It's about time someone brought to light the other side of the story. A must read for liberals.

1 out of 5 stars Exceedingly one-sided attempt to suggest warming is beneficial and/or not man-made.......2007-09-23

The issue of global warming has long been in the news. From the perspective of Australia the issue is critical, as rainfall in my home city of Melbourne has declined by forty percent in the past eleven years. Such a decline is totally unparalleled in the 150 years of instrumental record.

At the same time, the northwest of Australia has seen dramatic increases in rainfall ever since the late 1960s, so much so that seven of its eight wettest years (since 1885) have occurred since 1995.

In this context, even though able usually to listen to anybody (actually, I generally dislike moderate views because they tend to be wishy-washy) it is not possible for me to take most of the claims made by Horner seriously.

Horner's contention, basically, is that global warming is either not man-made or will in the long-term benefit human society. As to the first point, he greatly exaggerates the proportion of greenhouse gases that is naturally occurring. For instance, my prior knowledge of science tell me that it impossible that more than minute quantities (like, say, a few grams per year) of sulfur hexafluoride or other exceedingly potent fluorine-containing greenhouse gases could be naturally produced each year. Because there is no natural sink for them, natural production of fluorine-containing greenhouse gases in the quantities asserted by Horner would inevitably turn the Earth into an inferno with temperatures hot enough, say, to melt copper. He also understates the proportion of other greenhouse gases that are man-made, notably carbon dioxide where emissions from combustion are far greater than those from biological decay, fires, volcanoes and oceanic release.

Horner's viewpoints about the extent and effects of global warming are also very poorly done. For instance, he suggests that increases in global temperatures have been due to closures of stations in the Russian Arctic. As a person with knowledge of how mean temperatures for an area are calculated, I know well that is unlikely unless every single station in Arctic Russia was closed (which is not what he says): the few that remain would be always given greater weight owing to the large areas they represent and the closures would not affect the average. Although he rightly asserts that the Southern Hemisphere is warming much less than the Northern, my knowledge of Australian climatology suggests this is almost certainly due to the large increases in rainfall that have occurred not only over pastoral areas of Western Australia but also in similar latitudes of South America. Large increases in rainfall naturally lead to reduced temperatures because it has become much cloudier. For example, 2000, whilst the fifth warmest year on record globally, was one of the coolest on record in pastoral areas of Western Australia owing to general record-breaking annual rainfall. In areas of Australia that have dried out, there has been as much warming as in the Northern Hemisphere.

Horners' idea about the question of "global cooling" is similarly weak. The issue rose form the fact that it was thought upon studying previous glacial-interglacial cycles where 10,000 years of interglacial were followed by 90,000 years of glacial that we were near the end of the Holocene and that the next ice age was due to begin soon. Recent data show that we are moving towards an era of longer - but cooler - interglacials (and relatively shorter, less cold glacial periods).

Horner's other chief thesis is that warming always benefits civilisations. He cites the effects of the Medieval Warm Period upon European civilisation as an example - for instance the settlement of Greenland by the Norse and its ending with cooling and the Little Ice Age. However, there is little evidence that this rule holds in hotter and more fragile environments. For instance, the Hohokam of Arizona declined after reaching a peak in the eighth century just before the Medieval Warm Period, and some Mesoamerican societies also declined from the ninth century, apparently due to climate change. In any case, because many areas that are major agricultural regions today were not farmed in the Middle Ages, comparisons are not possible.

Horner's viewpoint that reducing greenhouse emissions would be immensely costly is also impossible to accept. Government welfare to polluting corporations is extremely large, as are budgets for building utterly unnecessary freeways. These could easily be completely redirected to supporting renewable energy and public transit at great benefit to everybody except some exceedingly powerful vested interests in car and fossil fuel corporations. Although Horner is actually right in saying the US' per capita emissions show greater decline than Europe's, the difference is not significant and if it reflects anything at all, it is probably the greater willingness of Americans to accept less comfortable lifestyles.

The way in which Horner accepts only the evidence that suits his viewpoints is really the worst kind of science you will ever see. It recurs time and time against throughout this book and for this reason alone I would not recommend "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming".

5 out of 5 stars What the media won't tell you about this farce called globla warming.......2007-09-22

This book covers all the stuff you need to know to become informed about so called global warming. Yes the climate does change but it is cyclic not due to man made causes!!!! The powers that be that worship this religion are only in it to pick your pockets and gain power!!!

It is a fallacy that man is causing this to the degree that the greens and the great Goreacle want you to believe.

Read this and become informed to put to rest the misinformation that they want you to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming is Well Written.......2007-09-22

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming answers the unscientific and alarmist notions by Al Gore and the environmentalists. The book proposes reasoned thought instead of arm-waving and rhetoric. It proposes that no science is "settled" and everything is still open to question and should be studied in order to improve the human condition. The human condition can be improved by studying the previous history of the planet, finding out how the environment changed and adapted through time and various challenges. Tne human condition cannot be improved by adopting some apocalyptic measures thought out at 2 A.M. and not reexamined in the light of day.

4 out of 5 stars The ongoing climate change debate.......2007-09-18

This book had some very good data to support the case that the current global warming issue is greatly overstated. The book is easy to read and the science clearly explained. The problem with the book is that it is too long because of the repetition of the main arguments. It is worth a read and would be a good book for the alarmists to read.

Book Description

Climate variability has become the primary environmental concern of the 21st Century. Yet, despite the scientific community's warnings of the imminent dangers of global warming, politicians world-wide have failed to agree on what to do about this potentially devastating environmental problem. This introductory primer informs scientists, policy makers and the general public by clarifying the conflicting claims of the debate.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Case for Climate Change.......2007-04-06

The book takes a logical stance from the development of observations in science to a political conclusion and what to do about climate change. This is two books. One is the science of global warming and climate change. The other is about politics.

The science side is abbreviated. The authors avoid an in-depth discussion and rely mostly on correlations for explanation. A graph on page 74 is stunning. It is a better match than Gore's correlation from An Inconvenient Truth. I had only hoped that the authors had talked about laboratory results of experiments on greenhouse gases.

The politics side is wordy and a bit predictable, although Dessler and Parson do a good job in making a very logical and well-developed case.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2007-02-26

How does science work? And how do politics work? How does it all fit together with the data that has come from various sources all over the planet - and is climate change real? All these questions are addressed in an easy read, very neutral. The authors take a firm stand on the issue finally, from a scientific perspective, and the result is clear: Yes, it is real, and it is coming at us, while politicans are incapable and totally overwhelmed by the problem. It is a new kind of threat nobody can deal with, thus we ignore it. Too much for us. Surprising to read from two high profile, Ex-NASA scientists from the US themselves. Alerting at the same time. A must read to be up to date with the debate or quickly get an overview. Stefan Klose - University of Ulm - Germany

5 out of 5 stars Helpful guide to Global Climate Change.......2006-11-10

This is a good very good review of science and policy of Global Climate Change without bias esotheric science or paragraphs going nowhere.

Recomended to the reader who wants to make up their own mind. The book will find a use in introductory survey coures in High School and College.

More graphs and diagrams would have been helpful, although they are available to those scanning the internet.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for your collection.......2006-08-08

This is an excellent way into the subject for the beginner. There's some very sound science, most of which is agreed upon and a good understanding of how policy making works, or doesn't. The two ideas are brought together along with a discussion as to how we might proceed. One of the strengths of the book is the frequent use of boxes to put alternative viewpoints and summaries to show where we are in the debate. The overall effect is one of the most lucid and readable introductory accounts of the topic that has been published in some while. As such it should be seen as a 'must-buy' and an essential addition to the library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of knowledge.......2005-07-09

If you want to learn the most common surveying situations you may face out there, this is the book you need to read. Written with a high level of professionalism, the book covers a wide range of topics. I've just finished a course on surveying and definitely it helped me a lot. You will enjoy it if you are a math lover.

5 out of 5 stars Do well on these questions and you will pass your FLS!!!.......2003-12-13

I used this book almost exclusively in studying for the FLS exam in October of 2003 and ultimately passing it. I felt like the questions in here prepared me really well, in fact, the majority of them were more difficult than the ones on the test! The only things that I can think of that it didn't delve into were computer, spelling, and grammar questions which were on the exam, but you only have to get a 70% on it, not 100%!! After all this is a SURVEYING book....

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Surveying.......2002-12-29

This is the most practical exam prep tool I've found to date, and I know what I'm talking about. Licensure was important to me, so I've purchased and used over $2,000 worth of references. This book is the most thorough, topic by topic prep manual I've seen. If you can master the material in this book, you're as ready for the NCEES exam as you can possibly be. How do I know? I passed on my first sitting, and this book was one of the main reasons why. Going through this book from cover to cover is definitely like "basic training" for surveyors.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Boring,Boring,Boring and Totally Uninspiring!.......2007-09-23

This was the first book on intercessory prayer that I "tried"(unsuccessfully) to read. It was so boring and unmoving that I searched here at Amazon for others on this subject and came across Ronald Dunn's and was able to "look inside". As soon as I read the table of contents I knew this was the book for me,and I ordered it on the spot, and have not regretted that. So much more understandable and seemingly heartfelt, it touched my heart, where this book left me completely numb!

I would not recommend this to anyone, and would instead heartily recommend "Don't Just Stand There,Pray Something:The Incredible Power Of Intercessory Prayer" by Ronald Dunn. Which encourages you to begin your work immediately as a prayer warrior,if that is what is on your heart, and if that is the case this book really fires up your zeal for it. I'm so happy that the Dutch Sheet's book was from the library and I had not wasted any money for it!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book. Better than Yancy's effort........2007-04-20

Better and more practical than Phillip Yancy's book on prayer. This book offers solid advice on how to pray and the importance of persistence.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Find.......2007-01-19

This book is a great tool for study and understanding on the topic of prayer. Dutch Sheets presents prayer concepts in an amazing and insightful way, which has truly had an impact on my prayer life. He has ideas and thought provoking beliefs that I had never heard before and after reading this book, I have bougth multiple copies as gifts for others.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on prayer ever written!.......2007-01-18

I have read many books on prayer and none have impacted my prayer life as much as this one. It gives you a new attitude towards the importance of prayer, and it gives you practical examples of how to transform your prayer life. It explains the authority every believer has in Christ and teaches how to walk in that authority. Very motivating!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth reading!.......2007-01-11

This book has taught me why I have to pray and more importantly:
inspired me to pray more!It also gave me a new understanding of my authority as praying child of God.

If you are looking for reference materials to take the California Engineering Surveying Exam as part of the Civil Engineer's PE exam, this is not the book you want. It doesn't cover the general concepts that an engineer is looking for. Seems to directed more at a person working on a surveying crew instead.

I am a Native American through blood and I can honestly say I was not brought up in any special way and that large part of my heritage was never really acknowledged. Nevertheless, I have always been up on it, I pray to The Great Spirit and so on. I purchased this book because I knew some of the context but I was more interested in learning about other tribes and their stories and such in comparison to my own since I already knew those ones. This book is great and awesome for anyone who is studying Native American symbols, stories, and ceremonies. There are, in fact, some things that are not necessarily completely true-like the owl omen for instance. I think it is geared toward a more nuetral instance in comparison to an everynight occurence, but I will never know. Although, everything else is pretty justifiable and quite informational. Definitely get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Animals can tell us a lot..........2007-04-14

Animals have been living on Earth and dealing with nature a lot longer than us. They can sense when an Earthquake is about to happen. Pets can sense an illness within their owner before the owner does. Birds, insects, and other animals have evolved and adapted to deal with floods, climate changes and dangers that happen in their lives. Why NOT use their reactions and knowledge to help us deal with nature and our own dangers?
American Indians have been listening to nature and the animals to help them deal with such dangers. Early Europeans did the same before Modern Science and the Church destroyed those cultures. While I am not sure about many of the stories I did enjoy the book. It is for beginners and I think many details have been withheld so not to make the exercises and the ceremonies beyond the grasp of the person just starting his or her spiritual quest. Think of it as a Spirits of the Earth for Dummies.

5 out of 5 stars A Beatifully written Spiritual Book For Healing, Knowledge and Practice by Honoring The Great Creator and Nature!!!.......2007-02-26

This is one of Bobby Lake Thom's books that changed my life in a very Positive and Spiritual way. The knowledge in this book comes from experience and training in the medicine way. Native Healer, Bobby Lake Thom (Medicine Grizzly Bear) shares his wisdom and experience to the reader about the importance of honoring nature and the Great Creator everyday of our lives by becoming aware of our natural surroundings in nature. I am very GRATEFUL for this book and the other books that Bobby wrote. It teaches and informs the reader about nature symbols, spirits, healing and knowledge. This book is a must for anyone in search of spiritual healing and knowldege. Bobby has the experience and training from several elders(Medicine Men and Women) in his lifetime from many different tribes. Readers should also look for the books Native Healer and Call of The Great Spirit by the same author. Again THANK YOU again for a very powerful spiritual tool Mr. Bobby Lake Thom! May the Great Creator and Good Spirits in Nature Bless You and your family Forever! I Highly recommend this book to everyone interested in Spiritual Knowledge and Healing!

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to reading natures signs.......2006-07-26

I ,and my family, use this book all the time as a field guide to interpret natural signs and omens in nature. This book is an authentic, true guide to how many native people look at the natural world and how it trys to guide and assist us in our lives.Bobby has done a great job, weaving traditional stories and short interpretations on each animal, insect or birds being discussed.Especially instructive was the section on how to use the creative, right brain to intuit the language of nature.Native people do not write in a overly intellectual or complex style .The teachings and beauty is in the simplicity and heart of the words. This book speaks to your mind yet on the spiritual level too.Great book!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars informative.......2006-07-20

I'm not a total novice of the subject, but I do still have a lot to learn. I found I liked the writing style of the author who seems to be very experienced and knowledgable. I came away from reading this book armed with a whole lot of new information (new for me) and a better appreciation for that which we do not see, or sometimes CHOOSE not to see. As I was reading this book, I found myself reaching often for my notepad to jot down quotes that "hit" me. I began reading this book at the same time I was reading a novel...on a very recent trip which involved a couple of long airplane flights. I was much more drawn to pulling this book out of my bag than the novel. That says alot to me.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Textbook I Own.......2007-07-09

This text is my favorite textbook that I have ever owned, in any subject, from four colleges and universities. It is a tall book--it doesn't fit on any shelf. However, the size allows for many more graphs, maps, tables, and pictures. The paper and colors make for a visually appealing text, and the text does an excellent job of highlighting key terms and concepts.

Professor de Blij is a recognized expert on Geography education in the U.S. and his textbook demonstrates his mastery on every page. He covers physical geography, climate, history, politics, anthropology, economics, and every other relevant subject in the region. The entire package is correlated well, without getting mired in details or glossing over important subjects.

There are many features in this text that you will not find anywhere else. My favorites are the drill-downs on the world's great cities, providing interesting information and a map of Mexico City, Saigon, and many others. Another feature is the "Regional Issue" textbox that presents both sides of a current issue for a region, such as "Who Needs Democracy?" for South America. A final feature I like is his "Field Notes" section that is a paragraph or so of his travelogue and a picture as he continues to research our changing world.

This text was a valuable resource in my Geography class, is still a great reference tool as I continue my international studies, and is a fun book to flip through during "down time".

    5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2006-04-30

This is a great book to introduce the topic of building strawbale, cob etc. homes. The wonderful point about it is that it details the pros and cons of each building style and lets you compare each method carefully so that you are able to next select a more detailed book about a particular style.
It has beautiful colour photos and lots of information. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book about Good Houses.......2005-12-22

Isn't it nice to dream of being able to build your own home...especially an environmentally "friendly" one!? I am learning so much about houses in general from this book, let alone alternative building. It is well written and has beautiful photography. My husband & I may never get to build our own home (or we may!) but we can sure enjoy the dream in more vivid detail because of this book. I think it should be required reading for politicians, city planners & the like!

5 out of 5 stars Among the best of books.......2005-11-21

Superlative well-balanced, insightful, entertaining, stimulative text, superlative graphics/layout with an abundant and marvelous and beautiful and very effective array of color photographs, superlative resource section, superlative physical book quality including stay-open binding.
If you're thinking of building a house or if you're interested in alternative housing possibilities (solar, etc.) or if you're interested in the topic of housing in general or if you'd like an ideal coffee table book, you will probably find this book a delightful fulfillment.
(Thank you, Amazon, including reviewers, for helping me to discover this book.)

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous book .......2005-05-19

Very comprehensive book which expertly and clearly details the differences between natural/sustainable methods and ideas versus conventional methods. The book makes an incredible cases for natural building and the philosophy of sustainability. After reading this book its hard to understand why you wouldn't want to build a house this way. On a personal note, this book has been inspirational to me as an undergrad student trying to get into an architecture school and train to be a sustainable architect. Also I'm coming from a traditional carpentry background and know that the things Clarke Snell is writing about are right on the money.

5 out of 5 stars Likeable, Readable and Profound.......2004-06-08

Okay - so I've never thought about the actual mechanics of building a house nor about the choices that allow us to enjoy the beauty of the planet without doing it harm. My concerns have usually been of the strict ly visual - I am an artist . This book is almost startlingly good - Clarke Snell has managed to stimulate even the most laissez-faire amongst us to pay attention to laws respect ing our environment and combine them with our desires for beauty and comfort not only for the past but indeed for the future.
