensing
by W. G. Rees, Gareth Rees
is one of the first books that should be chased after by anyone planning to adapt the theory of LAND STUDIES to his/her future. Required as an intorductory textbook for many university level programs, THE PRINCIPLES OF REMOTE SENSING prepares the mind for future training in earth sciences.
Ms. Carmen R. Cross
Great reference for remote sensing scientists and engineers........1998-12-08
The book provides simple explainations with just enough equations to help understand concepts in electromagnetics, radiation interaction with atmosphere, Microwave-visible-IR systems, scattering, satellites, antennas and data processing. Great for reference or introductory course in remote sensing.

Book Description
This book is the first to cover the fundamentals of hydrogeophysics from both the hydrogeological and geophysical perspectives. Authored by leading experts and expert groups, the book starts out by explaining the fundamentals of hydrological characterization, with a focus on hydrological data acquisition, hydrological measurement analysis, and geostatistics. The fundamentals of geophysical characterization are then presented, with a focus on electrical resistivity, induced polarization, electromagnetic, GPR and seismic methods. The geophysical methods and petrophysical discussions presented here emphasize the theory, assumptions, approaches, and interpretations that are particularly important for hydrogeological applications. A series of case studies illustrate hydrogeophysical approaches for mapping hydrological units, estimation of hydrogeological parameters, and monitoring of hydrogeological processes in both the vadose and saturated zones. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of hydrogeophysical frontiers, such as emerging technologies and stochastic hydrogeophysical inversion approaches.
Hydrogeophysics is intended to provide an introduction to students and to new researchers to the field, to be used as a resource for researchers already active in the field, and to serve as a springboard for advances in the field that are needed to improve our understanding and management of the earth’s shallow subsurface.

Book Description
Remote Sensing Digital Image Analysis provides the non-specialist with an introduction to quantitative evaluation of satellite and aircraft derived remotely retrieved data. Each chapter covers the pros and cons of digital remotely sensed data, without detailed mathematical treatment of computer based algorithms, but in a manner conductive to an understanding of their capabilities and limitations. Problems conclude each chapter. This fourth edition has been developed to reflect the changes that have occurred in this area over the past several years. Its focus is on those procedures that seem now to have become part of the set of tools regularly used to perform thematic mapping. As with previous revisions, the fundamental material has been preserved in its original form because of its tutorial value; its style has been revised in places and it has been supplemented if newer aspects have emerged in the time since the third edition appeared. It still meets, however, the needs of the senior student and practitioner.

Book Description
Significant advances in geomatics and geomorphology are changing the way in which scientists study complex mountain environments. This book provides a critical treatment and evaluation of these recent developments. With the advent of advanced satellite sensors, high resolution satellite imagery and digital elevation, models now make possible quantitative analysis and modelling of the landscape. So it is becoming ever more important for geoscientists to integrate geomatics into their scientific investigation. This book is a "must" for any researcher actively working in geomatics, geomorphology and mountain systems. It will also be valuable to geologists and resource planners interested in the role of surface processes in complex orogens and resource assessment and sustainable development.
From the reviews:
"...edited by two active and well-respected researchers in the field of geomorphology, surveys a broad range of quantitative approaches to the analysis of mountain systems. This book provides a critical treatment and evaluation of recent developments.
This well-written and wide-ranging material provides valuable insights into the use of specialized GIScience techniques across the broad spectrum of mountain geomorphic research.
This book is a welcome addition for advanced students and researchers actively working on the study of geomorphology in mountain systems. The text also will be valuable to a range of scientists interested in the role of surface processes in mountainous regions, and to planners interested in resource assessment and sustainable development." Book Description
Hydrology is a topical and growing subject, as the earth's water resources become scarcer and more vulnerable. Although more than half the surface area of continents is covered with hard fractured rocks, there has until now been no single book available dealing specifically with fractured rock hydrogeology.
This book deals comprehensively with the fundamental principles for understanding these rocks, as well as with exploration techniques and assessment. It also provides in-depth discussion of structural mapping, remote sensing, geophysical exploration, GIS, field hydraulic testing, groundwater quality and contamination, geothermal reservoirs, and resources assessment and management.
Hydrogeological aspects of various lithology groups, including crystalline rocks, volcanic rocks, carbonate rocks and clastic formations, are dealt with separately, using and discussing examples from all over the world.
Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks will be an invaluable reference source for postgraduate students, researchers, exploration scientists, and engineers engaged in the field of groundwater development in fractured rock areas.
